Exclusion Of African-American High School Students From Selective Enrollment Schools: Their Views On Academic And Social Success In The School Environment And After High School Graduation, Deidre R. Walker-Berry Nov 2019

Exclusion Of African-American High School Students From Selective Enrollment Schools: Their Views On Academic And Social Success In The School Environment And After High School Graduation, Deidre R. Walker-Berry

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

African-American graduation rates fall behind all other ethnic groups in the United States. Due to intensifying racial inequalities in Chicago, schools in low-income minority communities have confronted augmented segregation in educational opportunities. The closing of numerous schools, high-stakes, and standardized testing mandates, along with new educative options such as charters and military academies, have resulted in a dual-tiered educational system. These new educative options are entrenched in the neo-liberal ideology of free marketization and privatization of education and encourages the expansion of elite selective enrollment high schools. This expansion has marginalized and alienated many African-American students in addition to fostering …

Developing Moral Education To Combat Human Trafficking, Shima Rostami Nov 2019

Developing Moral Education To Combat Human Trafficking, Shima Rostami

Dissertations

Leaders are challenged daily to improve their organization's products and outcomes. “When the character of leaders is low, so are their standards” (Maxwell, 2010, p. 41), and accordingly the products and programs. No field or profession was exempt from this challenge at the leadership level. On this note, human trafficking as a humanitarian crisis was of particular interest for activists, but one that may still suffer from this same weakness at the leadership level. Consequently, having a concern for how to improve the character and standards of the leaders in the anti-human trafficking movement, the Investigator of this study questioned …

Increasing Awareness In End Of Life Care For Human Development And Family Studies Students, Nathan Ironside Nov 2019

Increasing Awareness In End Of Life Care For Human Development And Family Studies Students, Nathan Ironside

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Much of the focus for Human Development and Family Studies “HDFS” students is on childhood and adolescence rather than late adulthood. If students are planning on working with families in the future, it is important that they understand the kinds of issues involving older adults. Since these students could be working with families with terminally ill elders, they need to know what the options are for the families and the terminally ill. Additionally, terminally ill elders need to understand their rights regarding the kind of care they are entitled to. If terminally ill elders understand the quality and type of …

Extending Batson To Peremptory Challenges Of Jurors Based On Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity, Mark E. Wojcik Nov 2019

Extending Batson To Peremptory Challenges Of Jurors Based On Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity, Mark E. Wojcik

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Article argues that it is now time to extend Batson to all federal and state trial courts and expressly prohibit the exclusion of jurors based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The lack of protection for jurors based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity fosters discrimination in the law, violates the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons who may be excluded from serving on juries, violates the rights of LGBT persons whose criminal or civil cases are heard in court, and undermines public confidence in judicial proceedings that …

Behavior Prioritization To Improve Sbc (Social And Behavior Change) Programming During A Public Health Emergency: A Call To Action, Breakthrough Research

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

As the international development community continues to manage public health challenges and emerging diseases, the need for behavior prioritization is critical. The information in this brief provides rationale for why behavior prioritization is instrumental to improve social and behavior change programming, and ends with a call to action for advocacy for behavior prioritization processes as part of social and behavior change program design, planning, and adaptation. During the Zika outbreak in Latin America, a review of USAID-supported programming in 2017 revealed more than 30 Zika preventive behaviors and messages promoted by different implementing partners, and messaging on desired behaviors was …

Contact With Beneficiaries As A Success Factor Of Corporate Volunteering, Barbara Józefowicz, Iwona Escher, Aldona Glińska-Neweś

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

The aim of the article is to identify how the intensity of a volunteer contact with beneficiaries of implemented volunteer projects influences the effects that corporate volunteering brings to the organization. The analyses are based on the qualitative research conducted in 11 companies implementing corporate volunteer programs. The results of the study suggest that the more intense the contact between the volunteer-employees and the beneficiaries of volunteering is, the wider the range of competences they develop. On the other hand, volunteer projects in which contact with the beneficiary is weak contribute to strengthening the integration of employees and their identification …

