Stress Reduction After Visiting Cats In A Cat Café, Nicole L. Beasley Nov 2019

Stress Reduction After Visiting Cats In A Cat Café, Nicole L. Beasley

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Research has attempted to induce stress and has been unsuccessful at demonstrating the efficacy of stress reduction. This may indicate that animal interaction is more beneficial when reducing longer-term stress rather than short-term stress, like what has been studied in the past. Additionally, animals may be more effective at reducing life stress as opposed to artificially produced stress.

Past research has limited the time participants may spend interacting with the study animals. The current study will allow participants to spend as much time as necessary with the café cats.

The present study will record a physiological marker of stress and …

The Challenge Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema Nov 2019

The Challenge Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We all have a sense of what leadership is, but as one author said, defining it is like nailing jelly to a tree. Everybody has a pretty good idea of what it is.  You can ask little kids what leadership is and they give you a pretty good idea.  But, defining it continues to be difficult, especially for empirical study.

Self-Esteem And Its Correlates To Academic Performance Among University Freshmen Students, Rogelio M. Hernandez, Merlene M. Bernal, Melanio T. Olea

Social Sciences and Development Review

Self-esteem is a personal opinion of an individual about herself/ himself and the appreciation of his/her worth. It refers to an accurate, justified, balanced appreciation of one’s worth as a person. However, it can also refer to inflated, grandiose, unwarranted sense of conceited superiority over others. Although it is assumed that self-esteem is a trait that is innate and stable across time within a person, studies have shown that it may not be the case sometimes. Some experts argued that this trait can be influenced by some factors such as family, peers, environment and school. Likewise, self- esteem is believed …

Christian Higher Education And Participation In The Redemptive Work Of God, John R. Markley Nov 2019

Christian Higher Education And Participation In The Redemptive Work Of God, John R. Markley

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This history of distinctively Christian institutions of higher education in America signals the importance of missional vigilance for stakeholders. This article proposes a framework for Christian faculty to approach their work of educating students in a distinctively Christian way, by orienting each discipline and field of study to the main points of redemptive history as defined by Christian theology. When we train students at a Christian institution, we should be training them to become participants in the redemptive work of God. By taking an intentional approach to this (i.e., orienting our disciplines and the subject-matter to redemptive history), we help …

Are There Shared Neural Correlates Between Dyslexia And Adhd? A Meta-Analysis Of Voxel-Based Morphometry Studies, Lauren M. Mcgrath, Catherine J. Stoodley Nov 2019

Are There Shared Neural Correlates Between Dyslexia And Adhd? A Meta-Analysis Of Voxel-Based Morphometry Studies, Lauren M. Mcgrath, Catherine J. Stoodley

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

Background

Dyslexia and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders (estimates of 25–40% bidirectional comorbidity). Previous work has identified strong genetic and cognitive overlap between the disorders, but neural overlap is relatively unexplored. This study is a systematic meta-analysis of existing voxel-based morphometry studies to determine whether there is any overlap in the gray matter correlates of both disorders.

Methods

We conducted anatomic likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analyses of voxel-based morphometry studies in which individuals with dyslexia (15 studies; 417 cases, 416 controls) or ADHD (22 studies; 898 cases, 763 controls) were compared to typically developing controls. We generated ALE …

Contingent Negative Variation: Sensitivity To Directed Attention, Lauren Ashley-Marie Dahlke Schenck Nov 2019

Contingent Negative Variation: Sensitivity To Directed Attention, Lauren Ashley-Marie Dahlke Schenck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The exact nature of the contingent negative variation (CNV) event-related potential (ERP) remains unclear after decades of research. Although this ERP has long been associated with anticipation of motor responses, it remains present in the absence of physical action. Attention and arousal may better account for production of this ERP. In the current study, we examined the role directed attention may play in CNV production, while controlling for the expectancy of stimulus presentation based on the mean probability of stimulus duration. We hypothesized that if direction of attention, rather than probability of stimulus presentation, had the most pronounced effect, differences …

