A Quantitative Analysis Of Ceramic Distribution In The East Okeechobee Area, Stefanie D’Erasmo Jan 2019

A Quantitative Analysis Of Ceramic Distribution In The East Okeechobee Area, Stefanie D’Erasmo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The East Okeechobee area is situated along the southeast coast of Florida, throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and has proved difficult to access in a broad archaeological context. This is due to the blending of cultural characteristics from the surrounding areas and due to the suspected transitional nature of this region. To gain a better understanding of the cultural composition and interrelations of the East Okeechobee Area, this analysis statistically models, both synchronically and diachronically, the frequencies of ceramic types from multiple archaeological sites in and around this region.

Acute Response Of Neuroprotective Associated Biomarkers To Various Compound Resistance Exercises In Well-Trained Men, Trevor K. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examined if multi-joint resistance exercises could elicit expression of biomarkers associated with neuroprotection. Thirteen well-trained males performed 4 sets to failure at 80% of a one-repetition maximum (1RM) on the back squat, bench press, and deadlift. The biomarkers measured immediately pre- and post-exercise were brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), cathepsin B (CatB), and interleukin 6 (IL-6). There was a main time effect (p<0.01) for BDNF with significant increases in the deadlift (p=0.01) and bench press (p=0.01) conditions, but not the squat (p=0.21). There was a main time effect (p<0.01) for IL-6 with a significant increase in the squat (p<0.01). There was no significant increase in CatB or IGF-1 (p>0.05). Additionally, there was no significant relationship between BDNF and IL-6 response.

A Framework For Understanding Power Supply And Demand In Presynaptic Nerve Terminals, Karlis Anthony Justs Jan 2019

A Framework For Understanding Power Supply And Demand In Presynaptic Nerve Terminals, Karlis Anthony Justs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The molecular mechanisms of synaptic function and development have been studied extensively, but little is known about the energy requirements of synapses, or the mechanisms that coordinate their energy production with their metabolic demands. These are oversights, as synapses with high energy demands are more susceptible to degeneration and degrade in the early stages of diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscle atrophy and Parkinson’s disease. Here, in a structure-function study at Drosophila motor neuron terminals, a neurophysiological model was generated to investigate how power (ATP/s) supply is integrated to satisfy the power demand of presynaptic terminals. Power demands …

An Algorithmic Approach To Tran Van Trung's Basic Recursive Construction Of T-Designs, Oscar A. Lopez Jan 2019

An Algorithmic Approach To Tran Van Trung's Basic Recursive Construction Of T-Designs, Oscar A. Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

It was not until the 20th century that combinatorial design theory was studied as a formal subject. This field has many applications, for example in statistical experimental design, coding theory, authentication codes, and cryptography. Major approaches to the problem of discovering new t-designs rely on (i) the construction of large sets of t designs, (ii) using prescribed automorphism groups, (iii) recursive construction methods. In 2017 and 2018, Tran Van Trung introduced new recursive techniques to construct t – (v, k, λ) designs. These methods are of purely combinatorial nature and require using "ingredient" t-designs or resolutions whose parameters satisfy a …

Aqueous Microdroplet Generation In Oil-Free Environments, Mohammad Mastiani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Droplet microfluidics generates and manipulates microdroplets in microfluidic devices at high manufacturing efficiency and controllability. Microdroplets have proven effective in biomedical applications such as single-cell analysis, DNA sequencing, protein partitioning and drug delivery. Conventionally, a series of aqueous microdroplets containing biosamples is generated and controlled in an oil environment. One of the critical challenges in this system is that recovery of the aqueous samples from the oil phase is very difficult and often requires expensive and cumbersome post-processing. Also, the low Reynolds (Re) number characteristic of this system results in low throughput of droplet generation. To circumvent challenges and fully …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Kate Chopin’s stories including “A Pair of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” and “Azelie” are rich in subject-object relationships. Close text analysis helps explicate the power of these objects or things. A thing is animate and an object is not. The stockings, fiddle, and store objects are part of a transaction between things and people; what is an object to one character is a thing to another. Exploration of Victorian women and department stores illuminates how stockings overpower Mrs. Sommers. Research on share tenant life, violins’ value, and Louisiana mixed ancestry reveals how the fiddle enables Fifine and Cleophas …

This thesis considers the feasibility of using a Blockchain to facilitate secured information sharing between parties, where a lack of trust and absence of central control are common characteristics. Implementation of a Blockchain Information Sharing system will be …

Anti-Dna Antibodies In Systemic Lupus, Michelle Fay Cavallo Jan 2019

Anti-Dna Antibodies In Systemic Lupus, Michelle Fay Cavallo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two novel methodologies were developed for purification and functional (DNA hydrolytic) assessment of anti-DNA antibodies of IgG isotype from patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Earlier protocols for purification and analysis of antibody hydrolytic abilities were lengthy, laborious, and potentially disruptive to antibody function. Purification protocols failed to capture all four IgG subclasses and produced multiple bands outside the range of IgG on electrophoretic separation. Hydrolysis assays were discontinuous increasing the likelihood of introducing error and making them better suited to analysis of endpoint kinetics rather than reaction kinetics. A two-step, affinity-based purification protocol was developed which utilized magnetic Dynabeads …

Carbon Mountains And Silicon Valleys: Reality Imagined In The Age Of Technological Reproducibility, Raven Doyle Jan 2019

Carbon Mountains And Silicon Valleys: Reality Imagined In The Age Of Technological Reproducibility, Raven Doyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Realism, defined by its most influential theorist André Bazin has been, and continues to be, a dominant and defining cinematic discourse. However, the lack of regard for animation is in need of retrospection. No genre of film adheres more to the original principles of cinema’s intention than animation, yet it is discredited because of its derivative form. The purpose of this paper is to propose a redefinition of the impression of reality in cinema to create inclusion and space for animation and new, emerging technologies. This reality, redefined, is divided into two categories: the carbon and the constructed. Analyzed through …

A fishery independent survey (longline/gillnet) was implemented to 1) assess the effects of bait type [striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) versus Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus)] and mesh size (15.2 cm versus 20.3 cm stretch mesh) on elasmobranch species composition, catch-per-unit effort, and size distributions and 2) characterize elasmobranch abundance and distribution. From 2016 - 2018, 630 individuals (16 species) were captured, more often in the gillnet than the longline. Catch-per-unit-effort was significantly higher with mullet than mackerel. Species …

Children’S Moral Sensitivity: An Examination Of The Suspected Link Between Altruistic Punishment And Moral Judgments, Charles Dukes Jan 2019

Children’S Moral Sensitivity: An Examination Of The Suspected Link Between Altruistic Punishment And Moral Judgments, Charles Dukes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Developmental research on moral psychology has long been driven by the classic studies of Lawrence Kohlberg with an almost exclusive focus on reasoning. The adoption of an evolutionary perspective has opened moral psychology to investigations into the deep roots of morality. From this perspective, it is thought that group living (cooperation), evolved psychological mechanisms, disgust, emotion, and punishment make for the complex building blocks that is morality. Based on this notion, it is quite possible that morality is present early in life and driven by the forces of natural selection. Thus, moral development may be understood by taking a different …
