A Need To Continue Healing: Report Of Findings From An Autoethnographic Study, David T. Culkin
A Need To Continue Healing: Report Of Findings From An Autoethnographic Study, David T. Culkin
The Qualitative Report
This article reviews the design and findings of an autoethnographic study on identity development over time. The researcher wanted to know how an adult can make meaning from and develop through experiences of mental illness, spiritual awareness, and death. The purpose of this autoethnographic bildungsroman was to explore how a male in the general population describes how life events have influenced his identity development over a period of 23 years, spanning three decades. The author, as the researcher-participant, asked two primary questions: (a) How does the individual describe his adult development in terms of life events or “individual and cultural …

Why Does The Nhs Struggle To Adopt Ehealth Innovations? A Review Of Macro, Meso And Micro Factors, Sheena Asthana, Ray Jones, Rod Sheaff
Peninsula Medical School
Abstract Background Having a tax-funded and supposedly ‘National’ Health Service (NHS), one might assume that the UK is well-positioned to roll out eHealth innovations at scale. Yet, despite a strong policy push, the English NHS has been limited in the extent to which it has exploited the potential of eHealth. Main body This paper considers a range of macro, meso and micro factors influencing eHealth innovation in the English NHS. Conclusions While barriers to eHealth innovation exist at all scales, the fragmentation of the NHS is the most significant factor limiting adoption and diffusion. Rather than addressing problems of fragmentation, …
Kent Philpott And The Charismatic Roots Of Contemporary Conversion Therapy, Chris Babits
Kent Philpott And The Charismatic Roots Of Contemporary Conversion Therapy, Chris Babits
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
Second-wave feminism and the sexual revolution changed Americans’ relationship with not only sex and gender but also religion. In the late 1960s, Kent Philpott, a seminary student in San Francisco, experienced these changes first-hand. After feeling a calling to minister in Haight-Ashbury, Philpott increasingly devoted himself to one cause—remedying homosexual men and women. Philpott’s story, however, remains an underreported part of the history of contemporary conversion therapy. More specifically, Philpott’s charismatic beliefs have been lost in the expansive scholarship on sexual reorientation change therapies. The erasure of charismatic beliefs and healing practices from contemporary conversion therapy’s history only underscores the …

Employing the descriptive qualitative method, the research was conducted in Pasuruan, East Java and Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The selection of the research contexts was done purposively. This study shows that a marriage contract does not always imply the occurrence of sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse in a marriage contract may happen …

Women’S Resilience In Preserving Family Life Following An Earthquake In North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Tuti Budirahayu, Anis Farida, Sughmita Maslacha Amala S.
Journal of International Women's Studies
The earthquake in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, in August 2018 not only damaged the environment and the area around the epicenter but also shook public order. The shaking of economic and social infrastructure is being paid for by unpreparedness in facing disasters, and this is compounded by the mental deterioration of the community due to the loss of family members. This study aims to describe women's abilities during the aftermath of the disaster, and their efforts to overcome economic and social problems within their families. We also observed women's collective efforts as a way to eliminate trauma (trauma healing). This …

One of the policies which has been issued by the Indonesian government regarding madrasah (Islamic schooling) is the Government Regulation (PP) No 11 of 2010 on Guidelines for Gender Mainstreaming (Pengarusutamaan Gender-PUG) in Madrasah of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia. The issuance of this policy is an attempt to eliminate the “gender gap” that occurs in madrasah. For almost two decades, it has been issued, but the gender gap still occurs in madrasah. This is shown from the results of several previous studies. However, all of the previous studies on the achievement of PUG in madrasah …

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This work consists of three different projects.
In the first project, I analyze complexly sampled survey data, representative of the US population, to determine what lifestyle behaviors and notions held by participants are most significant with having had a cancer diagnosis. A logistic regression model was built using automatic variable selection with forward selection with backwards elimination. Our results show that sunscreen usage, level of agreeing with the statement "behaviors can affect high blood pressure", age, intent to eat more or less fruit, average daily hours spent watching tv or playing video games, and level of agreeing with the statement …

Habermas And The Question Of Bioethics, Hille Haker
Habermas And The Question Of Bioethics, Hille Haker
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In The Future of Human Nature, Jürgen Habermas raises the question of whether the embryonic genetic diagnosis and genetic modification threatens the foundations of the species ethics that underlies current understandings of morality. While morality, in the normative sense, is based on moral interactions enabling communicative action, justification, and reciprocal respect, the reification involved in the new technologies may preclude individuals to uphold a sense of the undisposability (Unverfügbarkeit) of human life and the inviolability (Unantastbarkeit) of human beings that is necessary for their own identity as well as for reciprocal relations. Engaging with liberal …

An Integrated Model Of Ethical Capital And Relational Wealth Of The Firm, Bradley Goronson
An Integrated Model Of Ethical Capital And Relational Wealth Of The Firm, Bradley Goronson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Key sources of competitive advantage for a firm include its various forms of relational wealth. These intangible relational assets exist because of a firm’s relationship with a given stakeholder. We argue that stakeholder perceptions of the morality of a firm can have substantive positive or negative effects on that firm’s relational wealth. Previous research has suggested links between perceptions of the morality of a firm held by stakeholders such as employees, strategic alliance partners, customers, and communities and the relevant relational wealth held by the firm in relation to those stakeholders. However, a comprehensive model and composite measure of these …

