“Everybody Is Scared To Eat The Food”: Exploring Food Sovereignty Applications In A Refugee Agricultural Program, Cheyenne Rose Schoen
“Everybody Is Scared To Eat The Food”: Exploring Food Sovereignty Applications In A Refugee Agricultural Program, Cheyenne Rose Schoen
Theses - ALL
This research documents some of the goals and challenges of refugee farmers and gardeners who participated in an organized agriculture project in Syracuse, New York. During the 2018 harvest season I observed and interviewed nine refugee farmers from Somalia, Bhutan, Nepal, and Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as four organizational staff members who were recruited through their affiliation with the Syracuse Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program (SyRAPP) and the Refugee and Immigrants Self-Empowerment (RISE) organization. Refugee farmers expressed distrust of the conventional food system, they valued control over the food supply through farming, and many desired to live at or …

The Effects Of A Virtual Wellness Community Upon Participants’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Ashly Locklin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the effects of a virtual wellness community on the self-efficacy of participants to attain their wellness goals through a mixed-methods design. Eight female participants between the ages of 25-38 completed a pre- and post-survey with 5-point Likert scale questions and open-ended questions before and after participating in a 28-day virtual wellness community. Instruments were developed for this study based off Bandura’s (2006) Self-Efficacy to Regulate Exercise and Bandura’s (2006) Self-Efficacy to Regulate Eating Habits surveys. Quantitative data were analyzed by summing item level scores and calculating percentages to examine the distribution across the scales, through paired-samples t-tests, …

Natural Antidiabetic Of Tunjuk Langit (Helminthostachys Zeylanica) Rhizome Extracts, Fania E. Ridhasya, Hilwan Y. Teruna, Rudi Hendra, Muhammad Almurdani
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
The use of medicinal plants in treating diabetes mellitus is increasing in Indonesia. Plenty of plants from different regions may have anti-diabetic effect, including Helminthostachys zeylanica. This plant is commonly used as a traditional medicine to treat inflammation, cough, dysentery, and malaria in Talang Mamak tribe, Indragiri Hulu, Riau, however in China it is used to treat diabetic. Thus, we examined whether the extract of H. zeylanica originated from Riau have potential antidiabetic activity. We assessed the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the extract of H. zeylanica rhizome. The results showed the antidiabetic values of n-hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), …
Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu
Dissertations - ALL
This study compared three multimedia input modes in the modality and redundancy principles (Mayer, 2009) in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students’ learning and examined the applicability of the modality and redundancy principles for ESL students. Mayer’s modality and redundancy principles (2009) inform the design of effective multimedia lessons. However, the two principles originally stemmed from experimental studies examining students’ learning in their native language and did not include ESL students in the discussion. Based on the modality and redundancy principles, added on-screen text and graphics lead to an overload in learner’s visual channel, which undermines …

The Path To Building Resilience In Sri Lankan Rice Farms, Tarea Karunaratne
The Path To Building Resilience In Sri Lankan Rice Farms, Tarea Karunaratne
Student Theses 2015-Present
Rice cultivation in Sri Lanka roots back to its very first Kingdom in 161 B.C, and is still an incredibly populous industry to this day with an estimated 708,000 hectares of land being used for paddy cultivation. However, due to a changing global climate and an increase in natural disasters worldwide, Sri Lanka’s rice industry and the millions of people dependent on it have been greatly affected. This paper seeks to explore resilience building in a Sri Lankan context, taking into account the cultural and socio-economic factors that may influence how rice is farmed and who farms it, and to …
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Temperature And Prey Abundance On Bald Eagle Reproductive Dynamics, Joshua H. Schmidt, Judy Putera, Tammy L. Wilson
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Temperature And Prey Abundance On Bald Eagle Reproductive Dynamics, Joshua H. Schmidt, Judy Putera, Tammy L. Wilson
United States National Park Service: Publications
Understanding the mechanisms by which populations are regulated is critical for predicting the effects of large-scale perturbations. While discrete mortality events provide clear evidence of direct impacts, indirect pathways are more difficult to assess but may play important roles in population and ecosystem dynamics. Here, we use multi-state occupancy models to analyze a long-term dataset on nesting bald eagles in south-central Alaska with the goal of identifying both direct and indirect mechanisms influencing reproductive output in this apex predator. We found that the probabilities of both nest occupancy and success were higher in the portion of the study area where …

Stress And Coping Of Caregivers To Individuals With Dementia, Karen Annette Jensen
Stress And Coping Of Caregivers To Individuals With Dementia, Karen Annette Jensen
Dissertations
Considerable literature exists on the presence of burden among caregivers, however, it has also been discovered that individuals psychologically adapt to situations in which they are involved. The purpose of this study is, utilizing an adaptation paradigm, to examine the interrelationship of factors in the caregiver's environment and the mediating role of coping mechanisms on appraisal of caregiving. The theoretical framework to guide this study was based on Roy's Adaptation model in conjunction with Lazarus and Folkman's cognitively-based theory of stress and coping.

Ants are among the most successful insects in Earth’s evolutionary history. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding range-limiting factors that may influence their distribution. The goal of this study was to describe the environmental factors (climate and soil types) that likely impact the ranges of five out of the eight most abundant Trachymyrmex species and the most abundant Mycetomoellerius species in the United States. Important environmental factors may allow us to better understand each species’ evolutionary history. We generated habitat suitability maps using MaxEnt for each species and identified associated most important environmental variables. We quantified niche overlap …

Caregivers' Psychological Factors Underlying Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake Among Non-Hispanic Black Preschoolers, Julia A. Franson Tipton
Dissertations
Non-Hispanic black children consume greater amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and are at disproportionately high risk for obesity and other SSB-related health problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between caregivers' beliefs, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, past behavior, and intention to serve SSBs to non- Hispanic black preschoolers. The researcher conducted a cross-sectional, correlational study using multiple regression with path analysis using the Expanded Theory of Planned Behavior as the theoretical framework.

Genome-Wide Analysis And Characterization Of F-Box Gene Family In Gossypium Hirsutum L, S Zhang, Z Tian, H Li, Y Guo, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Background F-box proteins are substrate-recognition components of the Skp1-Rbx1-Cul1-F-box protein (SCF) ubiquitin ligases. By selectively targeting the key regulatory proteins or enzymes for ubiquitination and 26S proteasome mediated degradation, F-box proteins play diverse roles in plant growth/development and in the responses of plants to both environmental and endogenous signals. Studies of F-box proteins from the model plant Arabidopsis and from many additional plant species have demonstrated that they belong to a super gene family, and function across almost all aspects of the plant life cycle. However, systematic exploration of F-box family genes in the important fiber crop cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) …
