The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Physical Literacy In Children, Emma Zuk May 2019

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Physical Literacy In Children, Emma Zuk

Master's Theses

Context: Physical literacy is a growing concept throughout the United States. In order to be physically active, children must develop physical literacy, which is the competency to control their body, and the confidence and motivation to be active. Socioeconomic status of children’s living communities may influence opportunities for physical activity and motor development, but this has not been examined in relation to physical literacy in the United States. The purpose of this study was to evaluate physical literacy competency between a low-resourced community and a high-resourced community. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to compare children between high-resourced (HIGH) …

Impact Of Fungiform Papillae Count On Taste Perception And Different Methods Of Taste Assessment And Their Clinical Applications: A Comprehensive Review, Asim M. Khan, Saqib Ali, Veerankutty J. Muhaseena, Muhamood, Maryam F. Haqh

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Fungiform papillae are raised lingual structures which contain taste buds and thus play an important role in taste perception. These structures vary in number due to their relative sensitivity to a range of systemic and local factors which affect the dorsum of the tongue. Taste sensation can be measured using both chemical and electrical methods; however, the number of fungiform papillae has a direct effect on chemogustometric and electrogustometric values during evaluation. This review provides a general overview of fungiform papillae, their quantification methods and the various factors which may affect these structures. In addition, numerous methods of recording taste …

Symbiosis Between Chamaecrista Fasciculata And Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria: A Review, Victoria Q. Nguyen May 2019

Symbiosis Between Chamaecrista Fasciculata And Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria: A Review, Victoria Q. Nguyen

Honors Thesis

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria reside in nodules on roots of legumes. Within these nodules, they convert nitrogen gas to ammonia, a bioavailable form of nitrogen that the plant can use for nutrition. Although the vast majority of legumes form nodules, members of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily generally do not nodulate and are instead characterized by bacteria that remain in the infection thread during nitrogen fixation. As one of the few genera within this subfamily capable of nodulation, Chamaecrista p resents a rare opportunity to study the symbiosis between primitive legumes and nitrogen fixing bacteria. Observing nitrogen fixation in Chamaecrista allows for a greater …

Analysis Of Tobacco Use Vital Sign Assessment, Latonya King May 2019

Analysis Of Tobacco Use Vital Sign Assessment, Latonya King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a massive problem of tobacco-related cancer outcomes in patients that are affected by race and ethnicity. Although this is a known disparity, there continues to be a gap in care for asking patients if they use tobacco and in advising and assisting them in making a quit attempt. Health information technology requirements and meaningful use regulations require the utilization of systematic electronic documentation. In order to improve and support tobacco use screening, systematic tobacco use assessment and documentation are essential. There is a widespread belief that adding screening for tobacco use to the vital sign assessment will lead …

The Effects Of Moderate Versus Variable High Intensity Cycling On Metabolic Responses During Recovery, Matthew Wolfe, Jenna Thompson, Justin Guilkey

Honors Theses

PURPOSE: Examine oxygen consumption (VO2), energy expenditure and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) during recovery following moderate-intensity exercise (MIE) and variable high intensity exercise (VIE) in healthy adults. METHODS: The two conditions were randomized and performed on separate days fasted. Both protocols commenced after 15-min seated rest. MIE protocol was at 40% of maximal work rate (WRmax). VIE consisted of sixteen 10-sec supramaximal sprints (120% WRmax), sixteen 20-sec high intensity bouts (60% WRmax) and low-intensity recovery (20% WRmax) interspersed throughout the exercise. Total duration and work were matched. There was 75 minutes of seated recovery. VO2 and RER were recorded during …

Effects Of Foam Rolling On Range Of Motion And Vertical Jump Height, Giovanna Leone, Chad Smith May 2019

Effects Of Foam Rolling On Range Of Motion And Vertical Jump Height, Giovanna Leone, Chad Smith

Honors Theses

Static stretching has been shown to elicit an acute improvement in range of motion (ROM) in both the contralateral and ipsilateral limb. However, static stretching has also been shown to impair performance. Foam rolling has been used in clinical settings as well as by the general population to increase ROM without impairing performance. To date, there is limited research evaluating the effect of foam rolling on the contralateral limb. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of foam rolling on ROM and single-leg drop jump performance in the foam rolled and non-foam rolled legs. The results …

Determining The Pathological Effects Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Peripheral Neuropathy Via Spinal And Peripheral Immune Mechanisms, Joshua J. Sanchez May 2019

Determining The Pathological Effects Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Peripheral Neuropathy Via Spinal And Peripheral Immune Mechanisms, Joshua J. Sanchez

