Toxicological Life Cycle Impact Analysis Of Short And Long Chain Perfluorinated Compounds Compared To Impacts Of Treatment Techniques, Joshua R. Glass
Toxicological Life Cycle Impact Analysis Of Short And Long Chain Perfluorinated Compounds Compared To Impacts Of Treatment Techniques, Joshua R. Glass
Theses and Dissertations
Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made substances that are used as surfactants in industrial processes and commercial products most notably for the Air Force in aqueous film-forming foam. These compounds were introduced in the 1950s and have since become pervasive throughout industrial and consumer products such as carpet, leather, and paper as well as textiles that repel water, grease, and oils. As the presence of PFAS continues to grow, so do concerns for the toxicological impacts of exposure to these chemicals. Although there is much research into the toxicological impacts of PFAS, there are no regulatory treatment levels within the United …

Quality Of Hispanic Oral Health In The U.S.: Perceptions Of Dentists And A Call For Improvement, Mitchell Merrill
Undergraduate Honors Theses
An examination of the perceptions of U.S. dentist’s regarding the quality of Hispanic oral health in the United States. This thesis investigates both the dentist’s potential for making positive change and the challenges that stand in the way of improving the state of Hispanic oral health. Twelve dentists were spoken with by phone to discuss three main questions. Those chosen for the calls practice in the ten states with the highest percentage of Hispanics. An analysis was conducted of the recorded calls that consisted of comparing each response with patient demographics, practice location and years of experience. Responses were categorized …

Biochemical And Proteomic Approaches To Determine The Impact Level Of Each Step Of The Supply Chain On Tomato Fruit Quality, Robert T. Madden
Biochemical And Proteomic Approaches To Determine The Impact Level Of Each Step Of The Supply Chain On Tomato Fruit Quality, Robert T. Madden
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fresh fruits and vegetables (FFVs) are the most frequently wasted foods because of their perishability and handling requirements. However, there is a lack of information on how much each step of the supply chain impacts FFVs quality, particularly on tomatoes, and what measures need to be taken for an immediate and effective impact on waste reduction. There is also no information on how the supply chain affects the proteome of the tomato and what proteins are differentially regulated by the most impactful steps of the supply chain. The objectives of the work presented on this thesis were to evaluate the …
Hiv/Aids Awareness Among First Year Nursing Students In Four Nursing Schools In Guyana, Tabitha Mallampati
Hiv/Aids Awareness Among First Year Nursing Students In Four Nursing Schools In Guyana, Tabitha Mallampati
DNP and Student Works
In Guyana, many adolescents grow up in broken families and live in an environment where violence is pervasive. Inadequate knowledge about safe sex practices, poor attitudes towards sexual health and poverty are further contributing factors for high risk behavior among adolescents. As a result, teenage pregnancy and exposure to sexually transmitted infections are often high in Guyana. This study examined the knowledge towards transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS among first year nursing students in four different Nursing Schools in Guyana. This study also examined misconceptions regarding HIV/AIDS among the sample group. This study used a quantitative, descriptive and correlation design.

LSU Master's Theses
A collection of poems and nonfiction vignettes, naus entails a navigation of my experience with Tourette Syndrome and, consequently, what it can mean to have a noisy body. Rather than situate noise as a negatively construed iteration of sound, I contend that, following the work of Michel Serres, it is instead a disruption within a system, a parasitical interception, an affective force that has the potential to alter the positions and orientations of a given constellation of bodies, human or otherwise. Similar to how sound, as a verb, can be understood as “to fathom” or “to make sense of,” naus …

Estimating Sex Using The Human Mandibular Canine, Brittney Blevins
LSU Master's Theses
Sexual dimorphism can be quantified in human mandibular canines; therefore, these teeth can be used to estimate sex of skeletonized individuals. This study complements and expands previous research by comparing mesiodistal diameter (MD), buccolingual diameter (BL), and crown area of human mandibular canines. Measurements were taken from a sample of skeletal individuals from the Terry Collection (n=677), the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology Skeletal Collection (n=86), and a random sample of dental casts from the James K. Economides Orthodontic Case File (JKE, n=624), for a total study sample of 741 males and 677 females. Both left and right canines were measured, …

