Animal Agriculture Liability For Climatic Nuisance: A Path Forward For Climate Change Litigation?, Daniel E. Walters May 2019

Animal Agriculture Liability For Climatic Nuisance: A Path Forward For Climate Change Litigation?, Daniel E. Walters

Faculty Scholarship

Despite possessing statutory authority to regulate at least some contributing causes of climate change, environmental regulators in the United States have recently found themselves tied up in political gridlock. In response, advocates are turning from the regulatory track to a common law liability track, bringing public nuisance suits against fossil fuel producers and electric utilities. However, most of these public nuisance suits have met a common fate: they have been held to be displaced by the comprehensive regulatory framework for controlling greenhouse gas emissions contained in the Clean Air Act. As long as there is even the possibility of regulatory …

Correlation Between The Frequency Of Electronic Parent Monitoring Of Grades And Elementary Student Achievement, Michael Scott Robinson May 2019

Correlation Between The Frequency Of Electronic Parent Monitoring Of Grades And Elementary Student Achievement, Michael Scott Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Parent engagement in the education of a child is a scriptural obligation expressively outlined by 2 Timothy 3:16 - 17 (New International Version). Federal legislation also emphasized the importance of parent engagement via the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), which is supported by professional research to have a positive effect on student achievement. One important limitation of current research is the effect of technology as the intervening variable on elementary student achievement. The purpose of this study was to understand if a relationship exists between the frequency of electronic parent monitoring of grades, using gradebook views from a Student Information …

The Feminization Of Prehistory: Evidence For The Emergence Of Complex Modern Behaviors Before C.70,000 Years Ago, Jeffrey Vreeland May 2019

The Feminization Of Prehistory: Evidence For The Emergence Of Complex Modern Behaviors Before C.70,000 Years Ago, Jeffrey Vreeland

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis seeks to understand the relationship between environmental, genetic, and physiological changes that were concurrent with the emergence of complex modern behaviors and the morphing of archaic Homo sapiens into anatomically modern humans, between c. 190,000 years ago and c. 70,000 years ago. The thesis also focuses on how the unique survival needs of mothers and children contributed to the emergence of modern behaviors.

Archaic Homo sapiens have been dated to have emerged in history c. 318,000 years ago (Hublin, et al., 2017). The females of archaic Homo sapiens have been genetically dated to have morphed into anatomically modern …

BACKGROUND: Global dietary recommendations for and cardiovascular effects of linoleic acid, the major dietary omega-6 fatty acid, and its major metabolite, arachidonic acid, remain controversial. To address this uncertainty and inform international recommendations, we evaluated how in vivo circulating and tissue levels of linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA) relate to incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) across multiple international studies.

METHODS: We performed harmonized, de novo, individual-level analyses in a global consortium of 30 prospective observational studies from 13 countries. Multivariable-adjusted associations of circulating and adipose tissue LA and AA biomarkers with incident total CVD and subtypes (coronary heart disease, …

Direct Behavior Observations And Teachers' Ratings Of Internalizing Problem Behaviors, Lauren R. Parker May 2019

Direct Behavior Observations And Teachers' Ratings Of Internalizing Problem Behaviors, Lauren R. Parker

Honors Theses

Systematic direct observation is a commonly used method in schools to compile data on students' behavior in a naturalistic setting. Internalizing problem behaviors, behaviors such as social withdrawal, somatic complaints, and anxiousness, can lead to adverse consequences and have not, to the researchers' knowledge, been systematically observed in a classroom setting. Additionally, students have never been identified for intervention through direct observation. The researchers administered the Student Internalizing Behavior Screener (SIBS), which is a 7-item, teacher-completed, Likert-type scale which measures occurrences of internalizing problem behaviors. Once scores from the SIBS were calculated, students who scored at-risk were chosen for observation …

Harnessing The Economic, Nutritive And Commercial Potential Of Pomace Employing Principles Of Green Chemistry By Extraction Of Biologically Active Components (Bacs) Through Ultrahigh- Pressure Extraction, Allison Larsen

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

There has been substantial social and environmental pressure for the efficient reutilization of agricultural and food industry residues. According to estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization in the United States, 1-2 billion metric tons (Mt) of edible food produced for human consumption is wasted every year and among that statistic fruit processing industries contribute ~0.3-0.5 billion tons of waste. Pomace contains waste fractions such as skin peels, seeds, and pulp that could theoretically be an excellent substitute for feedstock for recovery of bioactive chemical compounds like lipids, pectin, flavonoids, and dietary fibers. However, these wastes are either incinerated or …

