What "Sesame Street" Can Teach Us About Hbo, Shayne Pepper Nov 2019

What "Sesame Street" Can Teach Us About Hbo, Shayne Pepper

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

In late 2015, news headlines announced HBO’s acquisition of first-run rights to air new episodes of Sesame Street nine months before their PBS debut. Some critics joked that it would birth an edgier version of Sesame Street for HBO, while others lamented the apparent stratification of children’s programming that such a move could create between kids whose families could afford cable and those whose could not. While most articles noted that HBO’s previous work with Muppets in Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock (1983 – 1987), many conveyed a tone of surprise about this brave new world of Sesame Street on subscription …

In Fall 2017 Jim Blair founded Northeastern’s inaugural 10-Minute Playwriting festival and contest entitled Nuevas Voces or “new voices” in collaboration with Sarah Fabian from the CMT Department and Christie Miller from CAPE: Community and Professional Education. Working to celebrate all new voices, the new play festival is structured to feature the work in three categories: current high school students, current college students (ages 17-28), and the greater community (anyone who is 29+). This year’s Nuevas Voces did not disappoint! Judges included: Assistant Professors Sarah Fabian, and Adam Goldstein, Professor Emeritus Rodney Higginbotham, and recent NEIU graduate and prior Nuevas …

Sport, Representation And Culture In The Modern World, 1920-2020, Steven A. Riess Nov 2019

Sport, Representation And Culture In The Modern World, 1920-2020, Steven A. Riess

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Cultural historians study the change of human civilization over time. They focus on people’s beliefs, rituals, ideas, identity, social norms, institutions, and materials, with particular attention to the meanings of that culture’s elements (Hutton 1981). Cultural historians before World War II focused on high culture, but thereafter, because of the influence of cultural anthropology, they began to study popular culture, that include every day experiences and artifacts that express mass values and attitudes. Since the late 1960s, scholars have studied sport’s interaction with high and low culture, and also sport as an independent element of culture with s symbolic acts, …

Theatrical Scenic Design: Creating The Physical World Of The Play, Sarah J. Fabian Nov 2019

Theatrical Scenic Design: Creating The Physical World Of The Play, Sarah J. Fabian

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Scenic design is an important component of any theatrical production as almost every production will have some form of a set, however minimal. Scenery can be abstract, photo-realistic, or anywhere in between. The primary function of the scenic design is to provide the audience with some context of location(s) for the theatrical work. However, the most important element of any scenic design is to impart a point of view about the story and the world of the play, sharing an emotional and textural experience to the production – Are there moments of surprise, something that suddenly appears that wasn’t previously …

Finding Your Voice: Toward An Individualized And Humanized Approach To Dialectical Praxis In The Professional Theatre Rehearsal Room, Adam Goldstein Nov 2019

Finding Your Voice: Toward An Individualized And Humanized Approach To Dialectical Praxis In The Professional Theatre Rehearsal Room, Adam Goldstein

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

As a professional accents and dialect coach, I have long worked toward defining the most dynamic function of the coach in the room and toward shaping a personal methodology to grant life and “authenticity” to our vocal work as actors. Traditional dialectical approaches often stipulate an exacting adherence to static, generalized representation of dialectical populations via generic sound structures, demand for phonetic fluency, and a right/wrong approach to dialect training. This methodology often breeds self-consciousness in the actor and a tendency to get caught in the intellectual aspect of rather than embodiment within a given dialect. A contemporary approach to …

Moving Forward, Living Backward, Or Just Standing Still?: Newspaper Theatre, Critical Race Theory, And Commemorating The Wade-Braden Trial In Louisville, Kentucky, Amy Steiger

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

This essay, with a link to the full group-devised script of "Moving Forward, Living Backward, or Just Standing Still?" describes how graduate students entering an MFA acting program devised a performance inspired by the WPA’s Living Newspapers and Boal’s Newspaper Theatre to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Wade-Braden housing case in Louisville, KY. Drawing on critical race theory, I argue that the process, together with the script itself, offers an example of several ways performance can be used to remember and re-imagine a community’s racial history and future. It commemorated the trial itself, creating a public reminder of Louisville’s …

Digital Role-Playing Games As Means For Dialogue And Change For Marginalized Teachers, Jonathan Mendels, Amit Schejter Nov 2019

