We investigate the nonlinear propagation of intense, two-cycle, carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable laser pulses at 1.7  μm center wavelength in air. We observe CEP-dependent spectral interference in the visible part of the forward-propagating white light generated on propagation. The effect is robust against large fluctuations of the input pulse energy. This robustness is enabled by rigid clamping of both the peak optical field and the phase of the propagating waveform, which has been revealed by numerical simulations. The CEP locking can enhance the yield of the CEP-dependent strong-field processes in gaseous media with long-wavelength drivers, while the observed spectral interference …

We plan to develop an advanced Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) for hadron identification in the TeV momentum range, based on the simultaneous measurement of the energies and of the emission angles of the Transition Radiation (TR) X-rays with respect to the radiating particles. To study the feasibility of this project, we have carried out a beam test campaign at the CERN SPS facility with 20 GeV/c electrons and muons up to 300 GeV/c. To detect the TR X-rays and the radiating particles, we used a 300 μm thick double-sided silicon strip detector, with a strip readout pitch of 50 μm. …

Militant Struggles And Anti-Imperialism In Resil Mojares’S The Freeman Columns During The Early 1970s, Karlo Mikhail Mongaya

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

In the early 1970s, Resil Mojares wrote a newspaper column in the Cebu-based daily The Freeman on what he dubbed the “years of protests.” Through a close reading of surviving copies of Mojares’s columns, thisarticle explores his interest in the militant struggles and anti-imperialist nationalism of the time up until 23 September 1972, when his last column appeared on the very same day he was arrested upon the imposition of martial law. Mojares’s early journalistic writings had nurtured an interest in popular and local histories and cultures and exuded overtly militant articulations, which military rule and postdictatorship developments emasculated.KEYWORDS: RESIL …

Dovie Beams And Philippine Politics: A President’S Scandalous Affair And First Lady Power On The Eve Of Martial Law, Caroline S.; Hau

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle explores the ramifications of American actress Dovie Beams’s exposé of her affair with Ferdinand Marcos in 1970. The ensuing scandal provoked subversive laughter and provided ammunition to various anti-Marcos groups; significantly, some believed it enabled Imelda Marcos to accrue greater political power. The competing accounts of this affair raise questions about the politics of sex scandals and the role of First Ladies, but the turning point of Imelda’s rise to power was the declaration of martial law. Still, the Dovie Beams affair is no mere footnote in history because what is often downgraded intellectually as personal, private, or intimate …

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow Nov 2019

The Value Of Art Therapy: An Intervention To Enhance Emotional Health Of Children With Hearing Loss, Helen Boyle, Peggy Dunn Snow

JADARA

Deafness is the invisible, unseen sensory anomaly that is difficult for hearing individuals to understand. Deaf and hard of hearing children look the same as other children and have the same cognitive abilities as hearing children; they ambulate, laugh, cry, and have the same basic needs. Research data supports the fact that when intelligence instruments are used that do not rely on verbal and language processing abilities the results show that there is no difference in performance between hearing and hearing impaired children (Moores 2001; Vemon 1990). There is the same range of intelligence for both groups. However there is …

Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Video-Mediated Communication With Deaf Individuals: Implications For Telepsychotherapy, Michael John Gournaris, Irene W. Leigh

JADARA

Telecommunications and videoconference systems are increasingly replacing face-to-face communication (F2F). Video-mediated communication (VMC) offers the benefit of virtual F2F communication over long distances. The purpose of this study was to compare communication performance and perceptions for deaf individuals in F2F and VMC situations using a Map Task. Deaf participants were instructed by a deaf instructor using American Sign Language to mark routes. There were no significant differences in the length of sessions, almost all communication breakdown events, map task deviations, and overall outcomes. The results suggest that effective communication can occur in VMC situations. Research is needed to gauge the …

Research On Food Safety Supervision Of Internet Ordering, Xu Hang

Food and Machinery

The particularities of Internet food safety supervision, including platform participation, business concealment, complex distribution, lagging law and backward mode, resulted in the problems of poor integration of resources of supervision departments, reduction of illegal cost of business safety, inadequate supervision of third-party food ordering platform, high cost of safeguarding rights and obtaining evidence. We should actively explore the government, ordering platform, industry associations, news media, consumers as one of the social co-governance mode of Internet ordering food safety supervision, and build a new pattern of Internet ordering food safety supervision.

Research & Publications

As the aging population grows, chronic illness increases, and our healthcare costs sharply increase, patient portals are positioned as a central component of patient engagement through the potential to change the physician-patient relationship and enable chronic disease self-management. A patient’s engagement in their healthcare contributes to improving health outcomes, and information technologies can support health engagement. In this chapter, we extend the existing literature by discovering design gaps for patient portals from a systematic analysis of negative users’ feedback from the actual use of patient portals. Specifically, we adopt a topic modeling approach, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm, to discover …

Virtual Charter Schools And The Democratic Aims Of Education, Dustin Hornbeck, Kathleen Knight Abowitz, Andrew Saultz

Education and Culture

Virtual schooling is expanding as an alternative to traditional public schooling in the early twenty-first century. This paper analyzes virtual schooling with regards to the democratic associational aims of public schooling as conceived by John Dewey. We examine the general landscape of virtual schooling by looking at recent history, governance, and student performance in these schools. Next, we analyze the significant ways in which virtual schools fail to meet associational aims for schooling. We conclude with a normative argument about the nature of new educational trends and innovations, drawing from Dewey’s ideas in The School and Society to articulate the …

Finding Government Resources Online: A Webometric Study Of Selective Federal Depository Library Websites, Charity C. Park

SLIS Connecting

Over eleven hundred libraries across the United States and its territories participate in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) by providing public access to free government resources. In the last decade, there has been a significant shift as many government publications are being published only electronically. At the same time, several older physical collections are being digitized and made available online. This shift has caused many FDLP libraries to weed their older physical government document collections and increase their electronic holdings.

This study examines how Federal depository libraries in the United States provide information about their government document collections and …
