Validation Testing Of A Synthetic Spine And Upgraded Protocol For A Biomechanical Evaluation Of A Lumbar Spinal Orthosis, Daniel Hoyer
Validation Testing Of A Synthetic Spine And Upgraded Protocol For A Biomechanical Evaluation Of A Lumbar Spinal Orthosis, Daniel Hoyer
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent in all walks of life. Standard conservative treatment methods may work for some, but others go on to have spinal injections, opioids, or surgical procedures to alleviate pain. The Distractive and Mobility-Enabling Orthosis (DMO) was developed to meet the need for a conservative, drug-free treatment method. In this research, the low back support test protocol for evaluating DMO success was upgraded with a new synthetic lumbar spine model. The latest generation of the DMO project was then evaluated using the new system in a laboratory setting and on a pilot physical therapy patient.First, …

College Students And Snap: The New Face Of Food Insecurity In The United States, Nicholas Freudenberg, Sara Goldrick-Rab, Janet Poppendieck
Publications and Research
Over the last decade, multiple studies of food insecurity among college students have found rates from 20% to more than 50%, considerably higher than the 12% rate for the entire US population.
Reasons for higher rates of food insecurity among college students include a growing population of low-income college students, high college costs and insufficient financial aid, more financial hardship among many low- and moderate-income families, a weak labor market for part-time workers, declining per capita college resources, and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) policies that specifically exclude many college students from participation.
This essay reviews the causes and consequences …
Using Video And Mobile Applications To Manage Distress Following Acute Copd Exacerbation With Respiratory Failure: A Case Report, Linda Rose Shober
Using Video And Mobile Applications To Manage Distress Following Acute Copd Exacerbation With Respiratory Failure: A Case Report, Linda Rose Shober
Case Report Posters
Chronic lower respiratory diseases, mainly chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), represent a significant economic burden to the healthcare system and are among the top three leading causes of death in the United States. An acute exacerbation of chronic pulmonary disorder (AECOPD) is a worsening of the respiratory symptoms associated with COPD including dyspnea, increased sputum production, cough, and airway obstruction. Frequent AECOPD influences psychological status and may worsen comorbid anxiety, depression, and increase distress levels. As a result, motivation, mood, and participation in therapy may also be affected. Most exacerbations may be treated effectively on an outpatient basis. A fraction …

Food Waste At Lewiston Middle School, Alex Cullen, Dylan Simon, Anne Trapp
Community Engaged Research Reports
In 2017, 30-40% of all food produced in the United States ended up in landfills and contributed to the country’s carbon footprint. At the same time, 13% of US households were food insecure. In Maine, however, that number rises to 15.7% and in the city of Lewiston, ME, it to 25.2%. Enough of the Lewiston population is affected by food insecurity to make the Lewiston School District eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which guarantees free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of socioeconomic background. As the only middle school in the district, Lewiston Middle School (LMS) receives …

Oklahoma Extension educators encountered barriers related to trainings and program delivery for a caregiver education program produced by Oklahoma State University Extension. Oklahoma family and consumer sciences educators were interviewed about perceived barriers to attending trainings and delivering the program. Findings indicated that staff shortages, program prioritization, challenges in developing an audience, and communication issues with the program team made it difficult for educators to engage with the program. Strategies for improvement based on the findings were devised.

The Histoplasma Capsulatum Ddr48 Gene Is Required For Survival Within Macrophages And Resistance To Oxidative Stress And Antifungal Drugs, Logan Blancett
Dissertations
Histoplasma capsulatum(Hc)is a systemic, dimorphic fungal pathogen that affects upwards of 500,000 individuals in the United States annually. Hc grows as a multicellular mold at environmental temperatures; whereas, upon inhalation into a human or other mammalian host, it transforms into a unicellular, pathogenic yeast. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on characterizing the DNA damage-responsive gene HcDDR48. HcDDR48was originally isolated via a subtractive DNA library enriched for transcripts enriched in the mold-phase of Hcgrowth. Upon further analysis we found that HcDDR48is not just expressed in the mold morphotype, but both growth programs …
Implementation Of A Program To Identify And Assess At-Risk Patients For Peripheral Arterial Disease, Brenna Brothers
Implementation Of A Program To Identify And Assess At-Risk Patients For Peripheral Arterial Disease, Brenna Brothers
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Lower extremity peripheral arterial disease is a condition that affects approximately 200 million people worldwide and 8 million women and men in the United States (McDermott, 2015). Although there are modifiable risk factors associated with peripheral arterial disease, it is believed to be under-diagnosed and under-treated in the general population (McDermott, 2015). The progression of asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease to symptomatic peripheral arterial disease can be reduced with the introduction of medications and therapeutic lifestyle modifications (Itoga et al., 2018). The purpose of the project was to identify and assess at-risk clinic patients with typical and atypical symptoms for lower …

