Strategies For Incorporating Systems And Practices Into Manufacturing Environments To Increase Employee Engagement And Reduce Turnover For Front-Line, Millennial Employees, Karen Fitzgerald
Theses and Dissertations
Generation Y has a reputation of being lazy, entitled, and self-centered. Other generations struggle to find ways to relate and work with them. Companies are spending large sums of money to learn how to engage and lead with them. This study examined the factors that affect front-line millennial employee’s engagement and turnover in a manufacturing environment. It also identified systems and practices to engage and reduce turnover with millennial front-line employees in a manufacturing environment. From a study of 50 employees, leadership and purpose were among the highest scored factors that impacted engagement and turnover for the millennial generation. Additionally, …

Healthcare Leadership Styles, Competencies And Affinity For Technology In The Digital Era, Zahra Ghafari
Theses and Dissertations
Digital technology has become a continuous disruptor in healthcare research, education, record keeping, and communication, resulting in both opportunities and challenges. The purpose of this study was fourfold, to (a) identify the leadership practices of healthcare executives, (b) measure the attitudes of healthcare leaders toward technology, (c) explore the relation between leadership styles and attitudes toward technology, and (d) examine the relation between demographic factors (gender, age, practice type) and attitudes toward technology. Healthcare leaders in the United States were recruited from different specialties. They were asked to respond to 3 survey instruments: The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ5X), Affinity for …

Out At Work: A Phenomenological Study Of Influencers In A Persons Choice To Self-Disclose Sexual Orientation In The Workplace, Norman Matthew Barbour
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study done through phenomenological and lived experience research, set out to further the understanding of out at work employees and explore the factors that most influenced their decision to come out in the workplace. 11 employees across the country who identified as out-at-work were interviewed and asked to describe the things that were most influential to them in the process of deciding whether to come out. Findings indicated that employees were motivated by a desire to help others by being out, the visibility of other out-at-work employees, and multiple supportive leadership behaviors. Employees also indicated that there were …

The Role Of Religiosity, Spirituality, And Creative Arts In The Recovery Process Of Latina Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse, Bridget M. Vazquez
The Role Of Religiosity, Spirituality, And Creative Arts In The Recovery Process Of Latina Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse, Bridget M. Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study aimed to examine the use and effectiveness of religiosity, spirituality, and creative arts as culturally sensitive forms of coping among adult Latina and/or Hispanic child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. Research has demonstrated that methods of coping serve as culturally sensitive techniques that help Latinas cope with CSA experiences by fostering feelings of empowerment, pride, and safety (Becker, 2015; Collins, O'Neill-Arana, Fontes, & Osseg, 2014; Ligiero, Fassinger, McCauley, Moore, & Lyytinen, 2009; Marques et al., 2016; Meston, Lorenz, & Stephenson, 2013; Sabina, Cuevas, & Schally, 2012; Sweig, 2000). Despite these findings, these interventions with this specific …
A Multi-Case Study Of A Problem-Based Learning Approach To Teacher Professional Development, Michaela Jacobsen
A Multi-Case Study Of A Problem-Based Learning Approach To Teacher Professional Development, Michaela Jacobsen
Theses and Dissertations
Although professional development (PD) is critical for teachers to develop as professionals, many teachers do not receive PD that is beneficial to their learning. Research demonstrates that effective teacher PD is PD that promotes active learning, emphasizes collaboration, is sustained over time, is correlated to teachers’ specific contexts and curriculum, and is coherent with the school as a whole. For the purposes of this study, the theoretical framework of constructivism was used, focusing on the learning theories of Dewey and Vygotsky. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an approach to learning that draws on the principles of constructivism. A PBL approach to …
Enhancing Organizational Agility Within The Human Resources Function, Nathan Bushey
Enhancing Organizational Agility Within The Human Resources Function, Nathan Bushey
Theses and Dissertations
Organizational agility describes a firm’s dexterity in making necessary changes to sustain and enhance performance. This mixed methods study examined the nature of agility and the impacts of internal processes on agility within the human resources (HR) function of a telecommunications organization in the United States. Both survey and interview data were collected. Quantitative data were collected and statistically analyzed. Qualitative insights were coded to identify trends in the respective datasets. Study findings indicate the case organization had a moderate degree of agility and that its attunement to the external environment was variable. The data also suggested that leadership style, …
Adaptation Of A Resilience-Oriented Stress Management Intervention For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Tamara Michele Rumburg
Adaptation Of A Resilience-Oriented Stress Management Intervention For Youth With Type 1 Diabetes, Tamara Michele Rumburg
Theses and Dissertations
