Endophytic Activity Of Beauveria Bassiana In Tomato And Its Efficacy Against Red Spider Mites (Tetranychus Evansi, Caroline Anaye Omukoko
All PhD Dissertations
The tomato red spider mite, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard, is an important pest of tomatoes in Kenya. Acaricides commonly used in excessive amounts by farmers have led to cases of resistance as well as widespread residues in the food chain and the larger environment. There is need to seek alternative control measures such as the use of endophytes. In this study, laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out to screen for Beauveria bassiana isolates that could establish as endophytes in tomato varieties and control red spider mites. Five Beauveria bassiana isolates (ICIPE 10, ICIPE 35, ICIPE 273, ICIPE 279 …
Combination Of 'Push-Pull' And Netting Technology For Management Of Cowpea Pests (Megalurothrips Sjostedti Trybom And Aphis Craccivora Koch) In Kenya, Diabate Seydou
All PhD Dissertations
Vegetable production is increasing in order to feed the growing urban populations in subSaharan Africa. Net houses are one possible solution to increase the quality and yield of cowpea, an important leafy vegetable, and to reduce the use of pesticides. This study tested the hypothesis that net houses do not protect cowpea against the Black Legume Aphid,Aphis craccivora or Bean Flower Thrips, Megalurothrips sjostedti, two small but major cowpea pests. Thus, a possibility to supplement the physical barrier with repellent volatiles to prevent these pests from getting through the netting was examined. Two sources of repellent volatiles were investigated thus, …

No. 37: Validation Of The Hcp Survey Tool For Measuring Urban Food Insecurity: An Item Response Theory Approach, Vonai Charamba, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe
Hungry Cities Partnership
There is some controversy on the applicability of the summand-based Household Food Security Assessment Score (HFIAS) and Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) as measures of food insecurity in urban areas in the Global South. These measures were primarily designed for measurement in rural communities where food insecurity itself was first identified and is still predominantly conceptualized. The objective of the research reported in this paper is to assess the internal and external validity of the HFIAS and the HDDS in determining food insecurity levels in an urban context, using HCP data for urban households in Windhoek, Namibia. Validation was performed …
A Study Of Effective Professional Development For Teaching Elementary Mathematics In Majority Economically Disadvantaged Schools, Cory Concus
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative study focused on mathematical professional development for high-poverty elementary schools in Tennessee. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in teacher perspective regarding three research-based categories: teacher preparation, teacher beliefs, and instructional practices. Each of the categories was viewed through teachers years of experience, school achievement, and school poverty level. For the purposes of this study, school poverty level was partitioned into three groups. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in teacher beliefs and instructional practices between the second and third highest poverty levels.

Anti-Hypochlorite And Catalytic Activity Of Commercially Available Moringa Oleifera Diet Supplement, Karolina Starzak, Bernadette Creaven, Arkadiusz Matwijczuk, Alicja Matwijczuk, Dariusz Karcz
Articles
Aiming at the assessment of the pro-health, and especially anti-hypochlorite properties of Moringa oleifera species a representative, commercially available Moringaoleifera dietary supplement was used as a substrate for the preparation of aqueous Moringa extract. The anti-hypochlorite activity of the extract was assessed using the hypochlorite-specific coumarin-based fluorescence turn-off sensor, namely 7-diethylamino-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA). This compound was synthesized via the Knoevenagel condensation of 4-diethylamino-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde with Meldrum’sacidandtheMoringaextractwasemployedasamediumandcatalyst. Moreover, thetotal phenoliccontent(TPC)aswellasthereactiveoxygenspecies(ROS)–scavengingabilityoftheaqueous Moringa extract were determined. The results obtained demonstrated the applicability of Moringa extract as an anti-hypochlorite agent. Additionally, the satisfactory yield of the 7-DCCA obtained suggests the usefulness of the extract as a …

