New Organizational Challenges In A Digital World: Securing Cloud Computing Usage And Reacting To Asset-Sharing Platform Disruptions, Sungjin Yoo Jan 2019

New Organizational Challenges In A Digital World: Securing Cloud Computing Usage And Reacting To Asset-Sharing Platform Disruptions, Sungjin Yoo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Information technology (IT) and IT-enabled business models are transforming the business ecosystem and posing new challenges for existing companies. This two-essay dissertation examines two such challenges: cloud security and the disruption of asset-sharing business models. The first essay examines how an organizations usage of cloud storage affects its likelihood of accidental breaches. The quasi-experiment in the U.S. healthcare sector reveals that organizations with higher levels of digitalization (i.e., Electronic Health Records levels) or those with more IT applications running on their internal data center are less likely to experience accidental breaches after using public cloud storage. We argue that digitalization and …

Medical Condition Or Childcare Choice? Breastfeeding And Lactation Discrimination After Young V. Ups, Madeleine Gyory Jan 2019

Medical Condition Or Childcare Choice? Breastfeeding And Lactation Discrimination After Young V. Ups, Madeleine Gyory

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Women returning to work after giving birth, and who wish to breastfeed their child often need modest adjustments to their job or workplace that allow them to pump breast milk at work, such as break time and a clean, private room. But what if an employer denies this request or fires a woman for asking? The federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act ("PDA") prohibits employers from discriminating against workers based on their pregnancy, childbirth, or "related medical conditions." Under the PDA, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in Young v. UPS, employers must grant pregnant workers accommodations only if they grant similar …

Where Do We Go From Here? A Semi-Autobiographical Performance Exploration Into The Therapeutic Benefits Of Theatre, Emma Elliott Jan 2019

Where Do We Go From Here? A Semi-Autobiographical Performance Exploration Into The Therapeutic Benefits Of Theatre, Emma Elliott

Scripps Senior Theses

My intention in this performance is to create a therapeutic theatrical process for myself and engage the audience with intense emotional vulnerability regarding the combination and validation of the nobody and performative self. I utilized both my vocal and acting training to work through emotional trauma that I have experienced and created a musical performance to demonstrate my journey of therapy and emotional reconciliation within myself and my family. I focused my research on using autobiographical performances to solidify and validate the identity of the performer to an audience. In doing so, this allows the performers to become the …

La Modernité Tunisienne Dévoilée : Une Étude Autour De La Femme Célibataire, Madison Wagner Jan 2019

La Modernité Tunisienne Dévoilée : Une Étude Autour De La Femme Célibataire, Madison Wagner

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explains recent accounts of discrimination and cutbacks in reproductive health spaces in Tunisia. Complicating dominant analyses, which attribute these events to the post-revolution political atmosphere which has allowed the proliferation of islamic extremism, I interpret these instances as a manifestation of a deeply rooted stigma against sexually active single women. I trace this stigma’s inception to the contradictory way that Habib Bourguiba conceptualized modernity after independence, and the responsibility he assigned to Tunisian women to embody that modernity. This responsibility remains salient today, and is putting Tunisian women in an increasingly untenable and vulnerable position.

After independence, Bourguiba …

Conjurer La Révolution : Sorciers, Païens Et Justice Sociale Dans La France Contemporaine, Alexandra Rivera Jan 2019

Conjurer La Révolution : Sorciers, Païens Et Justice Sociale Dans La France Contemporaine, Alexandra Rivera

Scripps Senior Theses

Witches and pagans have long faced historical persecution from the Catholic church and other patriarchal systems of power. In the eyes of mainstream society, they have been reduced to fragments of ancient history and entertaining media stereotypes. Real practitioners of witchcraft and paganism have remained fairly marginalized and trapped in the shadows, but this is starting to change. Witches and pagans have begun to involve themselves in large-scale political movements, combining spiritual power with direct action. While this phenomenon has a longer track record in the United States, in France it is extremely new. France is a country that has …

Individual Bodies, Informed Consent, And Self-Determination: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Vaccine Refusal Movement, Gretta Richardson Jan 2019

Individual Bodies, Informed Consent, And Self-Determination: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Vaccine Refusal Movement, Gretta Richardson

Scripps Senior Theses

This project sought to explore the narratives and rhetorical themes that permeate the anti-vaccination movement. Mass media has portrayed vaccine refusal groups as stupid, as conspiracy theorists, and as radically selfish. However, the data I analyzed from vaccine refusal nonprofits and advocacy groups supports that although these themes may appear to be radical, in reality, each is congruent with already present societal frameworks, particularly neoliberal social discourse and a preoccupation with the individualistic and self-determined health care rather than utilitarian or collective action.

