Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Experiments with bacteria in culture have shown that they often display “feast and famine” strategies that allow them to respond with fast growth upon pulses in resource availability, and enter a growth-arrest state when resources are limiting. Although feast responses have been observed in natural communities upon enrichment, it is unknown whether this blooming ability is maintained after long periods of starvation, particularly in systems that are energy limited like the bathypelagic ocean. Here we combined bulk and single-cell activity measurements with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to explore the response of a bathypelagic community, that had been starved for …

From Socioeconomic Disadvantage To Obesity: The Mediating Role Of Psychological Distress And Emotional Eating, Jade Spinosa, Paul Christiansen, Joanne M. Dickson, Valentina Lorenzetti, Charlotte A. Hardman
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Objective: Lower socioeconomic status is robustly associated with obesity; however, the underpinning psychological mechanisms remain unclear. The current study sought to determine whether the relationship between lower socioeconomic status and obesity is explained by psychological distress and subsequent emotional eating as a coping strategy. It also examined whether psychological resilience plays a protective role in this pathway. Methods: Participants (N = 150) from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds completed questionnaire measures of psychological distress, emotional eating, and resilience. They reported their income and education level as an indicator of socioeconomic status and their height and weight in order to calculate …
Identity, Language And Collaboration In Indigenous Music, Clint Bracknell
Identity, Language And Collaboration In Indigenous Music, Clint Bracknell
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
I begin this chapter by arguing against any sort of prescriptive definitions for Indigenous Australian music. I will then illustrate change in public discourse on Indigenous music by examining the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards for Best Indigenous Release (1987-1998) and for Best World Music Album (1999-2016). The chapter then proceeds to highlight two increasingly common features of the work of Indigenous musical artists: reference to one's specific Indigenous cultural identity (e.g. Noongar, Bundjalung, Yorta Yorta) in popular music performance, and writing and performing popular music in Indigenous languages. The chapter concludes by illustrating how frequently Indigenous artists collaborate …

Recent Climate-Driven Ecological Change Across A Continent As Perceived Through Local Ecological Knowledge, Suzanne M. Prober, Nat Raisbeck-Brown, Natasha B. Porter, Kristen J. Williams, Zoe Leviston, Fiona Dickson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Documenting effects of climate change is an important step towards designing mitigation and adaptation responses. Impacts of climate change on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems have been well-documented in the Northern Hemisphere, but long-term data to detect change in the Southern Hemisphere are limited, and some types of change are generally difficult to measure. Here we present a novel approach using local ecological knowledge to facilitate a continent-scale view of climate change impacts on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystems that people have perceived in Australia. We sought local knowledge using a national web-based survey, targeting respondents with close links to the environment …

Role Of Lactic Acidosis As A Mediator Of Sprint-Mediated Nausea, Robert J. Merrells, Ashely J. Cripps, Paola T. Chivers, Paul A. Fournier
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between nausea level and lactic acidosis during recovery from sprinting. In all, 13 recreationally active males completed a 60 s bout of maximal intensity cycling. Prior to and for 45 min following exercise, blood pH, pCO2, and lactate levels were measured together with nausea. In response to sprinting, nausea, lactate, and H+ concentrations increased and remained elevated for at least 10 min (p < .001), whereas pCO2 increased only transiently (p < .001) before falling below pre‐exercise levels (p < .001), with all these variables returning toward pre‐exercise levels during recovery. Both measures of nausea adopted for analyses (nausea profile, NP; visual analogue scale, VAS), demonstrated significant repeated measures correlation (rmcorr) post‐exercise between nausea and plasma lactate (VAS and NPrrm> 0.595, p < .0001) and H+ concentrations (VAS and NPrrm> 0.689, p < .0001), but an inconsistent relationship with pCO2 (VAS rrm = …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The safety of oats for people with celiac disease remains unresolved. While oats have attractive nutritional properties that can improve the quality and palatability of the restrictive, low fiber gluten-free diet, rigorous feeding studies to address their safety in celiac disease are needed. Assessing the oat prolamin proteins (avenins) in isolation and controlling for gluten contamination and other oat components such as fiber that can cause non-specific effects and symptoms is crucial. Further, the avenin should contain all reported immunogenic T cell epitopes, and be deliverable at a dose that enables biological responses to be correlated with clinical effects. To …

