Reaching Zero Waste: Determining The Student Perspective On Campus Food Waste., Cassie Anne Parkins
Reaching Zero Waste: Determining The Student Perspective On Campus Food Waste., Cassie Anne Parkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food waste is an ongoing problem in the complex global food system. College campuses are in a unique position to address food waste through reducing it in their own food systems and by encouraging students to develop behaviors to reduce and divert waste from landfills. In this thesis project I seek to understand how students consider food waste and their attitudes and ideas about reducing it. To this end, I observed student behaviors and waste in University of Louisville’s all-you-care-to-eat dining hall and weighed plate waste there. I conducted informational interviews with University and Aramark employees, along with semi-structured interviews …

Roots And Goals Of The State Of Qatar's Contradictory Foreign Policy: Implications For U.S. National Security Interests, Osarodion Odosamamwen Izevbigie
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Qatar‟s foreign policies and the tools used in achieving them pose various risks and dangers to the interests of the United States, and its allies. These tools involve the use of the media, terrorist organizations, hedging, investments, hyperactive diplomacy, and strategic alliances. Through these tools, Qatar aims to achieve influence and objectives, which are normally beyond the political circumference of small states. For instance, as a tool of influence, Qatar maintains relationships with terrorist organizations, which has serious implications for the U.S. fight against terrorism. However, as an ally, Qatar has advantages for the U.S. through its purchase of U.S. …
Investigating Dicamba Tolerance In Grapevine Cultivars Through Drift Simulation Assays, Bryce David Bentley
Investigating Dicamba Tolerance In Grapevine Cultivars Through Drift Simulation Assays, Bryce David Bentley
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Dicamba is a synthetic auxin herbicide which acts systematically and selectively controls broadleaf plants and has become increasingly popular in the past several years for weed control in commercial agriculture following widespread adoption of dicamba-resistant, transgenic soybean and cotton. Dicamba may be better acknowledged by growers of specialty crops, like grapes, for its capacity to drift miles away from the site of application and deposit on fields, remaining potent enough to cause crop damage and yield loss to vulnerable plants. Grapes are among the most susceptible agronomic crops to dicamba drift, showing visible injury at rates less than 1% of …

40 Years On: Reflections On The Iranian Revolution, Sevgi Adak, Touraj Atabaki, Kamran Matin, Valentine M. Moghadam
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
The three articles compiled here are based on a panel discussion held at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) on 23 May 2019.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution, its aim was to revisit the debate on the causes and impact of the revolution for Iran and beyond.
Three questions in particular guided the interdisciplinary dialogue and political reflections on this world historical event: How should we analyse the conditions underpinning the revolutionary dynamics in Iran in the global context of the 1970s? How should the Iranian Revolution be analysed in an …
Evidence-Based Foot Care For Persons With Type 2 Diabetes, Nicole Gutierrez
Evidence-Based Foot Care For Persons With Type 2 Diabetes, Nicole Gutierrez
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Unmanaged Type 2 diabetes leads to macrovascular changes that affect the lower extremities, thereby damaging the sensory nerve fibers and leading to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. These patients may not be able to feel pain, heat, or cold in their lower extremities and often describe feelings of numbness and tingling. This sensory deficit may lead to the development of diabetic foot ulcers which often result in amputation. These preventable foot complications may be identified promptly with adequate diabetic foot exams. Comprehensive diabetic foot examinations reduce the occurrences of foot complications associated with uncontrolled glucose management and improves health outcomes for patients …

Educational Gerrymandering: Money, Motives, And Constitutional Rights, Derek Black
Educational Gerrymandering: Money, Motives, And Constitutional Rights, Derek Black
Faculty Publications
Public school funding plummeted following the Great Recession and failed to recover over the next decade, prompting strikes and protests across the nation. Courts did almost nothing to stop the decline. While a majority of state supreme courts recognize a constitutional right to an adequate or equal education, they increasingly struggle to enforce the right. That right could be approaching a tipping point. Either it evolves, or risks becoming irrelevant.
In the past, courts have focused almost exclusively on the adequacy and equity of funding for at-risk students, demanding that states provide more resources. Courts have failed to ask the …