Digital Role-Playing Games As Means For Dialogue And Change For Marginalized Teachers, Jonathan Mendels, Amit Schejter

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

This study presents a theoretical model that incorporates the theories of Paulo Freire, Augusto Boal and Amartya Sen and uses their ideas to create an innovative digital role-playing game for teachers on ‘To-Be-Education,’ a platform originally designed for teacher-student role-playing . We then demonstrate how Sen’s ‘capabilities approach’, Freire’s ‘pedagogy of hope’ and Boal’s ‘theatre of the oppressed’ are adapted to tools of empowerment for Arab-Israeli teachers, who belong to a community marginalized by State policies. The teachers design their own games and base the scenarios on their own real educational and professional dilemmas. They then re-enact these situations to …

Architected Polymer Foams Via Direct Bubble Writing, Claas Willem Visser, Dahlia N. Amato, Jochen Mueller, Jennifer A. Lewis

Student Publications

Polymer foams are cellular solids composed of solid and gas phases, whose mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties are determined by the composition, volume fraction, and connectivity of both phases. A new high-throughput additive manufacturing method, referred to as direct bubble writing, for creating polymer foams with locally programmed bubble size, volume fraction, and connectivity is reported. Direct bubble writing relies on rapid generation and patterning of liquid shell–gas core droplets produced using a core–shell nozzle. The printed polymer foams are able to retain their overall shape, since the outer shell of these bubble droplets consist of a low-viscosity monomer that …

Major Challenges Of Us Goat Producers And Way Forward, Tom Boyer Nov 2019

Major Challenges Of Us Goat Producers And Way Forward, Tom Boyer

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Abstract

Three limiting resources to feed the world in the future are arable land, water, and Ag talent. Obviously, goat production is in this mix, because we need to use appropriate technology to improve goat production. Also, goat production is influenced by imports, markets, and a fragmented industry. Although imports may be good to fill in shortfalls in production, they may harm the industry due to their relatively lower prices compared to domestically produced goat meat. The markets are unstructured and generally lack accurate price discovery, which ultimately, makes pricing difficult. Furthermore, there have been the challenges of a fragmented …

You Keep Using That Meme; I Don’T Think It Means What You Think It Means: Using Memes To Teach Rhetorical Analysis, Kathleen Turner Ledgerwood

Title III Professional Development Reports

Since memes surround us every day and play an increasingly important role in rhetorical strategies used to influence people, this is a great entry point to help students think analytically and critically about the memes that bombard them on social media every day. As a means of entering into visual and verbal analysis, memes can be a really great way to introduce analysis and rhetorical analysis to students. This is a lesson plan to teach rhetorical analysis using the visual and verbal images in memes. The plan also provides extensions and a list of possible resources for use in the …

Attention Restraint, Working Memory Capacity, And Mind Wandering: Do Emotional Valence Or Intentionality Matter?, Alexandra C. Nieto, Matthew S. Welhaf, Anum Mallick, Jonathan B. Banks

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Attention restraint appears to mediate the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and mind wandering (Kane et al., 2016). Prior work has identifed two dimensions of mind wandering—emotional valence and intentionality. However, less is known about how WMC and attention restraint correlate with these dimensions. Te current study examined the relationship between WMC, attention restraint, and mind wandering by emotional valence and intentionality. A confrmatory factor analysis demonstrated that WMC and attention restraint were strongly correlated, but only attention restraint was related to overall mind wandering, consistent with prior fndings. However, when examining the emotional valence of mind wandering, attention …

Quantitative Trait Locus Analysis Of Leaf Morphology Indicates Conserved Shape Loci In Grapevine, Elizabeth M. Demmings, Brigette R. Williams, Cheng Ruei Lee, Paola Barba, Shanshan Yang, Chin-Feng Hwang, Bruce Reisch, Daniel H. Chitwood, Jason P. Londo

College of Agriculture

Leaf shape in plants plays important roles in water use, canopy structure, and physiological tolerances to abiotic stresses; all important traits for the future development and sustainability of grapevine cultivation. Historically, researchers have used ampelography, the study of leaf shape in grapevines, to differentiate Vitis species and cultivars based on finite leaf attributes. However, ampelographic measurements have limitations and new methods for quantifying shape are now available. We paired an analysis of finite trait attributes with a 17-point landmark survey and generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA) to reconstruct grapevine leaves digitally from five interspecific hybrid mapping families. Using the reconstructed leaves, …

