Department of Surgery Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to explore strategies to improve mitral valve repair (MVr) outcomes. This research explores postoperative outcomes of patients undergoing MVr surgery by single center surgeons versus patients of multicenter surgeons. Specific outcomes of interest include 30-day operative mortality, major operative complications (e.g., deep sternal wound infection, permanent stroke, renal dysfunction requiring dialysis, reoperation, and prolonged ventilation), length of stay, and 30-day readmissions.

In brief, the serisk-adjusted outcome rates for surgeons that perform mitral valve repair procedures will be compared for surgeons that operate at a single center [i.e. SC surgeons] versus multiple centers [i.e. MC …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

This study deals with the principle of banking secrecy in terms of its definition, legality, scope, penalty of violation and exceptions related to it in a comparative study between the Jordanian Banking Law and Islamic Shari'ah.

Through this work, it has been found that the principle of banking secrecy is legally established and involves the interests of the client, the bank and society in general, and that this principle has its own objective, personal and temporal scope, and that the violation of this norm is a crime in the light of Shari'ah and law. In accordance with justice and public …

النيابة العامة الشرعية في قانون أصول المحاكمات الشرعية الأردني Shari'a Public Prosecution In The Law Of Shari'a Proceedings Jordan, Yousef Abdallah Al-Sharifain, Hussein Al-Omari

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

The study aimed at clarifying the features of the Shari'a Public Prosecution in the Jordanian Jurisprudence Law. In order to achieve this, the researcher followed the analytical descriptive method.

The study has reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which are: The prosecution can not be prosecuted by the public prosecution, whether it is an original party or a party. The court must respond to the request. If the case is prolonged, the Public Prosecution wants to see some procedures for presenting opinion on a particular matter, or to write the final arguments in the case. The Public …

طبيعة العلاقة التعاقدية في التأمين الإسلامي The Nature Of The Contractual Relationship In Islamic Insurance, Suna Omar Abadi

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

The contractual relationship governing the system of Islamic insurance is the safety valve for the public restructuring in the insurance industry, so that subtle differences between insurance in its Islamic and traditional image became a threat by the presence of fraud or serious negligence on commitment to the origin of the relationship that govern out the contract, and in spite of jurisprudence contemporary scholars in trying to formulate precise control of contractual relations between the parties to the process of insurance, fears still exist between time and the other about the nature of the conditioning of the insurance contract, this …

Behavioural Risks In Female Dogs With Minimal Lifetime Exposure To Gonadal Hormones, Melissa J. Starling, Anne Fawcett, Bethany Wilson, James Serpell, Paul Mcgreevy

Physiology Collection

Spaying of female dogs is a widespread practice, performed primarily for population control. While the consequences of early spaying for health are still being debated, the consequences for behaviour are believed to be negligible. The current study focused on the reported behaviour of 8981 female dogs spayed before 520 weeks (ten years) of life for reasons other than behavioural management, and calculated their percentage lifetime exposure to gonadal hormones (PLGH) as a proportion of their age at the time of being reported to the online Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). We found that 23 behaviours differed between entire …

Restoring Energy Deficits In Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Key To Effective Treatment, Savannah Daines, Brett Adams, Tye Harrison Dec 2019

Restoring Energy Deficits In Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Key To Effective Treatment, Savannah Daines, Brett Adams, Tye Harrison

Fall Student Research Symposium 2019

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when external forces cause the brain to move rapidly within the skull, resulting in an alteration of brain function. Following the initial injury, a cascade of cellular events known as the secondary injury reduces cerebral energy production and exacerbates pathological consequences. Conditions that close the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) provide effective treatment for TBI by restoring ionic balance and coupling of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to ATP production. mPTP closure can be achieved during ketosis when the body metabolizes ketone bodies over glucose as a primary fuel source. Administration of exogenous ketones achieves therapeutic levels …

The Impact Of Living On Campus On Student Persistence, Hayden Hoopes Dec 2019

The Impact Of Living On Campus On Student Persistence, Hayden Hoopes

Fall Student Research Symposium 2019

Making the choice of where to live while in college is frequently acknowledged as one of the most important decisions an undergraduate student makes. Housing decisions influence students' access to campus resources and social integration, elements thought to be key indicators of their progression towards graduation. Interestingly, however, the association between living on-campus and persistence has not been considered thoroughly in the literature. While many studies leverage survey data and retention rates to make direct comparisons between on-campus and off-campus groups, most are unable to account for self-selection bias, i.e. that students who live on-campus may be qualitatively different from …

Variable Camber Wings Using Compliant Mechanisms, Benjamin Moulton Dec 2019

Variable Camber Wings Using Compliant Mechanisms, Benjamin Moulton

Fall Student Research Symposium 2019

Wing morphing is the manipulation of a wing shape to influence aerodynamics. Wing morphing has significant aerodynamic advantages over traditional flaps, including increased efficiency and control. The USU Aerolab specializes in morphing aircraft and is currently working with the Air Force Research Lab on morphing straight wings [1-4].

The purpose of this project is to identify methods for applying morphing technologies to swept-wing aircraft. These methods are then used to create a morphing wing aircraft to demonstrate the efficiency and control of morphing flight with a swept wing.

Haole Like Me: Identity Construction And Politics In Hawaii, Savanah Janssen Dec 2019

Haole Like Me: Identity Construction And Politics In Hawaii, Savanah Janssen

English (MA) Theses

Haole is a contested, multi-faceted word in Hawaii. It generally means “foreigner,” or “white person.” It is used to refer to both tourists, and haoles like me, or those who are born and raised in Hawaii. In either case, it is always negative, referring to something “other” and really, colonial. Paraphrasing rhetorician Kenneth Burke, this thesis analyzes how this word “works in the world,” and from there, explores how identity, culture, and belonging are constructed through language. The essential questions become: are culture and identity constructed and performed, through language, tradition, and cultural engagement? Or is some blood content or …

Academic advising performs a pivotal contribution to student success by providing information about univeristy expectations and avenues towards graduation. Exploratory student advising has the additional task of supporting students in major selection. This analysis investigated the relationship between academic advising and student persistence for exploratory students to better understand the impact of current advising practices. METHODS: Exploratory academic advisors met with an average 53% of exporatory students each semester. Students with a record of meeting with an academic advisor were compared to similar exploratory students who did not. Students were compared using prediction-based propensity score matching. Students who met with …

Improving Lake Mixing Process Simulations In The Community Land Model By Using K Profile Parameterization, Qunhui Zhang, Jiming Jin, Xiaochun Wang, Phaedra E. Budy, Nick Barrett, Sarah E. Null Dec 2019

Improving Lake Mixing Process Simulations In The Community Land Model By Using K Profile Parameterization, Qunhui Zhang, Jiming Jin, Xiaochun Wang, Phaedra E. Budy, Nick Barrett, Sarah E. Null

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We improved lake mixing process simulations by applying a vertical mixing scheme, K profile parameterization (KPP), in the Community Land Model (CLM) version 4.5, developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Vertical mixing of the lake water column can significantly affect heat transfer and vertical temperature profiles. However, the current vertical mixing scheme in CLM requires an arbitrarily enlarged eddy diffusivity to enhance water mixing. The coupled CLM-KPP considers a boundary layer for eddy development, and in the lake interior water mixing is associated with internal wave activity and shear instability. We chose a lake in Arctic Alaska and …
