Development Of A Community Health Nursing Course Grounded In Nightingale's Framework, Susan Calhoun Jun 2019

Development Of A Community Health Nursing Course Grounded In Nightingale's Framework, Susan Calhoun

Dissertations

The lack of theory in Community Health Nursing (CHN) education is significant. Nightingale's theory, with its emphasis on environmental effects on health, could guide CHN, and teaching her theory's points in CHN courses could better prepare future nurses to provide care. The purpose of this scholarly practice project was to learn nursing students' perceptions of using the Nightingale Environmental Adaptation Theory of Nursing Practice (NEATNP) in their community health nursing education experience, and how this helped them to understand the importance of theory in practice. The objective of this scholarly practice project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a baccalaureate …

Road Deicing Salt Effects On The Function And Structure Of Forested Wetlands In Southern New England, Samantha Walker Jun 2019

Road Deicing Salt Effects On The Function And Structure Of Forested Wetlands In Southern New England, Samantha Walker

Master's Theses

Forested wetlands are ubiquitous throughout New England providing critical ecosystem services however; road deicing salt use (NaCl) threaten their ecosystem structure and function. To investigate impacts, we employed a seed bank study and a multi-site field survey of forested wetlands. We collected soils and conducted a full factorial seed bank experiment to test how road salt concentration (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 ppt), frequency of salt exposure (pulse, constant) and water level (surface, 2 cm below surface) affected seedling responses. We identified a salinity threshold of 1-4 ppt that reduced seed bank responses. We surveyed nine road-adjacent red maple …

Unraveling The Neurogenin/Ngn-1 Gene Regulatory Network Of C. Elegans Using Classical Genetics And Comparative Transcriptomics, Elyse Christensen

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Proper nervous system development is required for an organism’s survival and function. Defects in neurogenesis have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. Understanding the gene regulatory networks that orchestrate neural development, specifically cascades of proneural transcription factors, can better elucidate which genes are most essential in governing early neurogenesis. Neurogenins are a family of such factors that are both sufficient and necessary for the development of neural sub-types in mice, primarily through the regulation of other factors, particularly NeuroD. The objective of this study was to evaluate previously established regulatory targets of neurogenin(ngn-1 …

Measuring And Understanding Food Accessibility In The Tampa Bay Area, Bailey I. Glover Jun 2019

Measuring And Understanding Food Accessibility In The Tampa Bay Area, Bailey I. Glover

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the Tampa Bay region, increasing population and changing demographics have begun to alter the characteristics of established neighborhoods. An increase in suburban growth has triggered a shift in the location and profitability of food establishments in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods. Supermarket closures have garnered attention from public health officials who are concerned with the overall availability of fresh food throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Unfortunately, there has been little research surrounding the quality of food sold at establishments in both the Tampa Bay region and abroad. Instead, many geographic studies have chosen to group both fresh and prepared food establishments …

Evaluation Of Clinical Outcomes In An Interdisciplinary Abdominal Pain Clinic: A Retrospective, Exploratory Review., Amanda D. Deacy, Craig A. Friesen, Vincent S. Staggs, Jennifer Verrill Schurman

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Background: Pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common and well-accepted to be etiologically complex in terms of the contribution of biological, psychological, and social factors to symptom presentations. Nonetheless, despite its documented benefits, interdisciplinary treatment, designed to address all of these factors, for pediatric FGIDs remains rare. The current study hypothesized that the majority of pediatric patients seen in an interdisciplinary abdominal pain clinic (APC) would demonstrate clinical resolution of symptoms during the study period and that specific psychosocial variables would be significantly predictive of GI symptom improvement.

Aim: To evaluate outcomes with interdisciplinary treatment in pediatric patients with pain-related …

Carlson, Suneeta Godbole, Loki Natarajan, Aaron Hipp, Karen Glanz, Jonathan Mitchell, Francine Laden, Peter James, Jacqueline Kerr

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

OBJECTIVES: Independently, physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep are related to the development and progression of chronic diseases. Less is known about how rest-activity behaviors cluster within individuals and how rest-activity behavior profiles relate to health. In this study we aimed to investigate if adult women cluster into profiles based on how they accumulate rest-activity behavior (including accelerometer-measured PA, SB, and sleep), and if participant characteristics and health outcomes differ by profile membership.

