In this dissertation, I focus on aspects of the Black experience concerning African American responses to anti-Black racism in the United States. The ideas I examine allow me to further the dialogue concerning quintessential questions pertaining to anti-Black racism that arise from the Black experience in America that are now reformulated to help African Americans respond to current forms of anti-Black racism. Have Black intellectuals historically accepted shared responsibility for racism? Do contemporary shared responsibility models hold African Americans responsible for anti-Black racism? The Effects Of Intergroup Contact On Intergroup Anxiety And Transgender Prejudice: An Examination Using Structural Equation Modeling, Yasuko Kanamori

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Background: Evidence suggests that transgender individuals face high levels of prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Despite the known negative impact of transgender prejudice, research is lacking on interventions to reduce transgender prejudice. One possible solution might be found in the intergroup contact theory, which has substantial empirical support as an effective strategy to reduce prejudice across diverse populations and situations. Aims: The present study sought to apply the intergroup contact theory to the study of transgender prejudice. First, the study developed and pilot tested the performance of the Transgender Affect Misattribution Procedure (Transgender AMP), a measure of implicit transgender prejudice. Second, …

Something In The Air: Effect Of A Narrative-Account Podcast On Empathy And Client-Centeredness In Occupational Therapy Students, Stephanie Bullard Lancaster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Empathy and client-centeredness are aspects of professionalism essential to the effectiveness of occupational therapy services. As such, both are key components of the educational process of occupational therapy students, as highlighted by the integration of both concepts in the standards set forth by the accrediting body of occupational therapy education programs. Additionally, although a host of anecdotal accounts support the significance of empathy and client-centeredness in the work of occupational therapy practitioners, there is limited evidence in the literature supporting specific treatments in addressing either in the education of occupational therapy students. Influences Of Parent Physical Activity Support And Physical Activity Modeling On Adolescent Physical Activity Engagement And Weight Status, Cardella Lashay Leak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Childhood obesity rates continue to rise with adolescents (12-19 years old) having the highest prevalence (20.6%) across all age groups. Previous studies have indicated the importance of physical activity (PA) to assist with reducing obesity rates among adolescents. Parents influence their adolescents PA as they are typically adolescents first exposure and gatekeepers to both direct and indirect PA behaviors through their support and modeling of PA. This dissertation used parent-adolescent dyads from the Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) study to examine the associations between parent PA support and PA modeling and adolescent moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) engagement …

Premature Treatment Termination In Integrated Primary Care: A Mixed Methods Investigation Among African American Adults With Chronic Pain, Courtney Maclin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite the growing number of U.S. patients impacted by chronic pain (Nahin, 2015), many, particularly African Americans go without adequate treatment due inequitable care (Anderson, Green, & Payne, 2009; Resnik, Rehm, & Minard, 2001). Even when the gold-standard treatment is accessible, many African Americans do not remain in care, electing to prematurely terminate treatment (Bonham, 2001; Green, Baker, Sato, Washington, & Smith, 2003). The Behavioral Model for Healthcare Utilization (BMHU) is widely used to understand how individuals engage in health care treatment and was recently expanded to be more inclusive for racial minorities (Bradley et al., 2002). However, little research …

As Toni Morrison states in her text, The Site of memory, early slave narratives were written with the purpose of providing a historical account that was representative of the race and of enticing readers to see the worth and human nature of the subjects. In doing this, Morrison notes that the authors fell short of revealing the interior life as it was often dubbed too terrible to relate. After examining the interior lives of the mother figures in the texts of Harriet Jacobs, Toni Morrison, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, and Valerie Martin, it becomes clear that these maternal figures were not merely …

This dissertation examines the portrayal of physically disabled characters in dramatic literature over the course of the late nineteenth through the twentieth into the twenty-first century. My core argument is that performance art, sideshows, and theatre are safe means by which people have been able to look fixedly at those who are different. Additionally, this project will address the historical context of certain plays productions and how our evolving understanding of, representations of, and conceptions about those who are different change over time. Theatre allows individuals to be seen and to see; thus, by utilizing the core concepts and ideas …