Guidance On Protection From Sexual Exploitation And Abuse, Gichd Nov 2019

Guidance On Protection From Sexual Exploitation And Abuse, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) by humanitarian workers are some of the most serious failures of protection and are grave violations of the responsibility of humanitarian personnel to do no harm. Whereas instances of SEA are not a new occurrence, the pervasiveness of this phenomenon was only exposed to the public eye in 2002 following allegations of SEA by aid workers against refugees and displaced women and children in West Africa. Acknowledging that the problem was global, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Task Force on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) was established in 2002 with the short-term purpose …

Of Dangers, Conditions, Children, And Maturity: A Plea For A Comprehensible Standard In Long-Standing Rules, Maureen Straub Kordesh Nov 2019

Of Dangers, Conditions, Children, And Maturity: A Plea For A Comprehensible Standard In Long-Standing Rules, Maureen Straub Kordesh

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Article explores the common law doctrine of attractive nuisance in Illinois and proposes a more detailed explication of the rule. The doctrine lies in the junction between tort and contract, which might account for the incompleteness of its presentation. It argues that because law students are a significant audience for case law, the language of such rules should be as detailed and clear as possible.

Online News Representation Of Missing/Murdered Indigenous Women In Washington, New Mexico, And Arizona, Kelli Bowers Nov 2019

Online News Representation Of Missing/Murdered Indigenous Women In Washington, New Mexico, And Arizona, Kelli Bowers

McNair Scholars Manuscripts

There is limited research on the rates of violence against the many missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW) in the United States, especially in urban areas. There is also little news coverage given to women who are victims of this violence. The absence of research on this topic and the shortage of news coverage leads to a lack of understanding by the general public on the issue as a whole. This is a qualitative content analysis of the representation of MMIW in Washington, New Mexico, and Arizona. I will analyze the newspaper reporting of MMIW in these states and the …

Blended Root Finding Algorithm Outperforms Bisection And Regula Falsi Algorithms, Chaman Sabharwal Nov 2019

Blended Root Finding Algorithm Outperforms Bisection And Regula Falsi Algorithms, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finding the roots of an equation is a fundamental problem in various fields, including numerical computing, social and physical sciences. Numerical techniques are used when an analytic solution is not available. There is not a single algorithm that works best for every function. We designed and implemented a new algorithm that is a dynamic blend of the bisection and regula falsi algorithms. The implementation results validate that the new algorithm outperforms both bisection and regula falsi algorithms. It is also observed that the new algorithm outperforms the secant algorithm and the Newton-Raphson algorithm because the new algorithm requires fewer computational …

Emotion-Aware Chat Machine: Automatic Emotional Response Generation For Human-Like Emotional Interaction, Wei Wei, Jiayi Liu, Xianling Mao, Guibing Guo, Feida Zhu, Pan Zhou, Yuchong Hu Nov 2019

Emotion-Aware Chat Machine: Automatic Emotional Response Generation For Human-Like Emotional Interaction, Wei Wei, Jiayi Liu, Xianling Mao, Guibing Guo, Feida Zhu, Pan Zhou, Yuchong Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The consistency of a response to a given post at semantic-level and emotional-level is essential for a dialogue system to deliver human-like interactions. However, this challenge is not well addressed in the literature, since most of the approaches neglect the emotional information conveyed by a post while generating responses. This article addresses this problem by proposing a unified end-to-end neural architecture, which is capable of simultaneously encoding the semantics and the emotions in a post for generating more intelligent responses with appropriately expressed emotions. Extensive experiments on real-world data demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms …

Stressmon: Scalable Detection Of Perceived Stress And Depression Using Passive Sensing Of Changes In Work Routines And Group Interactions, Nur Camellia Binte Zakaria, Rajesh Balan, Youngki Lee Nov 2019

Stressmon: Scalable Detection Of Perceived Stress And Depression Using Passive Sensing Of Changes In Work Routines And Group Interactions, Nur Camellia Binte Zakaria, Rajesh Balan, Youngki Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stress and depression are a common affliction in all walks of life. When left unmanaged, stress can inhibit productivity or cause depression. Depression can occur independently of stress. There has been a sharp rise in mobile health initiatives to monitor stress and depression. However, these initiatives usually require users to install dedicated apps or multiple sensors, making such solutions hard to scale. Moreover, they emphasise sensing individual factors and overlook social interactions, which plays a significant role in influencing stress and depression while being a part of a social system. We present StressMon, a stress and depression detection system that …

