An Examination Into The Attitudes Of Girls Towards Physical Activity And Performance In Aerobic Capacity, Cynthia Dawn Fairey Jul 2019

An Examination Into The Attitudes Of Girls Towards Physical Activity And Performance In Aerobic Capacity, Cynthia Dawn Fairey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Over the last 30 years, physical activity among adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 has continued to decline, and the risk of morbidity associated with sedentary living has increased (CDC, 2017). Furthermore, research has identified females as being at greater risk of morbidity because they are opting out of physical activity at twice the rate of boys and not getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity (NPAP, 2016). Many girls are avoiding physical education classes, where the concepts of health-related fitness, the development of skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities, and …

Healthy aging is the prolonging of optimal wellbeing during the progressive decline in physiological functions that are necessary for survival. Two important components of aging include an individual’s genetic makeup and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise. Genetic factors are responsible for the functional physiology of the body including cell maintenance, metabolism and apoptosis. The individual effects of genes and lifestyle choices on aging are reported mainly in Caucasian populations, with very limited studies in minority populations. In this review, we included the effects of genes and environment and the interaction between them on aging in Hispanic population in …

Infection can cause hosts to drastically alter their investment in key life‐history traits of reproduction and defence. Infected individuals are expected to increase investment in defence (e.g., by increasing immune function) and, due to trade‐offs, investment in other traits (e.g., current reproduction) should decrease. However, the terminal investment hypothesis postulates that decreased lifespan due to infection and the associated reduction in the expectation for future offspring will favour increased investment towards current reproduction. Variation in intrinsic condition will likely influence shifts in reproductive investment post‐infection, but this is often not considered in such assessments. For example, the extent of inbreeding …

Genetic Risk Score In Diabetes Associated With Chronic Pancreatitis Versus Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Andres Gelrud Jul 2019

Genetic Risk Score In Diabetes Associated With Chronic Pancreatitis Versus Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Andres Gelrud

All Publications

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complication of chronic pancreatitis (CP). Whether pancreatogenic diabetes associated with CP-DM represents a discrete pathophysiologic entity from type 2 DM (T2DM) remains uncertain. Addressing this question is needed for development of specific measures to manage CP-DM. We approached this question from a unique standpoint, hypothesizing that if CP-DM and T2DM are separate disorders, they should be genetically distinct. To test this hypothesis, we sought to determine whether a genetic risk score (GRS) based on validated single nucleotide polymorphisms for T2DM could distinguish between groups with CP-DM and T2DM.

Methods: We used 60 T2DM single …

The Impact Of Framing On Acceptance Of Cultured Meat, Christopher Bryant, Courtney Dillard Jul 2019

The Impact Of Framing On Acceptance Of Cultured Meat, Christopher Bryant, Courtney Dillard

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cultured meat can be produced from growing animal cells in-vitro rather than as part of a living animal. This technology has the potential to address several of the major ethical, environmental, and public health concerns associated with conventional meat production. However, research has highlighted some consumer uncertainty regarding the concept. Although several studies have examined the media coverage of this new food technology, research linking different frames to differences in consumer attitudes is lacking. In an experimental study, we expose U.S. adults (n = 480) to one of three different frames on cultured meat: “societal benefits,” “high tech,” and “same …

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Elemental hyperaccumulation protects plants from many aboveground herbivores. Little is known about effects of hyperaccumulation on belowground herbivores or their ecological interactions. To examine effects of plant selenium (Se) hyperaccumulation on nematode root herbivory, we investigated spatial distribution and speciation of Se in hyperaccumulator roots using X-ray microprobe analysis, and effects of root Se concentration on root-associated nematode communities. Perennial hyperaccumulators Stanleya pinnata and Astragalus bisulcatus, collected from a natural seleniferous grassland contained 100–1500 mg Se kg−1 root dry weight (DW). Selenium was concentrated in the cortex and epidermis of hyperaccumulator roots, with lower levels in the stele. The …

Catheter-associated asymptomatic bacteriuria (CAABU) is frequent in intensive care units (ICUs) and contributes to the routine use of antibiotics and to antibiotic-resistant infections. While nurses are responsible for the implementation of CAABU-prevention guidelines, variability in how individual nurses contribute to CAABU-free rates in ICUs has not been previously explored. This study’s objective was to examine the variability in CAABU-free outcomes of individual ICU nurses. This observational cross-sectional study used shift-level nurse-patient data from the electronic health records from two ICUs in a tertiary medical center in the US between July 2015 and June 2016. We included all adult (18+) catheterized …

Testing Allostatic Load Factor Structures Among Adolescents: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Amanda L. King, Mauricio Garnier-Villarreal, Amanda M. Simanak, Norah L. Johnson

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives

Allostatic load (AL) represents cumulative biological “wear and tear” that results from chronic stress exposure over time, ultimately increasing risk for chronic disease. A consensus is lacking regarding the best operationalization of AL, particularly for younger, less studied populations. The purpose of this study was to test multiple hypothesized factor structures for AL to determine the best measurement approach for adolescents.

