Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Background: Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) is an independent anthropometric measurement used to identify malnutrition in children. While much research has been dedicated to applying fixed estimates of MUAC to identify cases of malnutrition in children under 5 years of age, far less has been done with age-specific MUAC Z-score values across the continuum of age from birth through adolescence.
Methods: The present study examined the effectiveness of a novel MUAC Z-score tape, in the hands of community health volunteers, to identify children over the age of 5 who would benefit from nutritional rehabilitation. In January of 2019, 112 community health …

Egestion Versus Excretion: A Meta-Analysis Examining Nutrient Release Rates And Ratios Across Freshwater Fauna, Halvor Halvorson, Carla Atkinson
Faculty Publications
In aquatic settings, animals directly affect ecosystem functions through excretion of dissolved nutrients. However, the comparative role of egestion as an animal-mediated nutrient flux remains understudied. We conducted a literature survey and meta-analysis to directly compare nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and N:P of egestion compared to excretion rates and ratios across freshwater animals. Synthesizing 215 datasets across 47 animal species (all primary consumers or omnivores), we show that the total N and P egestion rates exceed inorganic N and P excretion rates but not total N and P excretion rates, and that proportions of P egested compared to excreted depend …

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplementation On Muscular Fatigue In Professional Men's Athletics, Yusni Yusni, Amiruddin Amiruddin
Folia Medica Indonesiana
High-intensity exercise (3000-meter runner) contributes to muscle fatigue. Fatigue can be determined by measuring blood lactate levels. Blood lactate levels are a product of anaerobic metabolism. Lactate accumulation due to anaerobic physical activity can inhibit the glycolytic enzyme that affects decreased ATP production, damage of the calcium and sodium pumps in the muscles and causes fatigue. This study aimed to analyze the effect of vitamin E on the level of fatigue through the response of blood lactate levels in the runner 3000 meters. This research was a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest design. Research subjects were 9 volunteer athletes (3000 …

Hyperglycemic conditions and disruptions to glucose-regulating pathways lead to increased formation of highly reactive aldehydes, methylglyoxal and glyoxal, which react with certain arginine and lysine residues in proteins to form advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These AGEs damage the integrity of the retinal vasculature predominantly through two mechanisms: non-receptor-mediated damage, which pertains to the interaction with extracellular matrix and its functional properties, and receptor-mediated damage through AGE interactions with their receptors (RAGE) on pericytes and Muller cells. Damage occurring between AGE and RAGE potentially generates reactive oxygen species, inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors. Both mechanisms result in increased permeability of …

Organization Management Journal
Despite the growing empirical evidence on the beneficial effects of “micro” work breaks, scant research has examined “online” work breaks. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore the nature and effects of online work breaks. Through an in-depth qualitative study of a diverse set of 33 full-time working professionals, we identified conditions under which online breaks occur as well as the characteristics and outcomes of these breaks. Interestingly, our findings point to both negative and positive outcomes associated with online breaks, largely dependent on an individual’s ability to self-regulate. Our grounded theory approach allows us to develop a …
