GW Research Days 2016 - 2020
Beverages containing low-calories sweeteners (LCSB) are used as alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), yet their effects on the overall diet and effectiveness for weight management are unclear. The objective of this analysis was to examine energy and macronutrient intake among children who report LCSB and SSB consumption. The findings of this analysis challenge the utility of LCSB consumption as a strategy for weight management in children.

Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard
Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Methane (CH4) is one of the major greenhouse gases (GHG) generated in landfills and has a global warming effect 28 times more than carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, decreasing methane emissions into the atmosphere from landfills is critically important. In the upper portions of a landfill cover, methane is exposed to oxygen and oxidized aerobically to carbon dioxide while passing through the cover soil; this lowers the overall contribution of the landfill to climate change. However, because of the low permeability of the landfill cover, no aerobic oxidation occurs in the bottom of the cover because oxygen cannot penetrate to those …

Developing a Creative Learning Format for Street Children
As the number of street children grow globally, governments and UN agencies are looking at solutions to cater to their needs of shelter, health and safety. Efforts to provide formal education to street children are not always successful. This project hypothesizes that equipping these children with essential knowledge in an informal but creative learning environment will allow them to live safe and productive lives. The prototype of the creative learning format is based on approaches and tools that have worked with children in other settings and has been modified for street children. …

Complementary Feeding Practices And Their Determinants In Infants And Young Children On Follow Up At A Private Tertiary Hospital In Nairobi, Catherine Muthoni
Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: More than a third of all deaths in children under five years of age worldwide, are linked to maternal and child under-nutrition. Appropriate complementary feeding is one of the interventions with the greatest potential for reduction of nutrition-related diseases and mortalities, yet uptake of the recommended World Health Organisation (WHO) infant and young child feeding practices in Kenya remains low. Despite provision of nutrition education at Aga Khan University Hospital- Nairobi (AKUH-N), both growth faltering and over-weight trends have been observed, pointing to both under- and over-nutrition. Objectives: This study investigated caregivers' knowledge , attitude and practice (KAP) of …

Transportation, Social Support, Family Visitation, And Depression Of Residents In Nursing Homes: A Mixed-Methods Study, Vivian J. Miller
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore transportation between family members in the community to visit their loved ones residing in long-term care nursing homes. This study is presented across three articles. First, a systematic review of the literature investigating barriers to family members visiting their loved ones in nursing homes identified seven barriers to visitation, including transportation access and travel time. These findings laid the foundation for articles two and three, which report results from a larger two-phase mixed-methodological study. The second article, guided by the Social Determinants of Mental Health, is an analysis examining the effect of …
Community Ecology And Population Dynamics Of The Nearshore Marine Fauna In The Middle Atlantic Bight (Usa), Juan Carlos Levesque
Community Ecology And Population Dynamics Of The Nearshore Marine Fauna In The Middle Atlantic Bight (Usa), Juan Carlos Levesque
Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive
Natural resources are among the most valuable commodities on earth. Some natural resources (air, land, and water) are essential for human survival and many often constitute a large percentage of local, regional, and national economies, such as marine resources. Worldwide, marine resources have shaped culture, society, and local, regional, and global economies. Oceanic environmental conditions influence, shape, and control the geographical range, spatial distribution, abundance, and size composition of marine fauna. Thus, marine communities are vulnerable to major changes in the environmental conditions and disturbance (short and long-term), but the response and severity depends on various biological or ecological factors, …

