Estimated Cardiorespiratory Fitness Is Associated With Reported Depression In College Students, Sharon Jalene, Jennifer Pharr, Guogen Shan, Brach Poston
Integrated Health Sciences Faculty Research
Depression is a serious but treatable health issue that affects college students at an alarming rate. Improved cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) decreases depression risk and severity but this relationship has not been fully evaluated in the college student population. Non-exercise estimated CRF (eCRF) could be used to identify students at risk for or suffering from depression. This study investigated the associations of depression and eCRF in college students. Participants (N = 437) completed a survey which included demographic and student-status questions, eCRF variables, and a validated depression instrument. Descriptive, chi-square, t-test, regression, and odds ratio analyses were employed. Depression was associated …

Self-Efficacy, Social Support, Therapeutic Support And The Initiation And Duration Of Breastfeeding In Adolescent Mothers, Deborah L. Birk
Dissertations
This longitudinal investigation examines self-efficacy, social support and therapeutic support as predictors of initiation and duration of breastfeeding in adolescent mothers. It proposes that prenatal levels of self-efficacy, social support and therapeutic support are significant predictors of breastfeeding initiation in adolescent mothers. It also proposes that postpartum levels of these variables are significant predictors of the number of days breastfeeding after delivery in adolescent mothers.
Hypertonic Lower Extremities In Infants: Correlation To Motor Function Scores At Thirteen Months Of Age, Susan Jean Brillhart
Hypertonic Lower Extremities In Infants: Correlation To Motor Function Scores At Thirteen Months Of Age, Susan Jean Brillhart
Dissertations
Exploring a large data set, hypertonicity of the lower extremities has been incidentally identified as occurring in one out of every five infants, whether term or preterm. This retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive, quantitative study examined data from 463 functionally and structurally normal infants and identified infants that were considered to be hypertonic at either hospital discharge and at one month of corrected gestational age to determine what their motor capabilities were at 13 months of age. Understanding the correlation will assist in determining whether early intervention is indicated for these infants. Multiple statistical analyses revealed no correlation between hypertonicity as a …
Sex, Drugs, And Religion: A Multi-Ethnic Analysis Of Health Behaviors, Attitudes, And Perceptions Of Childbearing Women, Robin L. Page
Sex, Drugs, And Religion: A Multi-Ethnic Analysis Of Health Behaviors, Attitudes, And Perceptions Of Childbearing Women, Robin L. Page
Dissertations
Maternal health behaviors such as substance use and sexual promiscuity can put the health of mothers and their offspring at risk. Sociodemographic factors such as low socioeconomic status are also found to correlate with health risks for childbearing women. Hispanic women—especially those less-acculturated—often have sociodemographic risk factors present, but have paradoxically positive pregnancy outcomes. Healthy behaviors in addition to religiosity have been hypothesized to contribute to such positive outcomes. Past studies offer support for the positive influence of religion on healthy behaviors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns and predictors of healthy behaviors and well-being of …

Pressure Ulcers And Prevention Among Pediatric Patients And Factors Associated With Their Occurrence In Acute Care Hospitals, Ivy J. Razmus
Dissertations
Pressure ulcers are a health-care concern for all patient populations; however, younger patients, including infants, have different etiologies associated with pressure ulcer development. The influence of hospital, unit, and nursing factors on hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) rates have not been evaluated in pediatric patients. Comparative data for pediatric patients is necessary for hospitals to improve the care related to prevention and treatment of pediatric pressure ulcers.
The purpose of this study was to describe (a) the pressure ulcer prevalence rate and the rate of HAPU in pediatric patients; (b) the frequency of patient pressure ulcer risk assessment and prevention …

Dealing With Hurricanes: Coastal Community Adaptation To Socioeconomic And Environmental Pressures In Yaguajay, Central Cuba, Victoria Ramenzoni
Sustainability Seminar Series
Hurricanes can cause extensive long-term damage to small-scale fisheries. Yet, information is scarce on how these communities are impacted by extreme events in the Caribbean as in other parts of the world. Focusing on an artisanal fishery in Yaguajay, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, this presentation discusses how local fishermen have perceived and responded to the different damages brought about by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and inundations associated with Storm Alberto in May 2018. Combining discussions and short interviews carried out pre and post-hurricane, this study identifies major environmental impacts and matching responses. In addition, the article sheds light on the …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Gestational diabetes is a concern for a large number of pregnant women due to the potential for long-term complications for both the mother and the fetus. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes in the general public, the number of pregnant women with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus has also increased. In order to adequately educate their patients, it is important for pharmacists to be aware of the general practices of treating gestational diabetes. This review will highlight recent updates to initial screening, the criteria for diagnosing gestational diabetes, and current management strategies.

