Socioeconomic Inequality In Life Expectancy In India, Miqdad Asaria, Sumit Mazumdar, Samik Chowdhury, Papiya Mazumdar, Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay, Indrani Gupta

Journal Articles

Introduction Concern for health inequalities is an important driver of health policy in India; however, much of the empirical evidence regarding health inequalities in the country is piecemeal focusing only on specific diseases or on access to particular treatments. This study estimates inequalities in health across the whole life course for the entire Indian population. These estimates are used to calculate the socioeconomic disparities in life expectancy at birth in the population. Methods Population mortality data from the Indian Sample Registration System were combined with data on mortality rates by wealth quintile from the National Family Health Survey to calculate …

Consumer Power To Change The Food System? A Critical Reading Of Food Labels As Governance Spaces: The Case Of Acai Berry Superfoods, Christine Parker, Hope Johnson, Janine Curll May 2019

Consumer Power To Change The Food System? A Critical Reading Of Food Labels As Governance Spaces: The Case Of Acai Berry Superfoods, Christine Parker, Hope Johnson, Janine Curll

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article argues that the marketing claims on food labels are a governance space worthy of critical examination. We use a case study of superfood açaí berry products to illustrate how marketing claims on food labels encapsulate dominant neoliberal constructions of global food systems. These marketing claims implicitly promise that by making careful choices consumers can resist and redress the ravages of unbridled global capitalism. Food labels suggest that consumers can use market signals to simultaneously govern our own selves and the market to ensure sustainable, fair, and healthy consumption. In response, this article develops, justifies and applies a socio-legal …

Federal Regulation Of Pesticide Residues: A Brief History And Analysis, Kate Z. Graham May 2019

Federal Regulation Of Pesticide Residues: A Brief History And Analysis, Kate Z. Graham

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In the United States today, there are over 900 pesticides in use1 and over 400 are approved for use in food production, whether used as part of the growing process or in post-harvest handling. Although the history of pesticide use in food crops goes back centuries, the post-war period has seen an enormous growth in the varieties and amounts of pesticides used in our food system. As our reliance on pesticides has grown, pesticides have become a divisive issue. Pesticide advocates view them as essential to a secure and reliable food supply needed to feed a growing world population. Detractors, …

Outcomes Of Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Enteral Feeding Protocol In Neonates Weighing Less Than 1800g At Birth, Rebecca Edwards

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

Background:

Several studies have demonstrated that the implementation of standardized enteral feeding guidelines can lead to positive outcomes in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), including improved nutrition, decreased need for parenteral nutrition (PN), central lines and decreased costs. Furthermore, implementation of standard feeding regimens have significantly reduced the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a devastating gastrointestinal emergency in neonates. It has been reported that NEC has an iatrogenic component related to variations in feeding practices. While the exact mechanism of the reduced risk of NEC and implementation of feeding protocols is unclear, standard feeding regimens likely improve consistency in …

Food Is Medicine: A Low-Cost, Plant-Based Cooking Class Series For Food Pantry Users, Carolyn Ellis May 2019

Food Is Medicine: A Low-Cost, Plant-Based Cooking Class Series For Food Pantry Users, Carolyn Ellis

Senior Honors Projects

Food insecurity, defined as the limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate, safe, and acceptable food, is a major public health concern. In 2017, 15 million US households were at one point food insecure. Food insecure adults typically have poorer diet quality than food secure adults independent of poverty. Both food insecurity and poor diet quality are associated with diet sensitive chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. People who rely on food pantries are a subgroup of concern due to their limited ability to purchase food. As meat, poultry, and seafood are the most expensive items …

Self-Report Participation Of Physical Activity Outside Of School On Rate Of Motor Skills Development In Elementary Students, Maritza Cuevas, Kara Lynn Boynewicz Dr., Brandi Eveland-Sayers Dr.

