Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner
Facial Re-Enactment, Speech Synthesis And The Rise Of The Deepfake, Nicholas Gardiner
Theses : Honours
Emergent technologies in the fields of audio speech synthesis and video facial manipulation have the potential to drastically impact our societal patterns of multimedia consumption. At a time when social media and internet culture is plagued by misinformation, propaganda and “fake news”, their latent misuse represents a possible looming threat to fragile systems of information sharing and social democratic discourse. It has thus become increasingly recognised in both academic and mainstream journalism that the ramifications of these tools must be examined to determine what they are and how their widespread availability can be managed.
This research project seeks to examine …
Image-Based Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experience And Perceived Consequences For Women, Brienna L. Webb
Image-Based Sexual Abuse: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Lived Experience And Perceived Consequences For Women, Brienna L. Webb
Theses : Honours
Being a highly convoluted and contemporaneous issue, defining and conceptualising image based sexual abuse has proved difficult for scholars. Although research on image-based sexual abuse is limited, previous inquiries have identified serious consequences and accumulative harms for affected individuals. I aimed to explore the lived experience and consequences of image-based sexual abuse as identified by women, in an attempt to taper the research dearth on this phenomenon. An in-depth qualitative phenomenological exploration of seven women’s experiences of image-based sexual abuse saw five overarching themes emerge from participants’ discourse. The themes comprised mental health impacts; perceptions of self; loss of control; …
Effects Of Active Participation And Education Of Caregivers On Peripheral Intravenous Injections For Their Child, Eunmi Hwang, Phoebe (Yeon) S. Kim, Dongsuk Lee
Effects Of Active Participation And Education Of Caregivers On Peripheral Intravenous Injections For Their Child, Eunmi Hwang, Phoebe (Yeon) S. Kim, Dongsuk Lee
Nursing Faculty Publications
This study was to determine the effects of active participation and education of caregivers on the pain experienced by their hospitalized children, the anxiety of the caregivers, and the working efficiency of nurses when administering peripheral intravenous (IV) injections to their children. It was found IV injections were the most feared procedures experienced by inpatient pediatric patients. A quasi-experimental design used in which different types of treatment were given to subjects in three groups. All caregivers received brief verbal information about the peripheral IV injection procedure for their child. Those in the control group then stayed outside the treatment room, …
Nursing Students' Willingness To Care For Older Adults, Insun Jang, Younglee Kim, Phoebe (Yeon) S. Kim
Nursing Students' Willingness To Care For Older Adults, Insun Jang, Younglee Kim, Phoebe (Yeon) S. Kim
Nursing Faculty Publications
The older adult population has increased and is projected to grow. This population usually has chronic disorders that need continuous care. However, it has been reported nurses and nursing students have negative attitude towards older adults. This descriptive study aimed at investigating factors influencing nursing students’ willingness to care for older adults. This study was conducted among 270 nursing students at the university in the United States from February 1 to February 28, 2017. Study participants answered the survey about quality and frequency of contact with older adults, anxiety about aging, empathy, attitude, and willingness to care for older adults. …
The Development Of Social–Emotional Skills In Pre-Primary Children: A Comparison Of Parent, Teacher And Combined Coaching Programs, Nichola Lucia Webb
The Development Of Social–Emotional Skills In Pre-Primary Children: A Comparison Of Parent, Teacher And Combined Coaching Programs, Nichola Lucia Webb
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The development of social–emotional skills is pivotal in generating positive outcomes for mental health and wellbeing throughout the childhood period and into later life (Hertzman, 2004; Moore, 2006; Sosna & Mastergeorge, 2005). While research has explored the effects of parent and teacher influences on young children’s social–emotional skills, most studies have either focussed on high-risk child populations, compared single influences with each other (e.g., parent versus teacher) or compared one combined group of influences with a control group. Few studies have directly compared the separate effects of parent, teacher and peer components to assess which are more successful in the …
Linking Patient Safety To Clinical Practice: The Insight Of New Graduate Registered Nurses, Melanie Murray
Linking Patient Safety To Clinical Practice: The Insight Of New Graduate Registered Nurses, Melanie Murray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
New graduate registered nurses’ (NGRNs) transition to practice with limited clinical experiences and skills. The related anxiety and stress predispose new graduate nurses to increased risk of contributing to preventable errors or adverse events. This risk, together with the new graduate’s fledgling ability to manage clinical deterioration, potentially compromises quality and safety of patient outcomes.
