New York State Birth Through Five (Nysb5) Preschool Development Grant Needs Assessment Report, Center For Human Services Research, University At Albany
Education & Early Childhood Development Reports and Research Briefs
The New York State Birth Through Five (NYSB5) Preschool Development grantee, the New York State Council on Children and Families (CCF), partnered with the Center for Human Services Research (CHSR) at the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY), to conduct New York’s first-ever comprehensive birth through five needs assessment of its early childhood care and education (ECCE) system. As found and detailed in this Needs Assessment, the state’s expansive ECCE system points to a strong commitment to supporting young children and their families. Yet, the scale of the ECCE system, cross-sector configuration, range of funding mechanisms, and …

On-Farm Food Loss In Northern And Central California: Results Of Field Survey Measurements, Gregory A. Baker, Leslie C. Gray, Michael J. Harwood, Travis J. Osland, Jean Baptiste C. Tooley
Environmental Studies and Sciences
Prevailing estimates of food loss at the farm level are sparse and often reliant upon grower surveys. A more comprehensive review of food loss at the farm level using field surveys is required to gain an adequate understanding of the depth of this issue. This paper details the results of 123 in-field surveys and 18 in-depth interviews of 20 different, hand-harvested field crops performed largely on midsize to large conventional farms in northern and central California. We also provide estimates of the percentage of fields that go unharvested, commonly known as walk-by fields. The results show that food loss is …

Diet‐Induced Obesity Decreases Rate‐Dependent Depression In The Hoffmann’S Reflex In Adult Mice, Gerard Nguyen, Shea Putnam, Mulatwa Haile, Zahra Raza, Martina Bremer, Katherine Wilkinson
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Obesity is associated with balance and motor control deficits. We have recently shown that Group Ia muscle spindle afferents, the sensory arm of the muscle stretch reflex, are less responsive in mice fed a high-fat diet. Here we test the hypothesis that reflex excitability to sensory information from Group Ia muscle spindle afferents is altered in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. We measured the anesthetized Hoffmann’s or H-reflex, the electrical analog of the muscle stretch reflex. Adult mice of both sexes were fed a control diet (CD; 10% kcal from fat) or a high-fat diet (HFD; 60% kcal from …

Orthopedics Articles
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) computer adaptive tests (CATs) have emerged as an efficient technique for measuring patient-reported outcomes among orthopaedic patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the floor and ceiling (F/C) effects, time to completion (TTC), and question burden of PROMIS CATs administered to patients presenting to a shoulder and sports medicine orthopaedic clinic.
Methods: Patients prospectively completed PROMIS CATs including the physical function (PROMIS-PF) or upper-extremity function (PROMIS-UE), pain interference (PROMIS-PI), and depression (PROMIS-D) domains at their initial encounter and were retrospectively included in this study. Adult patients indicating a single problem involving …

Eating disorders have become more prevalent in recent years, as societal standards have gotten harsher. Typically, when non-athletes think about the type of people who develop eating disorders, they may not consider athletes to be among those that are most affected. However, in sports such as wrestling and aesthetic sports, like gymnastics and figure skating, the emphasis of image and the pressure from coaches can be extremely harmful to athletes’ mental health. This article discusses specific statistics of the incidence of eating disorders in various sports, but mainly focuses on figure skating, gymnastics, and wrestling. The claim that the main …

Over the past decade several studies have reported the use of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) to induce the crystallization of lipids. The effect that HIU has on lipid crystallization is usually attributed to the generation of cavities but acoustic cavitation has never been fully explored in lipids. The dynamics of a particular cavitation cluster next to a piston like emitter in an oil, was investigated in this study. The lipid systems, which are important in food processing, are studied with high-speed camera imaging, laser scattering and pressure measurements. A sequence of stable clusters were noted. In addition, a bifurcated streamer …

Introduction: Living on campus is considered a high impact practice for student success. Student success is believed to emerge from “the amount of physical and psychological energy that the student devotes to the academic experience” (Astin, 1984), housing and residence life programming facilitates this type of devotion. However, creating this type of living experience requires administrators understand the complexities of how housing can affect specific student groups and their decision to either persist at or leave an institution. This report explores the impact of housing and residence life at Utah State University on students living on campus. It disaggregates results …