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this research project, the question of why some younger children appear to have better motor skills than older children is investigated. The hypothesis proposed is that children involved in physical activities after school or in the evenings have better motor skills at younger ages than children who are not involved in physical activities outside of school. Young children have very varied levels of motor skills competency that have developed due to living in different environments and having varied opportunity to be physically active. These differences are a result of factors like socioeconomic status, parental influence, climate, culture, etc.1 Sports …

Subjective Visual Vertical And Otolith Compensation: Evaluating Off-Axis Rotation Stimulus In Healthy Controls, Eva Price May 2019

Subjective Visual Vertical And Otolith Compensation: Evaluating Off-Axis Rotation Stimulus In Healthy Controls, Eva Price

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The vestibular system senses changes in head position and is responsible for the brain’s perception of verticality. Vestibular dysfunction is caused by deficits in the semicircular canals and/or otolith end-organs with resulting symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, and unsteadiness. Current vestibular rehabilitation focuses on compensation of the semicircular canal-mediated vestibulo-ocular reflex through gaze and balance exercises. Little is known about rehabilitation of otolith organ function, yet research findings suggest that fall risk may be related to otolith dysfunction. A recent case study demonstrated improvement of vertical perception and balance following off-axis rotation in a rotary chair, showing that such stimulation may …

This study examined the moderating effect of rurality on several factors of healthcare in a sample of women between the ages of 18 and 50. Self-rated health (SRH) was hypothesized to predict healthcare satisfaction, healthcare adherence, and medical mistrust. Furthermore, rurality was hypothesized to weaken the relationships between SRH and healthcare satisfaction and adherence; it was further hypothesized to exacerbate the relationship between SRH and medical mistrust. A survey containing a single-item measure of …

The Chelation Of Metal Ions By Vicibactin, A Siderophore Produced By Rhizobium Leguminosarum Atcc 14479, Joshua Stinnett May 2019

The Chelation Of Metal Ions By Vicibactin, A Siderophore Produced By Rhizobium Leguminosarum Atcc 14479, Joshua Stinnett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Vicibactin is a small, high-affinity iron chelator produced by Rhizobium leguminosarum ATCC 14479. Previous work has shown that vicibactin is produced and secreted from the cell to sequester ferric iron from the environment during iron-deplete conditions. This ferric iron is then transported into the cell to be converted into ferrous iron. This study uses UV-Vis spectroscopy as well as ion trap-time of flight mass spectroscopy to determine that vicibactin does form a complex with copper(II) ions, however, at a much lower affinity than for iron(III). Stability tests have shown that the copper(II)-vicibactin complex is stable over time. The results of …

Mooove Over Cow's Milk: Why The Fda Should Amend Their Guidelines To Include For Plant-Based Alternatives, Lauren Harris

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Along with the rise in plant-based alternatives to conventional animal-based foods has been a concern over the use of terms established by the FDA that are specific to animal-based products. Can companies use terms such as "milk" when the product does not come from an animal or "mayo" when the product does not contain eggs? What if a company uses these terms in violation of the FDA's established guidelines and the FDA chooses not to take action? This article explores the history of the FDA, the rise of plant-based alternatives to conventional animal-based foods, consequent litigation and proposed legislation over …

Evaluation Of Herd Size Management Strategies, Colson A. Tester

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is comprised of two studies examining the effects of price signal based herd size management strategies on profitability of cow-calf operations. Herd size management strategies were evaluated across the previous two cattle cycles, 1990-2014, using a fixed land resource and included a variety of production scenarios. These scenarios varied in terms of stocking rates, fertilizer applications rates, and calving season. Each scenario was also analyzed both with and without weather effects on forage production. Weather effects were simulated using a production index derived from satellite imagery across the observed 25-year period. Three herd size management strategies: i) constant …

First Thirty Days Of Life: Examining Calf Behavioral Development In Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus Leucas) And Pacific White-Sided Dolphins (Lagenorhyncus Obliquidens) At One Zoological Facility, Kendal Smith

