Assessing Clinical Judgment Utilizing Embedded Patients In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program’S Simulation Laboratory, David K. Wells Nov 2019

Assessing Clinical Judgment Utilizing Embedded Patients In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program’S Simulation Laboratory, David K. Wells

All Theses And Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if clinical judgment could be assessed in baccalaureate nursing students during a 15 to 20-minute embedded (live patient) simulation scenario using role play. Graduate nurses are expected to apply critical reasoning and be clinically competent when caring for patients when they enter the nursing profession. The use of simulation scenarios is an approved and effective supplement to the clinical experience of nursing students. This study was conducted due to the sparsity of evidence referencing clinical judgment in live patient simulation scenarios. This study used a convenience sample (n=22) of baccalaureate nursing students …

Emerging evidence shows that phytochemicals, the secondary plant metabolites present in a large variety of foods, have the potential ability in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, the dosages of phytochemicals in the cellular and animal studies are too high to reach in humans by relevant foods or dietary supplement intake. The aims of this study were to investigate whether and how combined curcumin and luteolin synergistically inhibit tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-induced monocytes adhesion endothelium, a crucial step of the development of endothelial dysfunction, both in human vascular cells and mouse aortic endothelium. Our results show that combined curcumin …

Integrated Interventions In Early Childhood Education And Care (Ecec) In Economically Developing Countries, Jen Jackson, Syeda Kashfee Ahmed, Toby Carslake, Petra Lietz

Monitoring Learning

Integrated interventions combine multiple services or supports across different agencies in health, social welfare, employment services and education. Such interventions are typically larger in scale than those in other categories (e.g. parent- or child focused ECEC interventions), requiring collaboration or coordination of multiple service providers within the community. Integrated interventions are regarded as the most effective way to address young children’s learning and development and break inter-generational cycles of poverty. Four integrated interventions in ECEC were identified for this review (of a total of 109 studies) which required studies to examine links to children’s development outcomes, resulting in available evidence …

Large cohort studies and more recently electronic medical records (EMR) are being used to collect massive amounts of genetic information. Implementation of artificial intelligence has become increasingly necessary to interpret this data with the goal of augmenting patient care. While it is impossible to predict what the future holds, policy makers are challenged to create guiding principles and responsibly roll out these new technologies. On March 22, 2019, the University of Utah hosted its fourth annual Precision Medicine Symposium focusing on artificial intelligence, assembling large cohorts, and the population data revolution. The symposium brought together experts in medicine, science, law …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy affecting women worldwide with estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the USA in 2017. It is the second most prevalent cause of cancer-related death after lung cancer in females with an expected annual mortality rate of 16% [1]. Promotion of public awareness, screening programs, early diagnosis, intensive local treat- ment, and changes in chemotherapy regimens with endo- crine and targeted therapy account for a notable decrease in mortality. Nevertheless, these measures do not seem to have impacted the prognosis in patients with distant metastasis. Breast cancer has …

Bring Your Own Device (Byod): Engaging High School Students In A Photovoice Project On School Health Promotion Using Their Own Smart Devices In Nakuru North Of Nakuru County, Kenya, Francis Wacieni Mureithi

Master of Education

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative has in the recent years gained popularity globally where smart devices have become the bridge to close the digital divide in ICT integration in schools, enhanced individualized learning and expanded collaborations. Despite its proven efficacy in transforming learning and teaching, efforts to shift to BYOD is still very slow in developing countries. This is due to negative perceptions of stakeholders, among several other factors; teachers and parents do not trust that students can remain focused on education and be self-disciplined when using their smart devices in public schools in Kenya. The purpose of …

Unequal Opportunities And Public Policy: The Impact Of Parental Disability Benefits On Child Postsecondary Attendance, Kelly Chen, Lars Osberg, Shelley Phipps

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper uses Canada’s National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to examine whether greater cash transfers available to parents with disabilities when their child was aged 5 to 15 increase the chances that the child will attend post-secondary education (PSE) as a young adult. We exploit differences across provinces and over time in the generosity of provincial disability benefits programs in Canada and find that higher disability benefits when the child was aged 5-15 years old increase the probability that he or she will have attended or be attending PSE by age 19 to 25. The estimated effect size …

Addressing Challenges To The Reliable, Large-Scale Implementation Of Effective School Health Education, Michael J. Mann, David K. Lohrmann

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

The long-held priority of teaching young people the knowledge and skills needed for healthy living has recently been diminished in many preK-12 schools. Driven by federal and state priorities, laws, and policies associated with high-stakes testing, instruction in untested subjects has been reduced or eliminated in most schools in order to devote more attention to tested subjects, like reading, math, writing, and science. This article proposes a pathway to ensure that all children are able to learn what society knows about health. To that end, four challenges to the reliable, large-scale implementation of effective school health education are identified: (1) …

Faunal assemblages at hydrothermal vents associated with island-arc volcanism are less well known than those at vents on mid-ocean ridges and back-arc spreading centres. This study characterizes chemosynthetic biotopes at active hydrothermal vents discovered at the Kemp Caldera in the South Sandwich Arc. The caldera hosts sulfur and anhydrite vent chimneys in 1375–1487 m depth, which emit sulfide-rich fluids with temperatures up to 212°C, and the microbial community of water samples in the buoyant plume rising from the vents was dominated by sulfur-oxidizing Gammaproteobacteria. A total of 12 macro- and megafaunal taxa depending on hydrothermal activity were collected in these …

Although genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) is a well-established marker technology in diploids, the development of best practices for tetraploid species is a topic of current research. We determined the theoretical relationship between read depth and the phred-scaled probability of genotype misclassification conditioned on the true genotype, which we call expected genotype quality (EGQ). If the GBS method has 0.5% allelic error, then 17 reads are needed to classify simplex tetraploids as heterozygous with 95% accuracy (EGQ = 13) vs. 61 reads to determine allele dosage. We developed an R script to convert tetraploid GBS data in variant call format (VCF) into diploidized …

A Strategy For Building Healthy Local Churches In Jordan, Kwang Hu Hwang Nov 2019

A Strategy For Building Healthy Local Churches In Jordan, Kwang Hu Hwang

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Evangelical churches in Jordan have faced many challenges in maintaining healthy churches under the Islamic government. The churches in Jordan are not only important for local people, but also for people in the Middle East in fulfilling the Great Commission. This is because many Jordanians visit various Arab countries to have a job and a numerous number of Gulf countries’ people travel to Jordan. The purpose of this thesis is to create a strategy with this context to build healthy local churches in Jordan that can then be involved in fulfilling the Great Commission actively for the local and Arab …