From Carver To Carter: The Political Economy Of Peanut Cultivation In The South, 1945-1976, Hayden Noel Mcdaniel
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the creation of a robust peanut industry in the South during the twentieth century, tracing its growth from a minor, local subsistence commodity to an agribusiness contributing to mass consumption. This study argues that local groups, constituents of peanut producing regions, and their representation in Congress worked together to establish a national peanut culture. Because peanuts’ rise in importance happened nearly simultaneously with the escalation of federal agricultural policies, studying peanuts rather than other traditional crops best demonstrates the interconnected relationship between federal policy and agricultural politics in the South.
Multidrug Resistance Regulators Mara, Soxs, Rob, And Rama Repress Flagellar Gene Expression And Motility In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, Srinivas Thota, Lon Chubiz
Multidrug Resistance Regulators Mara, Soxs, Rob, And Rama Repress Flagellar Gene Expression And Motility In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, Srinivas Thota, Lon Chubiz
Biology Department Faculty Works
Production of flagella is costly and subject to global multilayered regulation, which is reflected in the hierarchical control of flagellar production in many bacterial species. For Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and its relatives, global regulation of flagellar production primarily occurs through the control of flhDC transcription and mRNA translation. In this study, the roles of the homologous multidrug resistance regulators MarA, SoxS, Rob, and RamA (constituting the mar-sox-rob regulon in S. Typhimurium) in regulating flagellar gene expression were explored. Each of these regulators was found to inhibit flagellar gene expression, production of flagella, and motility. To different degrees, repression via …

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin
The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin
Senior Theses
How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.
Although some in …

The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Exercise On Postprandial Metabolic Responses In Younger And Older Adults, Hannah Frick
The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Exercise On Postprandial Metabolic Responses In Younger And Older Adults, Hannah Frick
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Over 370,000 Americans, primarily between the ages of 60 and 79, die annually as a result of cardiovascular disease caused by physical inactivity and a diet that is calorically dense and high in fat. Current findings in young and middle-aged adults suggest that acute exercise with energy expenditure in excess of 500 kcals, may attenuate the deleterious health effects caused by consuming the typical American meal. Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute exercise and aging on postprandial lipemia (PPL) and postprandial glycemia (PPG). We hypothesized that aerobic exercise performed prior to the consumption …

Implementing A Community-Based Breastfeeding And Infant Support Tent At University Of Arkansas Athletic Events, Moranda Clark
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Breastfeeding is such an important role in a mother and baby’s relationship as it establishes a unique bond while also providing health benefits for both parties involved. Unfortunately, many women are discriminated against for trying to breastfeed in public and with little to no designated breastfeeding areas or sanitary places in such spaces; they are left with very few viable options. During the last year I have been completing an internship surrounding the subject of breastfeeding and have helped to implement a breastfeeding and infant support tent at University of Arkansas athletic events. My work has included extensive research, lactation …

The Effects Of Seed-Applied Fluopyram On Root Penetration And Development Of Meloidogyne Incognita On Cotton And Soybean, Tracy Hawk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Plant-parasitic nematodes are major pests of cotton and soybean in Arkansas, and across the Southern United States. These nematodes cause more than $3 billion worth of crop losses each year, in part due to lack of available control tactics, such as nematicides. Fluopyram has recently been registered as a seed-treatment nematicide in agronomic crops. The toxicity of fluopyram against Meloidogyne incognita infection has been reported, however, information on root protection provided by fluopyram against Meloidogyne incognita is lacking. The first objective of this research was to evaluate the effect seed-applied fluopyram had on nematode development, root galling, and reproduction on …