Master's Theses

Cetacean development is important for general comparative understanding and the implementation of informed husbandry policies. Due to the inaccessibility of many of these species in the wild, researchers can study managed care populations to better understand basic developmental patterns of cetaceans, as well as to improve husbandry policies for facility animals. However, no previous studies have attempted to observe the behavioral development of Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhyncus obliquidens). Eight beluga whale calves and four Pacific white-sided dolphin calves were observed for the first 30 days of life to determine the developmental trajectory of several typically monitored behaviors. The …

Seven individuals with documented pellagra and nine individuals randomly selected for comparison from the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection were evaluated for caries, alveolar bone loss, periostitis, osteoporosis, cribra orbitalia, and porotic hyperostosis. Results indicate that the pellagra sample had lower rates of caries and alveolar bone loss, and higher rates of periostitis of the tibia and fibula in relation to the comparison sample. No osteoporosis, cribra orbitalia, or porotic hyperostosis was found in the pellagra sample. No …

Hope For Struggling School Districts, Mary D. Travis May 2019

Hope For Struggling School Districts, Mary D. Travis

Master's Theses

Education improves the opportunities and life-chance outcomes of our children, and is a key factory in both economic and community development. Although high school graduation rates have shown improvement nationwide in recent years, public education is suffering from increasing inequality between different school districts and within the same school districts. Such inequalities widen academic outcome gaps and can result in entire school districts being branded as academic failures. However, there is also encouraging evidence of struggling schools and school districts moving toward improvement. Innovative leaders who are committed to inclusive and rigorous academics, shared leadership, and an in-depth understanding of …

Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Fatty Acid-Induced Changes In Vibrio Cholerae Persistence And Pathogenicity, Abigail Doyle May 2019

Influence Of Environmental Conditions On Fatty Acid-Induced Changes In Vibrio Cholerae Persistence And Pathogenicity, Abigail Doyle

Honors Theses

Vibrio cholerae, a Gram-negative bacterium, is responsible for the acute intestinal infection known as cholera. This illness is due in part to V. cholerae’s ability to sense and adapt to changing environments as it is ingested into the human body from brackish environments. It was shown in recent studies that this bacteria has the ability to uptake exogenous fatty acids, resulting in changes to V. cholerae persistence and pathogenicity. The aim of this research is to determine the extent to which these additional exogenous UFAs influence the persistence and pathogenicity of V. cholerae throughout its transitional period from brackish environments …

Let’S Talk About Sex: An Analysis Of The Gaps In Effective Sex Education In The United States And A Proposed Solution, Mackenzie Butera May 2019

Let’S Talk About Sex: An Analysis Of The Gaps In Effective Sex Education In The United States And A Proposed Solution, Mackenzie Butera

Honors Theses

The United States is not currently providing effective avenues through which the majority of U.S children are accessing comprehensive information about sexual health. This gap in education is causing serious consequences emotionally, mentally and physically for U.S. youth. It is critical that discourse surrounding sex and healthy relationships be normalized so as not to closet, stigmatize or victim blame children during formative years. Historically, the United States has perverted the right to education by allocating significant federal funding to abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula. Although this content has been repeatedly proven ineffective and the U.S. continues to rank high amongst developing countries for …

Markers Of Mineral Homeostasis And Bone Turnover In Patients With Acute Hip Fractures, Kathleen Estrada, Mahalakshi Honasoge, Arti Bhan, Sudhaker D Rao

MERF 2019 - Clinical Research

Markers of Mineral Homeostasis and Bone Turnover in Patients Presenting with Acute Hip Fractures. It is generally assumed that bone turnover increases soon after a fracture, particularly after a major fracture such as hip. However, very little data exists on bone turnover markers (BTM) immediately after a hip fracture. In addition, it is unclear if the BTMs are related to prevailing VDN and parathyroid function. As part of ongoing project we assessed these characteristics in a larger sample (162), and further evaluated the indices of mineral homeostasis (as assessed by serum PTH and 25-OHD levels), and bone turnover (as assessed …
