Examining The Moderating Role Of Promotive Factors On The Relationship Between Bullying Victimization And Suicidal Behavior, Rachel Simonds Dec 2019

Examining The Moderating Role Of Promotive Factors On The Relationship Between Bullying Victimization And Suicidal Behavior, Rachel Simonds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bullying is one of the most common challenges that youth in the United States face that can often have negative impacts on children’s lives and mental health. One potential negative outcome of bullying victimization is increased risk for suicidal behavior, including suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Implementing interventions and supports for youth involved in bullying has the ability to decrease risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.

Previous literature supports that those involved in bullying are at an increased risk for both suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Evidence supports promotive factors that help minimize negative outcomes those who are involved …

Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu Dec 2019

Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu

Dissertations - ALL

This study compared three multimedia input modes in the modality and redundancy principles (Mayer, 2009) in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students’ learning and examined the applicability of the modality and redundancy principles for ESL students. Mayer’s modality and redundancy principles (2009) inform the design of effective multimedia lessons. However, the two principles originally stemmed from experimental studies examining students’ learning in their native language and did not include ESL students in the discussion. Based on the modality and redundancy principles, added on-screen text and graphics lead to an overload in learner’s visual channel, which undermines …

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah Dec 2019

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah

Dissertations - ALL

One of the most important structures in social networks is communities. Understanding communities is useful in many applications, such as suggesting a friend for a user in an online friendship network, recommending a product for a user in an e-commerce network, etc. However, before studying anything about communities, researchers first need to collect appropriate data. Getting complete access to the data for community studies is unrealistic in most cases. In this work, we address the problem of crawling networks to identify community structure. Firstly, we present a network sampling technique to crawl the community structure of dynamic networks when there …

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang Dec 2019

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

Fusing heterogeneous data from multiple modalities for inference problems has been an attractive and important topic in recent years. There are several challenges in multi-modal fusion, such as data heterogeneity and data correlation. In this dissertation, we investigate inference problems with heterogeneous modalities by taking into account nonlinear cross-modal dependence. We apply copula based methodology to characterize this dependence.

In distributed detection, the goal often is to minimize the probability of detection error at the fusion center (FC) based on a fixed number of observations collected by the sensors. We design optimal detection algorithms at the FC using a regular …

Independent Cinema In The Digital Age: Is Digital Transformation The Only Way To Survival?, Karolina Maria Sadlowska, Paula Sonja Karlsson, Steven Caldwell Brown

Economic and Business Review

Development of digital technologies has resulted in the creative and cultural industries having to adapt business models in light of evolving consumer preferences. This paper aims to examine how independent cinemas can transform their delivery in light of the challenges posed by digital disruption, and more specifically, whether this has to focus entirely on digital transformation. This conceptual paper examines one independent cinema in Scotland, concluding that digitalisation should be used to complement existing activities, along with exploring other innovative business models. It is crucial to understand that the old-time patterns of running a business have irrevocably changed.

Evolution Law Of Manufacturing Paradigm And Policy Suggestions For Developing New Manufacturing, Yang Qingfeng, Ren Jinluan Dec 2019

Evolution Law Of Manufacturing Paradigm And Policy Suggestions For Developing New Manufacturing, Yang Qingfeng, Ren Jinluan

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Up to now, the manufacturing paradigm has gone through four stages:handmade, large machine production, assembly line production, and mass customization. Through historical research, this study finds five laws in the evolution of Manufacturing Paradigm, which are:value jump, incommensurability, reverse elimination, original innovation, localization and evolution. Although the transformation process of manufacturing paradigm has a long period of time, the evolution law between the old and new manufacturing paradigms still fully reflects the connotation of "manufacturing revolution". Based on the study of the Evolution Law of Manufacturing Paradigm, this study puts forward some pertinent policy suggestions for the development of new …

CO2 electrochemical reduction (CO2ER) activity is known to be influenced by electrode materials. In this study, we report the fabrication of a copper-nickel-modified boron-doped diamond (CuNi-BDD) electrode using wet chemical seeding and electrodeposition. Annealing was performed to improve the stability of the modified electrode during elec-trolysis. Characterization of the modified BDD electrodes shows successful deposition without damage to the surface of the BDD support material. CO2ER was conducted with the CuNi-BDD electrode, which produces various important products including methanol, formic acid, CO, and CH4. Additionally, a different applied potential affected the product distribution. CO2ER was also conducted on the surfaces …

Degradation Of Cypermethrin By Indigenous Bacteria From Contaminated Soil, Indratin Indratin, Asep Kurnia, Sri Wahyuni

Makara Journal of Science

Soil contamination by pesticides should be controlled by using soil microbes with the ability to degrade pesticide resi-dues. Microorganisms that have adapted to a particular pesticide could accelerate the degradation process. The present study aimed to select bacteria in soil that could potentially degrade cypermethrin residues. Experiments were carried out in a laboratory and employed soil samples collected from the districts of Demak, Magelang, and Brebes. Each soil sample was initially tested for the presence of bacteria and pesticide residues. Indigenous microbes capable of living in contaminated environments were adapted to cypermethryn and cultured in the laboratory. Experiment was carried …

A Transcriptomic Exploration Of Hawaiian Drosophilid Development And Evolution, Madeline M. Chenevert

