The Feasibility Of Healthy Corner Stores In Saint Louis, Chancelor Thomas
Theses
We analyze the success of healthy corner store initiatives within the Saint Louis area. We use ARCGIS to map and geospatial analysis understand areas of demand within Saint Louis and food deserts to determine the level of competition between successful healthy corner stores and potential alternatives. We determine that based on the concentration of alternatives that healthy corner stores in Saint Louis are insufficient and other alternative policies should be used to address food insecurity include stricter standards for EBT retailers.

Eigenvalue Continuity And Gersgorin's Theorem, Chi-Kwong Li, Fuzhen Zhang
Mathematics Faculty Articles
Two types of eigenvalue continuity are commonly used in the literature. However, their meanings and the conditions under which continuities are used are not always stated clearly. This can lead to some confusion and needs to be addressed. In this note, the Geršgorin disk theorem is revisited and the issue concerning the proofs of the theorem by continuity is clarified.

Mosquito-Borne Illnesses And Their Disproportionate Impact On Variant Infrastructures: A Gis Map Comparison Of Three Regions., Jenna N. Price
Honors Theses
Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on earth and they spread diseases through their bites. Chikungunya, Dengue, Malaria, Yellow Fever, West Nile Virus, and Zika are six diseases of concern that are transmitted by mosquitoes. This honors thesis will attempt to provide relevant information and a critical analysis of current literature. Disease descriptions of the aforementioned illnesses and country evaluations for Niger, South Sudan, and the United States of America are included for comparison and evaluation. A Geographic Information System was used to create several maps comparing the three regions of the earth specified. The models are used to show country …

Organizational Climate, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict And Nurse Faculty Work Balance: Influence On Organizational Commitment And Turnover Intention, Denise K. Gormley
Dissertations
The mission for faculty in university and college settings is generally three-part and encompasses teaching, research, and service. Nurse faculty have struggled to balance work and understand the changing views of scholarship. A number of factors affect faculty commitment to the academic organization, and can influence behavior and attitude in the workplace. No research was found that explored the effect of organizational climate, role ambiguity, role conflict, and nurse faculty work role balance on faculty organizational commitment and turnover intention. The purpose of this study was to examine how organizational commitment and turnover intention are influenced by organizational climate, role …

The Relation Of Sick Leave Benefits, Employment Patterns, And Individual Characteristics To Radiation Therapy-Related Fatigue, Patricia Anne Poirier
Dissertations
Fatigue has consistently been found to be the most common and distressing side effect of radiation therapy. This study examined the relation of a specific life-style behavior with many policy and economic implications, participation in the workforce, on radiation therapy-related fatigue. The aims of this longitudinal study were to: describe sick leave benefits available to patients undergoing radiation therapy; examine the relation between sick leave benefits, individual characteristics, and employment patterns in patients undergoing radiation therapy; and examine the relation between employment patterns, individual characteristics, and fatigue in patients receiving radiation therapy. The Conceptual Model of Nursing and Health Policy …

Detecting Tree Mortality With Landsat-Derived Spectral Indices: Improving Ecological Accuracy By Examining Uncertainty, Tucker J. Furniss, Van R. Kane, Andrew J. Larson, James A. Lutz
Ecology Center Publications
Satellite-derived fire severity metrics are a foundational tool used to estimate fire effects at the landscape scale. Changes in surface characteristics permit reasonably accurate delineation between burned and unburned areas, but variability in severity within burned areas is much more challenging to detect. Previous studies have relied primarily on categorical data to calibrate severity indices in terms of classification accuracy, but this approach does not readily translate into an expected amount of error in terms of actual tree mortality. We addressed this issue by examining a dataset of 40,370 geolocated trees that burned in the 2013 California Rim Fire using …

Happy Feet In A Rural Clinic: A Diabetic Foot Education Intervention, Carmencita S. Abood
Dissertations
Rural Healthy People 2010 report indicated that diabetes was more pervasive in non-metropolitan areas than in central cities and more commonplace in the Southeast and the Southwest regions of the United States due to complex set of factors such as low socioeconomic status among many rural residents, a high proportion of racial or ethnic minorities, and aging populations that were predominant in rural areas. The need for innovative, low literacy education material that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in a rural clinic is imperative. The purpose of the capstone project was to determine the effectiveness of a patient-centered diabetes …

The Biosorption Of Lead From Aqueous Solutions By A Wood-Immobilized Fungal Biosorbent, Zomesh A N Maini, Niña Therese B. Flores, Enrico P. Muñoz

Lead [Pb(II)] biosorption capacities of immobilized Talaromyces macrosporus on Moringa oleifera L. wood were compared against pure fungal and pure M. oleifera biomass. A Pb(II) contact test of 1000 ug/mL show similar Pb(II) removal of non-immobilized fungal biomass (F) and powdered wood colonized with fungi (WP+F), with WP+F producing more biomass. Powdered sorbents had higher Pb(II) uptake compared to whole sorbents analyzed through ICP-AES, possibly due to increased surface area for Pb(II) binding. FTIR analysis of the F, WP, and WP+F identified hydroxyl, amino, carbonyl, and sulfhydryl functional groups which constitute probable Pb(II)-affinitive binding sites. The biosorbents tested in a …

Standardization Of The Computerized Battery For Neuropsychological Evaluation Of Children (Benci) In An Urban Setting, In Kenya: A Study Protocol, Rachel Wanjiru Maina, Amina Abubakar, Perez‑Garcia Miguel, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Manasi Kumar
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Objective: In sub Saharan Africa one of the key challenges in assessment using neuropsychological tools has been the lack of adequately validated and easily implementable measures. This study will translate into English, adapt and standardize the Computerized Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI). The BENCI battery will be adapted using back-translation design, comprehensive cultural adaptation and standardized in a case–control study involving two groups of children: HIV infected and HIV unexposed, uninfected children. The content adaptation will be iteratively carried out using knowledge of English and feedback from pilot testing with children. The proposed study will first involve the …

Phytophotodermatitis, also commonly known as phototoxic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that occurs after contact with certain plants and subsequent exposure to sunlight. It is often confused with skin burns due to the blistering nature of its lesions. We herein report a case of phytophotodermatitis that developed in a 26-year-old male following contact with lime and subsequent exposure to sunlight.
