Biochemical Characterization Of Rv2633c From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis And The Effects Of Mutagenesis On Iron Binding, Kyle Strickland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a pathogenic bacterium that is the causative agent of the disease Tuberculosis (TB). TB kills an estimated 1.8 million people annually and roughly one third of the world's population carries Mtb in a dormant state. Drug resistant Mtb strains are on the rise, thus a new method of combating this disease is paramount. Mtb survival inside of macrophages requires overcoming various stressors such as; iron restriction, reactive oxygen species, and hypoxic conditions. Mtb employs the use of catalases, nitric oxide reductase, superoxide dismutase, and siderophores to aid in survival. These functions have also been found in …

A Comparison Of Self-Service Technologies (Ssts) In The U.S. Restaurant Industry: An Evaluation Of Consumer Perceived Value, Satisfaction, And Behavioral Intentions, Motaz Zaitouni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Innovation in technology has been growing rapidly in recent years. Many restaurants have been utilizing different types of self-service technologies (SSTs) to enhance their operations and customer satisfaction. Despite, the rapid spread of SSTs in the restaurant industry, very limited empirical research has been conducted to evaluate the influence of SSTs type on customer dining experience. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to examine the SSTs values that influence restaurant customers' satisfaction and their decision to continue to reuse SSTs. More specifically, this study utilized the Theory of Consumption Values (TCV) to examine consumers' perception of the SST values …

Thermo- And Zero-Valent Iron-Activated Persulfate Oxidation Of 3,5,6-Trichloro-2-Pyridinol In An Aquatic System, Roaa Mogharbel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The compound 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a metabolite of the broad-spectrum organophosphorous insecticide chlorpyrifos, is both more persistent and more water soluble than its parent compound. This difference, which allows TCPy to more readily leach into surface water and groundwater, has led to widespread contamination of TCPy in soils and aquatic environments. In this study, the degradation of TCPy by sulfate radicals was evaluated using zero valent ironactivated persulfate systems and heat activated persulfate system in aqueous media. Response surface methodology coupled with Box-Behnken design was applied in these studies to evaluate the effects of the independent variables on the mineralization of …

Comparative Analysis Of Zebrafish And Planarian Model Systems For Developmental Neurotoxicity Screens Using An 87-Compound Library, D. Hagstrom, L. Truong, S. Zhang, R. Tanguay, Eva-Maria S. Collins

Biology Faculty Works

There is a clear need to establish and validate new methodologies to more quickly and efficiently screen chemicals for potential toxic effects, particularly on development. The emergence of alternative animal systems for rapid toxicology screens presents valuable opportunities to evaluate how systems complement each other. In this article, we compare a chemical library of 87-compounds in two such systems, developing zebrafish and freshwater planarians, by screening for developmental neurotoxic effects. We show that the systems’ toxicological profiles are complementary to each other, with zebrafish yielding more detailed morphological endpoints and planarians more behavioral endpoints. Overall, zebrafish was more sensitive to …

Blood, Water And Mars: Soviet Science And The Alchemy For A New Man, Sophie Y. Andarovna Jan 2019

Blood, Water And Mars: Soviet Science And The Alchemy For A New Man, Sophie Y. Andarovna

All Master's Theses

The themes of blood, water and Mars in Soviet science and technology show the strong utopian and even religious foundations of Soviet society, which invariably centered around forging a new environment and, in so doing, a new variety of human to inhabit it. In the minds and experiments of some of the radical men behind Russia’s Revolution, blood was to create a more advanced, biologically “equal” humanity capable of potential immortality, while water was harnessed with the millenarian aim of transforming the Soviet Union’s vast landscape into fields of bountiful fertility, as well as cities of efficient industry. Mars represents …

A Gendered Refutation Of Epiphenomenal Norms Through The Median Voter: A Case Study Of India's Cedaw Compliance, Shritha Vasudevan