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One in four known species of fruit flies inhabit the Hawaiian Islands. From a small number of colonizing flies, a wide range of species evolved, some of which managed to reverse-colonize other continental environments. In order to explore the developmental pathways, which separate the Hawaiian Drosophila proper and the Scaptomyza group that contains reverse-colonized species, the transcriptomes of two better-known species in each group, Scaptomyza anomala and Drosophila grimshawi, were analyzed to find changes in gene expression between the two groups. This study describes a novel transcriptome for S. anomala studies as well as unusual changes in gene expression …

A Domain Specific Language For Digital Forensics And Incident Response Analysis, Christopher D. Stelly Dec 2019

A Domain Specific Language For Digital Forensics And Incident Response Analysis, Christopher D. Stelly

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One of the longstanding conceptual problems in digital forensics is the dichotomy between the need for verifiable and reproducible forensic investigations, and the lack of practical mechanisms to accomplish them. With nearly four decades of professional digital forensic practice, investigator notes are still the primary source of reproducibility information, and much of it is tied to the functions of specific, often proprietary, tools.

The lack of a formal means of specification for digital forensic operations results in three major problems. Specifically, there is a critical lack of:

a) standardized and automated means to scientifically verify accuracy of digital forensic tools; …

The Modular Approach To The Title Sequence, Nathan Sorrentino

Theses

Over the course of the past few decades, the role of opening title sequences has evolved from a simple objective to deliver top priority credits in the beginning of a film or show with basic to intermediate level branded graphics, to become a strong standing work of art within the feature itself. The old way of simply delivering a title has become something "anyone can do" on their home laptop computer with a consumer level NLE software. Today, it takes a high quality, intricately designed sequence to effectively hook and ensure the audience of the professional level of the film …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In the present study summarizes some crucial information on how to write inferences from literature review. The ability to make inferences helps readers develop an understanding of the author's perspective by grasping the subtle underlying meanings in a text. Without inference, readers usually end up translating a text word by word, missing out on the associations an author is trying to make. In the present study summarized that year-wise growth of literature, size of publications, Pattern of authorship, nativity of authors and categorization of review.

Italy And The Aquarius: A Migrant Crisis, Alexandra Larkin Dec 2019

Italy And The Aquarius: A Migrant Crisis, Alexandra Larkin

Pace International Law Review

Italian journalist Indro Montanelli once wrote, “[w]e Italians are tolerant and civil with all those who are different. Black, red, yellow. Especially when they are far away, at a telescopic distance from us.” In recent years, Italy had a resurgence of nationalist and far-right political leaders, who have taken an anti-immigration stance. Public interest in migration of refugees and asylum seekers is due both to media coverage of their stories and to litigation before international courts. One high-profile story that made headlines in the summer of 2018 was Italy’s treatment of the Aquarius, a rescue vessel operated by the …

Detection And Evaluation Of Print Quality Attributes, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

The method described in this document arose from a need to identify, monitor and resolve different

contributors to print quality (PQ) defects for small‐format dye sub photo printers as well as other types

of printers, depending on the implementation. A variety of targets were tested to flag and measure the

extent of issues like linefeed error and skew, both of which are typical of inkjet printing. Measuring

those targets typically require high resolution scanners with custom software to plot linefeed and

different types of visible skew. However, other issues aren’ as easily detected, much less measured;

these include misregistration, banding, …

Education Meant Risking Her Life: A Young Girl's Deadly Struggle To Learn, Emilio F. Iodice

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.

I speak not for myself but for those without voice... those who have fought for their rights... their right to live in peace, their right to be treated with dignity, their right to equality of opportunity, their right to be educated.

I don't want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered as the girl who stood up.

I think of it often and imagine the scene clearly. Even if they come to kill me, I will tell …

The Impact Of #Metoo: A Review Of Leaders With Supervisor Power On Employee Motivation, Mary Kovach Dec 2019

The Impact Of #Metoo: A Review Of Leaders With Supervisor Power On Employee Motivation, Mary Kovach

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This manuscript intends to advance existing research, specifically, in gender dissimilar supervisor-employee workplace dyads by integrating #MeToo with our existing knowledge concerning supervisor power and employee motivation. With the #MeToo movement re-energized in 2017, power in leadership positions was redefined. As a result, power held by a supervisor is likely to influence outcomes based on gender and the employees’ source of motivation. Supervisors who believed they were successful through influence were more likely to exhibit power to achieve success. However, employees’ source of the motivation was a moderating factor in those outcomes. Meaning, outcomes were dependent on the type of …

The Salience And Substance Of Spiritual Leadership, Joseph P. Hester Dec 2019

The Salience And Substance Of Spiritual Leadership, Joseph P. Hester

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The binary construct “spiritual-leadership” is a challenge to explain and a conundrum to unravel. Its inscrutability lies within our intrinsic nature and is, as we know, malleable, succumbing to cultural as well as value relativity. The spiritual lies deeply within our mental environment swaying perception, memory, judgment, reasoning, and volition. Few doubt the importance of the spiritual, but its substance is often ill-defined yielding more to religious belief and emotion than rational validation. Its entwinement with monotheistic belief appears to limit its more widespread application. Practically, the question is how the spiritual functions to expand and clarify our knowledge of …
