Action Research In Doctoral Coursework: Perceptions Of Independent Research Experiences, Michelle Vaughan 5427231, Christopher Boerum, Linda S. Whitehead

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Action research focuses on creating meaningful and authentic change for those involved, whether in a classroom or community. This action research study examined the perceptions and potential benefits of action research coursework within a doctoral program. Participants were a cohort of doctoral students (n=7) that participated in a graduate level action research course. Students in this study experienced shifts in their identities as researchers, knowledge of the methodology, and their perception of the function and value of action research. The authors argue that action research is a viable course option in doctoral programs and the research skills supported through the …

From Language Learners To Language Teachers: Construction And Implementation Of Pedagogical Competence In Pronunciation Instruction, Chin-Wen Chien

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study explored 36 undergraduates’ knowledge construction and implementation of pedagogical competence in pronunciation instruction. These undergraduates were language learners themselves, but they were trained to become language teachers receiving pronunciation instruction in an English Pronunciation Instruction course at a university in Taiwan. Data in this study included interview, document, and videos. This study had the following major findings. First, their language competence, knowledge of phonology and pedagogy were constructed in the tertiary course through the instructor’s demonstration and their own teaching practice. Secondly, they demonstrated limited knowledge in explicitly explaining pronunciation features to their learners and designing drill practices. …

Mixed Methods Research To Improve Course Design For Preservice Teachers, Elizabeth S. White, Kyle E. Miller

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine student perceptions of a Child Development in Education course required for education majors. Participants (N = 167) completed pre and posttests assessing course content knowledge and a course satisfaction survey. Five students also participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses showed that course satisfaction differed by student major, with music education majors reporting lower satisfaction than elementary and special education majors. Further, while students believed they were more familiar with most course topics over time, their responses to course content questions did not consistently show learning gains. The qualitative analysis identified …

Perceptions Of African American College Women: Std/Sti Health Risk Behaviors Among African American Women, Dashawna C. Anderson

Honors College Theses

Sexually transmitted disease/infection (STD/STI) rates are on the rise for African American women. Recent literature argues that African American women may have a lack of education concerning STDs/STIs. To fill this gap in the literature, in-depth qualitative interviews, using a health equity lens, were conducted with ten college, African American women, living in the Southern United States, to gain their perceptions about the causes of STDs/STIs among the African American female population. Consistent with previous research, findings indicate that African American women may lack knowledge about STDs/STIs and be less likely to participate in medical check-ups. Participants were more likely …

Metamorphosis: A Minority Professor's Life, Richard Delgado

Articles

This article is a dark semiautobiographical takeoff on a famous novel by Franz Kafka I use the predicament of Gregor the central character in The Metamorphosis as a thematic metaphor to explain a series of events in the life of an outwardly successful man of color teaching law It proceeds in a series of 37 short vignettes told in the course of a bedside conversation in which my young firebrand Rodrigo turns tables on his usual foil and straight man "the Professor" and asks him a few questions about his life and career Until now the two had focused on …

The Clear And Present Dangers Of The Clear And Present Danger Test: Schenck And Abrams Revisited, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Articles

From March 3 1919 to November 10 1919 Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes's understanding of the First Amendment underwent a transformation In Schenck Debs and Frohwerk all decided in March 1919 Justice Holmes authored majority opinions that embraced a "bad tendencies" test as the constitutional standard required to regulate "“ or even proscribe entirely "“ political speech that includes a call to unlawful action Although Holmes used the language of a "clear and present danger" these decisions applied a very deferential standard of review and did not require the government to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the probability of political speech …

The Case Against Expanding Defamation Law, Yonathan A. Arbel, Murat Mungan

Articles

It is axiomatic that defamation law protects reputation This proposition"”common sensical pervasive and influential"”is wrong But it is wrong in a very instructive way and a careful examination of its mistaken assumptions carries deep lessons for First Amendment jurisprudence defamation law and the regulation of falsehoods across legal fields brbrThe key fallacy is the failure to recognize that laws not only affect how individuals behave but also how they think Whenever an allegation is made individuals decide whether and how much to trust it based on myriad factors One such factor is the strictness of defamation laws To the extent …