The Experience Of Cognitive Change In Women With Breast Cancer Following Chemotherapy, Mary Louise Kanaskie
The Experience Of Cognitive Change In Women With Breast Cancer Following Chemotherapy, Mary Louise Kanaskie
Dissertations
Change in cognitive function is one side effect of chemotherapy that has been reported in some breast cancer survivors. Alarming reports indicate that between 16 to 50 percent of women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer experience symptoms of cognitive impairment. These symptoms include subtle changes in memory, concentration, and some higher order processes that include psychomotor speed and executive functioning. In addition, it has been reported that these symptoms may persist even years after completion of treatment. Research is limited that has explored the lived experience of the phenomenon of chemotherapy-related cognitive change in breast cancer survivors.

© 2019 American Society for Nutrition. The status of vitamin D is determined mainly by its formation in skin by the photochemical action of solar UVB light (wavelength 290-320 nm) on the precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol. Because of seasonal variation in intensity of solar UV light, vitamin D status falls in winter and rises in summer. It has been presumed that there is no functional store of vitamin D. Thus, to avoid deficiency, a nutritional supply would be required in winter. However, there is now evidence that the main circulating metabolite of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, accumulates in skeletal muscle cells, which …

Constructing The Meaning Of Family In The Context Of Biological Family Separation : A Study Of Children In Institutional Care And Care Leavers In Zimbabwe, Getrude Dadirai Gwenzi
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Family has been defined as a powerful and pervasive word in our culture, embracing a variety of social, cultural, economic and symbolic meanings. Its importance for the development and wellbeing of children cannot be overemphasized. How ‘family’ is conceptualized by both children and adults remains a highly-contested subject considering the many changes in the form, structure, and relationships that could be described as ‘family’. Few studies have examined the relational lives of children and young adults who grow up in institutional care from a sociological perspective. The thesis makes meaningful contributions to the literature with a study of children and …

Abstract
Information technology affects the views and behavior of users and their environment. In the early decades, Traditional Islamic Boarding School (TIBSs) prohibited the use of communication and information technology. TIBSs experienced a shift to be increasingly open to the media and the internet. A strict prohibition on the use of media in Islamic boarding schools influences their insights about their health problems. To ensure the influence of media and internet on students’ life in TIBS, this research was conducted aiming at explaining the use level of media and internet by students in seeking health information, and the influence of …

After decades of high deer populations, North American forests have lost much of their previous biodiversity. Any landscape‐level recovery requires substantial reduc‐ tions in deer herds, but modern societies and wildlife management agencies appear unable to devise appropriate solutions to this chronic ecological and human health crisis. We evaluated the effectiveness of fertility control and hunting in reducing deer impacts at Cornell University. We estimated spring deer populations and planted Quercus rubra seedlings to assess deer browse pressure, rodent attack, and other factors compromising seedling performance. Oak seedlings protected in cages grew well, but deer annually browsed ≥60% of unprotected …

Memories Of Life On The Farm: Through The Lens Of Pioneer Photographer J. C. Allen, Frederick Whitford, Neal Harmeyer
The Founders Series
John Calvin Allen, professionally known as J. C., worked as a photographer for Purdue University from 1909-1952, and operated his own photography business until his death in 1976. The J. C. Allen photographs represent a historical account of the transition from pioneer practices to scientific methodologies in agriculture and rural communities. During this major transitional period for agriculture, tractors replaced horses, hybrid corn supplanted open-pollinated corn, and soybeans changed from a novelty crop to regular rotation on most farms. During this time, purebred animals with better genetic pedigrees replaced run-of-the-mill livestock, and systematic disease prevention in cattle, swine, and poultry …
