The Glycosyltransferase Gene Elt1 (Osugt90a1) Protects Plasma Membranes During Chilling Stress In Rice, Yao Shi
Dissertations (1934 -)
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) has a sub-tropically origin and is sensitive to low-temperature stress at the young seedling stage. Very few effector genes that code enzymes involved in low-temperature stress response mechanisms have been identified so far. Here, we report a genome-wide association study (GWAS) mapping and a Bi-parental Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping using 202 O. sativa accessions from the Rice Mini-Core (RMC) collection, which uncovered 48 QTL across all 12 rice chromosomes associated with five chilling tolerance indices. In addition, we characterized qLTSS4-1, a novel strong-effect low-temperature seedling survivability (LTSS) QTL and its associated gene, Os04g24110, which is …

From Farm To Fork: A Firsthand Investigation Into New Hampshire’S Food System, Alexandra Papadakis
Inquiry Journal 2019
Inspired by my first year studying sustainable agriculture and food systems at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), I sought to get a better handle on the food system by diving into a research project with my mentor, Dr. Joanne Burke, a professor in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems. Together, we planned a full summer investigating various aspects of New Hampshire’s food system, allowing me to better understand what goes on from farm to fork and to think through potential opportunities that exist to improve food system viability in our state. Using the food system framework of …

Beyond Evaluation: Using The Re-Aim Framework For Program Planning In Extension, Laura E. Balis, Deborah H. John, Samantha M. Harden
Beyond Evaluation: Using The Re-Aim Framework For Program Planning In Extension, Laura E. Balis, Deborah H. John, Samantha M. Harden
Journal of Extension
Extension professionals need to apply sound frameworks to program planning and evaluation in order to demonstrate strong population health impact and value. Pragmatic application of the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework addresses the "who, what, when, where, how, and why" of a program's implementation. This article suggests pragmatic questions and example applications for each of the RE-AIM dimensions specifically for Extension professionals. This adapted RE-AIM tool can help Extension practitioners in all disciplines better plan and evaluate their programs and demonstrate the public value of Extension.
Impacts Of Novel Fire And Herbivory Regimes On Snow-Waterresources And Resilience Of Aspen Forests, Jordan Daniel Maxwell
Impacts Of Novel Fire And Herbivory Regimes On Snow-Waterresources And Resilience Of Aspen Forests, Jordan Daniel Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
Human activities and expansion have created novel disturbance patterns across Earth’s landscapes. Disturbance is an ecological interruption after which ecosystem recovery or transition into a new state can occur, affecting biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and theavailability of ecosystem services. Fire and herbivory are two of the most widespread forces of disturbance which shape ecosystems globally. In temperate forest ecosystems, fire affects forest composition, which influences the diversity and resilience of ecosystems (chapters 1 and 2) and forest canopy structure, which is important to snowpack accumulation and the availability of water resources (chapters 3 and 4). In chapter one, the effects of …

Vietnamese Family Caregivers’ Adjustment Process To Their Caregiving Roles For Family Members With Dementia, Trang Nguyen
Vietnamese Family Caregivers’ Adjustment Process To Their Caregiving Roles For Family Members With Dementia, Trang Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the psychological process that Vietnamese family members go through to adjust to the caregiving role for their relatives with dementia. Adopting constructivist grounded theory, 30 face-to-face, semi-structured interviews, including 10 follow-up interviews, were conducted with 20 Vietnamese primary family caregivers of relatives with dementia from the National Geriatric Hospital in Vietnam. The study results reveal that Vietnamese family caregivers held limited understanding of dementia. They used a mixed explanatory model, combining both folk (e.g., dementia as normal aging) and biomedical approaches (e.g., dementia as a brain-related disease) to explain causes of dementia. Family cohesion and responsibility are …

Examining Perceptions And Sensemaking Of Wellness Among African American Women Who Manifest The Archetype Of The Strong Black Woman, Donya D. Wallace
Theses and Dissertations
Furthering a strengths-based approach to mental health and wellness requires researchers to explore the role of cultural systems, sociohistorical factors and the intersectionality of race and gender as factors impacting wellness. To fill the existing gap in the literature describing perceptions of wellness through a cultural lens, I examined experiences of wellness among African American women who manifest the archetype of the Strong Black Woman. Working within the client’s perspective, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was employed to analyze data collected during semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus groups. I conducted the interviews to explored participant personal and social experiences with wellness. Super-ordinate …

Rising Temperatures In Hot Regions – How Many Species Would Be Able To Survive?, Sounak Ghosh
Rising Temperatures In Hot Regions – How Many Species Would Be Able To Survive?, Sounak Ghosh
Biology Theses
Temperatures are rising throughout the world but not uniformly. Different latitudes have varying degrees of temperature rise and the most rapid changes are happening in the higher northern latitudes while only minor warming is taking place in the hot tropical regions. It has been widely assumed that the biggest ecological impacts will be seen in the cooler northern latitudes and that the impacts in hot tropical regions will be much smaller. However, if species in hot regions are already close to their thermal limits and if species in cold regions are far below them, it may be that small temperature …
Microarray Analysis Identifies Potential Genes Associated With Botrytis Cinerea And Hormonal Stresses, Kenna Marie Whitley
Microarray Analysis Identifies Potential Genes Associated With Botrytis Cinerea And Hormonal Stresses, Kenna Marie Whitley
Biology Theses
Biotic and abiotic stresses critically influence plant survival and growth; survival depends on the ability to correctly sense and react to their environment. Certain environmental stresses must be overcome through careful manipulation of internal levels, and of the resulting signaling cascades. Hormones signaling networks and the crosstalk among each respective hormone signaling pathway are principle for response mediation via transcriptional reprogramming or altered signaling pathways. The long-term objective is to determine how plants sense biotic stresses, and how hormone signaling networks control and direct plant responses to the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea. This research aims to identify commonly regulated genes …

