A Terrestrial Reconstruction Of Gona, Ethiopia Before And During The African Humid Period, Marie N. White, Gary E. Stinchcomb
A Terrestrial Reconstruction Of Gona, Ethiopia Before And During The African Humid Period, Marie N. White, Gary E. Stinchcomb
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The African Humid Period (AHP) resulted in more humid conditions across Northern and Eastern Africa from 15 to 5 thousand years ago (ka). This wetter climate affected flora, fauna and the Homo sapiens living in East Africa. The lack of terrestrial paleoenvironmental reconstructions is a problem in East Africa, especially during the AHP, where most are done utilizing lacustrine or marine proxies. In the case of Gona, Ethiopia, terrestrial proxies are desired due to the rich archaeological and fossil concentrations that occur in the area. Paleosols provide more direct, localized reconstructions that provide context for these finds. This study utilizes …
Greed, A Forgotten Vice?, Kwok Tung Cheung
Greed, A Forgotten Vice?, Kwok Tung Cheung
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
There is a surprising lack of discussion on greed in business ethics. Whether in popular textbooks or in the literature, there is hardly any philosophical explication of greed. In this paper, I investigate the popular idea that greedy people desire more and more, the Christian idea of avarice as in the seven deadly sins, and Aristotle’s idea of pleonexia which has incorporated a condition of justice. These three different ideas are respectively psychological, metaphysical and socio-political. I propose the three of them should be integrated to give a concept of greed that is relevant and useful in the contemporary world …

Metabolic Modeling Elucidates The Transactions In The Rumen Microbiome And The Shifts Upon Virome Interactions, Mohammad Mazharul Islam, Samodha C. Fernando, Rajib Saha
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
The complex microbial ecosystem within the bovine rumen plays a crucial role in host nutrition, health, and environmental impact. However, little is known about the interactions between the functional entities within the system, which dictates the community structure and functional dynamics and host physiology. With the advancements in high-throughput sequencing and mathematical modeling, in silico genome-scale metabolic analysis promises to expand our understanding of the metabolic interplay in the community. In an attempt to understand the interactions between microbial species and the phages inside rumen, a genome-scale metabolic modeling approach was utilized by using key members in the rumen microbiome …

Omani School Students’ Attitudes Toward Agriculture: Investigating The Role Of Gender And Geographical Regions, Abdullah Ambusaidi, Mohammed Al-Saidi
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
A 24-item questionnaire was designed to collect specific data in order to determine Omani students’ attitudes toward agriculture and, specifically, whether or not these attitudes differ according to gender and the geographical regions where students reside. A survey research method based on the use of a questionnaire was employed. The questionnaire items were divided into four domains: participants’ general knowledge about agriculture, their personal interest about agriculture, the role of government in supporting agriculture, and the role of agriculture in food security. The questionnaire was administered to 394 randomly selected Grade 10 students. Participants consisted of 189 male students and …

Background: Excess gestational weight gain has long- and short-term implications for women and children, and postpartum weight retention is associated with an increased risk of long-term obesity. Despite the existence of dietary and exercise guidelines, many women struggle to return to pre-pregnancy weight. Experiences of women in tackling postpartum weight loss are poorly understood. We undertook this study to explore experiences related to nutrition, exercise and weight in the postpartum in women in Ontario, Canada. Methods: This was a nested qualitative study within The Be Healthy in Pregnancy Study, a randomized controlled trial. Women randomized to the control group were …

Biology Department Faculty Works
A vast body of research demonstrates that many ecological and evolutionary processes can only be understood from a tri‐trophic viewpoint, that is, one that moves beyond the pairwise interactions of neighbouring trophic levels to consider the emergent features of interactions among multiple trophic levels. Despite its unifying potential, tri‐trophic research has been fragmented, following two distinct paths. One has focused on the population biology and evolutionary ecology of simple food chains of interacting species. The other has focused on bottom‐up and top‐down controls over the distribution of biomass across trophic levels and other ecosystem‐level variables. Here, we propose pathways to …
Factors Related To 30-Day Readmission Among Hispanics With Type 2 Diabetes, Athena Mohebbi
Factors Related To 30-Day Readmission Among Hispanics With Type 2 Diabetes, Athena Mohebbi
Dissertations
Background: Medicare spends $17 billion yearly on 30-day readmissions. Hispanic adults have a higher prevalence of diabetes (12.6%) compared to non-Hispanic whites (9.4%). Those with a diagnosis of diabetes have the 17% higher rate (14-23%) for 30-day readmission. Little research has been conducted on Hispanics with diabetes relative to 30-day readmissions. Aims: Among Hispanics with type 2 diabetes: 1) measure the incidence of 30-day readmission by sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical factors;2) identify independent factors associated with 30-day readmission among Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes accounting for potential covariates; 3) compare the ability of the Hispanic Diabetic Study Model plus …

