My Body, Their Choice: Childbearing Attitudes And Practices In Jamkhed, Maharashtra, Sienna Sewell
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Understanding the beliefs and practices of women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth is fundamental to the creation of successful public health interventions that target maternal and infant mortality. This study explores the childbearing practices of women in rural Jamkhed, as well as the social and economic factors that influence family planning, reproductive health-seeking, and delivery. Interviews and quantitative surveys were conducted with women in villages that have partnered with the Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) to examine how and why women access prenatal care during pregnancy. The influence of CRHP’s “Jamkhed Model” on healthcare access is considered in …

Tracing Race Through The Narrative Of A Oaxacan Ex-Bracero, Carlina Green
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
On March 21st, 2019, I was at a birthday lunch for my host mother at her parents’ house in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, where I am currently studying abroad. Her father began to ask me about the normal meal times in the United States, and shared that he had witnessed this cultural difference firsthand during his time as a migrant worker in the United States. I asked him more questions and learned that he had first gone to Chesterfield, Missouri as a participant in the bracero program in 1953 and later to Los Angeles as an undocumented migrant in the …
Lepidopteran Diversity And Abundance Across Five Different Indigenously Managed Land Use Zones In The Naso-Teribe Territory, Bocas Del Toro Province, Panama, Eli Dotson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Lepidopterans, the order that includes both moths and butterflies, are among the best-known insects taxonomically and ecologically due to the relative ease of monitoring them in comparison to other groups of insects. Their distribution follows that of other insects and forms of life, as around 90% of species have a tropical distribution. This incredibly speciose group of animals fills many vital roles in the ecosystems they inhabit, including herbivores in their larval stages, prey for a variety of predators in all life stages, and pollinators for many plant species as adults. In some circumstances, certain species may also serve as …

Islands In A Sea Of Aaruul: Globalization And Mongolian Cheesemakers, Pearse Anderson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Despite being a sparsely-populated country with less than 2% of its land arable, Mongolia has developed a rich and complex food culture, notably for its meat and dairy products, which could soon be at an historic high thanks to the tens of millions of animals on Mongolian pastureland. Many Mongolians and non-Mongolians view the countryside as a sea of milk that is currently being underutilized for economic exploitation. Various projects, whether funded and organized by international NGOs, the Mongolian government, or private companies, have tried to use Mongolian’s dairy resources to fill Mongolian demand, with more recent private ventures also …

Blue Grama Grass Genotype Affects Palatability And Preference By Semi-Arid Steppe Grasshoppers, Ava M. Hoffman, Holly Perretta, Nathan P. Lemoine, Melinda D. Smith
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The semi-arid shortgrass steppe ecosystem of North America is dominated by blue grama grass (Bouteloua gracilis), a species with substantial intraspecific variability, ecological significance, and economic value. Yet no studies have addressed within species differences in blue grama palatability or insect herbivore preference with respect to plant traits. We performed an experimental study to test the palatability and preference of two blue grama genotypes, wild type versus cultivar, by grasshopper herbivores in the Gomphocerinae subfamily. We found strong evidence that cultivar blue grama was more palatable than wild type and that grasshoppers preferred cultivar plants. Although we could …

Sex Segregation In Sports As A Public Health Issue, Nancy Leong, Emily Bartlett
Sex Segregation In Sports As A Public Health Issue, Nancy Leong, Emily Bartlett
Cardozo Law Review
This Article contributes to the growing debate about the merits of sex segregation in sports by approaching sex segregation in sports as a public health issue. Participation in sports has profound consequences for women's health. Engagement in athletics affects physical fitness, disease prevention, self-esteem, mental wellness, eating disorders, and many other health-related issues.
Sex segregation in sports reduces women's participation in sports and changes the nature of the sports in which women participate. Both of these issues have implications for the myriad health issues we discuss. The Article argues that analysis under the Equal Protection Clause of governmentally-imposed sex segregation …

Long-Term Behavior Change Of Participants In A Northeast Nutrition Education Program, Rebecca Bonnett, Mary Ellen Camire, Mona Therrien, Kathryn Yerxa
Journal of Extension
Limited data exist on the self-reported retention of core educational concepts by Maine Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) participants. We assessed the effectiveness of the program by comparing participants' responses on an EFNEP checklist completed before starting the program, immediately after the program, and 6 months after graduation. Results indicate that participants maintained certain positive behaviors. Frequencies with which participants shopped with a grocery list and used the Nutrition Facts label to make food choices increased after education, and those behaviors persisted long-term. Room for improvement also exists. The findings have implications for future program planning.

Extension's Role In The United States' Campaign To Reduce Food Waste, Lisa H. Mccoy
Journal of Extension
Extension can play a role in the United States' campaign to reduce consumer food waste by 2030. Food waste exists alongside food insecurity and affects individual households, agriculture, and the environment. Addressing food waste through a food systems approach requires involvement from Extension experts in family and consumer sciences, agriculture, environmental health, community development, policy, research, and education. Understanding the magnitude of and reasons for consumer food waste in the United States helps educators address this complex issue. By changing how people think about and manage food and food waste, Extension can have a significant impact on future generations.

The role of the school nurse continually evolves, with an increase in students who are medically fragile, have disabilities and those diagnosed with both acute and chronic illnesses. A major challenge for the school nurse is the number of students with severe allergies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates food allergies in children have increased by 50% in the past decade. These allergies can be life threatening and effect one in thirteen children under the age of eighteen, which means potentially two students in each classroom in the U.S. has a severe allergy. School nurses are responsible for …

University of the District of Columbia Law Review
In this article, we will focus on employer-based tax incentives for hiring ex-offenders. Central to the discussion will be the Work Opportunity Tax Credit ("WOTC"), which provides a tax credit to employers who hire qualified employees/ex-offenders under the program. Additionally, we will explore various state programs modeled on a tax-based incentive and conduct a comparative assessment of where federal and state programs are effective and where there is potential for reform. Without targeted policy solutions to address employment obstacles, ex-offenders are left facing persistent employment barriers as they attempt to return to their communities and start a new life after …

Lactate Level As A Prediction Factor Of Reperforation After Repairing Gastric Perforation, Vicky Sumarki Budipramana
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Reperforation after gastric perforation repair is a complication which increases the rate of morbidity and mortality in gastric perforation. The lack of ability of the tissue to use oxygen in septic condition causes anaerobic cellular metabolism and furthermore it will cause failure in closing the perforation. The production of anaerobic metabolism is lactic acid which can be measured from the blood. The aim of this study is to determine the cut-off point of blood lactate level as a predictor of reperforation after repairing gastric perforation. Forty-six patients diagnosed as gastric perforation, who were repaired in Dr Soetomo Hospital from October …
