Condition Bias Of Decoy‐Harvested Light Geese During The Conservation Order, Drew N. Fowler, Elisabeth B. Webb, Mark P. Vrtiska
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Evidence that decoy harvest techniques primarily remove individuals of poorer body condition is well established in short‐lived duck species; however, there is limited support for condition bias in longer‐lived waterfowl species, such as geese, where decoy harvest is considered primarily additive because of their high natural survival rates. We evaluated support for the harvest condition bias hypothesis of 2 long‐lived waterfowl species, the lesser snow goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross’s goose (Anser rossii). We used proximate analysis to quantify lipid and protein content of lesser snow and Ross’s geese collected during the Light Goose Conservation Order (LGCO) in 2015 …

Milk Oligopeptide Inhibition Of (Α)-Tocopherol Fortified Linoleic Acid Oxidation, Haina Yuan, Jinyan Gong, Kun Tang, Jinge Huang, Gongnian Xiao, Jianmin Lv
Biological Engineering Student Research
This study investigated the effect of milk oligopeptides and (α)-tocopherol on inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation using Fe2+-vitamin C induced linoleic acid oxidation model through analysis of malondialdehyde, peroxide value, and conjugated diene and triene in the model. The alteration of milk oligopeptides maximal absorption wavelength, fluorescent feature, and secondary structure were further investigated to elucidate the interactions between milk oligopeptide and (α)-tocopherol that altered the inhibitory effect of linoleic acid oxidation. Results showed that Pro-Tyr-Tyr-Ala-Lys (PYYAK) and Ile-Pro-Ile-Gln-Tyr (IPIQY) with (α)-tocopherol significantly inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid and reduced the formation of malondialdehyde by 38% and …

Book Review: Paradigms Of International Human Rights, By Aaron Xavier Fellmeth, Eric Freeman
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Aaron Xavier Fellmeth's Paradigms of International Human Rights Law makes an important contribution to the scholarship on international human rights law (IHRL). In the introduction, Fellmeth begins by noting that previous scholarly literature on IHRL has often focused on the content and enforceability of human rights, but that the broader structure and framing of human rights has been undertheorized. With that in mind, Fellmeth identifies that the first purpose of his book “is to begin a structural critique of some of [the] systemic features of IHRL.” The second purpose is “to make some progress in bridging moral theory with legal …

A Challenging Case Of Spontaneous Bacterial Empyema In A Cirrhotic Patient, Saad Emhmed Ali, Olalekan Akanbi, Macy Godman, Mohanad Soliman, Wesam M. Frandah, Karim Benrajab
Internal Medicine
Spontaneous Bacterial Empyema (SBEM) is distinguished as a primary infection of pre-existing hepatic hydrothorax in the absence of cardiopulmonary or pleural disease. It is an under-recognized complication of cirrhosis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The diagnosis requires chest imaging to rule out underlying pneumonia as an etiology; a diagnostic thoracentesis is crucial to make the diagnosis and should be obtained in any patient with pleural effusion and evidence of infection. Expeditious administration of antibiotics is essential to ameliorate the outcome. We present an interesting case of spontaneous bacterial empyema in a cirrhotic patient with hepatic hydrothorax.

Coffee production is a global industry valued at approximately 173 billion US dollars. One of the main challenges facing coffee production is the management of the coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei, which is considered the primary arthropod pest of coffee worldwide. Current control strategies are inefficient for CBB management. Although biotechnological alternatives, including RNA interference (RNAi), have been proposed in recent years to control insect pests, characterizing the genetics of the target pest is essential for the successful application of these emerging technologies. In this study, we employed RNA-seq to obtain the transcriptome of three developmental stages of the …

What Is Known About The Nutritional Intake Of Women During Pregnancy Following Bariatric Surgery? A Scoping Review, Kate Maslin, Alison James, Anne Brown, Annick Bogaerts, Jill Shawe
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Optimising the diet and weight of women prior to and during pregnancy is of paramount importance to both maternal and offspring health. In women who become pregnant after bariatric surgery, evidence suggests a better overall obstetric outcome in comparison to women with severe obesity managed conservatively. Historically, most studies in this population group have monitored supplement adherence or serum concentrations of micronutrients, rather than dietary intake. The aim of this study was to synthesise current knowledge of the dietary intake of women during pregnancy following bariatric surgery. A systematic search of search engines was conducted using the following databases: MEDLINE, …

Silicon Fertilization In Rice And Wheat: Dynamics With Trace Elements And Effect Of Silicate Slag Granular Size On The Release Pattern Of Monosilicic Acid In Soil, Wooiklee S. Paye
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Studies were conducted to evaluate the impact of silicon (Si) fertilization on the uptake of harmful trace elements in Louisiana rice production system, and document the effect of silicate slag granular size on its ability to supply Si in wheat. The influence of silicate slag and lime on the uptake and translocation of harmful trace elements in rice grain was determined. Results showed that both slag and lime had similar effects on pH at five of the nine sites investigated. Soil Si was significantly (P <0.001) increased with application of silicate slag at all sites. Lime and silicate slag had no effect on the concentration of trace elements in soil. However, increasing Si rates were negatively correlated with arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) concentration in rice grain. The release pattern of monosilicic acid (H4SiO4) from wollastonite and silicate slag was compared in a wheat greenhouse …0.001)>

Application Of Active And Edible Films Of Sodium Caseinate To Extend The Shelf-Life Of Argentine Pategrás Cheese, Brenda S. Álvarez, Natalia Damiani, Marina Czerner, Josefa F. Martucci, Liesel B. Gende
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Argentine Pategrás cheese is one of the most popular types of cheese in Argentina. The main spoilage causes in these products are microbiological contamination and lipid rancidity. Semi-hard cheeses are usually covered with a paraffin wax that favors its preservation. When pieces are stored, cutting faces must be protected to prevent desiccation and contamination. Active biodegradable films are an alternative to the traditional materials, in particular, casein-based edible films are attractive for food applications. In the present work, active films of sodium caseinate with oregano (Origanum vulgare) and laurel (Laurus nobilis) essential oils were produced for …
