From Diagnosis To Routine Care In Type 1 Diabetes In Children: Parents’ Experiences, Géraldine Heilporn, Maude Laberge, André Côté, Monia Rekik
Patient Experience Journal
Having a child who lives with a Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) can represent a high burden for parents. The objective of our study is to identify and analyze the main challenges expressed by parents so that health care services better meet the needs of parents of T1D children. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents of 19 T1D children regarding detection and diagnosis, initial management at the hospital, post-discharge adaptation including daycare or school reintegration, and long-term T1D monitoring. Data analysis was performed following an inductive approach. The results showed a lack of knowledge regarding T1D in the society, especially for …

Patient Experience Journal
Patient engagement is a mechanism used to facilitate person-centred care, however, has not been realized in all patient populations. Often, many marginalized populations still remain under- and/or never-engaged. The purpose of this systematic review was to: 1) identify methods or interventions that have been used to engage under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services and 2) identify outcomes that are associated with engaging under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services. A comprehensive search using the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases was conducted to examine literature between January 2002 and January 2015. Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Data was …

Performance Impairment Following Sleep Restriction - Is Caffeine The Antidote?, Erin E. Horil
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that caffeine supplementation can lessen the negative effects that sleep restriction (i.e. shortened sleep duration) has on next day performance. Recent work done in our lab showed that sleep restriction has a negative effect on 3-km cycling time trial performance. Thus, it is important to investigate potential ways to lessen the negative effects sleep restriction may have on performance, since it is commonly seen in athletes. In this study, participants completed a battery of performance testing and then a heavy exercise session. This was followed by either a full night …

‘A Healthy Cit’: An Investigation Into Student Health Metrics, Lifestyle Behaviours And The Predictors Of Positive Mental Health In An Irish Higher Education Setting, Andrea Bickerdike, Joan Dineen, Cian O'Neill
Publications
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are potent health promotion settings, uniquely positioned to aid societal efforts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs). International evidence suggests that health metrics and lifestyle behaviours of higher education students are sub-optimal, yet a dearth of contemporary Irish data exists. This study aimed to examine sex differences in student lifestyle behaviours and identify significant predictors of positive mental health in an Irish HEI setting. An online questionnaire instrument distributed to all registered students (n = 11,261) gathered data regarding a multitude of health and lifestyle domains. Many items were adapted from previous Irish research. Further validated scales …

Rice Response To Nitrogen Fertilization And Comparison Of Unmanned Aerial Systems And Active Crop Canopy Sensors Vegetative Index To Estimate Rice Yield Potential, Anna Coker
LSU Master's Theses
Nitrogen (N) fertilization is a key component in producing profitable, maximized rice grain yields because yield is directly affected by N fertilizer applications. Economical optimum N rate (EONR) is used to estimate where the N fertilization rate impacts rice grain yield but is still economically efficient. Three common response models, linear-plateau, quadratic-plateau, and quadratic models were used to determine the response of rice to N fertilizer to determine the optimum N fertilization rate. The objective of the first part of this study was to evaluate the models by assessing the coefficients of determination (R2), maximum rice grain yields …

Increasing Rates Of Larc Uptake And Continuation Through Contraceptive Counseling: An Effective Approach For Women With Underutilization, Malia Johnson
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Unintended pregnancies in women with a substance use disorder are estimated to be nearly double that of the general population, of which negative health consequences are increased for both mother and neonate. Unintended pregnancies are preventable through the use of highly effective contraception that is less susceptible to the effects of typical versus perfect use. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is ideal for this patient population. Therefore, a thorough literature review was performed to evaluate the role of contraceptive counseling on LARC uptake and continuation among women. The results indicated that contraceptive counseling does influence LARC uptake and continuation and it …

Government Spending Across The World: How The United States Compares, Michael P. Ettlinger, Jordan Hensley, Julia Vieira
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Michael Ettlinger, Jordan Hensley, and Julia Vieira analyze how much the governments of different countries spend, and on what, to illuminate the range of fiscal policy options available and provide a basis for determining which approaches work best. They report that the United States ranks twenty-fourth in government spending as a share of GDP out of twenty-nine countries for which recent comparable data are available. The key determinant of where countries rank in overall government spending is the amount spent on social protection. The United States ranks last in spending on social protection as a share …

Evaluation Of Drought-Resistant Plants For Beneficial Insect Attraction, Benjamin Gluck
Master's Theses
Beneficial insects, such as natural enemies and pollinators, provide billions of dollars of ecological services to agricultural operations. However, as the climate changes, Connecticut is projected to have longer periods of drought. This could negatively impact the availability of flowering plants, and the beneficial insects who rely on their floral resources.
This research focuses on the diversity of insect visitors to five species of drought-resistant plants at the Plant Science Research and Educational facility. Over the two-year study the visitation frequency of pollinators and beneficial insects on the plants was observed, insect samples were collected for further identification. Agastache foeniculum …