A longitudinal mixed methods design was used to develop an understanding of new graduate registered nurses’ patient safety knowledge and actions within the first year of nursing registration and offer important insights into NGRNs’ transition with a patient safety focus. New graduate registered nurses employed …
Being A Bad Vegan, Lelia Green
Being A Bad Vegan, Lelia Green
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
According to The Betoota Advocate (Parker), a CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) paper has recently established that “it takes roughly seven minutes on average for a vegan to tell you that they’re vegan” (qtd. in Harrington et al. 135). For such a statement to have currency as a joke means that it is grounded in a shared experience of being vegan on the one hand, and of encountering vegans on the other. Why should vegans feel such a need to justify themselves? I recognise the observation as being true of me, and this article is one way to …
Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes
Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Ecology is both blessed and burdened by romanticism, with a legacy that is multi-edged for health. The prefix ‘eco-’ can carry a cultural and political (subversive) baggage, associated with motivating environmental activism. Ecology is also practiced as a technical ‘science’, with quantitative and deterministic leanings and a biophysical emphasis. A challenge for planetary health is to avoid lapsing into, or rejecting, either position. A related opportunity is to adopt ecological thought that offers a rich entrance to understanding living systems: a relationality of connectedness, interdependence, and reciprocity to understand health in a complex and uncertain world. Planetary health offers a …
Intergenerational Influences Of Hunger And Community Violence On The Aboriginal People Of Western Australia: A Review, Francesca Robertson, David Coall, Dan Mcaullay, Alison Nannup
Intergenerational Influences Of Hunger And Community Violence On The Aboriginal People Of Western Australia: A Review, Francesca Robertson, David Coall, Dan Mcaullay, Alison Nannup
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
There is a consensus in the literature that hunger and community violence inaugurates adverse health impacts for survivors and for their descendants. The studied cohorts do not include Western Australian Aboriginal people, although many experienced violence and famine conditions as late as the 1970s. This article describes the pathways and intergenerational impacts of studied cohorts and applies these to the contemporary Western Australian context. The authors found that the intergenerational impacts, compounded by linguistic trauma, may be a contributor to current health issues experienced by Aboriginal people, but these are also contributing to the resurgence in population numbers.

The Effects Of An Eight Over Cricket Bowling Spell Upon Pace Bowling Biomechanics And Performance Within Different Delivery Lengths, Samuel J. Callaghan, Robert G. Lockie, Warren A. Andrews, Walter Yu, Robert F. Chipchase, Sophia Nimphius
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Pace bowlers must often perform extended bowling spells with maximal ball release speed (BRS) while targeting different delivery lengths when playing a multi-day match. This study investigated the effect of an eight over spell upon pace bowling biomechanics and performance at different delivery lengths. Nine male bowlers (age = 18.8 ± 1.7 years) completed an eight over spell, while targeting different lengths (short: 7–10 m, good: 4–7 m, full: 0–4 m from the batter’s stumps, respectively) in a randomized order. Trunk, knee and shoulder kinematics and ground reaction forces at front foot contact (FFC), as well as run-up velocity and …

High-Rise Apartments And Urban Mental Health—Historical And Contemporary Views, Danica-Lea Larcombe, Eddie Van Etten, Alan Logan, Susan L. Prescott, Pierre Horwitz
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
High-rise apartment buildings have long been associated with the poor mental health of their residents. The aims of this paper are to examine whether this connection is necessarily so, by reviewing the evidence relating to the relationships between high-rise living and social wellbeing, occupant’s stress levels, and the influence they have on mental health. From selected literature, psychological stress and poor mental health outcomes of the populations that live in high-rise apartments are indeed apparent, and this is particularly so for apartments in poor neighbourhoods. Yet many apartments in developed cities are in affluent areas (particularly those with views of …

Attitudes Of Doctors And Nurses Toward Patient Safety Within Emergency Departments Of A Saudi Arabian Hospital: A Qualitative Study, Naif Alzahrani, Russell Jones, Mohamed E. Abdel-Latif