Feel-Sad Tv: Sadness Pornography In Contemporary Serials, Blake K. Beaver
Feel-Sad Tv: Sadness Pornography In Contemporary Serials, Blake K. Beaver
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
This article develops a theory of sadness pornographies in contemporary feel-sad television. Under the sad porn category, the essay explores a key sub-genre in contemporary serial dramas: trauma porn. The article is anchored in an affective analysis of two contemporary serials: Amazon's Transparent and NBC's This Is Us, both of which center multigenerational, familial trauma. Through a combined Berlantian and Spinozist optic, the essay attends to various episodes from the two serials to illuminate the phenomenon of trauma porn in current feel-sad media. In this reading, the essay considers how Spinoza's understandings of the temporality of affect relate to the …
Affect And Manhattan’S West Side Piers, Ricardo J. Millhouse
Affect And Manhattan’S West Side Piers, Ricardo J. Millhouse
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
Derek P. McCormack (2010) argues, "Affect, is like an atmosphere: it might not be visible, but at any given point it might be sensed ... Emotion, in turn, can be understood as the sociocultural expression of this felt intensity" (643). This paper puts McCormack (2010) and Ben Anderson (2009) into conversation to think through the ways in which atmosphere in relation to affective and emotive life has been conceptualized. I center the affective atmospheres that happen with queer bodies that make New York's west side piers queerly affective. I use "queer bodies" to signal the dis-identification with heteronormativity or binaristic …
Weatherlessness: Affect, Mood, Temperament, The Death Of The Will, And Politics, John J. Stuhr
Weatherlessness: Affect, Mood, Temperament, The Death Of The Will, And Politics, John J. Stuhr
disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
First, I develop an account of the nature of moods and the relation of mood to emotion and temperament. This account stresses that social and individual moods are marked by four features: They are transactional - neither wholly subjective nor objective; in experience they shade into and blur back and forth with feeling and temperament; they are ambient and atmospheric, a habit of living ·in the world more expansive than a habit of mind; and, whether conscious or not, moods have causes that, if known, may be manipulated to advance both personal and political ends. Second, I focus …

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
The 2018-19 Editorial Collective is pleased to present the 28th volume of disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory. Our inspiration for this odd bundle of pages is rooted in the aesthetic of the self-printed zine. While we regret that we couldn't sneak into Miller Hall in the middle of the night to guerrilla-copy the entire issue on a late-80s black-and-white Xerox, we are proud to say that each page of this volume was assembled entirely by hand. Every page is bordered or backgrounded by collages: these are pages that peel and flake, assembled from bits and pieces cut up …
The Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Minority Students’ Participation In An International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, Elizabeth Scott-Janda
The Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Minority Students’ Participation In An International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, Elizabeth Scott-Janda
Dissertations
Although concern about mathematical achievement inequities has become widespread, even in well-funded, high-performing high schools, unequal outcomes for minority and disadvantaged students can seem persistent and difficult to change despite strong efforts. This project reports on an ethnographic study that examined how social environments within schools can affect students’ choices of whether or not to attempt advanced coursework in mathematics, especially among marginalized groups like Hispanic minorities, low socio-economic status (SES) and rural populations. It considered how social and peer environments affect students’ approaches to schooling, and decisions they make that will have long-term implications for their futures. In particular, …

Effects Of A Chronic 0.1 Μm Arsenic Exposure On P19 Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation And Pluripotency, Benjamin Mcmichael
All Theses
Globally, at least 140 million people are exposed to levels of arsenic greater than the World Health Organization recommended standard of 10 ug/L (10 ppb) through their drinking water and food. Epidemiological studies have correlated arsenic exposure during embryonic and fetal development with reduced birth weight, as well as muscular and neurodevelopmental deficits. The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanisms by which a chronic, low-level arsenic exposure impairs cellular development and differentiation. This was achieved by exposing P19 mouse embryonic stem cells (mESC’s) to 0.1 μM arsenic (7.5 ppb), a concentration lower than the current drinking …
Multimodal Mobile Sensing Systems For Physiological And Psychological Assessment, Nguyen Phan Sinh Huynh
Multimodal Mobile Sensing Systems For Physiological And Psychological Assessment, Nguyen Phan Sinh Huynh
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Sensing systems for monitoring physiological and psychological states have been studied extensively in both academic and industry research for different applications across various domains. However, most of the studies have been done in the lab environment with controlled and complicated sensor setup, which is only suitable for serious healthcare applications in which the obtrusiveness and immobility can be compromised in a trade-off for accurate clinical screening or diagnosing. The recent substantial development of mobile devices with embedded miniaturized sensors are now allowing new opportunities to adapt and develop such sensing systems in the mobile context. The ability to sense physiological …
The International Religious Freedom Act: Non-State Actors And Freedom From Sovereign Government Control, Robert C. Blitt
The International Religious Freedom Act: Non-State Actors And Freedom From Sovereign Government Control, Robert C. Blitt
Marquette Law Review
The International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) recently underwent its most significant amendment process since being introduced in 1997. Among the major changes, sponsors of the Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act (Wolf Act) proposed adding a new framework to IRFA intended to address the phenomenon of non-state actors (NSAs) violating the right to freedom of religion or belief. The impetus for this new mandate, according to the bill’s sponsors, flowed from the realization that NSAs such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS or ISIL) were wielding religious intolerance to commit “some of the most egregious religious …

