The Role Of Storytelling In Promoting The Adoptions Of Older Children, Sarah Melody Vaughn Nov 2019

The Role Of Storytelling In Promoting The Adoptions Of Older Children, Sarah Melody Vaughn

Senior Honors Theses

The need for older children to be adopted out of foster care in the United States is very prevalent. Adoption and foster care organizations are constantly changing and shifting their marketing techniques and promotional materials in order to advocate for the adoption of children out of foster care. One strategy that many organizations employ is a storytelling strategy. These organizations tell the stories of broken children stuck in the foster care system with no hope of finding a forever family. They also tell redemption stories; stories of families that have sacrificed everything to adopt a needy child. Although stories are …

Let History Repeat Itself: Solving Originalism's History Problem In Interpreting The Establishment Clause, Neil Joseph Nov 2019

Let History Repeat Itself: Solving Originalism's History Problem In Interpreting The Establishment Clause, Neil Joseph

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

The Supreme Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence is all over the place. The current justices have widely divergent views on the Establishment Clause's meaning, and the Lemon test has been widely panned by several justices. Originalist judges, however, have had a fairly consistent approach to interpreting the Establishment Clause. This largely stems from their reliance on history. This Note argues that their use of history in analyzing the Establishment Clause is flawed. Originalist Establishment Clause jurisprudence has been and is criticized for being unprincipled. And those criticisms are correct. Originalists encounter such criticism because the justices struggle to reconcile historical practice …

Self-Determination And Psychological Adaptation In Forcibly Displaced People, Numan Turan, Bediha İpekçi, Mehmet Yalçın Yılmaz Nov 2019

Self-Determination And Psychological Adaptation In Forcibly Displaced People, Numan Turan, Bediha İpekçi, Mehmet Yalçın Yılmaz

New England Journal of Public Policy

According to the UN Refugee Agency, as of 2018 approximately 70 million people were forcibly displaced because of intrastate and interstate conflicts. A majority of those people endured significant hardships, and a consensus is growing among researchers that forcibly displaced people have gone through potentially traumatic experiences that challenge their well-being and health. Consequently, a large amount of research focuses on their mental health concerns, whereas research focusing on their will to normalize their lives and grow after a traumatic migration is scarce. In this article, we highlight the efforts by forcibly displaced people to normalize their lives, pointing out …

Communicative Justice And Reconciliation In Canada, Alice Neeson Nov 2019

Communicative Justice And Reconciliation In Canada, Alice Neeson

New England Journal of Public Policy

Communicative justice co-exists with other dimensions of justice and emphasizes the importance of fair communicative practices, particularly after periods of direct or structural violence. While intercultural dialogue is often assumed to be a positive, or even necessary, part of reconciliation processes, there are questions to be asked about the ethicality of dialogue when one voice has been silenced, misrepresented, and ignored for decades. This article draws on twelve months of ethnographic research with reconciliation activists and organizations in Canada and considers the potential for communicative flows to help compensate for structural inequalities during processes of reconciliation.

Facial Expression Synthesis Using Mals-Based Bilinear Factorization Model, Jiaci Guo, Shuling Dai Nov 2019

Facial Expression Synthesis Using Mals-Based Bilinear Factorization Model, Jiaci Guo, Shuling Dai

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Study on the facial expression synthesis is a constructive and creative subject in the field of virtual reality technology. The bilinear model is used for facial expression synthesis by separating the identity factor and the expression factor. The translation procedure in the bilinear model always requires a repetitive computation of matrix inverse operations to reach the identity factor and the expression factor. This computation may be instable when the observation data has the correlation or noisy information. In order to increase the stability of the bilinear model for expression synthesis, the modified iterative least square (MALS) regression is introduced …

Learned Hand And The Objective Theory Of Contract Interpretation, Daniel P. O'Gorman Nov 2019

Learned Hand And The Objective Theory Of Contract Interpretation, Daniel P. O'Gorman

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

When scholars discuss Judge Learned Hand’s approach to contract interpretation, they refer to him as a “great formalist commercial lawyer” who was a “pure objectivist” exhibiting a “crusader’s zeal” for the objective theory of contract. He is identified as a leading advocate of the classical approach to contract interpretation, which dominated American law in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. But Hand’s reputation—built from three of his opinions—clashes with his reputation as a pre-Realist critic of formalism and as an intentionalist in statutory interpretation. This Article explores just how far Hand applied a strict objective approach to contract interpretation …

Editor’S Note, Padraig O’Malley

New England Journal of Public Policy

The articles in this issue of the New England Journal of Public Policy have their origins in presentations at a Chatham House conference titled “Rethinking Self-Determination,” February 2019, hosted by the International Communities Organization and the journal.

