Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce
English Faculty Publications
This paper investigated the overall experience of learners with e-literature (e-lit). E-lit as a new form of economy in the field of literature and humanities prompted authors and scholars to create newborn sites of learning — videograph fiction, kinetic poetry, text tula (hyperpoem), and hyperfiction. Thus, the digitization of resource materials in literature led the researchers to investigate the outer circle of some of these new born sites by focusing on the following: readers and their experiences on understanding and learning through e-lit; textual which is concerned with performance and complexities of using this new form of literature; and cultural …

Personality Prediction Through Curriculam Vitae Analysis Involving Password Encryption And Prediction Analysis, Gagandeep Kaur, Shruti Maheshwari
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A recruitment process requires an eligibility check, an aptitude evaluation and a psychometric analysis of prospective candidates. The work puts forward an application where the system allows employers to post new job offerings and registered candidates can apply. The application estimates applicant’s emotional aptitude through a psychometric analysis based on a test whereas the professional standard is verified via a technical aptitude test. OCEAN Model is used to assess emotional quotient and predict the personality traits. Machine learning techniques such as Logistic Regression are used for modelling the personality predictor. The details of the candidates are kept secure by using …
Measurement Of Antibacterial Properties Of Foil‑Backed Electrospun Nanofibers, Mary Ann Wagner-Graham, Herbert Barndt, Mark Andrew Sunderland
Measurement Of Antibacterial Properties Of Foil‑Backed Electrospun Nanofibers, Mary Ann Wagner-Graham, Herbert Barndt, Mark Andrew Sunderland
College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers
Current methodologies for evaluation of antibacterial properties of traditional textiles are not applicable to foil‑backed, poorly‑absorbent electrospun nanofiber materials, since existing test methods require absorbent fabrics. Since electrospun nanofibers are adhered to the foil backing only by electrostatic interactions, methods used to evaluate antibacterial properties of surfaces cannot be used because these protocols cause the nanofibers to lift from the foil backing. Therefore, a novel method for measurement of the antibacterial properties of electrospun metallic foil‑backed nanofiber materials was developed. This method indicated that acetate‑based nanofibers manufactured to contain 5 to 30 weight percent of cold‑pressed hemp seed oil or …

Social-Emotional Learning In Middle School: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation Of The Strong Kids Program, Erin Larsen Neth
Social-Emotional Learning In Middle School: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation Of The Strong Kids Program, Erin Larsen Neth
Theses and Dissertations
Strong Kids is a social-emotional curriculum designed to reduce students' externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Strong Kids has shown promise in elementary school, but this was the first study to evaluate the newly updated version of the intervention in a middle school setting. The curriculum was implemented by two general education teachers with students at-risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. A mixed method design was used to evaluate outcomes with eight middle school students. Overall findings suggest that Strong Kids was effective at improving students' social emotional knowledge and internalizing symptoms; however, there were no significant changes in students' externalizing symptoms. …

Why The Crackling Deformations Of Single Crystals, Metallic Glasses, Rock, Granular Materials, And The Earth’S Crust Are So Surprisingly Similar, Karin A. Dahmen, Jonathan T. Uhl, Wendelin J. Wright
Faculty Journal Articles
Recent experiments show that the deformation properties of a wide range of solid materials are surprisingly similar. When slowly pushed, they deform via intermittent slips, similar to earthquakes. The statistics of these slips agree across vastly different structures and scales. A simple analytical model explains why this is the case. The model also predicts which statistical quantities are independent of the microscopic details (i.e., they are "universal"), and which ones are not. The model provides physical intuition for the deformation mechanism and new ways to organize experimental data. It also shows how to transfer results from one scale to another. …

Infertility can place a significant burden on couples and individuals when trying to conceive. Approximately 20-30% of all cases of infertility are due to male-related factors. Whatever the cause of difficulty in conceiving, little is known about how men find support when dealing with fertility issues, or when or how online resources are being used. This paper reports on a qualitative study of anonymous online posts (N=603) from forums related to fertility that are used by men. We analysed this data using thematic analysis to understand how men are using online forums as a resource when experiencing fertility issues. We …