Children As Bargaining Chips, Clare Ryan Jan 2019

Children As Bargaining Chips, Clare Ryan

Articles

The parent- child relationship is one of the most valued and protected relationships in constitutional and family law. At the same time, the state has custodial power over children: a power that is necessary in some cases to protect vulnerable children from danger, neglect, and abandonment. But because the parent-child bond is so powerful, state actors can be tempted to exploit it for their own purposes. Custodial power over children provides state actors with the means to put pressure on the parent by threatening to remove the child. In these circumstances, the state uses the child as a bargaining chip …

Breath Practices For Survivor And Caregiver Stress, Depression, And Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder: Connection, Co-Regulation, Compassion, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Richard P. Brown, Chris C. Streeter, Martin Katzman, Monica Vermani Jan 2019

Breath Practices For Survivor And Caregiver Stress, Depression, And Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder: Connection, Co-Regulation, Compassion, Patricia L. Gerbarg, Richard P. Brown, Chris C. Streeter, Martin Katzman, Monica Vermani

NYMC Faculty Publications

Does compassion itself benefit the healing process or does the activation of neurophysiological processes, from which the experience of compassion arises, trigger a cascade of physical and psychological changes that support health and well-being? Exploration of the neurological substrates of compassion reveals multiple healing pathways that can be activated by mind-body practices. Furthermore, these pathways affect physical health, emotion regulation, and how we perceive and relate to others.

Physiological states affect the capacity for empathy, compassion and understanding. A state of calm alertness based on sympatho-vagal balance may support such high-level prosocial functions. Evidence suggests that polyvagal-informed mind-body practices, particularly …

Just Preservation: From Vision To Reality, Rupu Gupta Jan 2019

Just Preservation: From Vision To Reality, Rupu Gupta

Animal Sentience

Treves et al. propose a tangible shift in current discourse and practice related to the human relationship with other forms of nature. They aim to instill an ethical stance in human perspectives on nature, advocating the idea of trustees as advocates for non-human nature in consensus-building scenarios. This commentary raises questions about the practicality of a wide-scale culture shift in values towards non-human nature, and the power dynamics that are inevitable in multi-stakeholder settings.

Just Policy Paralysis?, Clare Palmer, Bob Fischer Jan 2019

Just Policy Paralysis?, Clare Palmer, Bob Fischer

Animal Sentience

Treves et al. (2019) argue that policy making should include the interests and well-being of present and future generations of humans and nonhumans. There are deep and abiding conflicts of interest both between and within these groups. Trying to factor in so many considerations is likely to generate political gridlock. The authors need to explain how to avoid this.

The Intrinsic Value Of Nature, Joanna E. Lambert Jan 2019

The Intrinsic Value Of Nature, Joanna E. Lambert

Animal Sentience

Treves et al. explain the need to preserve the rights of nonhuman species, human youth, and future generations. Although conservation biology has claimed to have an intrinsic valuation ethic since its inception in the 1980s, many aspects of the field have taken a decidedly anthropocentric and instrumentalist trajectory. This has important consequences for conservation-related policy and practice at all scales: local, regional, and global.

Human Interests, Helen Tiffin Jan 2019

Human Interests, Helen Tiffin

Animal Sentience

Treves et al.’s proposal is welcome, but it will have to face at least four challenges: the interconnectedness of the human and the nonhuman portions of the biosphere, conflicts of interest, human overpopulation, and capitalism itself.

Student Involvement In Ieps, Lauren Pounds, Joshua Cuevas Dr. Jan 2019

Student Involvement In Ieps, Lauren Pounds, Joshua Cuevas Dr.

Georgia Educational Researcher

There has been a recent initiative for students to be involved in their Individualized Education Plan. The goal is for students to become self-advocates and learn to develop goals that pertain to their interests. The study examined this process of including students by addressing three questions. First, does student involvement in their IEP lead to greater mastery of IEP goals? Second, does student involvement in their IEP impact academic achievement? Third, in what ways does the Self-Advocacy Strategy, IPLAN, increase student participation in IEP meetings? Three students participated in the study by providing inventory on their strengths, weaknesses, and what …

The Interview Project: A Way Of Bridging Theory And Practice In Early Childhood Mathematics Preservice Teacher Education, Doris Santarone

Georgia Educational Researcher

Twenty-nine early childhood preservice teachers (PSTs) participated in an Interview Project. The project’s goals were for the PSTs to apply their knowledge of research on children’s mathematics in their interactions with a child and to learn to listen to and learn from children. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the project and determine whether it met these goals. Pre and post data were collected, and I found that the PSTs showed a significant improvement in their ability to describe and analyze a child’s mathematics and to use their listening to make appropriate instructional decisions. In addition, I found …

