Impact Of Art Education On Student Development And Achievement, Shanna Marie Slice
Impact Of Art Education On Student Development And Achievement, Shanna Marie Slice
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The significance of art education as a part of public education in America has been greatly debated since public education’s inception. While the most recently passed education bill includes art as a part of a well-rounded education, there is a simultaneous shift in focus towards standardized test scores. This raises several questions around art education’s impact not only on standardized test scores but on the academic and personal development of students. The current relevant research shows compelling evidence that art education does positively impact critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving skills. However, there is inconclusive evidence whether art education positively …
The Castrated Gods And Their Castration Cults: Revenge, Punishment, And Spiritual Supremacy, Jenny Wade
The Castrated Gods And Their Castration Cults: Revenge, Punishment, And Spiritual Supremacy, Jenny Wade
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Voluntary castration has existed as a religious practice up to the present day, openly in India and secretively in other parts of the world. Gods in a number of different cultures were castrated, a mutilation that paradoxically tended to increase rather than diminish their powers. This cross-cultural examination of the eunuch gods examines the meaning associated with divine emasculation in Egypt, Asia Minor, Greece, the Roman Empire, India, and northern Europe to the degree that these meanings can be read from the wording of myths, early accounts, and the castration cults for some of these gods. Three distinct patterns of …
The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Regular vinegar and apple cider vinegar have historically been used as home remedies to cure illness and diseases; however, not enough empirical research has been done to substantiate these assertions. This thesis will discuss the different ways that various vinegar forms affect one’s body metabolism, and the effect that they have on infectious diseases. This is an important topic to examine because of the growing number of infectious diseases. Vinegar contains polyphenols, which display antioxidant qualities in the body. Polyphenols found in the acetic acid of vinegar also inhibit microbial growth. This microbial growth is usually controlled by antimicrobials; however …
Social Behavior Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) And The Expression Of The Stress Hormone Cortisol, Vanessa Finazzo
Social Behavior Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) And The Expression Of The Stress Hormone Cortisol, Vanessa Finazzo
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Zebrafish are often used in studies involving social behavior because they readily form shoals. A shoal is any group of fish congregating together for social reasons. Zebrafish form shoals because of the many benefits these social groups provide such as defense against predators and improved foraging success. Because the zebrafish is an animal that exists in a large social grouping, it provides an interesting perspective on understanding the influences of stress on social behavior. Using zebrafish as a model, this thesis aims to determine how specific social situations are affected by and affect stress and associated cortisol levels. In order …

The Behavioral Effects Of Riluzole On Memory, Coordination, And Stereotypy In Cd-1 Mice, Janine Gelles
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
ALS one of the most common fatal neurodegenerative diseases to date among the adult population. Symptoms of ALS lead to the atrophy neuromuscular junctions, deterioration of upper and lower motor neurons in the nervous system, neuronal death, and eventually respiratory failure. Main genes discussed that are known to lead to ALS when mutated or disrupted include SOD-1, TARDBP, FUS, C9orf72. Glutamate excitotoxicity has also been linked to overstimulation of neurotransmitters in the brain causing complications that result in ALS. There are only two FDA approved drugs in the U.S. to treat symptoms ALS, one of them being the drug Riluzole. …

Background
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has recently set the ambitious “90-90-90 target” of having 90% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) know their status, receive antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achieve viral suppression by 2020. This ambitious new goal is occurring in a context of global “scale-down” following nearly a decade of heightened investment in HIV prevention and treatment efforts. Arguably international goals spur action, however, setting unrealistic goals that do not take weak health systems and variations in the nature of the epidemic across countries into consideration may set them up for failure in unproductive ways …

Adipocyte functionality, including adipocyte differentiation and adipokine secretion, is essential in obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. Here, we provide evidence that Ca2+ influx in primary adipocytes, especially upon store-depletion, plays an important role in adipocyte differentiation, functionality, and subsequently metabolic regulation. The endogenous Ca2+ entry channel in both subcutaneous and visceral adipocytes was dependent on TRPC1-STIM1 and blocking Ca2+ entry with SKF-96365 or TRPC1-/- derived adipocytes inhibited adipocyte differentiation. Additionally, TRPC1-/- mice have decreased organ weight, but increased adipose deposition and reduced serum adiponectin and leptin concentrations, without affecting total adipokine expression. Mechanistically, TRPC1- mediated Ca2+ entry regulated SNARE complex formation and …

The Impact Of Planned Purposeful Movement On Student Achievement In English Language Arts, Molly J. Dibble
The Impact Of Planned Purposeful Movement On Student Achievement In English Language Arts, Molly J. Dibble
Education Dissertations and Projects
Ongoing research has pointed to the human brain’s need for movement, yet the average student spends the majority of the school day sitting. Research links brain-based learning with improved student achievement. The intent of this study was to answer two questions: What is the impact of including planned purposeful movement in English language arts instruction on student achievement while using a district-mandated, scripted curriculum; and does planning for the inclusion of movement strategies in lesson plans impact the use of movement strategies in instruction? In this mixed methods study, qualitative data from teacher interviews were collected and merged with quantitative …

Spatial variation in landscape composition can influence phenotypic expression in wildlife species and can improve management efforts to express certain phenotypic traits. We evaluated the influence of age, landscape composition, and physiographic province on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) antler characteristics using data from 16,622 male deer (age range: 1.5–3.5+ years old) harvested between 1997–2016 across five physiographic provinces in Georgia. Age and physiographic province influenced antler size index (ASI; P < 0.001). ASI of yearling males was greatest (- x = 53.37; SE = 0.39) in the Upper Coastal Plain and least (- x = 46.23; SE = 0.51) in the Lower Coastal Plain physiographic province. Given the differences in ASI among physiographic provinces, we evaluated how landscape composition within each physiographic province influenced ASI of 7,325 yearling (1.5-year-old) males. Yearling ASI was positively related to increasing coverage of cultivated crops and suburban-urban areas (e.g., parks, small housing developments). Conversely, evergreen and deciduous forested cover consistently had a negative effect on ASI, except in the Ridge and Valley physiographic province where evergreen was positively related to ASI. Wildlife managers and hunters should recognize the effects of age, landscape composition, and physiographic province when setting antler size expectations.

Background
Fatigue is a complex phenomenon that has effects on physical characteristics, cognition, behaviours, and physical and mental health. Paramedicine crosses the boundaries of many high-risk industries, namely medicine, transport and aviation. The effects of fatigue on paramedics thus need to be explored and considered in order to begin to identify appropriate interventions and management strategies.
Aim
The aim of this article was to provide an overview of fatigue in paramedics and its potential effects on various areas of practice and provider health, and to outline potential solutions to assess and manage the risk of fatigue in paramedics as suggested …

Play-Based Learning In Western Australian Schools: Contributing To The Process From Policy To Practice, Dee O'Connor, Christine Robinson, Tracy Treasure, Linda Cranley, Samantha Wynne
Education Conference Papers
The role of play within Western Australian (WA) schools has been the subject of much debate since the publication, in 2016, of The Early Childhood Australia (ECA) Discussion Paper which called for a WA Play Strategy in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). The Discussion Paper was the result of a 2013 consultation of ECA’s WA based members. The members identified a noteworthy limitation to the opportunities that young children in WA have to play and that these opportunities are diminishing. Other significant organisations active within ECEC policy and practice in WA, including family, child and educator representation groups, publically …