Rethinking Education Choices: The Effect Of Surveys, Luca Facchinello, Juanna Schroter Joensen, Gregory Francisco Veramindi Nov 2019

Rethinking Education Choices: The Effect Of Surveys, Luca Facchinello, Juanna Schroter Joensen, Gregory Francisco Veramindi

Research Collection School of Economics

Can surveys affect human capital investments? This paper examines whether individual education choices and outcomes are affected by a survey posing questions related to expectations and forward-looking behavior. We have administrative data for the whole Swedish population to which an extensive education survey was administered to randomly drawn samples of 3rd graders. This constitutes a randomized social experiment for testing whether responding to survey questions alters behavior. We observe complete educational and labor market histories until the individuals are 31-41 years old. We have exogenous variation in the timing of first surveys and when an additional survey was administered to …

Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello Nov 2019

Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello

Research Collection School of Economics

Recent literature explains the puzzling finding of zero or negative peer effects in aca- demic achievement assuming that better peers negatively affect beliefs about ability (self-concept), motivation or peer interactions. This paper provides new evidence on such negative mechanisms, and on their impact on educational choices and attainment for students randomly assigned in compulsory school to classes with different cognitive ability. Using detailed longitudinal data on a nationally representative sample of Swedish compulsory school students, I find that students exposed to higher ability peers systematically underestimate their ability and are less likely to choose advanced subjects throughout compulsory school. While …

The Cycle Of Insecurity: Reassessing The Security Dilemma As A Conflict Analysis Tool, David Mitchell Nov 2019

The Cycle Of Insecurity: Reassessing The Security Dilemma As A Conflict Analysis Tool, David Mitchell

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article critically reassesses one of the classic ideas in International Relations, the security dilemma. It argues that the key insight of security dilemma theory has been obscured – by reductionist debates on single causes of conflict, inconclusive applications, and definitional disputes – and that the security dilemma’s enduring utility is as a model of the relational dynamic inherent in all conflict, the cycle of insecurity. Through a reappraisal of the literature, the article elucidates three essential dimensions of the cycle: an environment of structural uncertainty; interdependent collective identities; and an escalating and self-perpetuating dynamic. The power and validity of …

Prenatal Yoga In Pregnancy, Ashleigh Clingenpeel Nov 2019

Prenatal Yoga In Pregnancy, Ashleigh Clingenpeel

Senior Honors Theses

Prenatal yoga has emerged as an advisable, beneficial, and supportive addition to birth preparation. Many studies have linked participation in prenatal yoga with both maternal and infant benefits. Physical benefits for the mother include decreased labor time, decreased labor pain, and improved comfort during pregnancy. Significant emotional and mental effects have also been correlated, such as lowered rates of depression and anxiety, increased self-efficacy in labor, and easier transitions into the postpartum period. Finally, prenatal yoga has demonstrated benefits to the neonate, with a greater number of vaginal deliveries, which are less traumatic for the infant, an increase in gestational …

Inquiry And Problem Solving In English Composition: Belonging, Exile And Migration [Composition], Phyllis E. Vanslyck Nov 2019

Inquiry And Problem Solving In English Composition: Belonging, Exile And Migration [Composition], Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Open Educational Resources

In the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Meanings of War and its Aftermaths Seminar, offered to LaGuardia Faculty in the 2018-19 academic year, we examined numerous critical essays and literary texts, as well as photographs and documentaries, to gain a more nuanced understanding of the ways war continues to inhabit peoples’ lives. When I began participating in this Seminar, I had already planned a first-semester English Composition course based on the theme, Belonging, Exile, and Migration. Thinking about connections between our readings for the NEH Seminar and my course, I was particularly interested in the ways stories of displacement …