Managing type 1 diabetes involves a complex treatment regimen, and often results in increased stress and mental health issues in youth and families as youth enter adolescence. Research indicates that effective management of diabetes-related stress can have a positive impact on both the psychological and physical health of youth and their families. While traditional stress management interventions have aimed to reduce stress through coping, building resilience is a more recent approach to stress management that can be cultivated even in the absence of stress. Interventions specifically aimed at increasing resilience in youth with chronic illnesses have shown promising results; however, …
Best Practices In Addressing Diversity In Clinical Supervision: A Survey Of Experienced Supervisors, Yeung Chan
Best Practices In Addressing Diversity In Clinical Supervision: A Survey Of Experienced Supervisors, Yeung Chan
Theses and Dissertations
The focus in this exploratory study was to investigate the opinions of licensed psychologists, who were experienced in clinical supervision, to obtain a list of specific supervisor behaviors and practices considered to be most important to address diversity in clinical supervision. Forty-four licensed psychologists completed the web-based questionnaire assessing opinions regarding the most important multicultural supervisory behaviors and practices. Results of the chi-square goodness-of-fit test indicated the frequencies of ratings were not equally distributed within this sample, indicating a level of consensus among survey participants. The results showed that when addressing multicultural and diversity issues in supervision, supervisors tend to …
First-Generation College Students' Family Role Transitions In College: A Psychoeducational Support Group, Kimia Poosti
First-Generation College Students' Family Role Transitions In College: A Psychoeducational Support Group, Kimia Poosti
Theses and Dissertations
The college student population continues to grow diverse in many ways, including the evolving cohorts of first-generation college students (FGCS). These students, whose student generational status is defined by having parents who have not enrolled in post-secondary education, enter college with a different background than their peers who have parents familiar with the college experience. This difference accounts for some challenges regularly faced by FGCS, including sensed tension within their family system and overall distress as they transition from their home-oriented to school-oriented roles. This student population lacks resources that aid understanding and management of new challenges within the family …

Between 1960 and 2010, Professor Miller collected about 720 newspaper reports on witchcraft in East Africa from local sources. Reports for Malawi and Zambia were dropped from this analysis to establish a collection of 521 reports for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. This database has yet to be fully analyzed, and is made available here for further research and publication in the understanding of witchcraft violence. The data may be sorted by date, country, press source, or by major topic using the Excel spreadsheet referenced below. Instructors in such organizations as police academies and NGOs concerned with violence against women may …
The (Limited) Constitutional Right To Compete In An Occupation, Rebecca Haw Allensworth
The (Limited) Constitutional Right To Compete In An Occupation, Rebecca Haw Allensworth
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Is there a constitutional right to compete in an occupation? The “right to earn a living” movement, gaining steam in policy circles and winning some battles in the lower courts, says so. Advocates for this right say that the right to compete in an occupation stands on equal footing with our most sacred constitutional rights such as the right to be free from racial discrimination. This Article takes a different view, arguing that while there is a limited constitutional right to compete in an occupation, it is—and should be—weaker than these advocates claim. Some state licensing laws run afoul of …
They, Them, And Theirs, Jessica A. Clarke
They, Them, And Theirs, Jessica A. Clarke
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Nonbinary gender identities have quickly gone from obscurity to prominence in American public life, with growing acceptance of gender-neutral pronouns, such as “they, them, and theirs,” and recognition of a third gender category by U.S. states including California, Oregon, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Washington. People with nonbinary gender identities do not exclusively identify as men or women. Feminist legal reformers have long argued that discrimination on the basis of gender nonconformity — in other words, discrimination against men perceived as feminine or women perceived as masculine — is a harmful type of sex discrimination that the law should redress. But …
How The First Forty Years Of Circuit Precedent Got Title Vii's Sex Discrimination Provision Wrong, Jessica A. Clarke
How The First Forty Years Of Circuit Precedent Got Title Vii's Sex Discrimination Provision Wrong, Jessica A. Clarke
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The Supreme Court will soon decide whether, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is discrimination “because of sex” to fire an employee because of their sexual orientation or transgender identity. There’s a simple textual argument that it is: An employer cannot take action on the basis of an employee’s sexual orientation or transgender identity without considering the employee’s sex. But while this argument is simple, it was not one that federal courts adopted until recently. This has caused some judges to object that the simple argument must be inconsistent with the original meaning of Title …
