The Politics, Economies, And Ecologies Of Indonesia’S Third Generation Of Social Forestry: An Introduction To The Special Section, Micah R. Fisher, Ahmad Dhiaulhaq, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide

Forest and Society

Although Indonesia is experiencing one of the most complex transformations of social forestry policy in the world, there is a need to step back and more closely examine the politics, ecologies, and economies that provide context for its implementation. This introduction offers a synthesis of the collection of special section submissions in Forest and Society. We begin by navigating the current social forestry moment by presenting a heuristic for identifying the discourses underpinning the rapid expansion in support of social forestry schemes. These perspectives are fragmented across four continuously contested discourses: community-first, legal-first, conservation-first, and development-first. We then contextualize the …

What Is Success? Gaps And Trade-Offs In Assessing The Performance Of Traditional Social Forestry Systems In Indonesia, Indah Waty Bong, Moira Moeliono, Grace Yee Wong, Maria Brockhaus

Forest and Society

Despite the growing interest in social forestry (SF), how much do we understand the social, economic and environmental outcomes and the conditions that enable SF to perform? In this article, we use a content analysis of literature on existing traditional SF practiced throughout Indonesia. It examines the outcomes of these systems and the conditions that enabled or hindered these outcomes to understand possible causal relations and changing dynamics between these conditions and SF performance. We discuss the gaps in how SF is assessed and understood in the literature to understand the important aspects of traditional SF that are not captured …

2018 Long-Term Summary Of Kentucky Forage Variety Trials, Gene L. Olson, S. Ray Smith, Jimmy C. Henning, Christopher D. Teutsch

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Forage crops occupy approximately 7 million acres in Kentucky. Forages provide a majority of the nutrition for beef, dairy, horse, goat, sheep, and wildlife in the state. In addition, forage crops play an environmentally friendly role in soil conservation, water quality, and air quality. There are over 60 forage species adapted to the climate and soil conditions of Kentucky. Only 10 to 12 of these species occupy the majority of the acreage, but within these species there is a tremendous variation in varieties.

This publication was developed to provide a user-friendly guide to choosing the best variety for producers based …

Association Of Dietary Intake With Suicidal Ideation Or Suicide Attempts In Adolescents, Zenobia J. Bryant Jan 2019

Association Of Dietary Intake With Suicidal Ideation Or Suicide Attempts In Adolescents, Zenobia J. Bryant

2019 Program & Posters

Suicide is among the leading causes of adolescent deaths worldwide and thus a significant public health concern. This cross-sectional study examined the interaction between fruit and vegetable intake and suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. Suicidal ideation and suicide attempt were significantly, positively correlated with fruit and vegetable intake even after controlling for age, sex, race, and depression. Legislators, educators, parents, and other stakeholders can use the knowledge from this study for guidance and direction in creating policies that can positively influence the mental health of adolescents.

The Effect Of Depression On Obesity Versus All-Cause Mortality, Srikanta Banerjee Jan 2019

The Effect Of Depression On Obesity Versus All-Cause Mortality, Srikanta Banerjee

2019 Program & Posters

Obesity is known to be associated with poor health in the general population. Mental illness is also known to cause disability and mortality. In this prospective analysis, we found a higher level of obesity-related mortality among individuals with depression. Social policy should be aimed at treating the mental–physical illness connection.

Hazardous Waste Site Proximity And Type 2 Diabetes: From Youths To Adults, Theresa Ann Johnson Jan 2019

Hazardous Waste Site Proximity And Type 2 Diabetes: From Youths To Adults, Theresa Ann Johnson

2019 Program & Posters

Human exposure to environmental toxins has been correlated with diabetes. To examine the relationship between remote exposure to hazardous waste sites (HWS) and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the National Priorities List of Superfund sites were analyzed. The results support obesity and advanced age as risk factors for T2DM and suggest that non- Hispanic Whites residing farther from a HWS had a reduced risk for T2DM. The social change contribution is in supporting environmental health assessments in clinical practice and influencing dialogue about social justice and the distribution of HWS.