Pulmonary Disease
Introduction The extrapulmonary manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients are similar to symptoms of frailty, a geriatric syndrome. This study was designed to identify the relation between frailty and patient outcomes during a COPD exacerbation. Methods This retrospective study identified 10,235 patients hospitalized for COPD exacerbation, as well as 16 laboratory tests included in a frailty index that have been linked to frailty. Patients were divided into less frail (0-8 positive laboratory values) and more frail (9-16 positive laboratory values) groups. The primary composite endpoints were mechanical ventilation, ICU length of stay, readmission, and discharge status. Results Of …

Amish And Mennonite Lay Caregivers' Experiences Using The B&W Burdock Leaf Treatment On Burns And Wounds: A Qualitative Study, Rosanna Hess
Amish And Mennonite Lay Caregivers' Experiences Using The B&W Burdock Leaf Treatment On Burns And Wounds: A Qualitative Study, Rosanna Hess
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Amish and Mennonites have a long standing heritage of caring for each other within the community and family setting using natural, herbal medicines and therapies. For several decades, in numerous Anabaptist communities across the United States, a burns and wounds treatment has been popularized by the training of hundreds of lay caregivers. Little is known outside these communities about the experiences of these caregivers dedicated to providing burns and wounds care. The aim of this study was to describe the lived experience of caregivers who use the Burns & Wounds ointment (B&W) and burdock leaf treatment. Twelve caregivers (eight women …

Reviving The Demographic Study Of The Amish, Corey Colyer, Cory Anderson, Joseph Donnermeyer, Rachel Stein, Samson Wasao
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
The Amish exhibit distinctive demographic patterns, notably high fertility. While scholars have studied Amish population dynamics for more than a half century, recent research in this area is limited. We believe the time is ripe to reverse this trend. This article reviews data collection methods, points to a variety of accessible sources of new data, presents some preliminary results from the analysis of one such source (the McKune dataset for Holmes County, Ohio), introduces the research agenda and work of the newly formed Amish Population Research Group, and reviews past demographic findings to situate our agenda. An invitation is extended …

Anabaptist Community Members' Perceptions And Preferences Related To Healthcare, Dawn Garrett-Wright, M. Eve Main, M. Susan Jones
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
The plain Anabaptists are thought to differ from mainstream U.S. health care beliefs and practices. Many non-Anabaptist health care providers have limited knowledge of the specific health beliefs and preferences of Anabaptists, which can lead to misunderstandings. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to collect information from Anabaptist community members related to health care beliefs and preferences in their communities. Participants, who were members of various plain Anabaptist communities, completed a questionnaire containing open-ended questions about health issues. Seven themes emerged in results: (1) health viewed as a gift from God that provides the ability to work; (2) …
The Amish Settlement In Honduras, 1968-1978: A (Half) Failed Attempt To Develop An Amish Understanding Of Mission, Cory Anderson, Jennifer Anderson
The Amish Settlement In Honduras, 1968-1978: A (Half) Failed Attempt To Develop An Amish Understanding Of Mission, Cory Anderson, Jennifer Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
For their several-hundred years of successfully maintaining Amish settlements in North America, for what reason would a group of families—largely from Nappanee, IN, and Aylmer, ON—want to start a settlement in Honduras? This account traces the genesis of this Latin American settlement to the mid-century restlessness among Old Order Amish for religious and moral reform. The account especially follows families from Daviess County, IN, who, after failed settlement attempts in Michigan and Ohio, helped found Aylmer, ON, a successful revisionist Amish settlement. From there, Peter Stoll, one of the Aylmer founders, desired to move to Honduras for two reasons: (1) …
Amish Education: A Synthesis, Cory Anderson
Amish Education: A Synthesis, Cory Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Amish education is one of the most researched subtopics in Amish studies. This article is a meta-analysis of the existing literature about Amish education, finding that most research discusses how the parochial school system functions to socialize students into the broader Amish social system. In particular, the school socializes students into (1) several major Amish-defining internalized dispositions, ideologies, and outlooks and (2) the meso- and micro-level Amish social structure. Several anomalies do exist, including their educational approach to special needs children, parochial school dysfunctions, and alternative schooling methods. The article concludes with suggestions for future research, including more rigorous ethnographic …

Child Weight And Feeding Patterns In An Old Order Mennonite Community, Dawn Garrett-Wright, M. Eve Main, M. Susan Jones
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Purpose: Feeding practices in some religious communities may decrease childhood obesity. However, there is limited research in these communities to assess maternal perceptions of their children’s weight and feeding patterns. The purpose of this study was to ascertain Old Order Mennonite mothers’ perceptions of their children’s body weight and to examine feeding patterns for their children. Sample: Participants for this descriptive, correlational study were recruited from an Old Order Mennonite community in south central Kentucky. Sampling was achieved using a snowball sampling strategy and the use of a community insider. Methods: Body Mass Index was measured for mothers and child …