Policing, Databases, And Surveilance: Five Regulatory Categories, Christopher Slobogin
Policing, Databases, And Surveilance: Five Regulatory Categories, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Databases are full of personal information that law enforcement might find useful. Government access to these databases can be divided into five categories: suspect-driven; profile-driven; event-driven; program-driven and volunteer-driven. This chapter recommends that, in addition to any restrictions imposed by the Fourth Amendment (which currently are minimal), each type of access should be subject to its own regulatory regime. Suspect-driven access should depend on justification proportionate to the intrusion. Profile-driven access should likewise abide by a proportionality principle but should also be subject to transparency, vetting, and universality restrictions. Event-driven access should be cabined by the time and place of …

Introducing An Interdisciplinary Frontier To Judging, Emotion And Emotion Work, Terry A. Maroney, Stina B. Blix, Kathy Mack, Sharyn R. Anleu
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This special issue of Oñati Socio-Legal Series, titled Judging, Emotion and Emotion Work, is the result of presentations and discussions during an interdisciplinary workshop at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL) held in May 2018. This issue builds on the growing critique of the dispassionate ideal of judicial work, combining original theoretical insights with imaginative empirical analyses to extend the understanding of emotion in judging. Fifteen articles are presented in four themes: Theoretical, cultural and historical perspectives; Tensions of the dispassionate ideal; Social dynamics of emotion in judging; and Research methods, empirical insights and [changing] judicial practice. …
Empirically Investigating Judicial Emotion, Terry A. Maroney
Empirically Investigating Judicial Emotion, Terry A. Maroney
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The empirical study of judicial emotion has enormous but largely untapped potential to illuminate a previously underexplored aspect of judging, its processes, outputs, and impacts. After defining judicial emotion, this article proposes a theoretical taxonomy of approaches to its empirical exploration. It then presents and analyses extant examples of such research, with a focus on how the questions they ask fit within the taxonomy and the methods they use to answer those questions. It concludes by identifying areas for growth in the disciplined, data-based exploration of the many facets of judicial emotion.
Efficient Deterrence Of Workplace Sexual Harassment, Joni Hersch
Efficient Deterrence Of Workplace Sexual Harassment, Joni Hersch
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Although sexual harassment imposes costs on both victims and organizations, it is also costly for organizations to reduce sexual harassment. Legislation, education, training, and litigation have all been unsuccessful in eradicating workplace sexual harassment. My proposal is to establish financial incentives of sufficient magnitude to incentivize organizations to eliminate sexual harassment. The key challenge is in monetizing the harm caused by sexual harassment. I propose a new approach that draws on my research, which calculated the risk of sexual harassment by gender, industry, and age based on charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Using these risk measures, I …
The Rules Of #Metoo, Jessica A. Clarke
The Rules Of #Metoo, Jessica A. Clarke
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In their article Unsexing Pregnancy, David Fontana and Naomi Schoenbaum undertake the important project of disentangling the social aspects of pregnancy from those that relate to a pregnant woman’s body. They argue that the law should stop treating the types of work either parent can do—such as purchasing a car seat, finding a pediatrician, or choosing a daycare—as exclusively the domain of the pregnant woman. The project’s primary aim is to undermine legal rules that assume a gendered division of labor in which men are breadwinners and women are caretakers. But Fontana and Schoenbaum argue their project will also have …
Mirrors As Portals: Images Of Mirrors On Ancient Maya Ceramics, Julie Rogers
Mirrors As Portals: Images Of Mirrors On Ancient Maya Ceramics, Julie Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Maya believed there were multiple worlds in addition to the human world. Portals connected these worlds and allowed active engagement between the Maya and their gods. Without portals and the ability to communicate between the worlds the Maya belief system could not function. Evidence suggests the Maya believed reflective surfaces – mirrors and water surfaces – were portals to spiritual worlds. In this thesis, I examine the portrayal of mirrors as portals in Maya art, focusing on mirrors in scenes painted on ceramics. Combining archaeological, iconographical, and linguistic data I argue that mirrors functioned in service to ritual as …
Evaluating Pedagogical Methods That Influence Homework Assignment Completion, Kirk Sawyer
Evaluating Pedagogical Methods That Influence Homework Assignment Completion, Kirk Sawyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
College students enrolled in an online introductory engineering course are not completing their homework assignments at an acceptable rate which impacts them, the instructor, and the college. This research study employed a quasi-experimental evaluation model to assess the effectiveness of two pedagogical methods designed to positively influence student homework completion rates and student attitudes toward homework. Despite evidence that grading penalties encourage students to submit their homework assignments, such strategies have historically been unsuccessful for the course used in this study. The researcher designed two pedagogical interventions, along with a survey instrument, to measure the impact of the interventions on …