Rationale/Objective: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) health survey has been used to describe the epidemiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the US. Through addressing respiratory symptoms and tobacco use, it could also be used to characterize COPD risk. Methods: Four US states added questions to the 2015 BRFSS regarding productive cough, shortness of breath, dyspnea on exertion, and tobacco duration. We determined COPD risk categories: provider-diagnosed COPD as self-report, high-risk for COPD as ≥ 10 years tobacco smoking and at least one significant respiratory symptom, and low risk was neither diagnosed COPD nor high risk. Disease …

Schrader, T. Gibson Gaylord, Matthew E. Mcentire

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Given tilapia grown in the biofloc technology production system can consume the biofloc, it should be possible to optimize formulated diet protein content to account for nutrition derived from consuming biofloc. The present study, conducted in an outdoor biofloc technology production system, evaluated impacts on fish production indices, common microbial off-flavors, and water quality dynamics for hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis aureus×O. niloticus) fed diets formulated to contain 22.5%, 27.7%, and 32.3% digestible protein (DP) and 6% lipid. Fingerlings (32.2 ± 10.1 g/fish) were stocked in tanks (18.6m2; 16.6m3) in May 2016 at 25/m2 (29/m3) and grown for 5 months to market …

Decades Of Native Bee Biodiversity Surveys At Pinnacles National Park Highlight The Importance Of Monitoring Natural Areas Over Time, Joan M. Meiners, Terry L. Griswold, Olivia Messinger Carril

All PIRU Publications

Thousands of species of bees are in global decline, yet research addressing the ecology and status of these wild pollinators lags far behind work being done to address similar impacts on the managed honey bee. This knowledge gap is especially glaring in natural areas, despite knowledge that protected habitats harbor and export diverse bee communities into nearby croplands where their pollination services have been valued at over $3 billion per year. Surrounded by ranches and farmlands, Pinnacles National Park in the Inner South Coast Range of California contains intact Mediterranean chaparral shrubland. This habitat type is among the most valuable …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: Few interventions have shown efficacy to influence key energy balance behaviors during the preschool years.

OBJECTIVE: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was used to evaluate the efficacy of Food, Fun, and Families (FFF), a 12 week authoritative food parenting intervention for mothers with low-income levels, to reduce preschool-aged children's intake of calories from solid fat and added sugar (SoFAS).

METHODS: Mothers were randomly assigned to receive FFF (n = 59) or to a delayed treatment control (n = 60). The primary outcome was children's daily energy intake from SoFAS at the end of the 12 week intervention, controlling for …

The Agricultural Deities Of Q ’Eqchi’ Mayas, Tzuultaq’As: Agricultural Rituals As Historical Obligation And Avatar Of The Cultural Reservoir In Rural Lanquín , Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, Yishan Lea

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

This study, based on fieldwork in rural Lanquín, Guatemala, discusses cultural continuity and the sense of historicity through agricultural rituals and worship of the agricultural deity Tzuultaq’as. The place, Lanquín, and the Q’eqchi’ Maya peasant farmers are situated within a two-fold tension and contradiction. Geographically remote in relation to the economic centers in Guatemala, and marginal in infrastructural development, while their cash crop harvests never fail to be effected by the fluctuations of the global market. From the eclectic stance merging both theories of cultural essentialism and constructivism, by juxtaposing the emblematic event of the anti-Monsanto Law movement in 2014 …

Introduction A wide range of water-related problems contribute to the global burden of disease. Despite the many plausible consequences for health and well-being, there is no validated tool to measure individual- or household-level water insecurity equivalently across varying cultural and ecological settings. Accordingly, we are developing the Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale to measure household-level water insecurity in multiple contexts.

Methods and analysis After domain specification and item development, items were assessed for both content and face validity. Retained items are being asked in surveys in 28 sites globally in which waterrelated problems have been reported (eg, shortages, excess …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Due to the limited evidence of the cost-effectiveness of Community Health Workers (CHW) delivering treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), there is a need to better understand the costs incurred by both implementing institutions and beneficiary households. This study assessed the costs and cost-effectiveness of treatment for cases of SAM without complications delivered by government-employed Lady Health Workers (LHWs) and complemented with non-governmental organisation (NGO) delivered outpatient facility-based care compared with NGO delivered outpatient facility-based care only alongside a two-arm randomised controlled trial conducted in Sindh Province, Pakistan.
Methods: An activity-based cost model was used, employing a societal perspective …
