Parasites found in freshwater fishes are primarly protozoans, myxozoans, helminth (platyhelminths, nematodes and acanthocephalans), hirudineans and crustaceans. Although both ectoparasites and endoparasites are common in fishes, internal parasites are able to cause much greater damage to their hosts than external parasites.
Over the years, cage culture has become one of the economically viable methods of large-scale production of high-value food fishes. Although, cage farming has many economic advantages, diseases are one of the major limiting factors to the successful production.
The aim of this study was to determine the presence of parasite fauna in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L. …

Undergraduate Research Develops Transferable Skills More Successfully Than Other High Impact Practices, Charles W. Gunnels
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research enhances student learning and professional development, including self-reported learning gains and solidified career goals. However, it is unclear how undergraduate research affects direct measures of student learning relative to other High Impact Practices (HIPs). FGCU assesses critical thinking, information literacy, & written communication skills among graduating seniors annually, allowing us to compare HIPs directly. Seniors that complete research-focused capstones perform significantly better than students completing service-learning or internship experiences. Research appears to strengthen students’ use of evidence, which then improves the overall development of these transferable skills.

Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen
Biology Faculty Articles
Antibiotic usage has become very widespread, as they are used to treat so many infectious diseases today. Antimicrobial agents exert their actions via different mechanisms including blockage of cell wall synthesis, interference of protein and/or nucleic acid synthesis, interruption of cell membrane structure, and inhibition of a metabolic pathway. The treatment of bacterial infections with antimicrobial agents has become more difficult due to the capability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics. Erroneous diagnosing, misconceptions, and improper physician-patient dynamics have led to overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacterial colonies have been shown to confer advantageous genetic …

Characterizing Louisiana's Freshwater Commercial Fisheries, Lauren Bonatakis
LSU Master's Theses
As an important contributor to Louisiana’s economy, the commercial freshwater fisheries have been the subject of growing attention in recent years by resource managers. Compared to the marine sector, little is known about these fisheries. Anecdotally, the fisheries appear to be on the brink of collapse. Fewer young fishermen are entering the field, fish buyers and processors are closing, and market prices remain stagnant. Because of this, the fisheries lack the resources needed to perpetuate the success and sustainability for future generations. To better understand this industry, I conducted a two-part study to characterize the commercial freshwater fisheries in Louisiana. …

Theses and Dissertations
Success in school is something that every student tries and accomplishes in different ways, but this is not a simple matter of just demonstrating academic success. Students may have the best grades, but if they do not master the “college student” (Collier, Morgan, 2004) role, many students may not succeed. When students master this role, it will help them understand the different expectations professors may have and then will be able to apply their academic skills effectively and help them meet these expectations. This is something that many students know and understand, and this information is not passed on to …