Identifying Exceptionally Performing Third Grades In Indiana: Who Is To Blame?, Emily Troyer 19
Honor Scholar Theses
Federal and state governments want to know that their constituents' tax dollars are being spent well, and that public education is serving the People well. To assess a school's efficacy, they calculate an accountability score. Although state-level scoring systems vary, neither the federal law nor a single state's law require that demographic characteristics of a school's student population be held constant when it is being evaluated. This complicates the assessment of a school's adequacy because factors outside of a school's control influence student performance; when a school is evaluated without taking this into account, it is being unfairly credited with …
Differentiating Legislative From Nonlegislative Rules: An Empirical And Qualitative Analysis, Nadav D. Ben Zur
Differentiating Legislative From Nonlegislative Rules: An Empirical And Qualitative Analysis, Nadav D. Ben Zur
Fordham Law Review
The elusive distinction between legislative rules and nonlegislative rules has frustrated courts, motivated voluminous scholarly debate, and ushered in a flood of litigation against administrative agencies. In the absence of U.S. Supreme Court guidance on the proper demarcating line, circuit courts have adopted various tests to ascertain a rule’s proper classification. This Note analyzes all 241 cases in which a circuit court has used one or more of the enunciated tests to differentiate legislative from nonlegislative rules. These opinions come from every one of the thirteen circuits and span the period of the early 1950s through 2018. This Note identifies …

Exploratory Studies Of Microbiome Dysbiosis And Plasticity In Mice And Humans, Xin Zhou
Doctoral Dissertations
The human body is cohabitated with large number of microorganisms, which potentially influence the health conditions of the host. Dynamic interactions between microbiome and host are critical for this cohabitation relationship. Among human population, the composition of microbiome shows clear interpersonal variations and intrapersonal plasticity, with patterns and mechanisms that are currently unclear. In the first part of this thesis, we explored the human microbiome variations in relation to healthy aging, aimed to understand if microbiome imbalance, or dysbiosis, is a common phenotype of older adults regardless of the age-related diseases. In the second part, we expanded our investigation on …

Characterizing Aft1/2-Grx3/4 Interaction And The Role Of Bol2 During Iron Regulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Rivers
Characterizing Aft1/2-Grx3/4 Interaction And The Role Of Bol2 During Iron Regulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Rivers
Senior Theses
Iron dysregulation has been linked to a variety of human diseases, such as anemia, Friedreich’s ataxia, X-linked sideroblastic anemia, sideroblastic-like microcytic anemia, and myopathy. Thus, it is vitally important to understand the mechanisms for regulating intracellular iron. Here, we use fluorescence microscopy techniques in live cells to study interactions of the yeast proteins Grx3/4, Aft1/2, and Bol2, which have been shown to be involved in turning off iron import when the cell has adequate iron. Modified versions of genes encoding these proteins have been incorporated into several yeast backgrounds to use fluorescence to monitor interactions under varying iron levels.

Factors Associated With Advance Care Plans And End-Of-Life Care Choices Among Elderly Americans: An Analysis Of Health And Retirement Study Data, Agha Ajmal
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction
Advance care plans (ACP) allow people to plan for their end-of-life care before they become incompetent to make their treatment decisions. The umbrella term Advance Care Plans (ACP) includes the three most commonly used end-of-life care plans: Advance Care Planning Discussions (ACP discussions) and two advanced directives: living will and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPAHC). The ACP discussions are the verbal discussions about end-of-life plans, whereas the advance directives are written documents.
ACPs are distinct nuances of end-of-life care planning. ACP discussions address a wide array of end-of-life care issues, including terminal care, funeral, burial and …
The Intersections Of Health And Wealth: Socioeconomic Status, Frailty, And Mortality In Industrial England, Samantha Lee Yaussy
The Intersections Of Health And Wealth: Socioeconomic Status, Frailty, And Mortality In Industrial England, Samantha Lee Yaussy
Theses and Dissertations
Socioeconomic status (SES) is considered one of the most powerful predictors of mortality today. However, studies of health in living populations and bioarchaeological studies of health in the past often oversimplify the connection between SES and mortality and overlook heterogeneity in frailty within a population and the potential for multiple types of marginalization to be layered within a single individual. This dissertation project uses skeletal samples to examine the interactions of SES, demographic characteristics (e.g., age and sex), exposure to physiological stressors, and mortality in the context of industrialization in 18th- and 19th-century England. Skeletal data from four industrial-era cemeteries …