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: The attitudes of doctors and nurses toward patient safety represent a significant contributing factor to hospital safety climates and medical error rates. Yet, there are very few studies of patient safety attitudes in Saudi hospitals and none conducted in hospital emergency departments. Aims: The current study aims to investigate and compare the patient safety attitudes of doctors and nurses in a Saudi hospital emergency department. Materials and Method: The study employed a qualitative research design via semi-structured interviews with Saudi and non-Saudi doctors and nurses working in a Saudi hospital emergency department to determine their attitudes and experiences about …
Movement-Versus Sporting-Based Physical Education In Elementary Schools: Does Either Ensure Quality?, Joseph John Scott
Movement-Versus Sporting-Based Physical Education In Elementary Schools: Does Either Ensure Quality?, Joseph John Scott
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Within the physical education literature, there remains to be contentions between the effectiveness of sporting- and movement-based approaches. Whilst both have noted strengths and weaknesses, there is little research into whether either is leading to quality physical education in Australian elementary schools. This paper therefore examines two of the common models based approaches to teaching physical education in elementary schools against the five interrelated propositions of the Australian Curriculum to determine if either pedagogical approach is leading to quality physical education. This paper draws on current literature, curriculum frameworks and pedagogical recommendations to determine the value of a models based …
No Human Ever Made A Cathedral Such As This: Scoping The Ecology Of The Carols By Candlelight Effect In Australia’S Open-Air Environments, Robin Ryan
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
During Australia’s dry December, traditional and popular forms of caroling shape the sight and sound of the key Christian festival of Christmas. Creative connections between belief, place, and music are characteristically manifest in focused open-air environments of beach, bushland or park. Reasoning from gospel belief that the very first “Christmas carol” emanated from a heavenly host of angels singing to an audience of shepherds in a field, caroling alfresco is an appropriate activity. How, then, do Australian caroling venues become conducive to environmental spheres of sound and influence? While the annual mass Carols by Candlelight concerts televised from Melbourne and …
The Visual Realism Continuum: The Roles Of High And Low-Fidelity Pictures, Stuart Medley
The Visual Realism Continuum: The Roles Of High And Low-Fidelity Pictures, Stuart Medley
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The human brain has a tolerance for varied views of objects which allows it to regard new impressions in the eye as objects perhaps previously seen but under different viewing conditions. This tolerance is a function of visual constancies, where the brain knows that the eye is looking at a familiar object but under changed ambient lighting conditions, position or distance, and so on. Lower fidelity pictures, deployed by the image-maker, allow for these more generalized views of objects to be presented to the viewer rather than the decontextualized moment of reality captured in the photograph. Pictures, either representing visual …
Multiple Perspectives On Attachment Theory: Investigating Educators’ Knowledge And Understanding, Nadia Wilson-Ali, Caroline Barratt-Pugh, Marianne Knaus
Multiple Perspectives On Attachment Theory: Investigating Educators’ Knowledge And Understanding, Nadia Wilson-Ali, Caroline Barratt-Pugh, Marianne Knaus
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper presents findings from a study investigating the multiple perspectives of attachment theory and practice through the voices of early childhood educators. Attachment theory has influenced research, policy and practice over the last six decades, offering a framework for understanding risk and protective factors in early childhood. Despite the increasing literature highlighting the importance of attachment relationships, attachment theory has been primarily considered from a medical health or psychological perspective and little is known about educators’ perspectives of attachment theory. In total, 488 Australian educators responded to the online survey, demonstrating a wide interest in the topic of attachment. …
Wellness In Allied Health Students: The Case For Change, Abigail Lewis, Alison Kirkman, Lisa Holmes
Wellness In Allied Health Students: The Case For Change, Abigail Lewis, Alison Kirkman, Lisa Holmes