Dissertations - ALL
Mental health is a national concern. It is estimated that 43 million adults in the United States experience mental illness in a given year (National Alliance on Mental Health, 2015). Of those 43 million adults, approximately 6.8 million people who identify as African American or Black suffer from some type of mental illness (U.S. Bureau, 2015). Black Americans experience mental health symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem at alarming rates.
When addressing the concerns of mental health within the Black community, the mental health of Black women is of primary concern. Black women are more susceptible than Black …

Food Choice Reform: Shifting American Culture Toward Sustainable Diets, Colleen Mccarthy
Student Theses 2015-Present
Excessive meat consumption is associated with a wide range of environmental problems. Reducing meat consumption has been recognized as one of the most efficient ways to decrease one’s ecological footprint, yet meat consumption is still on the rise and many are not willing to make changes to their diets to include less meat. This paper discusses the problem of America’s continued and rising overconsumption of meat, with the end goal of developing and concluding which strategies are most effective at shifting American culture toward sustainable diets. Chapter 1 gives an overview of why a reduction in meat consumption is necessary …

A Neural Correlate Of Mindful Acceptance? Relating Individual Differences In Dispositional Acceptance To Error Processing, Emily Lynne Cary
A Neural Correlate Of Mindful Acceptance? Relating Individual Differences In Dispositional Acceptance To Error Processing, Emily Lynne Cary
Theses - ALL
Mindfulness is a multi-faceted construct that can be defined with more precision via a two-component model that includes self-regulated attention and an accepting orientation towards one’s experiences. Many of the observed benefits of mindfulness are associated with the orientation of acceptance, which is characterized by having less reactivity and judgment of one’s experiences and may be particularly relevant to the processing of errors, as errors often enlist cognitive and affective responses. Error processing is a system that involves detecting errors and adjusting behavior adaptively to prevent future errors. Error processing can be measured in the brain and thus could be …

Communication Faculty Articles and Research
Little is yet known about audiences who routinely seek out media content that is inspirational in nature. The current study expands the research on inspirational media by utilizing a nationally representative sample of U.S. audiences (n = 2,016) to explore relationships between inspiring media exposure, trait transcendence, and self-transcendent emotions. Results show that media content is a reliable source for everyday self-transcendent emotional experiences in U.S. audiences. These experiences are most frequently encountered by persons with high levels of trait spirituality and gratitude. The profile of U.S. audiences that seek out inspiring media is discussed.
Preserving The Trauma Narrative Of The Hunger Games: As Based In The Novels, The Films, And Morality, Rio Turnbull
Preserving The Trauma Narrative Of The Hunger Games: As Based In The Novels, The Films, And Morality, Rio Turnbull
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis discusses both the technical aspects and the moral aspects of preserving trauma when adapting a trauma novel to film, in specific relation to Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games. The thesis begins by arguing the Hunger Games story as a trauma narrative in its original form, but not so in its film adaptations, and supports this argument by defining the defining characteristics of the trauma narrative–which is voicelessness and an altered sense of self and society, embedded in the internal experience–and applying it to The Hunger Games trilogy, identifying where these occur in the novels and do not …

Abstract
This essay exposes the United States corrupt law enforcement and the psychological aspects of racism. It initially presents a connection between the 1960s and our contemporary time. Police Brutality in The United States illustrates what has and continues to affect the lives of African Americans. This essay broadcasts the injustices faced in the everyday lives of African Americans by unmasking the inequality and racist ideologies that the United States has been founded on. Initially it discusses the time period of which “Going to Meet the Man” was written. Baldwin’s piece is successfully compared and contrasted to demonstrate the connection …

Troubling “Technologies”: Exploring The Global Learning Xprize Using The Frameworks Of Skinner And Foucault, Tanya Elias
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This work focuses on the question: What might be wrong with large-scale approaches to learning? In posing this question, my purpose is not to suggest that large-scale approaches have no role to play within a complex educational landscape. Rather, I seek to introduce a starting point for more critical and nuanced approaches to achieving proper scale within digital learning, whether big and small. Organized around a series of stories from a train-ride home, I introduce a series of process-based “technologies” as defined by Skinner (1971) and Foucault (1988). After contrasting key concepts of Skinner and Foucault, I apply Foucault’s framework …

#PDBookChat was an affinity space of educators who read a professional book together and reflected on their learning through blogs, Twitter, and Google+. The book study culminated with an hour-long synchronous Twitter chat. Using Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (Herring, 2001) and speech act theory (Searle, 1976) this paper focused on the Twitter chat to examine the discussion among the participants, the specific ways in which they connected their responses to each other and the content of the professional book they read, and provided an analysis of the key themes of the chat. This research provides evidence of how educators use Twitter …
Scenarios Of Intractability: Reframing Intractable Conflict And Its Transformation, Kerry Whigham
Scenarios Of Intractability: Reframing Intractable Conflict And Its Transformation, Kerry Whigham
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
For those working toward long-term conflict transformation and atrocity prevention, cases of so-called “intractable conflict” are an enduring source of frustration, continually resisting what seems to be an otherwise useful toolbox of "lessons learnt" and "best practices." Referring to these cases as intractable, however, only serves to naturalize their intractability, rendering it an essential and immutable quality of the conflicts, and thus foreclosing options for engagement and prevention. Moreover, it obscures interventions that may have already emerged from within these conflicts that are transforming the way they play out. This article suggests, instead, to perceive these cases as scenarios of …