Among the many aspects of self-determination they address: the elasticity of the concept as a human right in the context of “peoples” (Freeman); individual rights versus collective self-determination (Summers); Biafra as an early case of internal self-determination—the territorial integrity of the state and the right of secession when “the right of a people to participate in the decision-making processes of a country is …

The "Statutory Rape" Myth: A Case Law Study Of Sexual Assaults Against Adolescent Girls, Isabel Grant, Janine Benedet

All Faculty Publications

This article examines three years of Canadian case law involving sexual offences against adolescent girls between the ages of twelve and seventeen inclusive, with a view to identifying the types of cases that are making it to court, whether these cases are resulting in convictions, and what are the types of sentences being imposed on individuals convicted of these offences. A significant majority of cases under review involved men considerably older than the complainant. The average age difference between the accused and the complainant was nineteen years and, where family members were excluded, 15.6 years. The small number of cases …

The prototype of the game is realized by the game engine. Experimental results showed that using mouse to roam in the system is easier than other interaction method and the somatosensory interaction is convenient for exercising the limb. By designing emoji for virtual characters, it is easy for users to learn other people's emotions and the comfortable distances for others. The results …

Risky Times And Spaces: Settler Colonialism And Multiplying Genocide Prevention Through A Virtual Indian Residential School, Andrew Woolford, Adam Muller, Struan Sinclair Nov 2019

Risky Times And Spaces: Settler Colonialism And Multiplying Genocide Prevention Through A Virtual Indian Residential School, Andrew Woolford, Adam Muller, Struan Sinclair

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

In this article, we examine how the logic of genocide prevention aligns with a settler colonial logic of elimination. We examine how the exclusion of cultural techniques of destruction from consideration contributes to the logic of elimination, and we suggest this is, in part, a structural problem built into the logic of genocide prevention. Along these lines, we interrogate linear and molar approaches to genocide prevention and propose, in addition to existing macro-level strategies, a molecular, everyday ethos of genocide prevention that is attuned to genocidal intimacies and seeks to foster anti-genocide habits and practices. In so doing, we argue …

Maternal Attitudes, Feeding Practices And Child Weight-For-Length Percentiles: Maternal Participation Vs. Non-Participation In A Prenatal Infant Nutrition Education Session, Connie S. Lewis Nov 2019

Maternal Attitudes, Feeding Practices And Child Weight-For-Length Percentiles: Maternal Participation Vs. Non-Participation In A Prenatal Infant Nutrition Education Session, Connie S. Lewis

Dissertations

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions nationally and internationally. All ages are affected resulting in physiological and psychological health consequences. Obesity-related habits that begin in childhood may continue into adulthood suggesting the need for developmentally targeted approaches. Efforts to reduce obesity should begin early in life with interventions targeting infants and young children. Is there a difference in infant feeding attitudes, the initiation of breastfeeding practice, the introduction of solid foods practice, and child weight-for-length percentiles at 12, 18, and 24 months between mothers who participated in a prenatal infant nutrition education session and mothers who did not participate? The purpose …

Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative heuristic study was to explore the emerging adults' lived experience of PAHIV. The aim of this study was to determine if the emerging adults were meeting the benchmarks of their developmental stage as their unaffected peers and to elucidate their voices to understand their essence of the experience of PAHIV. This study answered the questions: What is the emerging adults' lived experience of perinatally acquired HIV (PAHIV)? What benchmarks of the developmental stage are the emerging adults with PAHIV meeting? Philosophical Underpinnings: This study utilized the qualitative research approach with interpretivism and constructivism as the …

Testing An Intervention To Decrease Catastrophizing In Persons With Fibromyalgia, Pamela Jean Nelson Nov 2019

Testing An Intervention To Decrease Catastrophizing In Persons With Fibromyalgia, Pamela Jean Nelson

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a brief psychoeducational nursing intervention to alter catastrophizing and improve coping with fibromyalgia, a syndrome of chronic, widespread pain. Catastrophizing is defined as a negative way of thinking about pain that interferes with the development of pain coping self-efficacy, the confidence a person has in their ability to manage pain. In fibromyalgia, catastrophizing has demonstrated a strong relationship to pain severity and daily functioning, but brief interventions targeting catastrophizing have not been tested. Theoretical framework. Bandura's social cognitive model emphasizing self-efficacy as a determinant of behavior was used as …

Exploring The World Around You: A Guide To Learning About The Natural World, Jordyn Kuemerle

Honors Projects

This paper discusses the research, methodology, and purpose of my Honors Project. My project is a workbook for children to complete with their parents or guardians all about exploring nature. Language and literacy development is the overall focus of my workbook, but children who complete it also learn about shapes, colors, and comparing sizes in nature. The original inspiration for this workbook came from reading Molly Bang’s 2016 book, Picture This: How Pictures Work, and I originally wanted to make a children’s book in nature. After further research I found out that many educators and education professionals agree that children …
