Relationship Between Sustainable Outer Space Law And The Use Of Satellite Technology In Handling Marine Plastic Debris, Andreas Pramudianto Dec 2019

Relationship Between Sustainable Outer Space Law And The Use Of Satellite Technology In Handling Marine Plastic Debris, Andreas Pramudianto

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Since the discovery of plastic material, which ends up as plastic waste after use and partly enters the sea, it has become a global problem that needs serious treatment. No international agreement exists about handling marine plastic debris. By contrast, national laws have been created to plastic bags and plastic debris. Currently, the existing legal instruments, especially in outer space law, are still traditional and inadequate. A sustainable new paradigm in outer space law is needed, such as the use of satellite technology, such as the COSMOS satellite by RKA Recosmos, for global environmental issues, including the ozone layer, climate …

Behind The Trash: A Qualitative Research On How Trash Pickers In Cirendeu Area Contribute To Recycling, Mana Kakinuma

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Trash is one of the most serious environmental issues. People strive to solve the problem with reducing the use of plastic and figuring out the method to recycle efficiently; however, the story of trash pickers is barely on the topic. The problems are the ignorance and underestimation of the society. People should consider the integrated solution for both the environment and those trash pickers. The ideal solution would be formalizing waste disposal system, officially hire trash pickers for their stable life, and let their children access to education for brighter future. This discussion will examine the importance of understanding the …

Living In A “Broken World”: Destructive Desire, Disconnected Disciplinarity, And Disruptive Deschooling, M. Nadarajah

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

This paper is trying to show that our current situation on Earth is going to collapse phase and broken. Sustainable Development Program (SDG) can’t give real action to resolve environmental, social, and economic problems such as poverty, biodiversity extinction, health, war and genocide, climate change, etc. On the other hand, the author describes that SDG only focuses on the technical solution and randomly decided criteria and standards for defining knowledge. Therefore, the author is seeking to encourage SDGs to see the problem from a wider point of view on this paper.

Newborn And Childhood Differential Dna Methylation And Liver Fat In School-Age Children, Madelon L. Geurtsen, Vincent W.V. Jaddoe, Lucas A. Salas, Susana Santos, Janine F. Felix

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disease in children in western countries. Adverse early-life exposures are associated with higher liver fat percentages in children. Differential DNA methylation may underlie these associations. We aimed to identify differential DNA methylation in newborns and children associated with liver fat accumulation in childhood. We also examined whether DNA methylation at 22 cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites (CpGs) associated with adult non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with liver fat in children. Within a population-based prospective cohort study, we analyzed epigenome-wide DNA methylation data of 785 newborns and 344 10-year-old children in relation …

Young Chinese Wechat Users' Brand Following Behavior, Wonsun Shin, Yan Huo

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Brand-following of consumers on social media constitutes an important return on investment (ROI) index in digital marketing. However, little is known to date regarding brand-following behaviors of young Chinese social media users on Chinese social media platforms, in addition to the factors associated with them. In this study, our in-depth interviews with 20 emerging adults who followed brands through WeChat indicated that materialistic values, brand-related peer communication, and parents’ opinions regarding different product categories impact the brand-following behaviors of young consumers. The interviews also demonstrated that young people’s brand-following affected their intentions to post brand-related messages that were pertinent to …

Assalamualaikum Bejing Repackaged: Habitus, Symbolic Power And Indonesian Cultural Production, Alberta Natasia Adji Dec 2019

Assalamualaikum Bejing Repackaged: Habitus, Symbolic Power And Indonesian Cultural Production, Alberta Natasia Adji

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

This article explores the adaptation of Asma Nadia’s Assalamualaikum Beijing from novel to film to comic book as the reproduction of symbolic cultural goods. According to Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, people are conditioned to perform repetitive acts devoid of any preceeding consideration or deliberation, while symbolic power represents the tacit modes of social/cultural domination ingrained and preserved through everyday social practices. Taking a sociology of literature approach, this study discovers that the habitus of the Indonesian canon literary tradition has hindered contemporary literary works from achieving the same level of legitimacy through the boundary work performed by literary awards. Contemporary …

Percieved Threat Of Homosexuals In Indonesia: Construct, Measurement, And Correlates, Susana Tjipto, Elisabeth Haksi Mayawati, Allan B. I. Bernardo

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

In Indonesia, homonegativity still exists and acts of violence against homosexual groups still happen, but there has not been much research on aspects of this homonegativity beyond inquiring into general attitudes towards homosexuals. This study has several aims: to qualitatively explore dimensions of perceived threat, to develop a measure of perceived threat of homosexuals, and to study some correlates and perceived threat of homosexuals in Indonesian samples. We used a mixed-method approach (qualitative-quantitative) to gather the data. Study 1 is a qualitative study that seeks to identify expressions and dimensions of perceived threat of homosexuals using thematic analysis of responses …

Personality, Polyculturalism, And Cultural Intelligence: A Cross-Cultural Survey Study, Allan B. I. Bernardo

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The ability to function effectively in intercultural contexts is increasingly important in our globalized world. This ability has been conceptualized as cultural intelligence (or CQ), and many studies have focused on the factors associated with high CQ. The present study explored personality traits and the lay theory of polyculturalism as factors that predict CQ in two cultural groups (300 Chinese, 247 Filipinos) of university students. The respondents completed a questionnaire that included scales measuring the Big Five personality factors, polyculturalism, and CQ. Hierarchical regression analyses of questionnaire responses from the two samples indicated that consistent with the previous literature, openness …