U. S. - Moroccan Relations In The Context Of The Anfa Conference, Karim Bejjit Nov 2019

U. S. - Moroccan Relations In The Context Of The Anfa Conference, Karim Bejjit

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This essay seeks to shed new light on the intricate course of U.S.-Moroccan relations following the landing of American troops on the Atlantic coasts of Morocco. The Anfa Conference and Sultan Mohamed V’s dinner meeting with President Roosevelt marked an important stage in the process of Moroccan struggle for independence. Roosevelt’s personal interest in the Moroccan situation may have accentuated the inconsistencies in U.S. foreign policy in the 1940s regarding the French colonial empire and confronted its fundamental idealism with the exigencies of pragmatic politics. The vicissitudes of the war and America’s deep commitment to its French ally as well …

Moroccan Society’S Educational And Cultural Losses During The Years Of Lead (1956-1999), Brahim El Guabli Nov 2019

Moroccan Society’S Educational And Cultural Losses During The Years Of Lead (1956-1999), Brahim El Guabli

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

In this article, I argue that political repression during the Moroccan Years of Lead (1956-1999) engendered myriad losses in the fields of education and culture. However, the scholarly focus on the embodied effects of state violence on former prisoners and forcibly disappeared individuals has overlooked the intangible damages both education and culture sustained during this period. In investigating the imbrication of political conservatism, educational reform and censorship, the article opens a more critical space for the conceptualization of the broader implications of the Years of Lead for education and culture. Drawing on several primary sources in Arabic and French, including …

Moroccan Islamists Debate The Causes Of Violent Extremism, Jack V. Kalpakian

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Using Moroccan sources associated with the Islamist movement, this paper outlines the theological and political challenges facing Morocco in terms of violent extremism, especially those posed by certain Wahhabi and Salafist views that reject mainstream Moroccan Islam. It outlines the state’s response to terrorism and evaluates its causes as offered by several Islamist Moroccan intellectuals.

A Comparative Study Analyzing Undergraduate Internship Participation And The Impact On Retention And Timely Degree Completion At A Four-Year, Private, Midwest Institution, Stefani Schuette

Dissertations

Declining enrollments, rising costs and increasing student debt have caused college administrators, potential students, and outside stakeholders to focus on certain student outcomes, including retention and timely degree completion. Colleges and universities are not only collecting data in these two areas, they are searching for strategies, which might have a positive effect. Research has provided a variety of factors, which contribute to retention and timely degree completion. High-impact practices, such as service learning, student faculty research and internships featured several characteristics that may contribute to retention and timely degree completion. Internships offer several advantages, such as preparation for future careers …

Whole Plastome Sequencing Within Silene Section Psammophilae Reveals Mainland Hybridization And Divergence With The Balearic Island Populations, José Carlos Del Valle, Inés Casimiro-Soriguer, Mᵃ Luisa Buide, Eduardo Narbona, Justen B. Whittall Nov 2019

Whole Plastome Sequencing Within Silene Section Psammophilae Reveals Mainland Hybridization And Divergence With The Balearic Island Populations, José Carlos Del Valle, Inés Casimiro-Soriguer, Mᵃ Luisa Buide, Eduardo Narbona, Justen B. Whittall

Biology

Reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships within Caryophyllaceae tribe Sileneae has been obscured by hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting. Silene is the largest genus in the Caryophyllaceae, and unraveling its evolutionary history has been particularly challenging. In order to infer the phylogenetic relationships among the five species in Silene section Psammophilae, we have performed a genome skimming approach to acquire the complete plastid genome (cpDNA), nuclear ribosomal cistron (nrDNA), and partial mitochondrial genome (mtDNA). We have included 26 populations, representing the range of each species' distribution. This section includes five morphologically similar species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The 18O signature of atmospheric water vapour (δ18OV) is known to be transferred via leaf water to assimilates. It remains, however, unclear how the 18O‐signal transfer differs among plant species and growth forms. We performed a 9‐hr greenhouse fog experiment (relative humidity ≥ 98%) with 18O‐depleted water vapour (−106.7‰) on 140 plant species of eight different growth forms during daytime. We quantified the 18O‐signal transfer by calculating the mean residence time of O in leaf water (MRTLW) and sugars (MRTSugars) and related it to leaf traits and physiological …