"Leave Me My Name!": Why Competitive Keyword Advertising Is An Ethical Landmine For Attorneys, Skylar R. Croy
Marquette Law Review
Search engine providers, like Google and Yahoo!, make money by allowing advertisers to bid on keywords. When a user enters the keyword, the advertisement is prominently displayed, typically toward the top of the results.
States are divided on whether to allow attorneys to bid on the names of other attorneys—a practice known as competitive keyword advertising. On one hand, just this summer, a New Jersey ethics panel took the position that competitive keyword advertising does not, generally, violate of the rules of professional conduct. However, the advertisement may not include text with the searched-for attorney’s name that is hyperlinked to …
Reconceptualizing Access To Justice, Katherine S. Wallat
Reconceptualizing Access To Justice, Katherine S. Wallat
Marquette Law Review
This Article argues that the assumptions that underlie how we currently conceptualize equal access to justice ensure that we will never achieve it. Much scholarly attention has been paid to the problem of access to justice for lowincome people, which is typically defined as unmet legal need. Most of this attention focuses on the crisis in civil courts of unrepresented parties. These scholars suggest court-focused solutions centered on providing more lawyers and legal advice to help deal with this pro se crisis. But the vast majority of justiciable civil problems are resolved (or not) without any contact with the legal …
Promoting Youth Competence Through Balanced And Restorative Justice: A Community-Based Pyd Approach, Rebecca Dillard, Tarkington Newman, Melissa Kim
Promoting Youth Competence Through Balanced And Restorative Justice: A Community-Based Pyd Approach, Rebecca Dillard, Tarkington Newman, Melissa Kim
Journal of Youth Development
As responses to first-time, nonviolent juvenile offenders move towards community-based restorative justice, approaches such as the Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) Model are prominent. The BARJ Model engages the youth offender, offense victim(s), and community in which the offense occurred with three associated goals: accountability, community safety, and competency development. However, while the goals of accountability and community safety are often prioritized, many community-based restorative justice programs neglect the goal of competency development, which is ultimately a disservice not only to the youth offender, but to the community. To interrupt the cyclical nature of juvenile offending and support the long-term …

Civic Engagement Among Youth Exposed To Community Violence: Directions For Research And Practice, Sonia Jain, Alison Cohen, Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Catherine Duarte
Civic Engagement Among Youth Exposed To Community Violence: Directions For Research And Practice, Sonia Jain, Alison Cohen, Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Catherine Duarte
Journal of Youth Development
Historically and contemporarily marginalized youth who are disproportionately exposed to community violence are often the same youth who are less likely to be civically engaged. However, the community violence and civic engagement literatures have not yet fully explored how these experiences may be linked in young people’s lives and in relation to what other forces. Using developmental assets and ecological-transactional frameworks, we review the emerging literature on civic engagement among youth exposed to community violence and how external developmental assets and neighborhood collective efficacy may create opportunity for their increased civic engagement. We present numerous conceptually- and empirically-based hypotheses to …

The Landscape Of R Packages For Automated Exploratory Data Analysis, Mateusz Staniak, Przemysław Biecek
The Landscape Of R Packages For Automated Exploratory Data Analysis, Mateusz Staniak, Przemysław Biecek
The R Journal
The increasing availability of large but noisy data sets with a large number of heterogeneous variables leads to the increasing interest in the automation of common tasks for data analysis. The most time-consuming part of this process is the Exploratory Data Analysis, crucial for better domain understanding, data cleaning, data validation, and feature engineering
There is a growing number of libraries that attempt to automate some of the typical Exploratory Data Analysis tasks to make the search for new insights easier and faster. In this paper, we present a systematic review of existing tools for Automated Exploratory Data Analysis (autoEDA). …