Social Media Utilization For Policing And Crime Prevention In Lagos, Nigeria, Sunmisola Eniola Peters, Usman Adekunle Ojedokun
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The benefits embedded in the use of social media for policing and law enforcement are increasingly becoming recognized globally. Despite the growing popularity of social media in Nigeria, empirical information on the disposition of police personnel toward their adoption for policing and crime investigation are generally scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the use of social media for policing and crime prevention among 122 police officers serving at the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command. The research design was descriptive and cross-sectional. Survey questionnaire and key informant interview methods were employed for data collection. Results indicated that respondents were generally …

Selective Notifications Based On Location And Calendar Information, Jeff Palm
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques to notify individuals that are likely to have been present at a particular location, e.g., a meeting room, based on calendar information, obtained with user permission. For example, a corporate campus can include several meeting rooms with associated calendars that are used for meetings. A person that finds a forgotten item in a meeting room can access a portal to report the item, along with the location and time that the item was found, e.g., via a portal. The portal can then access, with user permission, calendar information of the meeting room and/or other individuals to …

Patient Experience Journal
Patient engagement is a mechanism used to facilitate person-centred care, however, has not been realized in all patient populations. Often, many marginalized populations still remain under- and/or never-engaged. The purpose of this systematic review was to: 1) identify methods or interventions that have been used to engage under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services and 2) identify outcomes that are associated with engaging under- and/or never-engaged populations in health services. A comprehensive search using the Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases was conducted to examine literature between January 2002 and January 2015. Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Data was …

Is It Fair To Compare? A Patient And Family Experience Of Two Healthcare Systems And Neurosurgical Teams Within A Two-Week Period, Laura Miller Cpxp
Patient Experience Journal
As the mother of a 28-year-old son with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and as a healthcare consultant focused on patient experience and professional development, I have a unique perspective and skill set. Recently he experienced symptoms that included an excruciating headache, neck pain and lethargy. Fearing his ventriculoperitoneal shunt had malfunctioned, he went to the emergency room and was later admitted on the neuro inpatient floor for a three-day hospitalization. His original shunt had been placed in 1991, and he never had an issue with until August 2018. While in the hospital, he was informed that he was no longer …

Project Description – Blended learning: Teacher vs. Student
Blended Learning is commonly referred to as “a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through the online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path and/or pace” (Horn & Staker, 2012). This means that learning can take place virtually anywhere with increased supervision at a coffee shop, a public library, or any other educational setting that allows connectivity to the internet. The constant development of technology permits the inclusion of content through various forms of blended learning and online …

The foundation of instructional design and e-learning incorporates the distribution of digital media elements such as educational posters. An educational poster includes research into the topic, problem-solving, decision making, communication of information, locating resources, work with a digital camera, and utilization of powerful software such as Adobe Photoshop; all the while following the foundation principles of PARC. PARC stands for proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast. Proximity indicates that objects are grouped together suggesting a close relationship with one another and can create a sense of balance, harmony, or even discord. Alignment gives organization and meaning to the project. Repetition unites …

James Madison University MALA (Madison Academic Library Associates) graduate assistants worked together with Special Collections and the library’s Outreach department to help market and support JMU’s First Annual Pulp Studies Symposium in Fall 2016. Social, digital, and physical ultimately came together to highlight and surface Special Collections’ extensive holdings of pulp magazines. Hashtags, archival ephemera, and everything in between melded in this multi-part exhibit. Since one of the least known and studied genre of pulps are the romance pulps, Love Story Magazine was the focus of our social media outreach project. Its florid narratives led organically to the idea of …
Drying Shrinkage Of Hardened Cement Paste And Its Relationship To The Microstructure, Xin Wang, Chaojun Wan, Xiaojing Zhang, Heng Chen
Drying Shrinkage Of Hardened Cement Paste And Its Relationship To The Microstructure, Xin Wang, Chaojun Wan, Xiaojing Zhang, Heng Chen
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The aim of the present study is to relate microstructure to the drying shrinkage of hardened cement paste. Three microstructural features, calcium silicate hydrate(C-S-H), calcium hydroxide(CH) and pore structure were studied. A new method to determine the C-S-H content of hardened cement paste is presented. Drying shrinkage behavior of cement pastes were investigated by drying specimens through successive steps of RH 100% to 7% RH and re-saturating the specimens. The total shrinkage of cement paste after drying to 7% RH and irreversible shrinkage were decreased with the increasing amount of C-S-H and CH. Prolonged curing resulted in a paste with …