Identification Of Antibiotic Ge37468a From Pseudonocardia Symbionts Of Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis Ants, Krithika Rao Jan 2019

Identification Of Antibiotic Ge37468a From Pseudonocardia Symbionts Of Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis Ants, Krithika Rao

Scripps Senior Theses

In response to the growing rates of antibiotic resistance in human bacterial pathogens, this study explores the natural products involved in the defensive symbiosis between actinobacteria and fungus-growing ants to uncover new potential antibiotics. This study also seeks to understand the function of natural antibiotics in their ecological contexts, especially those involved in defensive symbioses. Defensive symbiosis can be a beneficial platform for discovering useful antibiotics, because antibiotics in these relationships must be able to selectively inhibit enemies without harming hosts, and are therefore likely more specific and less toxic. Pseudonocardia sp. associated with Trachymyrmex septentrionalis ants demonstrated antibiotic activity …

The Gamification Of Modern Dating: A Feminist Analysis, Hannah Travis Jan 2019

The Gamification Of Modern Dating: A Feminist Analysis, Hannah Travis

Scripps Senior Theses

My project gg is a digitally rendered 360° animation of a tech-filled bedroom, accompanied by a joystick that can be used to navigate the 3D space. A visual comparison between multimedia games and modern dating culture, the bedroom scene draws parallels between the prioritization of male perspectives in fine art and digital media and the social prioritization of “masculine” qualities like logic over emotional vulnerability in the initialization of interpersonal relationships. My project investigates human motivations for playing games, both in the literal and idiomatic sense, using stereotypically feminized colors and symbols, to reclaim the patriarchal world of gaming for …

Deep Learning Of Human Apparent Age For The Detection Of Sexually Exploitative Imagery Of Children, Jared Rondeau Jan 2019

Deep Learning Of Human Apparent Age For The Detection Of Sexually Exploitative Imagery Of Children, Jared Rondeau

Open Access Master's Theses

Over the last decade, advancements in deep learning and computer vision have led to a tremendous growth in performance at the tasks of automated human age estimation and nudity detection. Modern machine learning models can predict whether or not an image contains nudity or the presence of a minor with startling accuracy. When used in conjunction, these technological advancements can be used to identify new instances of child pornography without ever coming into contact with the illicit material during model training.

In this thesis, a label distribution learning framework for modeling human apparent age is proposed. Instead of directly modeling …

Coculture Of Probiotic Bacteria In Algal Feedstocks For Disease Management In Bivalve Hatcheries, Samuel Hughes Jan 2019

Coculture Of Probiotic Bacteria In Algal Feedstocks For Disease Management In Bivalve Hatcheries, Samuel Hughes

Open Access Master's Theses

Bivalve hatcheries include microalgae culture operations as a food source for stock, and these algae cultures harbor dynamic bacterial communities. Because algae from these cultures and their commensal microbiota are distributed to stock larval tanks daily upon feeding, the presence of pathogenic Vibrio spp. in hatchery microalgae cultures is a threat to stock health and survival. This study investigates the algal/bacterial and bacterial/bacterial interaction between four popular species of microalgae feedstock, a Vibrio sp. of known pathogenicity to bivalves (V. coralliilyticus RE22 [RE22]), a probiotic marine bacterium with demonstrated effectiveness in reducing larval shellfish mortality in culture operations …

Correlations Of The Fear Of Missing Out & Interpersonal Stress With Female College Students’ Sleep, Victoria Elizabeth Russo Jan 2019

Correlations Of The Fear Of Missing Out & Interpersonal Stress With Female College Students’ Sleep, Victoria Elizabeth Russo

Open Access Master's Theses

Insomnia has been correlated with several negative mental and physical health outcomes in female undergraduate students, a population with increasing interest when considering those suffering with insomnia. Considering the increased vulnerability reported by college students, and the poor outcomes of insomnia, it is important to determine correlates of insomnia and which factors differentially impact college students’ development of insomnia. This study examined whether interpersonal stress or the fear of missing out (i.e. FoMO) was more highly correlated with insomnia in a population of female undergraduate students at the University of Rhode Island. This study also examined whether levels of interpersonal …

Assessing The Feasibility Of Intergrating An Inertial Navigation System And Dvl Into An A-Sized Auv, Anthony Scudere Jan 2019

Assessing The Feasibility Of Intergrating An Inertial Navigation System And Dvl Into An A-Sized Auv, Anthony Scudere

Open Access Master's Theses

This work accesses the feasibility of integrating an inertial navigation system (INS) and Doppler Velocity Logger (DVL) into an A-size AUV that is 4.875” in diameter. The mechanical integration solution developed during this effort focused on developing a low size, weight, power, and cost (i.e. low SWaP-C) navigation module for the Bluefin SandShark. Unlike other approaches currently pursuing this same navigation problem, including those attempting novel acoustic based tracking or novel hydrodynamic model based navigation, this effort, instead, integrated a novel navigational software system developed by Charles River Analytics, called CAMINO, into the available internal volume of an A-size …