Close proximities between organelles have been described for decades. However, only recently a specific field dealing with organelle communication at membrane contact sites has gained wide acceptance, attracting scientists from multiple areas of cell biology. The diversity of approaches warrants a unified vocabulary for the field. Such definitions would facilitate laying the foundations of this field, streamlining communication and resolving semantic controversies. This opinion, written by a panel of experts in the field, aims to provide this burgeoning area with guidelines for the experimental definition and analysis of contact sites. It also includes suggestions on how to operationally and tractably …

The Effects Of Highlighting Healthy Options On Consumer Food Choices In A Food Bank Setting, Kaitlin Nicole Grabow
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of highlighting healthy food options on consumer food choices in a food bank setting.
Methods: Two community food banks participated in this study. One food bank served as the control, while a second food bank was rearranged so that fresh produce and other healthy products were the first options that shoppers encountered upon entering. After shopping, carts were inventoried for healthy vs non-healthy products. Composition of the carts from the control food bank were then compared to the contents of the carts from the intervention food bank.

Role Of Indigenous Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria In Promoting Plant Growth On Post Tin Mining Soil, Sri Widawati, Suliasih
Makara Journal of Science
Post tin mining soil is generally marginal with low pH, has poor nutrient content, and is thus unfavorable for plant growth, particularly for Sorghum bicolor, which is a nutrient-demanding plant. Indigenous bacteria are usually used in bioaugmentation to ameliorate environmental degradation due to their ability to adapt well. This research aimed to isolate indigenous nitrogen-fixing bacteria and evaluate its potential for promoting the growth of S. bicolor on post tin mining soil. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria were isolated from post tin mining soil by using specific media and identified by Bergey’s manual. Twenty five isolates were obtained, and eight of them (Azospirillum …

While children approaching end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are considered at risk of uremic anorexia and underweight they are also exposed to the global obesity epidemic. We sought to investigate the variation of nutritional status in children undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) around the globe. The distribution and course of body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score over time was examined prospectively in 1001 children and adolescents from 35 countries starting CPD who were followed in the International Pediatric PD Network (IPPN) Registry. The overall prevalence of underweight, and overweight/obesity at start of CPD was 8.9% and 19.7%, respectively. Underweight was …

Is Grassfed Meat And Dairy Better For Human And Environmental Health?, Frederick D. Provenza, Scott L. Kronberg, Pablo Gregorini

The health of livestock, humans, and environments is tied to plant diversity—and associated phytochemical richness—across landscapes. Health is enhanced when livestock forage on phytochemically rich landscapes, is reduced when livestock forage on simple mixture or monoculture pastures or consume high-grain rations in feedlots, and is greatly reduced for people who eat highly processed diets. Circumstantial evidence supports the hypothesis that phytochemical richness of herbivore diets enhances biochemical richness of meat and dairy, which is linked with human and environmental health. Among many roles they play in health, phytochemicals in herbivore diets protect meat and dairy from protein oxidation and lipid …

Indigenous people around the world experience shorter life expectancy, poorer health outcomes, and on average have less social capital, than non-Indigenous people in their respective countries. While national goals are to lower mortality and morbidity rates of Indigenous people, much evidence exists that indicates there is almost no Indigenous involvement in data collection, policy development, program implementation and development and measurement of services. A more holistic and culturally relevant framework is presented to improve services and outcomes for Indigenous populations.

The Global Burden of Disease study shows that the burden from mental and substance use disorders, measured in Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), has steadily risen in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) over the last three decades and is higher than the global average for almost all EMR countries). Even more alarming is the finding that depression, self-harm, anxiety and conduct disorders constitute four of the top 10 causes of DALYs among girls and boys aged 15-19 years and suicide is a leading cause of adolescent mortality.
