Social Media Utilization For Policing And Crime Prevention In Lagos, Nigeria, Sunmisola Eniola Peters, Usman Adekunle Ojedokun

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The benefits embedded in the use of social media for policing and law enforcement are increasingly becoming recognized globally. Despite the growing popularity of social media in Nigeria, empirical information on the disposition of police personnel toward their adoption for policing and crime investigation are generally scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the use of social media for policing and crime prevention among 122 police officers serving at the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command. The research design was descriptive and cross-sectional. Survey questionnaire and key informant interview methods were employed for data collection. Results indicated that respondents were generally …

Enhancing Emergency Care Environments: Supporting Suicidal Distress And Self-Harm Presentations Through Environmental Safeguards And The Built Environment, Stephanie Liddicoat Nov 2019

Enhancing Emergency Care Environments: Supporting Suicidal Distress And Self-Harm Presentations Through Environmental Safeguards And The Built Environment, Stephanie Liddicoat

Patient Experience Journal

Self-harming and suicidal distress are prevalent, worldwide healthcare issues. Existing literature explains that both self-harm and suicidal presentations at Emergency Departments are increasingly occurring, correlating to high costs in healthcare service delivery. This scoping review aimed to (1) identify the current body of literature which examined the relationship between design practice and service user experiences within Emergency Departments for self-harm and suicidal distress presentations, and (2) identify the ways in which the built environment could increase the efficacy of therapeutic efforts through improving service user outcomes and experiences. This scoping review established that there was a paucity of research at …

Patient-Initiated Second Opinions During Acute Hospital Care, Roni Gagin, Neta Hagani, Esti Zigelboim, Shiri Shinan-Altman Nov 2019

Patient-Initiated Second Opinions During Acute Hospital Care, Roni Gagin, Neta Hagani, Esti Zigelboim, Shiri Shinan-Altman

Patient Experience Journal

Second opinions are used in medicine in order to make better-informed decisions. Only a few studies have examined patient-initiated second opinions, and even fewer have examined it in the context of acute hospitalization. It is not clear whether patients and families are aware of this right and how often they exercise it during acute hospitalization. The objective of this paper is to identify factors associated with the awareness and utilization of patient-initiated second opinions. A survey was conducted among 92 neurosurgical patients who completed a questionnaire that included information regarding: awareness of second opinion consultations, reasons for not seeking a …

Service User Interview Panels For Recruitment To Uk Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services: A Questionnaire Study Exploring The Experiences Of Young People, Staff And Candidates, Sophie M. Allan Ms, Emma Travers-Hill Dr

Patient Experience Journal

Service user involvement is increasingly important in health and social care policy, including in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), but evidence evaluating involvement initiatives is lacking. This questionnaire study evaluated the use of young people’s (YP) interview panels in the recruitment of CAMHS staff, from the perspectives of YP, candidates and members of the staff interview panels. Self-report questionnaires were administered to YP, candidates and staff interview panel. This included quantitative and qualitative “free text” responses. YP’s panels were found to be important in hearing the voices of YP; participants all stated they would like YP to take …

From Diagnosis To Routine Care In Type 1 Diabetes In Children: Parents’ Experiences, Géraldine Heilporn, Maude Laberge, André Côté, Monia Rekik

Patient Experience Journal

Having a child who lives with a Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) can represent a high burden for parents. The objective of our study is to identify and analyze the main challenges expressed by parents so that health care services better meet the needs of parents of T1D children. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of 19 T1D children regarding detection and diagnosis, initial management at the hospital, post-discharge adaptation including daycare or school reintegration, and long-term T1D monitoring. Data analysis was performed following an inductive approach. The results showed a lack of knowledge regarding T1D in the society, especially for …

Engaging Under- And/Or Never-Engaged Populations In Health Services: A Systematic Review, Lesley Moody, Erica Bridge, Vidhi Thakkar, Naomi Peek, Tanvi Patel, Suman Dhanju, Simron Singh

Patient Experience Journal

Patient engagement is a mechanism used to facilitate person-centred care, however, has not been realized in all patient populations. Often, many marginalized populations still remain under- and/or never-engaged. The purpose of this systematic review was to: 1) identify methods or interventions that have been used to engage under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services and 2) identify outcomes that are associated with engaging under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services. A comprehensive search using the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases was conducted to examine literature between January 2002 and January 2015. Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Data was …

Font Fails To Improve Reading On Assessment Tasks, Steven L. Powell M.A., Denton S. Warburton M.A., Ashton D. Trice Ed.D