The Peer Experience For Older People Encouraging Other Older People To Engage In Resistance Training: A Qualitative Study, Elissa Burton

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Resistance training (RT) can maintain and improve physical and mental health in 2 older adults, but this population has low levels of participation in RT. Linking older people 3 already participating in RT (i.e. peers) with those who have not may promote and maintain 4 adherence to RT participation. This qualitative study explored the experience of peers in 5 encouraging participation in RT among older community-dwelling adults. Data were collected 6 using focus groups, researcher observations, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic 7 analysis was conducted. Older people (n=8) who had engaged in RT for at least two months 8 prior to …

Elevated Serum Homocysteine Levels Have Differential Gender-Specific Associations With Motor And Cognitive States In Parkinson’S Disease, Megan C. Bakeberg, Alexa Jefferson, Maddeson Riley, Michelle Byrnes, Soumya Ghosh, Frank L. Mastaglia, Malcom K. Horne, Sarah Mcgregor, Rick Stell, Jade Kenna, Sue Walters, Dana Hince, Ryan S. Anderton

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Studies attempting to elucidate an association between homocysteine and symptom progression in Parkinson’s disease (PD) have had largely discrepant findings. This study aimed to investigate elevated serum homocysteine levels and symptom progression in a cohort of PD patients.

Methods: Serum homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 levels were measured in 205 people with PD and 78 age-matched healthy controls. People with Parkinson’s disease underwent a battery of clinical assessments to evaluate symptom severity, including motor (MDS-UPDRS) and cognitive (ACE-R) assessments. Multivariate generalized linear models were created, controlling for confounding variables, and were used to determine whether serum markers are associated …

In-Between Epistemic Paradigms Of Disablement: A Reflective Journey, Daniel James Mcnair Jan 2019

In-Between Epistemic Paradigms Of Disablement: A Reflective Journey, Daniel James Mcnair

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The author explores feelings of in-betweenness, hybridity, and dislocation (Aoki, 2005; Bhabha, 2007/1994; Saïd, 1994) as he contemplates the meaningfulness of a liminal placement between two epistemic worlds—that of his more recent experiences as a curriculum studies scholar and his previous training as a postpositivist practitioner of school psychology. This self-study engages pedagogical possibilities of in-between spaces (Aoki, 2005; He & Ross, 2012; Baszile, 2006) to construct a lived curriculum that challenges traditional stereotypes of autism and postsecondary disability services. To guide this critical self-reflective inquiry, the author applies the concepts of Joseph Schwab’s (1973) curriculum commonplaces along with William …

Are Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Associated With Trauma Exposure And Gender? An Empirical Analysis Of Self-Reported Trauma And Health Histories Of Men And Women, Meghan Lacienski Jan 2019

Are Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Associated With Trauma Exposure And Gender? An Empirical Analysis Of Self-Reported Trauma And Health Histories Of Men And Women, Meghan Lacienski

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

A growing body of research indicates an association between trauma, inflammation, and chronic inflammatory disease; however, the mechanisms of this relationship are not fully understood, and the salience of potential risk factors, such as cumulative effects of trauma, trauma type, and gender, remain unclear. Trauma is associated with poor mental and physical health, such as PTSD, depression, and chronic inflammatory conditions, and this association may be stronger when certain risk factors are considered (Brody, Pratt, & Hughes, 2018; Groer, Kane, Williams, & Duffy, 2014; Husky, Mazure, & Kovess-Masfety, 2018; Kilpatrick et al., 2013). For example, sexual trauma and multiple traumatic …

A Fiction Of Fragmented Falsehoods: Curriculum Of Unwanted Roads Traveled, Katherine Wyatt Jan 2019

A Fiction Of Fragmented Falsehoods: Curriculum Of Unwanted Roads Traveled, Katherine Wyatt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is an inquiry centered on lived ‘otherness’ in different social experiences. Fiction and illustrations are both creative outlets that provide opportunities of curriculum growth by offering the viewer realistic portrayals dealing with truth and factors that make us fundamentally human. “Fiction elicits an interpretation of the world by being itself a worldlike object for interpretation” (Dillard, 1988, p. 155). This study uses fiction and illustrations as vehicles of communication to provide an awareness regarding social issues in everyday lived experiences, exposing the reader to the social, cultural and historical realities persistently impeding the shared constructs of human experiences. Structuring …