Taking Exception To Human Exceptionalism, Carrie P. Freeman
Taking Exception To Human Exceptionalism, Carrie P. Freeman
Animal Sentience
Chapman & Huffman refute common claims used to justify human species distinctions, and they critique the animal cruelty that has resulted from this privileged status. I raise related questions for further study of the roots of human exceptionalism and about whether aspiring to be more like our fellow animals might be part of the solution.
Human And Nonhuman Animals: Towards Equality, Catherine Price
Human And Nonhuman Animals: Towards Equality, Catherine Price
Animal Sentience
Chapman & Huffman argue that we should not consider humans as unique and superior to nonhuman animals. Ecofeminism advocates the respectful treatment of humans, nonhuman animals, and the environment.
Anthropocentrism: Practical Remedies Needed, Helen Kopnina
Anthropocentrism: Practical Remedies Needed, Helen Kopnina
Animal Sentience
It is true that one of the harmful consequences of creating categories where one group is unique and superior to others is that it justifies discriminating against the inferior groups. And outright abuse of nonhuman animals is indeed morally unjustifiable. But what is to be done about it?

Animal Sentience
The world and its troubles don't need unfounded denials of human uniqueness.
Across The Great Divide, Debra Merskin
Across The Great Divide, Debra Merskin
Animal Sentience
Chapman & Huffman’s target article calls for a reevaluation of claims of human uniqueness and superiority. It also adds to the literature on how species differences, as Darwin noted, are more of degree than kind. The threats to environmental health and species survival are a consequence of excluding nonhuman animals from moral concern and consideration. The theory of intersectionality should include speciesism in the array of discriminatory practices.

From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
From Collaborative To Collegial Communities: Transitioning From Student Affairs Practitioner To Faculty, Michelle Lea Boettcher, Dena Kniess, Mimi Benjamin
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
While student affairs (SA) practitioner expertise can inform a faculty member’s knowledge in the classroom, the transition into a tenure-track faculty role from student affairs administrative roles is complex. One of the differences new faculty members with SA administrator backgrounds experience is a change in the work community and shift from collaborative to collegial cultures. While studies have examined the transition of student affairs professionals from graduate programs to full time student affairs practitioner roles and graduate students into the professoriate, there is limited scholarship on the transitional experiences of student affairs practitioners moving into faculty positions. This qualitative study …

Animal Sentience
Several commentators on Mather’s target article discuss the challenges of finding adequate cognitive methods and concepts for accessing the mind and experience of octopuses. Building on Godfrey-Smith’s commentary, we propose aesthetics as a way. The arts provide means to perform what Godfrey-Smith calls an “imaginative leap” to access the experience of octopuses, especially mimesis. We are trying to do this in our current project Okto-Lab. Laboratory for Octopus Aesthetics.