Observations On The Magnetic Iron Oxide Content Of Particulate Matter In The Sahel, Kimberly Belle Tidd
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Atmospheric dust influences many processes throughout the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, most notably the climate, marine productivity, and human health. Recognizing the physicochemical characteristics of dust particulates will assist with monitoring the changes brought on by dust storms, as well as changes that may occur if dust subsides. Munsell soil color analysis was used to identify the degree of weathering at sample collection sites from the Sahel, a climate-sensitive region of North Africa. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to obtain the size, shape, and elemental makeup of individual magnetic metal particulates. Samples examined were collected …
Characterization Of Scleractinian Coral Caspases In Comparison With Human Homologs, Jessica Lynn Tung
Characterization Of Scleractinian Coral Caspases In Comparison With Human Homologs, Jessica Lynn Tung
2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Coral bleaching is an immune response where compromised algal symbionts are expelled from host tissue. Porites astreoides and Orbicella faveolata are model species on opposing ends of the immunity spectrum. Disease-resistant P. astreoides employs adaptive autophagic mechanisms when immunocompromised, while disease-sensitive O. faveolata activates caspase-mediated apoptosis. Presented here is a characterization of caspase homologs found in disease-tolerant P. astreoides (P.ast-3, P.ast-7) and disease-susceptible P. astreoides (O.fav-3a, O.fav-3b). P.ast-7 and O.fav-3a are unusual in that they retain high sequence similarity to human executioner caspases but possess a CARD-like domain characteristic of initiator and inflammatory caspases. Results indicate that P.ast-7 and O.fav-3a …

The Registered Nurse’S Lack Of Knowledge, Practice, And Patient Teaching Of Nutritional Needs, Courtney Walther
2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
There is a lack of registered nurses’ knowledge related to nutritional needs of patients. Furthermore, poor self-care in their own lives regarding healthy eating may lead to inadequate patient education and poorer patient outcomes in managing their health. Barriers identified for RNs include: not having a nutrition course, feeling that patient teaching of healthy eating is of lesser importance, a paucity of time and confidence to do so, or thinking it is the job of a dietician. The purpose of this research is to identify RNs nutritional knowledge and how nurses’ nutritional education and practice affects their teaching and patient …

Body Dissatisfaction And Weight Bias In Children, Megan Janette Jensen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This article reviews the rate of body dissatisfaction and weight bias among young children. It was initially hypothesized that body-image begins much earlier than adolescence, where most interventions take place. Out of fifty articles read on the subject, forty-five peer reviewed articles were included in this review. The findings of these articles were synthesized for a comprehensive review on the topic. Results suggested that weight bias begins around three years of age, while body dissatisfaction begins around age five for girls, and seven for boys. Rates of body dissatisfaction among children were similar to the rate among adolescents, averaging out …

Percussive Behavior In The Southern Resident Killer Whale (Orcinus Orca) Population At Lime Kiln Point State Park, Rylee Jensen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale (Orcinus orca, SRKW) is an iconic species in the Pacific Northwest. Although many ecological aspects of this population have been studied, including population dynamics, genealogy, diet, and habitat-use patterns, why SRKW perform above-surface "percussive" behavior such as breaching, cartwheeling, pectoral fin slapping, tail lobbing, and dorsal fin slapping remains unclear. In the present study, a) individual percussive behavioral data was recorded during the summer of 2016 to evaluate trends by age and sex class, and b) an existing long-term data set on SRKW was analyzed to compare the relationship between the seasonal …
Transcriptomic Analysis Of Honey Bees Exposed To Organosilicone, Matthew Brent Thompson
Transcriptomic Analysis Of Honey Bees Exposed To Organosilicone, Matthew Brent Thompson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Honey bees play an important role in agriculture and the decline of honey bee populations worldwide has generated concern. While the application of pesticides in agricultural settings is often implicated in the deterioration of honey bee population health, pesticide applications contain more than just pesticides; they also contain adjuvants that may have detrimental effects to bee health. One known effect of one type of adjuvant is the suppression of immunity-related genes and consequent increase of viral load in larvae. We investigate the effects of one class of adjuvant, organosilicone surfactants (OSS), on adult honey bee health. In a laboratory based …

Fermentation Of Prebiotics In Whole Food Powders By Probiotic Lactic-Acid Producing Bacterial Strains To Identify Synbiotic Combinations, Michaela Brubaker
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Dietary interventions with probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and prebiotics, complex dietary fibers that promote LAB growth, may favorably shift the gut microbiome to reduce colorectal cancer risk. Our primary hypothesis was that the LAB strains NCFM Lactobacillus acidophilus and HNO 19 Bifidobacterium lactis would thrive in the presence of agave, green banana, black raspberry, baobab fruit, or pomegranate peel whole food powders by fermenting their oligosaccharide (OS) components into lactic acid end products. LAB strains were cultured in media with no carbohydrate, purified OS, or one of the whole food powders. LAB strains cultured with agave appeared to grow …

