Impact Of One Night Sleep Restriction On Autonomic Function And Heart Rate Variability In Recreational Cyclists, Amanda J. Becker
Impact Of One Night Sleep Restriction On Autonomic Function And Heart Rate Variability In Recreational Cyclists, Amanda J. Becker
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Introduction: Sleep quality has been shown to influence autonomic function. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) responds to stressors by regulating key functions such as heart rate. Autonomic function can be monitored via heart rate variability (HRV). Athletes are prone to poor sleep quality due to psychological and physical stresses of training and competing. Our objective was to investigate the function of the ANS at rest and during exercise following a night of normal sleep (SLP+) and a night of restricted sleep (SLP-).
Methods: Subjects (n=9) completed a familiarization trial and two identical experimental trials under different sleep conditions: SLP- (3-hour …

The Effect Of One Night Of Sleep Restriction On Aerobic Exercise Performance, Lindsay Lickers
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Purpose: Sleep is essential for bodily recovery and is especially important for athletes who will sustain high volumes of muscle damage. Many athletes struggle to get enough sleep, particularly the night prior to competition for a variety of reasons. Long term sleep deprivation has definitively shown negative effects on athletic performance; however, little is known about the effect of a single night of reduced sleep. Methods: Complete data was gathered on nine subjects. Following VO2max testing and a familiarization trial, subjects performed two experimental trials that concluded with simulated 3- km time trials on a cycle ergometer: one …
Assessing The Prevalence Of Multidrug Resistant Salmonella Enterica From Stream Sediment And Poultry Litter In The Shenandoah Valley Of Virginia, Noah Greenman
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica present in stream sediment and poultry litter represent a critical health concern. A small number of S. enterica serotypes are responsible for most lab-confirmed infections in the US each year. To assess the prevalence of these significant strains, we isolated 88 S. enterica from stream sediment and poultry litter. Sequence data for all isolates were generated using an Illumina® sequencing platform, with long-reads for some isolates from the Oxford Nanopore MinION™ used in a hybrid genome assembly approach. Isolates were typed according to their serotype and multi-locus sequence type using SeqSero/SISTR and Enterobase respectively. Antibiotic resistance …

Pressure To Be Perfect: Eating Disorders In Sports, Genevieve Nitzsche
Pressure To Be Perfect: Eating Disorders In Sports, Genevieve Nitzsche
Writing Across the Curriculum
Eating disorders have become more prevalent in recent years as societal standards have gotten harsher. Typically, when people think about the type of people who develop eating disorders, the first thing that pops into their head is not athletes. There is an association between athletes and the need for great amounts of food to fuel their bodies. However, in sports such as wrestling and aesthetic sports, like gymnastics and figure skating, the emphasis of image and the pressure from their coaches can be extremely harmful to their mental health. This paper discusses specific statistics of the incidence of eating disorders …
Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
The prevalence of drugged driving has increased in the United States, and some prescription medications (e.g., zolpidem) cause impairment after the predicted duration of therapeutic action has elapsed. The aim of this study is to determine if bedtime administration of alprazolam similarly impacts driving performance the following day.
Volunteers were 14 healthy adults (6 males) who completed a double-blind, double-dummy within-subjects design study examining the effects of alprazolam (0.5, 1, & 2mg), zolpidem (10mg), and placebo administered at bedtime on driving performance the following day. The positive control condition was alprazolam (1mg) administered on the test morning. Driving simulator measures, …

The Lived Experiences Of Students With High Functioning Autism In Higher Education, Aida G. Miles
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A growing number of students with high functioning autism (HFA) are entering higher education; this number is expected to grow as the prevalence of autism continues to rise. Students with HFA face many challenges when entering higher education. These challenges produce an environment that impedes student success and potential degree completion. This study explored the lived experiences of 17 participants with HFA who were enrolled in private colleges and universities in a metropolitan area of the Midwest. Although disability services offices are mandated to provide accommodations to students with disabilities, some of the challenges faced by participants were not supported …

Experiences Of Providers In Caring For The Obese Hispanic Population, Emma Gladson
Experiences Of Providers In Caring For The Obese Hispanic Population, Emma Gladson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The national obesity rate continues to rise along with numerous correlating health disparities in Colorado. According to Andolf and Fisichella (2018), obesity currently affects 78.6 million people in the United States. Obesity is without a doubt a major health concern. Obesity in children and adolescents is a growing concern in the United States, where one fifth of the entire population from age two to nineteen in 2011-2014 was obese (Obesity, Diet and Mortality Trends, 2016). The objective of this project was to examine experiences of healthcare providers caring for the obese Hispanic population. Determining the experiences in providing care for …

