Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In Florida: Food For Thought, Lawrence R. Parsons Jan 2019

Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In Florida: Food For Thought, Lawrence R. Parsons

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Florida has successfully irrigated agricultural crops with reclaimed water (RW) for more than 50 years. Florida and California are the two largest producers and users of RW in the U.S. To allay early fears about RW, Florida regulatory agencies established rules in the 1980s that prohibited direct contact of RW with crops that are not processed but eaten raw. This means that RW cannot be used for direct contact irrigation or frost protection of crops such as strawberries or blueberries. Other states do not have such limitations on RW use. Reclaimed water has an excellent safety record, and no health …

Food Security As A Water Grand Challenge, Courage Bangira Jan 2019

Food Security As A Water Grand Challenge, Courage Bangira

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Perhaps the biggest challenge the world faces is providing sufficient, nutritious, and safe food at the right time for its ever-increasing population. Considering current world population growth trends, it is estimated that the global population will be about 10 billion by the year 2050. Therefore, food production should at least double in the same period if food security is to be satisfied. Water and land resources play a pivotal role in agriculture and directly connect to food security. At the same time, the capacity to produce food is constrained by global climate changes and increased pressure on land resources. These …

Effects Of Type I Diabetes On Labor Force Participation: A Propensity Score Match, Ore Aina-Badejo Jan 2019

Effects Of Type I Diabetes On Labor Force Participation: A Propensity Score Match, Ore Aina-Badejo

Theses and Dissertations

Type I Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune mediated form of insulin resistance that has lasting socioeconomic effects from childhood through old age that may impact labor force participation. Examining this relationship will enhance our understanding of life-long chronic illness beyond individual medical/financial impact by establishing broader socioeconomic implications. This study utilized data from the 2008-2015 data set of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), to explore the effects of T1D on labor force participation. It was hypothesized that having T1D would decrease both employability and contribution to the labor force. Utilizing methods of propensity score matching and entropy balancing, …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

INTRODUCTION: The potential value of preconception care and interconception care is increasingly acknowledged, but delivery is generally uncommon. Reaching women for interconception care is potentially easier than for preconception care, however the concept is still unfamiliar. Expert consensus could facilitate guidelines, policies and subsequent implementation. A national and subsequent international expert meeting were organized to discuss the term, definition, content, relevant target groups, and ways to reach target groups for interconception care. METHODS: We performed a literature study to develop propositions for discussion in a national expert meeting in the Netherlands in October 2015. The outcomes of this meeting were …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Child Mortality: Evidence From Pakistan Demographic And Health Survey, Rana Ejaz Ali Khan, Khadija Malik Bari, Muhammad Ali Raza Jan 2019

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Child Mortality: Evidence From Pakistan Demographic And Health Survey, Rana Ejaz Ali Khan, Khadija Malik Bari, Muhammad Ali Raza

Business Review

This paper attempts to highlight socioeconomic determinants of child mortality in Pakistan. Binary logistic regression is applied to 7297 observations from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2012-13. The results reveal that probability of child mortality decreases with greater birth-interval, child’s large size at birth, more family members, mother’s education, mother’s ownership of assets and mother’s decision-making at the household level. Policy makers can work to improve mothers’ characteristics such as fertility behavior, education, empowerment and decision-making at the household level, to reduce child mortality.

Are Consumers Willing To Pay To Reduce Food Waste?, Kara Grant, R. Karina Gallardo, Jill J. Mccluskey

Faculty Publications - College of Business

In this article, we assess consumer willingness to pay for foods prepared using a new food-processing technology, a pasteurization process based on microwave treatments called Microwave Assisted Pasteurization Systems (MAPS), which can improve the appearance, texture, and flavor of ready-to-eat meals and extend shelf life compared to other equivalent processing technologies (Tang, 2015). We also examine whether there are linkages between stated shelf life dates and estimated premeditated food waste for the different ingredients used in the choice experiment. We collected data using an online survey via Qualtrics in which we asked questions about premeditated food waste according to different …

