Changes In The Legal System: A Comparative Essay Based On The Hungarian Experience, Attila Harmathy
Changes In The Legal System: A Comparative Essay Based On The Hungarian Experience, Attila Harmathy
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article is an attempt to understand the development of law, more particularly the civil law, in a country under constant changes, addressing history, sociology, economics, political science, lan-guages, literature, arts, and, most importantly, civil law itself. The country’s history starts from the foundation of the Hungar-ian state in the 11th century, in the middle of Europe, trying to be independent between strong Western kingdoms and the Byzantine Empire, and creating legal rules based on Christian values. This aim was pursued under the domination of different empires: Tatar, Turk, Austrian, Russian, and German. Political history helps understand the slow economic …

Predictive Modeling Of Influenza In New England Using A Recurrent Deep Neural Network, Alfred Amendolara
Predictive Modeling Of Influenza In New England Using A Recurrent Deep Neural Network, Alfred Amendolara
Theses
Predicting seasonal variation in influenza epidemics is an ongoing challenge. To better predict seasonal influenza and provide early warning of pandemics, a novel approach to Influenza-Like-Illness (ILI) prediction was developed. This approach combined a deep neural network with ILI, climate, and population data. A predictive model was created using a deep neural network based on TensorFlow 2.0 Beta. The model used Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) nodes. Data was collected from the Center for Disease Control, the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) and the United States Census Bureau. These parameters were temperature, precipitation, wind speed, population size, vaccination rate and …

Dental Professionals Occupational Noise Exposure And Its Auditory And Non-Auditory Effects, Alexis Frees
Theses
The purpose of this study was to assess noise exposure and its auditory and non-auditory effects on workers in five clinical departments in the School of Dental Medicine at Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences Campus in Newark, New Jersey. The study included environmental noise level measurement, dental instrument sound level measurement, personal noise dosimetry and a questionnaire survey to assess non-auditory effects. Octave band analysis of environmental noise levels showed that they are slightly above the standard noise criteria for clinics, and measurements from six dental instruments confirm that they contribute higher sound pressure levels at the frequencies of 1000, 2000, …
Integrated Mobile And Web-Based Application For Enhancing Delivery Of Hiv/Aids Healthcare Information In Tanzania, Ibrahim Mwammenywa
Integrated Mobile And Web-Based Application For Enhancing Delivery Of Hiv/Aids Healthcare Information In Tanzania, Ibrahim Mwammenywa
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
This study aims to develop an integrated e-health platform for enhancing delivery of HIV/AIDS healthcare information in Tanzania, which consists of a mobile application and a web-based system. The study is based on the system's functional and non-functional requirements for an e-health system for delivery of HIV/AIDS healthcare information. The Rapid Application Development (RAD) model was adopted during the system development. The system requirements were modelled into Data Flow Diagram (DFD) in order to obtain the clear flow of the HIV/AIDS healthcare information between the clients and HIV/AIDS healthcare practitioners. With the use of different software development tools and environment …
Remediating Soil For Successful Vegetation Establishment Along Nebraska Highways, Shad Mills, Martha Mamo, Walt Schacht, Humberto Blanco-Canqui
Remediating Soil For Successful Vegetation Establishment Along Nebraska Highways, Shad Mills, Martha Mamo, Walt Schacht, Humberto Blanco-Canqui
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Vegetation along roadsides is important to prevent soil erosion, provide habitat, and filter water running off the road. Vegetation close to the pavement along highways in Nebraska does not readily establish and persist. It is thought that the sodium and bulk density are the driving factors behind the lack of vegetation. After a construction project the shoulder is seeded into the compacted soil, and during winter salts can accumulate in the soil because of deicing agents being used. The purpose of our study was to determine if the sodium and bulk density are the driving factors of the vegetation cover. …
Reflections On Critical Pedagogy In America Latina: La Lucha Continua, Peter Mclaren
Reflections On Critical Pedagogy In America Latina: La Lucha Continua, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"When I speak in Mexico, I support efforts there to create a revolutionary critical pedagogy—one that has not been domesticated and depotentiated by neoliberal dogma. This means the inclusion of a decolonial pedagogy which challenges the “coloniality of power” (patron de poder colonial) that still resides at the heart of post-colonial societies. I would advise as a central, overarching goal of critical pedagogy the struggle for a socialist alternative to the “value form of labor” that exists in capitalist societies throughout North and South America, and that such efforts must be transnational in scope since capitalism is now transnational in …