Emory International Law Review

This Article hypothesizes on the reasons behind India¿s Declaration to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Article 5(a) as a manifestation of the intensive compliance deadlock over its due diligence obligation which castigates traditional, cultural attitudes as responsible for gender-based violence. A qualitative analysis of two historical moments when India was confronted with an empirical conflict of the CEDAW¿s due diligence obligation: the sati of Roop Kanwar in 1987 and the Shah Bano judgment in 1985, even prior to its CEDAW accession in 1993 is undertaken, to argue that the rational choice theory …

“Islamic Tradition”: Questioning The Bosnian Model, Zora Hesová

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Debates over whether there can be a ‘European Islam’ have not ceased since 1990s when the term was coined by Bassam Tibi. This paper aims to question the idea of a ‘progress towards a liberal Islam’ as being too straightforward by providing historical, political and also intellectual context to the practice of Islam in Bosnia and, above all, by analysing the present logic of looking for a particular Islamic identity.

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani Jan 2019

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biocides are antimicrobial compounds that are designed to kill diverse groups of microbes in an untargeted fashion. Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA are commonly used to manage microbial growth in different industries. It is possible that biocide use may result in the development of bacterial resistance. However, resistance to DBNPA is believed to be limited under normal use conditions. We isolated a number of bacteria from produced water from a hydraulically fractured site in West Texas. We then tested the ability of these isolates to resist Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA. In this study, we found that these isolates have varying resistance to these …

Ligo Analogy Lab—A Set Of Undergraduate Lab Experiments To Demonstrate Some Principles Of Gravitational Wave Detection, Dennis Ugolini, Hanna Rafferty, M. Winter, C. Rockstuhl, A. Bergmann

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

The first direct detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in September 2015 proved their existence, as predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, and ushered in the era of gravitational-wave interferometry. In this article, we present a set of lab course experiments at different levels of advancement, which give students insight into the basic LIGO operating principle and advanced detection techniques. Starting with methods for folding an optical cavity, we advance to analogy experiments with sound waves that can be detected with a Michelson interferometer with an optical cavity arm. In that experiment, students also …

Arno Schmidt Among Comic Commentators On The Book Of Mormon, John Durham Peters Jan 2019

Arno Schmidt Among Comic Commentators On The Book Of Mormon, John Durham Peters

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) was one of the most important, prolific, and original of postwar German authors. His magnum opus, Zettels Traum (1970), appeared in 1,360 large-font, signed typescript copies that each weighed 12 kilos and resembled another intimidating modernist text, James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, in its experiments with genre, fascinating density, multilingual citations, jokey allusiveness, and mythic grandeur. Like Joyce, Schmidt pushed boundaries of all kinds and sometimes got into hot water with those who found his writings sexually and religiously indecent. As an author, his work is hard to classify; he is sometimes called an "avant-garde traditionalist:' In personal …

The Book Of Mormon, Arno Schmidt, Hans-Wilhelm Kelling, Translator, John Durham Peters, Translator, Joseph M. Spencer, Translator

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

If perhaps I am certain of nothing else, I am indeed certain of one thing: I cannot resist holy books. Understand me correctly, however. I regard all of them highly-the fiery bass voices of the Qur'an; Gautama's all-tolerating claptrap of wisdom; the large compendium of Jewish cultural history called the Old Testament-but I refuse steadfastly to link the word "truth'' with any of them. Whoever imagines that he possesses the truth has lost it in that very same instant. Truth has no meaning for us. Nothing would be more unfortunate than some kind of 5 percent clause of the Spirit, …

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power Jan 2019

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article attempts to delineate the scope of a municipality’s legal power within the realm of environmental management. Part one of this article looks at the legal position of a municipal government in the Canadian constitutional framework. The authors note that municipalities are creatures of statute and their available powers are tightly prescribed by legislation. Part two of this article is a case study of the City of Toronto's efforts to manage pollution in the Great Lake region, particularly with respect to Lake Ontario. Despite the limits to a municipality’s power, the authors argue that many effective pollution prevention strategies …