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Previous studies have suggested that children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) display hypersensitivity to light touch. In support of this notion, we have demonstrated that applying a chronic constriction injury (CCI) to the sciatic nerve of rats that have prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) results in heightened sensitivity to light touch, clinically termed allodynia. These observations coincided with heightened glial activation and enhanced peripheral immune reactivity. Considering allodynia is known to be mediated by both peripheral immune responses and spinal glial activation, it is reasonable to speculate that allodynia following PAE may be mediated through an alteration of immune reactivity. …

The Effect Of Music And Movement Interventions On Elementary Students’ Classroom Transition Times And Engagement, Bryanna Susann Hall May 2019

The Effect Of Music And Movement Interventions On Elementary Students’ Classroom Transition Times And Engagement, Bryanna Susann Hall

Honors Theses

In recent years, educational mandates such as those established by the No Child Left Behind Act have placed increased pressure on school administrators and faculty to focus a large portion of their resources on improving students’ standardized test scores. As a result, many teachers are searching for ways to increase instructional time, yet during an already chaotic school day, that is not such an easy task (Heafner, Lipscomb, & Rock, 2006). Therefore, this study examined possible solutions to this issue that would benefit both students and teachers through the implementation of various music and movement interventions. The research occurred over …

The Efficacy Of An Educational Intervention To Improve Low Influenza Vaccination Rates Among Federal Health Care Workers, Cynthia Berfect-Shelby May 2019

The Efficacy Of An Educational Intervention To Improve Low Influenza Vaccination Rates Among Federal Health Care Workers, Cynthia Berfect-Shelby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Influenza is a preventable communicable illness that has a significant impact on people of all ages. In 2018 it was estimated that 80,000 people died of influenza-related illnesses. Infants and elderly people are among the most vulnerable populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Healthy People 2020 recommend that health care facilities have a 90% vaccination rate. Despite the recommendations and a mandatory directive, many facilities within the Veterans Health Administration struggle to reach influenza vaccination rates above 60%. Pender’s health promotion model was used as the theoretical framework to explore the reasons why health care workers refuse …

See The Forest For The Leaves: Foliar Fungal Community Composition And Volatile Organic Compound Production, Joshua Copeland May 2019

See The Forest For The Leaves: Foliar Fungal Community Composition And Volatile Organic Compound Production, Joshua Copeland

Master's Theses

Endophytes are microbes that live within plants without causing detectable illness. These microorganisms can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), airborne signaling molecules that can significantly affect plant growth. Despite the prevalence of endophytes and their VOCs, little is known about these factors important to plant health. With this in mind I isolated fungal endophytes from leaves of Populus trichocarpa and Populus fremontii, tree species with economic and environmental uses, to determine if endophyte communities are reserved between the closely related tree species and over seasons. Surface sterilized leaf fragments were plated onto malt extract agar and the resulting fungi were …

A Study Investigating Behavior Economics And Parent Engagement To Impact The Transition To Kindergarten, Sarah Hough, Laura Carafiello May 2019

A Study Investigating Behavior Economics And Parent Engagement To Impact The Transition To Kindergarten, Sarah Hough, Laura Carafiello

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The United States is in the bottom quartile of formally enrolled preschoolers in the developed countries. Not every student receives an equitable preschool experience and as a result, kindergarten classrooms contain a wide range of learners. One way to offset the transition time would be to transform enrollment procedures. How schools utilize the data contained on kindergarten enrollment registrations in the spring could help level the playing field for at risk students. Handing a parent a list of ways to get ready for kindergarten is not enough. One method is through the use of behavior economics and technology. This research …

The Implementation Of A Behavioral Intervention Program In Obese Elderly Patients, Zandra Brown May 2019

The Implementation Of A Behavioral Intervention Program In Obese Elderly Patients, Zandra Brown

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity is increasing in American and patients are living longer. Research suggests that behavioral lifestyle interventions help optimize elderly patient’s health and improve their quality of life. A successful behavioral weight loss program had been in place in one clinic within a large healthcare organization. The need at another metropolitan Midwest location seemed even greater due to having a patient population consisting of elderly, demographics, obesity trends, and high rates of obesity linked morbidities such a diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Thirteen elderly obese patients with ages ranging from 65-75 years old were enrolled in an …

Brand Strength Evaluation Of Goodwill-West Texas, Cailyn Byrd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this evaluation is to identify the ways in which Goodwill-West Texas could improve their marketing efforts in order to increase service delivery and community support. Goodwill’s career center is underperforming in comparison to other Goodwill career centers in similar communities. Two surveys were used to assess the beliefs and attitudes towards Goodwill held by members of the community who are often in contact with Goodwill-West Texas’s target market. Participants were more likely to know about Goodwill’s retail sales rather than their social service efforts. This could be contributing to Goodwill-West Texas’s service delivery, but more research is …