Limitation Of Rights As A Manifestation Of Duties And Responsibilities Pertaining To The Freedom Expression In Digital Communications, Edmon Makarim, Muhammad Ibrahim Brata, Nabilla Arsyafira
Indonesia Law Review
The freedom of expression is thriving due to the global use of the internet. The digital era has revolutionized the scope, practices, and even the definition of freedom expression. However, it also evokes a number of social concerns. Offenses such as the circulation of defamation, hate speech, misleading propaganda to the masses, and fraud, for instance, can be found in the internet. Certain limitations deriving from the conditions prescribed by the human rights principles and instruments as well as the national constitution are therefore prudent to prevent the excess of freedom. As a state that abides to the rule of …

The 1958 New York Convention In Indonesia: History And Commentaries Beyond Monism-Dualism, John Lumbantobing
Indonesia Law Review
This Article recounts a complete history of Indonesia’s implementation of the 1958 NY Convention. In particular, the elaboration and analysis focus on the comparison between related provisions in the 1999 Indonesian Arbitration Law and the Convention’s provisions as well as on several key Indonesian court decisions on enforcement of foreign arbitral awards. Different than other writings in this area, this Article looks more closely at the practical issues which affect the way Indonesian courts apply or interpret the 1958 NY Convention, such as procedural hurdle and the judicial capacity to comprehend and understand basic concepts and principles of arbitration. The …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Shaded perennial agroforestry systems (AFS) are regarded as desirable land‐use practices that improve soil carbon sequestration. However, most studies assume a positive correlation between above ground and below ground carbon without considering the effect of past and current land management, textural variations (silt and clay percentage), and such other site‐specific factors that have a major influence on the extent of soil C sequestration. We assessed SOC stock at various depths (0–10, 10–30, 30–60, and 60–100 cm) in shaded perennial coffee (Coffea arabica L.) AFS in a 17‐ year‐old experimental field at the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, (9°53′44′′ …

The Chronic Kidney Disease in Children Study, a prospective cohort study with data collected from 2003 to 2018, provided the first opportunity to characterize the incidence of renal replacement therapy (RRT) initiation over the life course of pediatric kidney diseases. In the current analysis, parametric generalized gamma models were fitted and extrapolated for RRT overall and by specific treatment modality (dialysis or preemptive kidney transplant). Children were stratified by type of diagnosis: nonglomerular (mostly congenital; n = 650), glomerular-hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS; n = 49), or glomerular-non-HUS (heterogeneous childhood onset; n = 216). Estimated durations of time to RRT after …

Learning Difficulties Of High School Students In Understanding The Material Of Human Reproductive Systems Triggering Misconceptions, Naning Wahyuni, Hadi Suwono, Umie Lestari
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
Human Reproductive System is a basic concept in biological sciences that is related to daily life and interesting for high school students. Complicated learning materials make it difficult for students to construct their knowledge and understand the concepts. Survey research using a questionnaire was conducted to determine the causes of difficulties for high school students in understanding the Human Reproductive System concepts. Respondents were grade XII science students and two teachers. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The research findings indicate that students’ difficulties are due to (1) the extensive usage of scientific terms, (2) abstract concepts, (3) monotone, and …

Sustainability Practices In Higher Education: Stakeholder Engagement In Promoting Campus Sustainability, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng, Abigal Marie T. Favis
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Universities have a role in changing mindsets toward sustainable development through education, research, and extension work. Despite the ongoing trend in favor of sustainability initiatives, however, they themselves struggle to transform organizational practices in their own contexts, especially when trying to get the administration’s buy-in and establish stakeholder engagement. Ateneo de Manila University in particular used its response to the decrees of General Congregation 35 (Society of Jesus, 2008) of the Society of Jesus to serve as the foundation of its campus sustainability programs, especially with respect to its translation into policies that affect the university’s ecological footprint and stakeholder …
Toward A Quintuple Bottom Line In Higher Education Institutions: Sustainability Practices In Higher Education, Abraham Mulamoottil
Toward A Quintuple Bottom Line In Higher Education Institutions: Sustainability Practices In Higher Education, Abraham Mulamoottil
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
As the “trendsetter in education,” the experiments and experiences of Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies Tiruvalla (MACFAST) already show it to be an exceptional model of education, innovation, and sustainability that leverages the triple bottom line (TBL), focusing on how projects disturb the planet, affect people, and address profit. Yet MACFAST added two more areas of concern—the passion for study and the purpose of life, making for a quintuple bottom line. Such a “MACFASTian” praxis for action and reflection is evident in various projects. For example, MACFAST became the first education institution in India to be fully-powered by solar …
