For One In Four Very Young, Low-Income Children, Parents Are Young Too, Jess Carson Dec 2019

For One In Four Very Young, Low-Income Children, Parents Are Young Too, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Jessica Carson maps the distribution of children living with young adult parents, describes their parents’ characteristics, and details ways to strengthen policy supports that can fortify their families’ ability to succeed. She reports that while fewer than 5 percent of children live with young adult parents (age 18–24), the share among children age 0–3 is 16 percent, and among low-income children that age, it is 25 percent. Low-income young adult parents have different characteristics than their older counterparts; for example, they are more often parenting their first child with no co-parent present, and they have higher …

The Dirty Clean Fuel, Sawyer Krivanek Dec 2019

The Dirty Clean Fuel, Sawyer Krivanek

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Hydraulic fracking began nearly 80 years ago and was initially headlined as a brand new, fuel efficient alternative to coal and oil. Natural gas has been disguised as a clean fuel, when in reality it is just another dirty, polluting, environmentally harmful fossil fuel. The detriments of fracking heavily outweigh the benefits, and it needs to be banned on public and private lands. Natural gas has been viewed as a cleaner alternative to coal and oil, so immediately fossil fuel industries took advantage of that narrative. Consumers, eager for cleaner alternatives, have been tricked into buying into the fracking fad. …

Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner Dec 2019

Don’T Give Up On Nuclear Energy, Daniel Gertner

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

The nuclear power plant failures at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl in the late 1970s and 1980s split Americans into two passionate camps. For some, nuclear plants posed serious threats to both environmental and national security, and, for others, nuclear energy remained the most viable path to clean, reliable power in the United States. But following the fervent debates of the late 20th century, the national conversation around nuclear power stagnated. A few ardent advocates and opponents notwithstanding, nuclear power left the public eye. Popular energy debates—especially among young people—now center around flashier topics like the Green New Deal, electric …

Multi-Agent Simulation Model Of Urban Safety Livability Change, Lihu Pan, Xiaowen Li, Shipeng Qin, Yingjun Zhang, Huimin Yan Dec 2019

Multi-Agent Simulation Model Of Urban Safety Livability Change, Lihu Pan, Xiaowen Li, Shipeng Qin, Yingjun Zhang, Huimin Yan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Urban livability is an important factor for the decision of modern urban construction. Based on the multi-agent modeling theory, a model for the change of urban livability is proposed, so as to analyze the present situation and changing trend of urban livability in complex urban system. Taking safety as an example, five environmental indicators of public security, fire protection, traffic, emergency response and residence are given. The interactive dynamic feedback mechanism between residents' decision-making behavior and urban safety livability under the influence of the five indicators and policies is provided, and the residents' decision-making simulation of urban safety livability …

American Medical Response Active Shooter Project Proposal, Matthew Spong Dec 2019

American Medical Response Active Shooter Project Proposal, Matthew Spong

CUP Undergraduate Research

American Medical Response (AMR) Tukwila is the hub of its Western Washington operations. With over 400 employees and multiple customers and guests at any given time, they must have measures in place to ensure the safety and security of those on the premises. In the summer of 2019, AMR Tukwila experienced a possible active shooter incident. While this is a low occurrence event it proves the need for having a plan and procedures in place. Active shooter situations have steadily risen over the years and can happen without warning. This proposal identifies problems and solutions so that AMR Tukwila employees, …

Does Aid Really Help? The Nexus Between Development Aid And State-Society Resilience In Fragile Situations, Cyrel San Gabriel Dec 2019

Does Aid Really Help? The Nexus Between Development Aid And State-Society Resilience In Fragile Situations, Cyrel San Gabriel

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

This study aims to determine how development aid impacts state-society resilience, and how such resilience impacts aid flows in fragile situations. It particularly examines if development aid builds state-society resilience in fragile situations listed in the harmonized list of World Bank, African Development Bank, and Asian Development Bank from 2006 to 2018. Results show that development aid causes a decrease in state-society resilience, while state-society resilience causes an increase in aid flows. Aid for governance and human development weakens resilience. Better governance and peace levels curb aid flows, while higher human development levels boost aid flows. Economic growth is neither …

Addendum: A Second Poem By Eduard Dorsch On The Occasion Of Humboldt's 100th Birthday, Reinhard Andress Dec 2019

Addendum: A Second Poem By Eduard Dorsch On The Occasion Of Humboldt's 100th Birthday, Reinhard Andress

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In a previously published article in HIN under the title of “Eduard Dorsch and his unpublished poem on the occasion of Humboldt's 100th birthday,” I elaborated on Dorsch's poem that was read in Detroit in front of a German-American audience on Sept. 14, 1869, a day widely celebrated in the US in honor of Humboldt. Although it was not surprising that Dorsch wrote the occasional poem in the first place given his affinities with Humboldt's world of thought, a discovery of a second occasional poem upon further research in Dorsch's voluminous papers was indeed unexpected, in this case read on …