Bilateral Foot Drop Linked To Rapid Intentional Weight Loss And Long Distance Walking., Morgan S. Aguirre, Josh Gibson, Dominika Lozowska

Marshall Journal of Medicine

There are many causes of acute onset foot drop ranging from deep fibular nerve or sciatic nerve injury caused by trauma or a compressive mass such as a neuroma, to spinal cord disorders like disc herniation causing L4-5 radiculopathy, and various muscular dystrophies affecting the tibialis anterior muscle responsible for foot dorsiflexion and eversion. Even brain disorders like MS, stroke or ALS can result in foot drop. We present a case of bilateral foot drop as a complication of rapid 70 lb weight loss which was described in literature previously as “slimmer’s palsy”.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor of unknown pathogenesis characterized by poorly differentiated carcinoma tissue containing sarcoma-like differentiation of either spindle or giant cell and rarely occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and hepatobiliary-pancreatic system.1 Primary hepatic sarcomatoid carcinoma accounts for only 0.2 % of primary malignant liver tumors, and 1.8% of all surgically resected hepatocellular carcinomas.2 The majority of hepatic sarcomatoid carcinoma cases appear to occur simultaneously with hepatocellular or cholangiocellular carcinoma.3 The preferred treatment for hepatic sarcomatoid carcinoma is surgical resection and the overall prognosis is poor.4 This case depicts a 62-year-old female whom …

Relationships Between Goal-Setting, Motivational Traits, And Job Performance, Charissa Samaniego Apr 2019

Relationships Between Goal-Setting, Motivational Traits, And Job Performance, Charissa Samaniego

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Ensuring employees are and remain motivated is an important issue for organizations. One problem regarding employee motivation is not everyone is motivated in the same way, thus affecting performance. Goal setting has shown to increase performance when specific and difficult goals are set. Moreover, newer research concerning motivational traits has sought to explain individual differences in motivation. This trait framework shows potential, but research on the relationship between job performance, goal-setting and motivational traits has not been clearly established. The goals of this correlational study were to (1) determine if a relationship exists between motivational traits and job performance, (2) …

Unpacking The Meaning And Impact Of The Components Of End-Of-Life Preparation Among Cancer Patients, Kristin Levoy

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths annually. Cancer patients and their caregivers do not adequately prepare for the end-of-life, creating the conditions for poorer quality deaths. To address this lack of preparation, this dissertation aimed to unpack the meaning and impact of the components of preparation for the end-of-life among cancer patients. Three independent studies were conducted to achieve this aim: 1) a concept analysis to clarify the meaning of end-of-life decision making in the context of chronic life-limiting disease, distinguishing it from preparation for the …

Sex And Parasitism Influence Reproductive And Brain Plasticity In The Paper Wasp, Polistes Dominula, Kristine Gandia Apr 2019

Sex And Parasitism Influence Reproductive And Brain Plasticity In The Paper Wasp, Polistes Dominula, Kristine Gandia

Open Access Theses

Plasticity has evolved across the animal kingdom, providing energetic tradeoffs to optimize behavior and reproduction. Brain plasticity provides advantages to process information from changing cues and cognitive demands, and reproductive plasticity is influenced by energetic costs and benefits of reproduction. Therefore, I hypothesize that investment in brain tissue and reproduction will be influenced by selective pressures from different ecological and social contexts. I take advantage of Polistes dominula, a wasp species with three distinct phenotypes to test this differing investment hypothesis. First, females are social with a flexible caste system, behavior and reproduction. Second, males spend most of their life …

Animal Experimentation: Working Towards A Paradigm Change, Kathrin Herrmann (Ed.), Kimberley Jayne (Ed.)

eBooks

Animal experimentation has been one of the most controversial areas of animal use, mainly due to the intentional harms inflicted upon animals for the sake of hoped-for benefits in humans. Despite this rationale for continued animal experimentation, shortcomings of this practice have become increasingly more apparent and well-documented. However, these limitations are not yet widely known or appreciated, and there is a danger that they may simply be ignored. The 51 experts who have contributed to Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change critically review current animal use in science, present new and innovative non-animal approaches to address urgent scientific …