A Survey Of Investing And Retirement Knowledge And Preferences Of Florida Preservice Teachers, Richard Thripp
A Survey Of Investing And Retirement Knowledge And Preferences Of Florida Preservice Teachers, Richard Thripp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
New teachers are facing lower pay and less generous retirement benefits than the prior generation, yet their financial and retirement knowledge, concerns, and preferences have received little attention. To investigate these areas, the author developed a 39-item survey instrument and administered it to 314 preservice teachers in undergraduate teacher education courses at the University of Central Florida, who were primarily female elementary and early childhood education juniors and seniors ages 18–25. Florida public employees are offered an unusual choice between a traditional pension plan and a defined-contribution plan similar to a 401(k) in which they can select their own investments, …
Community Responses To Mass Casualty Events: A Mixed Method Approach, Jeffrey Payne
Community Responses To Mass Casualty Events: A Mixed Method Approach, Jeffrey Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores how traits of a mass casualty event and community institutionalization affect how a community demonstrates solidarity after a mass casualty event. A systematic examination of mass casualty events along these lines has not been conducted before. Theoretically, individual helping behaviors like altruism help explain individual involvement in demonstrations of solidarity while solidarity and resilience help in explaining group behaviors. A typology is proposed that breaks up mass casualty events into four different types: terrorism, criminal, weather and accidents. These types of events make up the majority of non-war mass casualty events. Experimentally a sample of students is …
Discovering Latent Gender Bias In Children's Stem Literature, Christine Herlihy
Discovering Latent Gender Bias In Children's Stem Literature, Christine Herlihy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A mixed method, exploratory, sequential research design was conducted to investigate the presence of latent bias in early childhood STEM literature content, applying a non-biased, sociocultural, STEM identity, theoretical framework. A survey of children's perceptions of gender and a content analysis found unintentional bias. Exploratory findings confirmed 102 children were gendering images. An examination of the relationship between the participants' gender and how the participant gendered AND preferred the images indicated differences existed between boys and girls. Children preferred images perceived as matching their own, with statistical significance. Girls were found to prefer images less than boys AND they were …
Repro, But Make It Fashion: Discourses On Sex, Sexuality, And Reproduction In Teen Vogue Magazine, Estefany Londono
Repro, But Make It Fashion: Discourses On Sex, Sexuality, And Reproduction In Teen Vogue Magazine, Estefany Londono
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are many possible sources for youth to become educated about sexuality and reproduction, however the media are cited as particularly powerful and prominent sources of information (Jaworski, 2009). Particularly in an era in which abstinence-only messaging dominates sex education, media become a source to which young people turn and where they receive much of their sex-based messaging. Due to backlash over problematic content that perpetuates gender stereotypes and relays harmful messages about sex and sexuality, some magazines, including Teen Vogue, have attempted to shift towards more feminist-minded content (Keller, 2011, Milkie, 2002). This study is a qualitative critical feminist …
Mapping Addiction: A Digital Psychogeographic Approach To America's Addiction Epidemic, Clayton Benjamin
Mapping Addiction: A Digital Psychogeographic Approach To America's Addiction Epidemic, Clayton Benjamin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Focusing on policy consultation, my dissertation consults on the current US addiction epidemic and aims to answer, "What is our disposition to addiction?" Borrowing and clarifying Ulmer's MEmorial method, as established in his text Electronic Monuments, the dissertation combines the ancient Greek practice of theoria, Deleuzian theory, and psychogeographic counter-mapping methods to trace ways in which ideological apparatuses construct addiction. The aim of the dissertation is to reveal an abject value by constructing MEmorials which provide space for individuals to mourn loss and see their relation to that loss. Through mourning, individuals strengthen their ties to other community members and …
Lifetime History Of Concussions And Behavioral Measures Of Anhedonia, John O'Donnell
Lifetime History Of Concussions And Behavioral Measures Of Anhedonia, John O'Donnell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Concussions are the most common neuropsychological problem in the United States and are associated with sequelae such as cognitive complaints and depression-related symptoms. Recent research suggests that head trauma is associated with anhedonia and that concussions have the potential to damage axons and postsynaptic connections in neural circuits that play a role in reward processing. Anhedonia may be better understood as an overarching construct with multiple subtypes including motivational, decisional, and consummatory. The current study examines the relationship between lifetime concussion history and subtypes of anhedonia using behavioral measures of reward processing: the Effort Expenditure for Rewards Task (EEfRT), Probabilistic …