Identifying Drivers Of Genetically Modified Seafood Demand: Evidence From A Choice Experiment, Michael J. Weir, Thomas W. Sproul
Identifying Drivers Of Genetically Modified Seafood Demand: Evidence From A Choice Experiment, Michael J. Weir, Thomas W. Sproul
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications
The aquaculture industry has expanded to fill the gap between plateauing wild seafood supply and growing consumer seafood demand. The use of genetic modification (GM) technology has been proposed to address sustainability concerns associated with current aquaculture practices, but GM seafood has proved controversial among both industry stakeholders and producers, especially with forthcoming GM disclosure requirements for food products in the United States. We conduct a choice experiment eliciting willingness-to-pay for salmon fillets with varying characteristics, including GM technology and GM feed. We then develop a predictive model of consumer choice using LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator)-regularization applied …

Ethnicity And The Recognition Of Asian Surnames Through Trademark Filings, Russell W. Jacobs
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
This Article presents the results of a study using U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) trademark application records to determine the rates of recognition of surnames held by people belonging to six Asian ethnic groups—Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. This study follows upon an earlier study that examined a broader dataset of ethnic designations set forth in the 2000 U.S. Census, looking at not just Asian or Pacific Islander names, but also Black, Hispanic, Native American or Alaska Native, and White names. That study looked at the intersection of two sources of data—surnames recorded in the 2000 U.S. …
Pheromone And Population Genetics Analyses Of Clavigralla Species In Africa, Hilaire Kpongbe
Pheromone And Population Genetics Analyses Of Clavigralla Species In Africa, Hilaire Kpongbe
All PhD Dissertations
Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.)) are major sources of protein for human and animal consumption. Production of these crops is hampered by insect pests, especially the complex of brown spiny bugs of the genus Clavigralla (Hemiptera: Coreidae) which causes yield loss of up to 100% in various parts of Africa. The current practice of pesticide application to control these species is not efficient and has negative impacts on human health and the environment. These species are widely distributed in Africa and has a wide range of host plants, suggesting variability in genetics and chemical …

The Genetics Of Vein Of Galen Malformation And Assessment Of Candidate Genes In Xenopus Tropicalis, Jonathan Read Gaillard
The Genetics Of Vein Of Galen Malformation And Assessment Of Candidate Genes In Xenopus Tropicalis, Jonathan Read Gaillard
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM) is a specific subtype of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that becomes evident in weeks 6-11 of embryonic development. VOGM comprise less than 1% of all vascular malformations, yet represent 30% of all pediatric intracranial vascular malformations. Depending on their specific characteristics, i.e. its feeding vessels, it can present clinically as devastating congestive heart failure in neonates, hydrocephalus in children, or seizures and headaches in young adults. Advances in treatment provide improved survival, primarily through endovascular surgery. The genetic and molecular etiology of VOGM remains relatively unknown, with the only associated genes being in the context …

Home Visits In Internal Medicine Graduate Medical Education, Amitte Rosenfeld
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Home-based care training is largely absent from internal medicine (IM) graduate medical education, and home-based care program evaluation largely focuses on resident attitudes and satisfaction, rather than impact on practice or the patient experience. In the 2015-16 academic year, the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine residency program (YPC) incorporated required home visits for all PGY-1s and PGY-2s. These visits are intended to build unique clinical skillsets, enhance education about the role of psychosocial determinants of health, and potentially impact resident wellbeing. A qualitative method was used to evaluate this program with the goal of characterizing the impact of one-time home …

Apopo Annual Report 2019, Apopo
Global CWD Repository
APOPO originated from the idea of its founder Bart Weetjens to trains rats for the detection of landmines. Now, over 20 years later, APOPO deploys rats to find landmines and tuberculosis in many affected countries, and continues innovating to use its African Giant Pouched Rats in the battle against other scourges.
APOPO trains these ‘HeroRATs’ using positive reinforcement – they receive tasty treats when they identify a target scent. HeroRATs are at the core of the organization and it’s reflected in the way they are protected and responsibly raised.

Naktide Targeted To Adipocytes Ameliorates Western Diet Induced Obesity, Rebecca D. Pratt
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic and is a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome. It is believed that cellular oxidant stress plays a key role in both the development and maintenance of obesity as well as its associated comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We have previously reported that systemic administration of pNaKtide, which targets the Na/K-ATPase oxidant amplification loop was able to decrease oxidative stress and adiposity in mice fed a high fat and fructose supplemented western diet (WD). As adipocytes are believed to play an active role in the development of obesity and …