November 2019: Launching A New Strategic Plan, Gardner-Webb University

President William Downs' Blog

Gardner-Webb University is now due for its next five-year plan. GWU 2020-2025 will map out our institutional priorities and help guide resource allocations across a range of essential areas. Too frequently, complex organizations such as universities can get so mired in the daily minutiae that they fail to take time to think big…to aspire…to dream. We are going to make sure that GWU does not fall into that trap; instead, this month we will launch an intentional and inclusive process that will transform vision into action. I am excited about engaging with you to chart a path for our shared …

The Temporal Dynamics Of The Link Between Configural Face Processing And Dehumanization, Steven G. Young, Ryan E. Tracy, John Paul Wilson, Robert J. Rydell, Kurt Hugenberg Nov 2019

The Temporal Dynamics Of The Link Between Configural Face Processing And Dehumanization, Steven G. Young, Ryan E. Tracy, John Paul Wilson, Robert J. Rydell, Kurt Hugenberg

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The human face conveys a wealth of information, including traits, states, and intentions. Just as fundamentally, the face also signals the humanity of a person. In the current research we report two experiments providing evidence that disruptions of configural face encoding affect the temporal dynamics of categorization during attempts to distinguish human from non-human faces. Specifically, the present experiments utilize mouse-tracking and find that face inversion elicits confusion amongst human and non-human categories early in the processing of human faces. This work affords the first examination of how facial inversion affects the dynamic processes underlying categorization of human and non-human …

Building The Nest: How Native English Speaking Teachers (Nests) In The Tefl Field Develop Intercultural Competence, Emily S. Kraus

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The role of an English foreign language teacher requires expertise in the English language and pedagogical skills to make the learning process approachable for a variety of students. There are certain characteristics that make a person ostensibly suitable for the role such as patience, intelligence, trustworthiness and creativity. However, the development of teachers is often shaped by their certification preparation, experiences in the field of education and the lessons they learn from their students. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine how native English speaking teachers (NESTs) in Costa Rica teaching English as a foreign language develop …

Trans Sports Illustrated: Identities And Experiences Of Transgender Athletes Assigned Female At Birth, Sophia Neely Nov 2019

Trans Sports Illustrated: Identities And Experiences Of Transgender Athletes Assigned Female At Birth, Sophia Neely

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This empirical study explores how transgender athletic adults assigned female at birth narrate their identities and experiences related to gender and sports participation. Using the methodology of social science portraiture filtered through a lens of queer feminist theory, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two trans men and three nonbinary participants. The participants are diverse in terms of age (21 to 54), race (white, Asian American, and African American), current primary sports interest (squash, CrossFit, powerlifting, baseball, and rock climbing), and pronouns (he/him/his, ze/zir/zirs, and they/them/theirs). Media reports and extant research on transgender athletes tend to recount bleak histories of exclusion, …

Investigating The Impact Of Video Gaming On Children’S Magical Thinking In Early Childhood, Rafi Antar Nov 2019

Investigating The Impact Of Video Gaming On Children’S Magical Thinking In Early Childhood, Rafi Antar

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

In our present time, young children are exposed to various forms of electronic media, in particular video games. Several studies have discussed the impact of video games on children’s behavior, and brain development; however, almost none have framed this impact in the context of magical thinking. By using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach and a grounded theory approach, this dissertation aimed at discussing the meaning three children (ages 4 and 5) made after playing a video game called Super Mario bros. This study answered two questions: (1) how is children’s thought processes related to the notion of reality (i.e., understanding …

The Case For Joy In Learning: Teacher And Students' Perceptions Of Flow Experiences In Upper Elementary Classrooms, Rhonda Stern

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focused on intrinsic motivation in elementary schooling, with Csikszentmihalyi’s flow theory and the conditions and dimensions leading to optimal learning, serving as the theoretical framework. This qualitative case study investigated: 1.) How do teachers create flow-producing learning experiences for upper elementary students and 2.) How do upper elementary students experience flow in their daily school lives. Fieldwork included observation, collection of work product, and interviews of thirteen students and two exemplary teachers. Students were also asked to take digital photos of artifacts or spaces that related to their learning, and that they were proud of or found exciting. …