Dosimetric Feasibility Of Utilizing The Viewray Magnetic Resonance Guided Linac System For Image-Guided Spine Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Gage Redler, Tynan Stevens, Jochen Cammin, Martha Malin, Olga Green, Sasa Mutic, Sean Pitroda, Bulent Aydogan Dec 2019

Dosimetric Feasibility Of Utilizing The Viewray Magnetic Resonance Guided Linac System For Image-Guided Spine Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Gage Redler, Tynan Stevens, Jochen Cammin, Martha Malin, Olga Green, Sasa Mutic, Sean Pitroda, Bulent Aydogan

Open Access Publications

INTRODUCTION: Spine stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) achieves favorable outcomes compared to conventional radiotherapy doses/fractionation. The spinal cord is the principal dose-limiting organ-at-risk (OAR), and safe treatment requires precise immobilization/localization. Therefore, image guidance is paramount to successful spine SBRT. Conventional X-ray imaging and alignment to surrogate bony anatomy may be inadequate, whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) directly visualizes the dose-limiting cord. This work assessed the dosimetric capability of the ViewRay (ViewRay Inc. Oakwood Village, OH) magnetic resonance (MR) guided linac (MR-Linac) for spine SBRT.

METHODS: Eight spine SBRT patients without orthopedic hardware who were previously treated on a TrueBeam using …

Continuum Belief, Categorical Belief, And Depression Stigma: Correlational Evidence And Outcomes Of An Online Intervention, Ryan Thibodeau Dec 2019

Continuum Belief, Categorical Belief, And Depression Stigma: Correlational Evidence And Outcomes Of An Online Intervention, Ryan Thibodeau

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

Continuum belief interventions that erode boundaries between “normal” individuals and individuals with psychiatric problems may help to reduce psychiatric stigma, but a number of questions persist. The magnitude of belief change attributable to the intervention is unclear. Moreover, most studies have executed continuum interventions to reduce stigma of schizophrenia, and all studies have examined intervention effects on only public stigma. This study utilized a large sample (n = 654) to examine effects of a continuum intervention on depression stigma—public stigma in the full sample and self-stigma among participants with a self-reported history of depression. Participants were randomly assigned to …

Image-Based Localization Of User-Interfaces, Riti Gupta

Master's Projects

Image localization corresponds to translating the text present in the images from one language to other language. The aim of the project is to develop a methodology to translate the text in image captions from English to Hindi by taking context of the images into account. A lot of work has been done in this field [22], but our aim was to explore if the accuracy can be further improved by consideration of the additional information imparted by the images apart from the text. We have explored Deep Learning using neural networks for this project. In particular, Recurrent Neural Networks …

Neutrons produced in nuclear interactions initiated by cosmic-ray muons present an irreducible background to many rare-event searches, even in detectors located deep underground. Models for the production of these neutrons have been tested against previous experimental data, but the extrapolation to deeper sites is not well understood. Here we report results from an analysis of cosmogenically produced neutrons at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. A specific set of observables are presented, which can be used to benchmark the validity of geant4 physics models. In addition, the cosmogenic neutron yield, in units of 10-4 cm2/(g·μ), is measured to be 7.28±0.09(stat)-1.12+1.59(syst) in pure …

Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma Dec 2019

Addressing Childhood Obesity In A Rural Community Using Motivational Interviewing, Chituru Uwaoma

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Purpose: Childhood obesity is a significant health problem associated with increased adult morbidity and mortality. Rural areas like Central Valley California demonstrate disproportionate rates of obesity. Children in rural and underserved populations are at a higher risk of developing obesity. Data suggest that obesity is often under-addressed during routine health care visits. Primary care practitioners are the first point of health care contact and have a unique opportunity to prevent and address obesity through health monitoring and education.

In response to escalating rates of obesity, clinical recommendations have been established for primary care providers including the use of patient-centered …

Bridge To Neuroscience Workshop: An Effective Educational Tool To Introduce Principles Of Neuroscience To Hispanics Students, Alexandra Colon-Rodriguez, Chelsea T. Tiernan, Eileen S. Rodriguez-Tapia, William D. Atchison

Peer Reviewed Articles

Neuroscience as a discipline is rarely covered in educational institutions in Puerto Rico. In an effort to overcome this deficit we developed the Bridge to Neuroscience Workshop (BNW), a full-day hands-on workshop in neuroscience education. BNW was conceived as an auxiliary component of a parent recruitment program called Bridge to the PhD in Neuroscience Program (BPNP). The objectives of BNW are to identify promising students for BPNP, and to increase awareness of neuroscience as a discipline and a career option. BNW introduces basic concepts in neuroscience using a variety of educational techniques, including mini-lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, experimentation, and …