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

Dyslexie is a font type that was created specifically to address the challenges that individuals with Dyslexia face. This font-type consists of distinctive characteristics in each letter that are suggested to be more easily distinguishable from one another, such as a bolded bottom portion of each letter, additional inter-letter spacing, a greater x-height, and capitalized letters that are slightly italicized and bolded. Although the author claims that it improves the reading performance of individuals with Dyslexia, the literature on its effectiveness is conflicting. The current study investigates the effectiveness of Dyslexie compared to two commonly used fonts on readers’ comprehension …

Due to the need for an occupation-focused intervention for childhood cancer survivors, we will be conducting a five week group occupation-based program to explore its impact on self-concept and self-esteem in childhood cancer survivors through occupational exploration and participation. The purpose of our study is to determine the efficacy of a group occupation-based intervention on enhancing areas of psychological well-being such as self-esteem and self-concept in childhood cancer survivors in order to support their transition from childhood to adolescence. Each week we will guide the participants through various activities with creative and self-expressive components such as poetry writing, creative movement, …

The Effect Of Parent-Infant Swim Classes On Maternal Parenting Competence, Emotional Availability, And Aquatic Handling, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano Nov 2019

The Effect Of Parent-Infant Swim Classes On Maternal Parenting Competence, Emotional Availability, And Aquatic Handling, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

Low parenting competence and limited emotional availability decrease the quality of the parent-infant relationship (Young, 2011; Sturge-Apple et al., 2012). However, co-occupations, or reciprocal relationships where the occupations of two or more individuals are interactively shaping each other, have been associated with strengthening parent-infant relationships (Pierce, 2009; Price & Stephenson, 2009). Parent-infant swim classes are co-occupation based interventions that facilitate close bodily contact and teach parents handling skills that can generalize into the home. Numerous websites allude to the benefits of these classes; however, there are currently no evidence-based claims supported by the occupational therapy literature. The researchers hypothesized that …

Performance Impairment Following Sleep Restriction - Is Caffeine The Antidote?, Erin E. Horil Nov 2019

Performance Impairment Following Sleep Restriction - Is Caffeine The Antidote?, Erin E. Horil

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that caffeine supplementation can lessen the negative effects that sleep restriction (i.e. shortened sleep duration) has on next day performance. Recent work done in our lab showed that sleep restriction has a negative effect on 3-km cycling time trial performance. Thus, it is important to investigate potential ways to lessen the negative effects sleep restriction may have on performance, since it is commonly seen in athletes. In this study, participants completed a battery of performance testing and then a heavy exercise session. This was followed by either a full night …

Assessment Project, Caroline Hamby 5887520

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

My project presents research related to prescription drug abuse. It lays out a brief, hypothetical intervention focused on psychoeducation around potential negative effects of prescription drug abuse. It proposes that patients being placed on strong painkillers must go though a brief program before they obtain their first refill. This will hopefully result in less prescription drug abuse over time, as measured by tools assessing problematic use.

A Bereavement Support Group For The Non-Religious, Charles L. Miller Nov 2019

A Bereavement Support Group For The Non-Religious, Charles L. Miller

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

In American culture, the approach of many to death and bereavement is couched in religious messaging. For much of the country, this approach resonates with a mourner's worldview. However, this is not the case with a growing segment of the population: individuals who identify as non-religious. While well-meaning, common strategies intended to comfort these individuals and help them navigate the mourning process may be less than effective, and in some cases even distressing due to religious content.

The design of the proposed intervention is intended to provide a purely secular support environment in which group members explore the cultural context …

A Home For The Spirit: Mental Health Care Delivery And The Homeless, John D. Rogers

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

I propose to present a poster summarizing a needs analysis for delivery of mental health care services to homeless people in small cities. The poster will provide highlights of a review of the relevant literature, best practice from current shelters, a summary of needs, a proposed model agency.

Homelessness is a significant and persistent issue in the United States and around the world. With public policy support, integrated care modalities, and new conceptualizations of treatment, those without homes can find help for mental health issues, and those in the helping profession can find rewarding opportunities to contribute to improved prognosis …

Is It ‘A Marriage Of True Minds’? Balanced Reading In Northanger Abbey And Persuasion, Lynda A. Hall Nov 2019

Is It ‘A Marriage Of True Minds’? Balanced Reading In Northanger Abbey And Persuasion, Lynda A. Hall

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Jane Austen often uses reading as a way to develop her characters. For instance, in Persuasion, Captain Benwick‘s melancholic disposition is revealed through his partiality for Romantic poetry, but Anne Elliot’s value for balance is expressed when she recommends moral essays. Other times, and not unfrequently, characters’ reading choice falls on the works of William Shakespeare—such as Hamlet, which Willoughby reads to Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, and the excerpts from Elegant Extracts we learn that Northanger Abbey’s Catherine Morland has memorized.

Some of Austen’s characters read Shakespeare with seductive intent, but others show their …