Exploring Transition Metal Chalcogenides For Bio Sensing And Environmental Remediation, Bahareh Golrokh Amin
Exploring Transition Metal Chalcogenides For Bio Sensing And Environmental Remediation, Bahareh Golrokh Amin
Doctoral Dissertations
“Electrocatalysts play an inevitable role in many applications including energy storage, energy conversion, and biosensing. The state-of-the-art noble metal-based electrocatalysts have long been used in full water splitting, non-enzymatic glucose sensing, and supercapacitors. However, scarcity and high cost of noble metals restrict utilization of such electrocatalysts in large-scale implementations. Transition metal-based electrodes have been considered as a potential solution to address these drawbacks as well as to enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this work, applicability of non-oxidic transition metal based electrocatalysts is evaluated. Transition metal chalcogenides are expected to have high catalytic performance owing to their facilitated electron cloud delocalization …
Plasmonic Metamaterial For Structural Color Printing And Spontaneous Emission Control, Wei Wang
Plasmonic Metamaterial For Structural Color Printing And Spontaneous Emission Control, Wei Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
”Plasmon polaritons or plasmons are a collective oscillation movement of free electrons in metal at optical frequencies. The frequency-dependent complex dielectric function makes the metal property at optical frequencies behave totally different with that at other spectral ranges with lower frequency such as infrared and microwaves. This novel property makes the so called plasmonics or nanoplasmonics a rapid growing research field over the past few years. Many innovative concepts and applications have been developed such as perfect absorber, structural color printing, and quantum emitter spontaneous emission enhancement.
In this dissertation two of the most important applications will be addressed. The …
Characterization Of Aerosols In An Underground Mine, Arash A. Habibi
Characterization Of Aerosols In An Underground Mine, Arash A. Habibi
Doctoral Dissertations
“Diesel-powered engines are a common source of submicron carbon-rich particles. Characterizing morphological and physical attributes of diesel agglomerates is therefore of great importance to be able to identify the source and improve removal technology. Size-segregated sampling was conducted in two phases of underground experiments. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and fast mobility particle sizers were used to determine the size distribution of agglomerates based on particle mobility and projected area diameter. Controlled zone sampling test results were used to determine the morphological characteristics of agglomerates for specific types of diesel equipment both with and without removal strategies. Changes in fractal dimension, …
On Developing A Graphitic White Iron For Metal-To-Metal Wear Systems, Jie Wan
On Developing A Graphitic White Iron For Metal-To-Metal Wear Systems, Jie Wan
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research addressed heat dissipation issues related to the adhesive wear observed in metal-to-metal wear systems, by developing a graphitic white iron to increase thermal diffusivity of the wear components. One of the premium materials commonly used in current metal-to-metal wear systems is Fe15Mo18Cr and field returned parts were characterized as part of this study. Failure analysis showed that white layers were formed on the wearing surface due to frictional heating and surface deformation. These white layers were extremely brittle and could be fractured easily during use, which in turn led to micro-galling defects that caused parts leakage. Increasing thermal …
Ferrite Characterization Techniques & Particle Simulations For Semiconductor Devices, Nicholas Erickson
Ferrite Characterization Techniques & Particle Simulations For Semiconductor Devices, Nicholas Erickson
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation is divided into three papers, covering two major topics. The first topic, techniques for ferrite characterization, is discussed over the course of two papers. The second topic, particle simulations for semiconductor devices, is discussed in the last paper. In the first paper, the method for extracting permeability from ferrite materials is discussed for the Keysight 16454A permeability extraction fixture, where the ferrite material to be characterized is assumed to be homogeneous. Then the method is updated to account for layered materials. The updated method is verified through full-wave simulations. In the second paper, a planar printed circuit board …
Pressure Versus Impulse Graph For Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury And Correlation To Observable Blast Injuries, Barbara Rutter
Pressure Versus Impulse Graph For Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury And Correlation To Observable Blast Injuries, Barbara Rutter
Doctoral Dissertations
"With the increased use of explosive devices in combat, blast induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has become one of the signature wounds in current conflicts. Animal studies have been conducted to understand the mechanisms in the brain and a pressure versus time graph has been produced. However, the role of impulse in bTBIs has not been thoroughly investigated for animals or human beings.
This research proposes a new method of presenting bTBI data by using a pressure versus impulse (P-I) graph. P-I graphs have been found useful in presenting lung lethality regions and building damage thresholds. To present the animal …

"With the pervasive use of mobile devices, social media, home assistants, and smart devices, the idea of individual privacy is fading. More than ever, the public is giving up personal information in order to take advantage of what is now considered every day conveniences and ignoring the consequences. Even seemingly harmless information is making headlines for its unauthorized use (18). Among this data is user trajectory data which can be described as a user's location information over a time period (6). This data is generated whenever users access their devices to record their location, query the location of a point …
Underwater Acoustic Communications And Adaptive Signal Processing, Mohammadhossein Behgam
Underwater Acoustic Communications And Adaptive Signal Processing, Mohammadhossein Behgam
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation proposes three new algorithms for underwater acoustic wireless communications. One is a new tail-biting circular MAP decoder for full tail-biting convolution (FTBC) codes for very short data blocks intended for Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT). The proposed algorithm was evaluated by ocean experiments and computer simulations on both Physical (PHY) and Media access control (MAC) layers. The ocean experimental results show that without channel equalization, the full tail-biting convolution (FTBC) codes with short packet lengths not only can perform similarly to zero-tailing convolution (ZTC) codes in terms of bit error rate (BER) in the PHY layer. Computer simulation …