Poverty, Opportunity, And Well-Being In The United States, Nate D. Peach, Emily J. Mavrakis Jan 2019

Poverty, Opportunity, And Well-Being In The United States, Nate D. Peach, Emily J. Mavrakis

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Economic opportunity varies dramatically across the United States. In this study the Opportunity to Flourish Index (OFI) is created to determine the level of opportunity United States cities afford those at the bottom of the income distribution. Indicators within the index measure disposable income, access to financial services, diet, educational attainment, unemployment, physical well-being, and family structure. The OFI’s relationship with standard measures of economic growth and economic mobility is also evaluated. The OFI is not correlated with measures of income and population growth, suggesting, that in the short-run growth and opportunity are not necessarily complementary. The OFI is strongly …

Engineering Injectable, Self-Assembling 3d Vasculature, Kendyl Cohn

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Our laboratory (The Heylman Lab) is developing strategies for engineering tissue outside of the body. All tissues in the body receive nutrients and remove waste via an intricate network of blood vessels called the circulatory system. Like native tissues, all engineered tissues require this blood vessel transport system to properly mimic the in vivo tissue environment. Therefore, the aim of this project is to grow three-dimensional networks of blood vessels in vitro. These vessel networks will provide the foundation for tissue-on-a-chip systems when embedded in microfluidic chips being developed by other members of the lab. The scope of this project …

Effect Of Prolonged Probiotic Supplementation In A High-Fructose Diet In A Pig Model Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Victoria Smith, Meghan Melnyk Jan 2019

Effect Of Prolonged Probiotic Supplementation In A High-Fructose Diet In A Pig Model Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Victoria Smith, Meghan Melnyk

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of pediatric chronic liver condition, caused by hepatic inflammation, insulin resistance and steatosis. We hypothesize that prolonged intake of diets rich in carbohydrates, specifically fructose, will induce NAFLD in infants, whereas probiotics may ameliorate the symptoms of the disease. To assess the effect of dietary fructose and probiotics in the pathology of the disease, 24 leptin resistant neonate pigs will be assigned to 1 of 4 treatment diets for 10 weeks: 1) control (CON), 2) high fructose (HF), 3) CON + probiotics, 4) HF + probiotics. Animals will be fed 40 …

These are ones that could provide renewed focus towards the community’s wellness, sustainability, governance, and education.

The Influence Of Ambient Scent Temperature On Food Consumption Behavior, Sarah Lefebvre, Dipayan Biswas Jan 2019

The Influence Of Ambient Scent Temperature On Food Consumption Behavior, Sarah Lefebvre, Dipayan Biswas

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This research examines the impact of ambient odor on food consumption. The results of a field experiment and five lab experiments show that the presence of a warm ambient odor (e.g., cedarwood) versus a cool ambient odor (e.g., eucalyptus) reduces the amount of calories consumed and also leads to increased choice of lower-calorie food options. This is due to established implicit associations formed from the human body’s innate physiological response to changes in ambient temperature. Specifically, exposure to a warm (vs. cool) ambient odor, influences perceived ambient temperature, which in turn alters food consumption behaviors. The results of this research …

Inclusion Body Myositis In A Middle-Aged Woman With Knee Pain And Weakness: A Case Report, Jacob Christensen, Christopher A. Mcgrew

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Weakness and osteoarthritis are common concerns for orthopaedic and primary care physicians when caring for aging adults. We describe a 58-year-old woman with a history of Sjogren syndrome and knee osteoarthritis. She presented to our clinic for injection of viscosupplementation in her left knee, and review of her medical records revealed right hand weakness at 7 years after the onset of symptoms. Findings of muscle biopsy and multiple electromyograms revealed inclusion body myositis, primarily affecting the deep finger flexors and quadriceps muscles. On the basis of this diagnosis, physical therapy and supportive care were recommended. The results of the current …