METHODS: A convenience sample of 372 women (mean age 55.38 + 10.16) were recruited from four US cities. Participants wore ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometers on the …

The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Subtropical Intertidal Microbial Mats, Bert D. Anderson Jun 2019

The Distribution And Biogeochemistry Of Subtropical Intertidal Microbial Mats, Bert D. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microbial mats have played an important role in the carbon (C) and nutrient cycles since the Archean Eon and modern mats are important contributors to the biogeochemistry of intertidal wetlands. Microbial mats are flat assemblages of microbes that are currently found in many unvegetated habitats globally. Intertidal salt pans are a common habitat for microbial mats, however little is known about the distribution of microbial mats within the intertidal landscape. Understanding the spatial distribution of microbial mats is critical to developing quantitative estimates of the impacts of microbial mats on their ecosystems. We photographically measured the presence and density of …

Habitat Suitability Index Model Of The Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pratensis) In West-Central Florida, Courtney E. Buck

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Florida Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis pratensis) is a state threatened endemic subspecies of the Sandhill Crane (Nesbitt & Tacha, 1997). With a population that was estimated at a maximum of 5,000 individuals in 2003 (Nesbitt & Hatchitt, 2008), it is imperative to identify potentially viable habitats, as Florida is rapidly developing. This research develops a Habitat Suitability Index model to determine unsuitable to optimally suitable habitat locations throughout west-central Florida. To do so, six suitability variables based on the crane’s life history were evaluated: Potential nesting area, immediate nesting area, wetland coverage, foraging area, brooding area, and road proximity. …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of The Parasitic Nematode Aplectana Hamatospicula On The Performance And Behavior Of Cuban Treefrogs (Osteopilus Septentrionalis), Kerri Surbaugh Jun 2019

An Investigation Of The Effects Of The Parasitic Nematode Aplectana Hamatospicula On The Performance And Behavior Of Cuban Treefrogs (Osteopilus Septentrionalis), Kerri Surbaugh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parasitic infections are ubiquitous in nature, and host-parasite dynamics can have powerful effects on wildlife populations. Many species have evolved behavioral responses to infection that can help mitigate damage from parasites. Anorexia is a common response to infection observed throughout the animal kingdom. Reducing nutrient intake can help shift host resources from digestion to immunity, as well as limit resources available to parasites. Reduced feeding can weaken the host, but in some host-parasite interactions, this cost is less than that of maintaining an infection. Here, I describe an experiment aimed to explore the effects of the parasitic nematode Aplectana hamatospicula …

Promoting L2 Idiomatic Competence Among Chinese College Students Via Wechat, Zhengjie Li Jun 2019

Promoting L2 Idiomatic Competence Among Chinese College Students Via Wechat, Zhengjie Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many second language (L2) scholars acknowledge that L2 idioms play a critical role in reading development as well as in communicative competence for L2 learners (Arnaud & Savignon, 1997; Barfield & Gyllstad, 2009; Conklin & Schmitt, 2008; Howarth, 1998; Liontas, 2017; Littlemore, Chen, Koester, & Barnden, 2011). Echoing the current trends of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), much research has been done to underscore how L2 idiom learning can be infused with instructional technologies to promote L2 learners’ idiomatic competence (see Luk & Ng, 1998; Nakata, 2011; Yang & Xie, 2013). However, what remains underexplored is the ways that L2 …

Lectio Divina: A Call For Salah & Poetic Being, Momina A. Khan Jun 2019

Lectio Divina: A Call For Salah & Poetic Being, Momina A. Khan

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

I reflect back on the ARTS Pre-Conference 2017 of the Canadian Society for Studies in Education. It was a day full of non-linear knowledge exchanges, conversations, creations, contemplation and arts-based activities. Collaborators dwelled in, engaged, and emerged together spiritually, poetically, and musically to rekindle their learning, coexistence and mystical understandings. I was in my fasting state with dry mouth, hungry stomach, and thirsty soul combined with contemplative sessions, plus my scholarly and poetic inspirations in the flesh. It was purely an epoch of unbridled spirit tenderly wrapped in creative and contemplative ways of being present in the moment, with the …