Activity Patterns Of The Eastern Woodrat (Neotoma Floridana Illinoensis) In Western Tennessee, Jessica Davin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Activity patterns of the eastern woodrat (Neotoma floridana illinoensis) in southwestern Tennessee (Shelby Co.) were investigated at the Edward J. Meeman Biological Station. Patterns were captured using inrared, motion-triggered cameras at bait stations at 3 sites over seasons during 2013-2016. Photographs were examined to determine periods of activity and to observe different feeding strategies (solitary, aggressive, and non-aggressive). Analyses of data indicated that eastern woodrats were primarily nocturnal. The eastern woodrats showed greatest seasonal activity during the fall and approximately equal activity during summer, spring, and winter months. Analyses of data indicated they were solitary and agonistic towards conspecifics and …

Factors Influencing Curriculum Adoption In 2- And 4-Year Undergraduate Cybersecurity Programs, Todd A. Whittaker

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Increased demand in the cybersecurity workforce requires a significant response from colleges and universities in order to meet that demand. The federal government has emphasized cybersecurity education at all levels as a way to meet that demand, yet there is wide variance in curriculum defined by academics, industry, and government organizations. While there are many curriculum standards, little research has been conducted to investigate the drivers for curriculum adoption. This study aims to discover what factors influence the adoption of new curriculum at the undergraduate level through a quantitative adaptation and application of existing technology adoption models (e.g. UTAUT, UTAUT2, …

Are Father Depression And Masculinity Associated With Father Perceptions Of Maternal Gatekeeping?, Clare R. Thomas, Erin Kramer Holmes Nov 2019

Are Father Depression And Masculinity Associated With Father Perceptions Of Maternal Gatekeeping?, Clare R. Thomas, Erin Kramer Holmes

Faculty Publications

Maternal gatekeeping has been associated with reductions in father involvement and can have a negative impact on the family. Few researchers, however, have focused on how characteristics of the father contribute to gatekeeping. Consequently, this brief report is focused on associations between father depression, father adherence to masculine norms, and father reports of maternal gatekeeping. We further test whether a father's adherence to traditional masculine norms interacts with the relationship between depression and father reports of maternal gatekeeping. This study adds to the current literature on both maternal gatekeeping and father mental health. Participants in this study include 2,214 fathers …

Support From Inside Out: Exploring Whether Various Social Supports Assist In Reducing Prison Rule Violations, Sarah Renee Lazzari Nov 2019

Support From Inside Out: Exploring Whether Various Social Supports Assist In Reducing Prison Rule Violations, Sarah Renee Lazzari

Dissertations and Theses

Scholars argue that prison rule violations are a way to assess whether individuals are engaging in prosocial behaviors. Individuals who engage in prosocial behaviors, during periods of incarceration, are less likely to engage in behaviors that result in official rule violations. Decreasing rule violations is one way to work towards a safer prison environment, while also preparing individuals for release. The current study uses cross-sectional data form the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Facilities, in order to examine whether multiple types of prisons programs, which will be framed as various types of social supports, influence the frequency …

Entering A Community Of Writers: The Writing Center, Doctoral Students, And Going Public With Scholarly Writing, Sara Winstead Fry, Melissa Keith, Jennifer Gardner, Amanda Bremner Gilbert, Amanda Carmona, Sabrina Schroeder, Audrey Kleinsasser

The Qualitative Report

In addition to taking advanced courses, graduate students navigate a potentially challenging transition of learning to write for publication. We, the authors, explored solutions to this transition with a study designed to explore the research questions: How does a systematic effort to help doctoral students enter a community of writers via writing center collaboration influence doctoral students’: (1) proficiency with academic writing, (2) writing apprehension, (3) self-efficacy as writers, and (4) comfort with “going public” with their writing? We used a collaborative, multi-layered self-study research approach because it allowed us to focus on critical examination of teaching practices that are …