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Introduction: The case for change. There are increasing mental health issues among young people, including higher education students. millennial students face unique challenges relating to attention, critical thinking and managing stress. Specifically, allied health students engage in multiple placements in which they need to interact with real people in real time while being evaluated in assessment and treatment strategies. Some universities have been using wellness programs and mindfulness strategies to support student mental health across campuses for some time. However, as allied health students face unique challenges, there is a need for a particular focus on wellness at an individual …

The Nexus Between Social Impacts And Adaptation Strategies Of Workers To Occupational Heat Stress: A Conceptual Framework, Victor Fannam Nunfam, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante, Eddie John Van Etten, Jacques Oosthuizen, Samuel Adams, Kwasi Frimpong
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Adverse effects of occupational heat stress in the context of the changing climate on working populations are subtle but considerably harmful. However, social dimensions and impacts of climate change–related occupational heat concerns on workers’ safety and health, productivity and well-being are often overlooked or relegated as minor issues in social impact analyses of occupational heat exposure due to climate change. This paper offers a conceptual framework based on an appraisal and synthesis of the literature on social impacts of climate change–related occupational heat exposure on workers’ safety and health, productivity and social welfare and the quest to localise and achieve …
Ex-Post Service Contract Performance Management, Brian Forbes, Malcolm Brady
Ex-Post Service Contract Performance Management, Brian Forbes, Malcolm Brady
Articles
This paper highlights how contract incompleteness can threaten the performance of public procurement facilities management contracts during their implementation stages, based on a multiple case study comprising five public procurement services contracts. The paper takes a principle-agent view and with the unit of analysis being the contract itself. The paper shows that contract contingencies are almost inevitable and may stem from the written contract or from the participating organisations. Written and unwritten contract management mechanisms were used in practice to deal with contingencies as they arose in the services case studies examined. The paper found that written contracts do not …

The Inconsentability Of Facial Surveillance, Evan Selinger, Woodrow Hartzog
The Inconsentability Of Facial Surveillance, Evan Selinger, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Governments and companies often use consent to justify the use of facial recognition technologies for surveillance. Many proposals for regulating facial recognition technology incorporate consent rules as a way to protect those faces that are being tagged and tracked. But consent is a broken regulatory mechanism for facial surveillance. The individual risks of facial surveillance are impossibly opaque, and our collective autonomy and obscurity interests aren’t captured or served by individual decisions.
In this article, we argue that facial recognition technologies have a massive and likely fatal consent problem. We reconstruct some of Nancy Kim’s fundamental claims in Consentability: Consent …
Judicial Impartiality In An Empirical Era, Tigran W. Eldred
Judicial Impartiality In An Empirical Era, Tigran W. Eldred
Faculty Scholarship
The psychological dimensions of judicial impartiality is a topic of considerable interest, with a growing body of scholarship focused on the reasons judges often are unable to perceive their own biases.1 The attention is not on why judges intentionally downplay factors that can undermine their own objectivity, but rather on the empirical reasons that everyone, judges included, tend to be unaware of the impact of their own biases. This “bias blind spot,”2 a product of a series of unconscious cognitive and motivational factors, is at the center of the discussion, with even the Supreme Court making passing reference …

Graduate School of Social Work Publications and Research
Using data from 1,352 middle-school Israeli adolescents, the current study examines the interface of spirituality and character strengths and its longitudinal contribution to subjective well-being and prosociality. Participants were approached three times over a 14-months period and completed measures of character strengths, spirituality, subjective well-being (positive emotions, life satisfaction), and prosociality. Findings revealed a fourth-factor structure of character strengths that included the typical tripartite classification of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intellectual strengths together with spirituality emerging as a statistically autonomous factor. Spirituality was stable over time and contributed to higher subjective well-being and prosociality both cross- sectionally and longitudinally. Discussion focuses …