Attracting And Retaining Young Workforce In Indonesia: Does Person-Organization (P-O) Fit Matter?, Dina Sartika Dec 2019

Attracting And Retaining Young Workforce In Indonesia: Does Person-Organization (P-O) Fit Matter?, Dina Sartika

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Rooted in the similarity−attraction−attrition paradigm, Cable and Judge’s framework has been one of the leading models in explaining Person−Organization fit. It associates perceived value congruence with employee work attitudes pre and post their entry. This study extends the model and findings by looking at the specific, underlying value dimensions that cause these effects. Drawing on a sample of 800 Indonesian jobseekers, I applied polynomial regression to test the model. Results showed that congruence between personal and organizational social responsibility value was the strongest and most consistent dimension predicting employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Variation Of Rumen Bacterial Diversity In Steers After The Beginning Of Grazing, Miwa Nakano, Satoshi Haga, Masanori Tohno, Kazuhiro Matoba, Ryuichi Uegaki, Hiroshi Ishizaki Dec 2019

Variation Of Rumen Bacterial Diversity In Steers After The Beginning Of Grazing, Miwa Nakano, Satoshi Haga, Masanori Tohno, Kazuhiro Matoba, Ryuichi Uegaki, Hiroshi Ishizaki

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Holstein heifers before or after puberty often are herded on public pastures in Japan. The herbage intake and rumen fermentation of grazing heifers that are not adapted for fresh herbage decreases due to a change of feed from stall-fed dried forage to fresh herbage. This limits their performance during the first several weeks on pasture. Thus, the feeding program such as supplementation before and after the beginning of grazing is important. An increase in ammonia concentration and a decline in fibre degradation in the rumen of a heifer (both of which occur simultaneously with low herbage intake and rumen fermentation) …

Activity, Physiology And Milk Production Of Yaks And Two Different Yak Crossbreds Grazing Himalayan Pasture Sites At 4700 M And 3000 M, Shanker R. Barsila, Naba R. Devkota, Michael Kreuzer, Svenja Marquardt

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Yaks (Bos grunniens) and crossbreds of yaks with different local cattle breeds are important for the livelihood of local herders in the Himalayas. They are often kept in a system of transhumance comprising the use of different pasture sites for grazing along an altitudinal gradient throughout the year. The animals are moved upwards to the high altitude pastures in spring/early summer and gradually moved downwards in late summer/autumn. Yaks are suitable for very high altitudes as they are especially adapted to low oxygen partial pressure, forage scarcity and cold and harsh environment (Wiener et al. 2003). However, …

Developing And Implementing Animal Welfare Assessments On Extensive And Intensive Grassland Systems: An Overview, Nguyen Xuan Trach, Bob Kilgour Dec 2019

Developing And Implementing Animal Welfare Assessments On Extensive And Intensive Grassland Systems: An Overview, Nguyen Xuan Trach, Bob Kilgour

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

While several definitions of animal welfare exist, in this paper we use the concept of the Five Freedoms. The Five Freedoms are freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury and disease; freedom from fear and distress; freedom to perform normal behavior. While the idea of the Five Freedoms has limitations, it is still a widely-used conceptualization of animal welfare and we use it here to discuss the welfare of cattle in intensive and extensive management systems in Vietnam and Australia. Compared to extensive pasture systems, intensive management systems do result in heightened animal welfare …

Developing A Diet Authentication System From The Composition Of Meat In Ruminants, F. J. Monahan, A. P. Moloney, O. Schmidt

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

As consumer interest in the link between diet and human health and in the ethics of food production increases assurances about the background origin of food are sought. In the case of animal-derived foods, such as meat, the animal’s diet is an intrinsic component of the food’s production and of its subsequent nutritional quality. Thus, there is a need to develop ways of validating the authenticity of the animal diet. Among the approaches to authenticate the background diet of ruminants is the measurement of components in meat (muscle and adipose tissue) and other tissues that are directly influenced by the …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Western China is mostly covered with natural grasslands, particularly in mountainous and alpine areas. Here agriculture and grazing pastures with livestock are widely integrated. Overgrazing and forage shortages are prominent problems for animal production. Cold weather and long drought periods can also lead to serious feed shortages, especially of high quality protein forages (Liu et al. 2010). Planting perennial forages with high nutritive value is an important way of increasing forage supply and relieving grassland degradation. Medicago varia L. cv. Gannong No.1 (Medicago) and Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop. cv. Gansu (sainfoin) are examples of perennial legumes with high …

Characterizing Feeds And Feed Availability In Sud-Kivu Province, Dr Congo, Samy B. Bacigale, Birthe K. Paul, Fabrice L. Muhimuzi, Neville Mapenzi, Michael Peters, Brigitte L. Maass

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal husbandry in the Sud-Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is gradually moving towards stall feeding, due to demographic pressure (Battistin et al. 2009) and scarcity of collectable forages (DSRP-RDC 2005). Therefore, feed is considered one of the main constraints faced by livestock production, especially in the dry season (Katunga et al. 2009; Maass et al. 2012). Unaffordable, fluctuating prices and inaccessibility of feed concentrates and the lack of improved forages adapted to marginal conditions, making them non-competitive with food crops, further exacerbate the livestock feeding situation. This study within the African Food …