The Relationship Between Body Mass Index (Bmi) And Sedentary Behavior Is Mediated By Negative Peer Interaction In Boys, Jacob E. Barkley, Gregory S. Farnell
The Relationship Between Body Mass Index (Bmi) And Sedentary Behavior Is Mediated By Negative Peer Interaction In Boys, Jacob E. Barkley, Gregory S. Farnell
2019 Faculty Bibliography
To determine if self-reported negative social interaction mediates the relationship between sedentary behavior and body mass index (BMI) percentile in boys. Twelve overweight/obese (≥85th BMI percentile) and 14 non-overweight (<85th BMI percentile) boys (10.5 ± 1.5 years old) completed surveys assessing overt peer victimization and relational victimization. Children were individually given access to a gymnasium with physical activity equipment and sedentary alternatives for 30 minutes. Children could play with the equipment in any pattern they wished and the amount of time allocated to sedentary activities (sitting time) was recorded. Overt and relational victimization were moderately and positively associated with BMI percentile (r ≥ 0.40, p ≤ 0.04) and sitting time (r ≥ 0.40, p ≤ 0.05) and sitting time was positively associated with BMI percentile (r = 0.4, p = 0.05). After controlling for overt and relational victimization the correlation between sitting time and BMI percentile was non-significant (r ≤ 0.28, p ≥ 0.18). The positive relationship between BMI percentile and sedentary behavior was mediated by measures of negative social interaction.

Functional Traits Explain Variation In Chaparral Shrub Sensitivity To Altered Water And Nutrient Availability, Reina L. Nielsen, Jeremy J. James, Rebecca E. Drenovsky
2019 Faculty Bibliography
Worldwide drylands are threatened by changes in resource availability associated with global environmental change. Functional traits may help predict which species will be most responsive to these alterations in nutrient and water availability. Current functional trait work focuses on tissue construction and nutrient concentrations, but plant performance in low resource environments also may be strongly influenced by traits related to nutrient budgets and allocation. Our overall objective was to compare trait responses in a suite of serpentine and nonserpentine congener pairs from the California chaparral, a biodiverse region facing nutrient deposition and future changes in precipitation. In a common garden …

Fad2 Gene Radiation And Positive Selection Contributed To Polyacetylene Metabolism Evolution In Campanulids1[Open], Tao Feng, Ya Yang, Lucas Busta, Edgar B. Cahoon, Hengchang Wang, Shiyou Lü
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Polyacetylenes (PAs) are bioactive, specialized plant defense compounds produced by some species in the eudicot clade campanulids. Early steps of PA biosynthesis are catalyzed by Fatty Acid Desaturase 2 (FAD2). Canonical FAD2s catalyze desaturation, but divergent forms can catalyze hydroxylation, conjugation, acetylenation, and epoxygenation. These alternate reactions give rise to valuable unusual fatty acids, including the precursors to PAs. The extreme functional diversity of FAD2 enzymes and the origin of PA biosynthesis are poorly understood from an evolutionary perspective. We focus here on the evolution of the FAD2 gene family. We uncovered a core eudicot-wide gene duplication event giving rise …

Video Education: A Quality Improvement Project For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes, Brandon Lipscomb
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
Abstract
Background: Quality diabetes education is a key to successful diabetes treatment. Factors that hinder quality diabetes education include: allotted time for appointments, provider-patient communication, inter-personal relationship between provider and patient, and patient’s educational level. Locally speaking, the Central Virginia area has a higher rate of diabetes then compared to the average rate of diabetes in the State of Virginia. To complicate this more, the local area has a higher percentage of poverty when compared to the average poverty level of the state. Combining these two characteristics places these individuals at a higher risk for disease complications and expresses a …

Improving Hepatitis C Screenings In The 1945 To 1965 Birth Cohort In Outpatient Primary Care, Betina Muse Nakoda
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a silent epidemic affecting a vulnerable patient population in our society. Among those considered high risk for having HCV are those individuals born between 1945 and 1965, termed the baby boomer population. Baby boomers are five times more likely to have and suffer mortality from HCV than any other patient population (CDC, 2018). HCV may not present with signs or symptoms until 20 to 30 years post contraction of the virus (CDC, 2018). In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its recommendations for Hepatitis C screenings to include the baby …

Methods For Managing Human–Deer Conflicts In Urban, Suburban, And Exurban Areas, Geoff D. Westerfield, Justin M. Shannon, Orrin V. Duvuvuei, Thomas A. Decker, Nathan P. Snow, Erin D. Shank, Brian F. Wakeling, H. Bryant White
Human–Wildlife Interactions Monographs
This monograph identifies challenges and benefits associated with many human–deer conflict mitigation actions as well as methods to monitor the response of deer populations to management actions. Deer exploit urban, suburban, and exurban areas where human populations provide anthropogenic attractants, either intentionally or inadvertently, which often leads to human–deer conflicts. Mitigating actions have varying degrees of efficacy and may not be effective or accepted in every situation. Wildlife and municipal managers must work together to seek methods to reduce attractants, mitigate conflicts, and perpetuate the conservation of wildlife species that adds to the appreciation of nature in our lives.