Methods

We analyzed biologic data for 1900 adolescents aged 12‐18 from four waves (2003‐2010) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. AL indicator variables included cardiovascular (systolic BP, creatinine), metabolic (HDL, LDL, triglycerides, insulin, fasting glucose, HA1C, …

Clathrin-Containing Adhesion Complexes, John G. Lock, Francesco Baschieri, Matthew C. Jones, Jd Humphries, Guillaume Montagnac, Staffan Strömblad, Mj Humphries

Peninsula Medical School

An understanding of the mechanisms whereby cell adhesion complexes (ACs) relay signals bidirectionally across the plasma membrane is necessary to interpret the role of adhesion in regulating migration, differentiation, and growth. A range of AC types has been defined, but to date all have similar compositions and are dependent on a connection to the actin cytoskeleton. Recently, a new class of AC has been reported that normally lacks association with both the cytoskeleton and integrin-associated adhesome components, but is rich in components of the clathrin-mediated endocytosis machinery. The characterization of this new type of adhesion structure, which is emphasized by …

Uncertainty Associated With The Leaching Of Aerosol Filters For The Determination Of Metals In Aerosol Particulate Matter Using Collision/Reaction Cell Icp-Ms Detection, Robert Clough, Maeve C. Lohan, Simon J. Ussher, Malcolm Nimmo, Paul J. Worsfold

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. High quality observational data with a firm uncertainty assessment are essential for the proper validation of biogeochemical models for trace metals such as iron. Typically, concentrations of these metals are very low in oceanic waters (nM and sub nM) and ICP-MS is therefore a favoured technique for quantitative analysis. Uncertainties in the measurement step are generally well constrained, even at sub-nM concentrations. However, the measurement step is only part of the overall procedure. For the determination of trace metal solubilities from aerosols in the surface ocean, aerosol collection on a filter paper followed by a leaching …

Development, Validation, And Testing Of The Eating And Food Literacy Behaviors Questionnaire With Young Adult University Students, Kwadernica Rhea

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Eating and Food Literacy Behaviors Questionnaire (EFLBQ) was developed, and its validity, reliability, and ability to measure construct changes was established. Items related to the originally proposed domains of food literacy were included in the initial questionnaire, however five, new components were discovered. The second version of the EFLBQ was tested with 257 young adult university students using exploratory factor analysis, and a five-factor model (R2=57.4%) was returned. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated (health and nutrition=0.89, taste=0.72, food preparation=0.77, planning /decision-making=0.64, and convenience=0.63). A confirmatory factor analysis, with 923 new responses provided evidence of an adequate fit …

Effects Of Virus Infection And Volatiles On Aphid Virus Vector Behavior On Sweetpotato, John Lawrence Dryburgh Jul 2019

Effects Of Virus Infection And Volatiles On Aphid Virus Vector Behavior On Sweetpotato, John Lawrence Dryburgh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sweetpotato is affected by a wide variety of viruses worldwide, which can cause yield losses of up to 90%. Many of these viruses are transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner. Non-persistent viruses are acquired and transmitted within minutes, and thus conventional control, such as insecticides, are ineffective. Altering aphid movement and feeding behavior may affect the rate of virus transmission. One potential method to alter aphid behavior is volatile organic compounds (VOC), including volatiles emitted by virus infected plants, plant hormones, and commercial control agents. Aphid movement near sweetpotato fields was monitored to determine trends throughout the growing season. …

In Vitro And In Vivo (Mouse Model) Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Probiotic Bacteria Lactobacillus Casei And Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Incorporated In Tomato Juice, Bennett Atta Dzandu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fruit and vegetable production in Ghana were estimated at 371,811 tons in 2017 with tomatoes ranked among the top four most cultivated vegetables. The majority of the production goes to waste due to spoilage and lack of processing. Probiotics have recently gained much attention owing to claims about their potential health benefits. However, the inability of certain probiotics to survive gastric conditions remain a potential setback. Tomatoes can be processed into value added products including those fortified with probiotics. Such value-added products can be used as protectant for the delivery of probiotics to improve gut health. The objective of this …