Development Of Pediatric Anti-Hiv Formulations With Improved Dissolution Characteristics, Ryan Ivone Jan 2019

Development Of Pediatric Anti-Hiv Formulations With Improved Dissolution Characteristics, Ryan Ivone

Open Access Master's Theses

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) impacts up to 37 million people globally. Although not fatal on its own, HIV can develop into acquired immunodeficiency disease (AIDS), in which a person’s immune system becomes compromised. To date, there is no cure for HIV, although many treatment options are available. Despite their effectiveness, these treatments are commonly plagued by their inherent complexity. Factors such as doing regimen, pill burden, and undesirable side effects all contribute to variability in patient compliance, particularly in pediatric populations. Currently, there is no anti-HIV drug product readily available for pediatrics, despite close to 1.8 million children living …

A Pilot Qualitative Evaluation: Youth Perception On Plastic Straws Before And After Education Intervention, Elizabeth Smith Jan 2019

A Pilot Qualitative Evaluation: Youth Perception On Plastic Straws Before And After Education Intervention, Elizabeth Smith

Open Access Master's Theses

The objective of this work was to conduct a qualitative pilot study investigating the change in youth perceptions of single-use plastic straws before and after an educational intervention. To achieve this goal six female students, ranging from 12 to 14 years old, were interviewed on their knowledge about single-use plastic straws, their frequency of use, and their general understanding of current environmental issues. They were then shown two educational videos pertaining to the history of single-use plastic straws and their current usage status. After one week students were interviewed again and asked questions to reflect on the information shown to …

Damn Spot: Navigating Emotional Trauma In The Body, Emma M. Elliott Jan 2019

Damn Spot: Navigating Emotional Trauma In The Body, Emma M. Elliott

Scripps Senior Theses

I researched the history of emotional trauma and its portrayal in modern media and Shakespearean plays and created a film based on my personal experience with the topic. This film utilizes Shakespearean song and monologue from Hamlet and Macbeth to narrate the inner journey of a girl working through emotional trauma. We follow her as she feels the impact of her trauma in her body and as she tries to hide it from her friends and maintain a normal facade. This film does contain a fictionalized portrayal of an anxiety attack, so viewer discretion is advised. This project does not …

Foreign Corruption Of The Political Process Through Social Welfare Organizations, Norman I. Silber Jan 2019

Foreign Corruption Of The Political Process Through Social Welfare Organizations, Norman I. Silber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article examines alternative ways in which nonprofit social welfare organizations might be held accountable for channeling illegal foreign contributions to favored political candidates. Dangers intrinsic to allowing foreign countries, foreign nationals, and foreign corporations to influence the American electoral process have justified an outright prohibition on this conduct; clandestine channeling of foreign funds directly from political organizations or indirectly through religious organizations and into the hands of political candidates has been prosecuted previously. This exploration is prompted by the emerging possibility that during the Congressional elections of 2016 and the Presidential election of that year, large-scale, illegal donations from …

(Un)Civil Denaturalization, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Irina D. Manta Jan 2019

(Un)Civil Denaturalization, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Over the last fifty years, naturalized citizens in the United States were able to feel a sense of finality and security in their rights. Denaturalization, wielded frequently as a political tool in the McCarthy era, had become exceedingly rare. Indeed, denaturalization was best known as an adjunct to criminal proceedings brought against former Nazis and other war criminals who had entered the country under false pretenses.

Denaturalization is no longer so rare. Naturalized citizens’ sense of security has been fundamentally shaken by policy developments in the last five years. The number of denaturalization cases is growing, and if current trends …

Judge Damon Keith: The Judicial Antidote To Judge Julius Hoffman - Challenging Claims Of Unilateral Executive Authority, Ellen Yaroshefsky Jan 2019

Judge Damon Keith: The Judicial Antidote To Judge Julius Hoffman - Challenging Claims Of Unilateral Executive Authority, Ellen Yaroshefsky

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

From some of the highly-publicized trials of the 1960's - namely the trials of the Chicago Eight, Panther Twenty-One, Weathermen - we can draw indispensable lessons about the role of the judges in upholding and promoting a fair justice system. The contract to Judge Julius Hoffman's notorious injudicious conduct in the Chicago 8 case is the courageous, thoughtful Judge Damon Keith, in the less publicized White Panther case in Detroit in the early 1970's. Judge Keith's overriding sense of fairness, exemplified the best of judicial independence in considering President Nixon's claims of unilateral executive authority in US v. Ayers and …

Regulation Of Lawyers In Government Beyond The Representation Role, Ellen Yaroshefsky

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The article focuses on legal ethics issues for government lawyers in the U.S. Topics discussed include laws governing disciplinary consequence for lawyers who have engaged in criminal conduct under the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct; the U.S. President Donald Trump's relationship with intelligence agencies; and the U.S. Supreme Court case New York Times Co. v. Sullivan on defamation.