The Spatial Ecology Of Predator-Prey Interactions: A Case Study Of Yellowstone Elk, Wolves, And Cougars, Michel T. Kohl
The Spatial Ecology Of Predator-Prey Interactions: A Case Study Of Yellowstone Elk, Wolves, And Cougars, Michel T. Kohl
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The loss of large apex predators, and their subsequent reintroduction, has been identified as a substantial driver on the structure and function of ecological communities through behavioral mediated trophic cascades (BMTCs). The reintroduction of wolves (Canis lupus) to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) has served as foundational case study of BMTCs. In our system, it has been suggested that wolves have established a ‘landscape of fear’ in which the primary prey, elk (Cervus elaphus), now avoid risky places, which ultimately led to the recovery of the vegetation community. Although this case is frequently cited as a well-understood …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Louisville, Kentucky has over two dozen active community gardens which are used and maintained by various neighborhoods and organizations. This thesis determines how collaboration and resource sharing manifest in Louisville’s various community gardens. Participant observation was used to select three case study sites and semi-structured interviews were conducted with garden users and managers for each site, and with supporters and funders for Louisville community gardens. I found that Louisville community gardens share three challenges, which are funding, resources, and land ownership. Community garden actors navigate these challenges by exchanging physical resources, shared labor, and knowledge across multiple scales. This thesis …

Eyes In The Field, A Seat At The Table, A Voice At The Ranch : A Study On Optimal Farm Labor Conditions., Christine Wiggins-Romesburg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of human resource development has twin obligations to promote the performance of organizations and the satisfaction and welfare of all workers. Nevertheless, agriculture appears to be an understudied industry in the field, despite this obligation and the potential for suffering experienced by workers performing crop work. This case study sought to understand the process through which a single agricultural operation fosters optimal conditions for workers engaged in labor-intensive crop production. This study found employees experienced better treatment compared to other agricultural operations, and that conditions were rich in both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors were marked by …
Got Mylk?: The Disruptive Possibilities Of Plant Milk, Iselin Gambert
Got Mylk?: The Disruptive Possibilities Of Plant Milk, Iselin Gambert
Brooklyn Law Review
Milk is one of the most ubiquitous and heavily regulated substances on the planet—and perhaps one of the most contested. It is tied closely to notions of purity, health, and femininity, and is seen as so central to human civilization that our own galaxy—the Milky Way—is named after it. But despite its wholesome reputation, milk has long had a sinister side, being bound up with the exploitation of the (human and nonhuman) bodies it comes from and being a symbol of and tool for white dominance and superiority. The word itself, in verb form, means “to exploit.” It is also …

Lactose’S Intolerance: The Role Of Manufacturers’ Rights And Commercial Free Speech In Big Dairy’S Fight To Restrict Use Of The Term “Milk”, Kathleen Justis
Brooklyn Law Review
This note examines the relationship between restrictions on commercial speech and manufacturers’ First Amendment right to describe their products to consumers, with a focus on the DAIRY PRIDE Act. It argues that broad, content-based restrictions of commercial speech, like that proposed in the DAIRY PRIDE Act, likely impose unconstitutional limitations on manufacturers’ First Amendment right to freedom of speech. This note recommends that both Congress and the FDA should refrain from passing a statute or promulgating a regulation like the DAIRY PRIDE Act. Rather, it proposes that adding rules to control the proportions and location of disclaimers on product labels …

BACKGROUND: Risk-appropriate prenatal care has been asserted as a way for the cost-effective delivery of prenatal care. A virtual care model for prenatal care has the potential to provide patient-tailored, risk-appropriate prenatal educational content and may facilitate vital sign and weight monitoring between visits. Previous studies have demonstrated a safe reduction in the frequency of in-person prenatal care visits among low-risk patients but have noted a reduction in patient satisfaction.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of a mobile prenatal care app to facilitate a reduced in-person visit schedule for low-risk pregnancies while maintaining …
