Effects Of A Carbohydrate Hydrogel Beverage On Endurance Cycling Performance And Gastrointestinal Comfort, Harrison R. Toney
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of a novel maltodextrin-fructose hydrogel (MF-H) on cycling performance and gastrointestinal distress symptoms. METHODS: Nine endurance-trained male cyclists completed three experimental trials consisting of a 98-min varied-intensity cycling protocol followed by a performance test of ten consecutive sprint intervals. In a cross-over design, subjects consumed 250 mL of a treatment beverage every 15 min of cycling. The treatments consisted of 78 g . hr-1 of either a) MF-H, b) maltodextrin-fructose (MF), and c) maltodextrin only (MD) All data were assessed using repeated measures ANOVA’s. RESULTS: There were no differences in average sprint power …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if chocolate milk (CM) consumption after high-intensity cycling exercise affects post-exercise recovery and subsequent exercise performance in youth cyclists, compared to a carbohydrate-only (CHO) and a placebo (PL) beverage. Methods: Eight youth cyclists (15-18 y, VO2peak = 61.8 ± 7.7 mL·kg-1·min-1) performed an exercise/recovery protocol consisting of 2 bouts of exercise, on 3 separate occasions, in a randomly counterbalanced crossover design. The first exercise bout (EX1) consisted of 30 min of constant-load cycling (40-60% Wmax), and 60 min of high-intensity intervals (alternating 2 min …
A Collective Case Study Of The Personal Practice And Meanings Of Mindfulness To Music Educators, Jennifer M. Hoye
A Collective Case Study Of The Personal Practice And Meanings Of Mindfulness To Music Educators, Jennifer M. Hoye
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The practice of mindfulness, defined as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 4), may be an effective form of self-care for music educators suffering from stress. Stressors that music educators may encounter in their professional lives include such issues as role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, the underutilization of skills, resource inadequacy, non-participation, professional isolation, and Music Performance Anxiety (Scheib, 2003; Sindberg, 2011; Kenny, Davis, & Oates, 2004; Kenny & Osborne, 2006). The purpose of this collective case study was to explore the personal mindfulness practices of the three …

The Impact Of Peer-Led Diabetes Education: A Quasi Pre Post Experimental Study, Stacey Bell Sloas
Student Theses and Dissertations
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness costing over $300 billion per year in the United States with an estimated 100 million individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Complications due to diabetes place individuals at increased risk for heart attack, stroke, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, disability, and early death. Education has been shown to be effective in improving health behaviors that decrease complications due to diabetes. Common risk factors for development of diabetes are modifiable behaviors such as sedentary lifestyle and obesity. A peer-led approach to diabetes education has the potential to overcome multiple barriers to receiving education. Peer-led diabetes education …
Assessing The Contribution Of Multiple Ascorbate Pathways To Abiotic Stress Tolerance Using Phenomic Approaches, Lucia Margarita Acosta Gamboa
Assessing The Contribution Of Multiple Ascorbate Pathways To Abiotic Stress Tolerance Using Phenomic Approaches, Lucia Margarita Acosta Gamboa
Student Theses and Dissertations
L-Ascorbic acid (AsA, vitamin C) is an essential molecule that humans cannot synthesize; therefore, it must be acquired through dietary sources. Vitamin C has an important role in protecting organelles and cells against the damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). In plants, AsA is synthesized by a complex metabolic network. Although progress has been made in the characterization of genes involved in some of these pathways, there is a gap in understanding which pathway(s) is/are activated in response to different stresses. The long term goal of this project is to assess the contribution of multiple ascorbate pathways to abiotic …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Both genetic and lifestyle factors contribute to an individual's disease risk, suggesting a multi-omic approach is essential for personalized prevention. Studies have examined the effectiveness of lifestyle coaching on clinical outcomes, however, little is known about the impact of genetic predisposition on the response to lifestyle coaching. Here we report on the results of a real-world observational study in 2531 participants enrolled in a commercial "Scientific Wellness" program, which combines multi-omic data with personalized, telephonic lifestyle coaching. Specifically, we examined: 1) the impact of this program on 55 clinical markers and 2) the effect of genetic predisposition on these clinical …

The Correlation Between Obesity, Food Addiction, Anxiety & Depression, Ayham Khrais, Adarsh K. Gupta
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Obesity is a multifaceted disease with physiological, psychological and social influences. While physiological factors, such as basal metabolic rate, can influence an individual’s BMI (Body Mass Index), obesity is primarily determined by behavior: excess food intake and a sedentary lifestyle greatly contribute to weight gain. An individual’s behavior is influenced by many factors, including their desires, perceptions, and social pressures. Therefore, psychological conditions can greatly impact an individual’s eating habits, thereby affecting that person’s BMI. This endeavor involved exploration of the potential effects of food addiction, anxiety, and depression on obesity. A survey consisting of an amalgamation of the Yale …

Cultivating The Sustainably Gendered Self, Patrick Kenny
Cultivating The Sustainably Gendered Self, Patrick Kenny
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Traditional gender roles, and the extent to which they are rigidly enforced in a social context, can limit individual and group welfare and are linked to serious social issues such as mass-incarceration, domestic abuse, gang-participation, female genital mutilation, and honor killings (Abramsky et al., 2011; Hackett, 2011). This chapter focuses on the social construct of gender and the ways in which individual and societal beliefs about gender impact the well-being of the global community. A three-pronged approach (individual psychotherapy, group interventions, and education policy) offers a way to address the myriad gender-based challenges present in a number of cultures worldwide. …

Improving nutritional status during adolescence is an opportunity to improve the lives of this generation and the next. Estimating the burden of malnutrition at a population level is fundamental to targeting interventions and measuring progress over time, and for adolescents, we usually depend on survey data and the 2007 WHO Growth Reference to do so. There is substantial risk of misguided conclusions regarding adolescent prevalence estimates, however, when underlying methodological limitations of the indicators and reference are not adequately considered. We use national prevalence estimates among girls and young women 10-22 y of age from the 2014 State of Food …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
A pediatric academic medical center identified a need for additional nursing resources for the acute care areas due to fluctuating census and acuity. A lack of a robust pool of experienced nurses in this geographical area led us to explore innovative options. A team of nursing professional development (NPD) specialists were consulted to develop a new graduate acute care float team onboarding program. Although these new graduate nurses would participate in a successful, evidence-based, and validated 12-month RN Residency Program, the complexities of gaining competence in hematology/oncology, pediatric medicine, and surgical neurosciences created unique challenges. The NPD specialists began by …