Explaining Criminal Sanctions In Intellectual Property Law, Irina D. Manta Jan 2019

Explaining Criminal Sanctions In Intellectual Property Law, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This symposium piece first seeks to unpack the relationship between intellectual property infringement and property offenses, and then to understand how the connection between the two has informed when the former is criminalized. The piece examines the porous nature of the boundary line between intangible and tangible resources, showing the at-times uncomfortable fit of the non-rivalrous label to intellectual property. An analysis of the respective harms of the two types of violations follows. This symposium contribution shows how lawmakers have treated patents differently from other forms of intellectual property by choosing not to criminalize their infringement, due both to utilitarian …

Tinder Lies, Irina D. Manta Jan 2019

Tinder Lies, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The rise of Internet dating—in recent years especially through the use of mobile-based apps such as Tinder or Bumble—forces us to reexamine an old problem in the law: how to handle sexual fraud. Many people with romantic aspirations today meet individuals with whom they do not share friends or acquaintances, which allows predators to spin tales as to their true identities and engage in sexual relations through the use of deceit on a greater scale than was previously practicable. Indeed, according to some studies, about eighty percent of individuals lie on at least some part of their online dating profiles, …

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The article explores a pluralistic approach to mediator ethics by examining a hypothetical case involving a classic dilemma confronted by practicing facilitative and transformative mediators. In the case, a divorced couple fight over full custody of their 11-year-old daughter. Also cited are the dilemma confronting the mediator as s/he is against the agreement reached by the couple, the nature of ethical dilemma, as well as the mediation codes and models.

Digging Up The Past: Archival Issues With Found Time Capsules At Illinois State University, April K. Anderson-Zorn Jan 2019

Digging Up The Past: Archival Issues With Found Time Capsules At Illinois State University, April K. Anderson-Zorn

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

During the demolition of an Illinois State University dormitory in the spring of 2016, workers discovered two time capsules. Tasked with their care, the university archivist looked for archival guidance on the safe handling of time capsules, best practices for working with their contents while balancing public demand for access. This case study examines the time capsule as an object of collective memory, how it fits into an institutional collection, the archivist’s work to document and recover materials in two recently discovered time capsules, and how to work with multiple institutional departments to make them accessible. It suggests best practices …

A Selected Comparison Of Music Librarians' And Musicologists' Self-Archiving Practices, Rachel E. Scott Jan 2019

A Selected Comparison Of Music Librarians' And Musicologists' Self-Archiving Practices, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The importance of open access (OA) advocacy is well-documented in the literature of academic librarianship, but previous research shows that librarians' OA behaviors are less conclusive. This article compares the self-archiving practices of music librarians and musicologists to see how librarians rank in OA adoption. Availability of articles published from 2013 to 2017 in six green OA journals in music librarianship and musicology indicates a need for continued advocacy and enhanced understanding of OA policies and opportunities.

Maternal Instinct: Exploring The Dynamic Between Mother And Non-Mother Characters In Contemporary Plays, Julia Moriarty Jan 2019

Maternal Instinct: Exploring The Dynamic Between Mother And Non-Mother Characters In Contemporary Plays, Julia Moriarty

Wayne State University Dissertations

What happens when radical intentions meet ingrained narrative patterns? Focusing on Birth and After Birth by Tina Howe, Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake) by Sheila Callaghan, and The How and the Why by Sarah Treem, this paper will unpack the way these texts address cultural attitudes surrounding motherhood and childlessness. A feminist lens will be applied to a dramaturgical study of these plays and the inherited legacies of mothers and non-mothers on stage with which these playwrights grapple. Despite their attempts to expose and dismantle the oppressive cycle of essentialized maternity, these plays all utilize a protagonist/antagonist structure to …

Sdn Testbed For Evaluation Of Large Exo-Atmospheric Emp Attacks, Diogo Oliveira, Nasir Ghani, Majeed M. Hayat, Jorge Crichigno, Elias Bou-Harb

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Large-scale nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attacks and natural disasters can cause extensive network failures across wide geographic regions. Although operational networks are designed to handle most single or dual faults, recent efforts have also focused on more capable multi-failure disaster recovery schemes. Concurrently, advances in software-defined networking (SDN) technologies have delivered highly-adaptable frameworks for implementing new and improved service provisioning and recovery paradigms in real-world settings. Hence this study leverages these new innovations to develop a robust disaster recovery (counter-EMP) framework for large backbone networks. Detailed findings from an experimental testbed study are also presented.
