Origins, Zoey M. Perse Dec 2019

Origins, Zoey M. Perse

Theses

Origins are beginnings. Everyone has an origin, a point from which their path brought them to the person that they are today. Some origins are from birth and lead in winding lines to a person’s present. Some origins come after birth and may take the form of an event, person or place that touched a life and drastically affected their path, pushing or pulling them to become an entirely different person than would have otherwise come about.

My own origin was the moment I was given into the arms of my adoptive parents. I was wrapped in layers of clothes, …

A Review Of Ball Lightning Models, Hasitha Mahabaduge Dec 2019

A Review Of Ball Lightning Models, Hasitha Mahabaduge

Georgia Journal of Science

Ball lightning is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere. However due to its brevity and rarity, its occurrence is not well understood. Three models based on electromagnetic properties are discussed in this paper to explain the rare phenomenon of ball lightning. The first model incorporates the idea of electron bunching, electrons moving with different velocities. This creates a plasma bubble by recombining electrons with ionized gas to form plasma that is stabilized by a standing microwave. The second model explains the idea of streamers being tangled and linked in a magnetic field while stabilized by the conservation of …

Ignite: More Experience, Less Expense: Meaningful And Budget-Friendly Rewards (Group 1), Amy D. Orr, Bethany Carter, James Dusty Sidwell, Stacy Manger

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

For a PBIS acknowledgement system to work effectively, there must be student buy-in, which involves getting student input and implementing incentives that are meaningful and enticing to them. However, this isn’t always easy to do without breaking the bank or losing valuable instructional time! At our elementary school, we decided to focus on monthly incentives that were cost-effective and more of an experience rather than tangible (and often costly) rewards. We made sure to consider multiple factors, including (1) how to implement incentives while still maximizing instructional time for all content areas, (2) making sure all students had opportunities to …

Creative Escapism And The Camino De Santiago, Berenika Seryczyńska Dec 2019

Creative Escapism And The Camino De Santiago, Berenika Seryczyńska

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The phenomenon of escapism, extensively analyed in the key mechanism of escape into the world of illusion and imagination in numerous sociological and psychological studies, has not yet been researched from a theological perspective or described in the context of pilgrimage. Nevertheless, the existing studies encourage this type of reflection, indicating that escapism seems to be one of the ways to solve social problems by turning towards religiousness. This is the case for pilgrims on their journey to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela. The studies of pilgrims reveal the escapist motivations behind the decision …

Pilgrims’ Play On The Santiago Way, Daniel Moulin-Stożek Dec 2019

Pilgrims’ Play On The Santiago Way, Daniel Moulin-Stożek

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The popularity of the walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela across Northern Spain is often understood as a new kind of spiritual tourism rather than a revival of religious practice. In order to examine this claim, I explore common symbolic and ritual practices on the trail such as rock placing, message making, role playing, and partaking in communal play activities. I elaborate the concept of play to explain these behaviors and consider how they relate to transcendental and sacred meanings. This analysis has important implications for explaining the current popularity of the Camino. In particular, it helps explain how the …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This article analyses the process leading to the restoring, revitalisation and consolidation of the Way of Saint James in Spain in recent decades, and its conversion from a merely private and residual pilgrimage route of just several hundred individuals, into an important cultural and spiritual reality having a worldwide impact. The region of Navarra is used to highlight typical places of interest located on the Way of Saint James, and as an example of an experience that can be extrapolated and exported, of the activities, projects, events, decisions and actions undertaken in a huge collaborative effort that has given rise …

Islamic State E-Caliphate On Twitter: An Observational Study, Sultan Al-Masaeed

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) media strategy is a successful one. It has enabled a small group of social media users to amplify impressions of the organization far beyond its actual effect, capturing global attention. This terrorist group has proven quite effective in using Twitter to spread their evil ideas, recruit followers and post obscene videos depicting the most egregious cruelty imaginable. In this exploratory research, an observational research was undertaken to explore the strategies and tactics deployed by the group in their use of Twitter. The results show that ISIS has successfully utilized this social media …

Increasing The Reinforcing Value Of Exercise In Overweight Adults, Kyle D. Flack, Kelsey Elise Ufholz, Luann Johnson, James N. Roemmich

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Objectives: This study determined whether a moderate- or high-dose exercise program increases exercise reinforcement. Increasing the relative reinforcing value of exercise (RRVexercise; i.e., incentive sensitization of exercise) may increase the usual physical activity (PA) participation. Preference and/or tolerance for the intensity of exercise was also assessed.

Design: Sedentary men and women (body mass index, BMI: 25–35 kg/m2) were randomized into parallel exercise training groups expending either 300 (n = 18) or 600 (n = 18) kcal/exercise session, five sessions/week, for 12 weeks.

Methods: The RRVexercise was determined by how much …

Microhemodynamic Parameters Of Cortical Substance Of Kidneys At Experimental Hydronephrosis, Bakhtiyar U. Iriskulov, Rano B. Tadjibayeva

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

Research objective. Under conditions of unilateral ureter occlusion, development of microhemodynamic disorders of cortical substance in kidneys was studied both on the damage side and on contralateral (opposite) side. Materials and methods. Under the conditions of the experiment, we studied the state of microhemodynamics of the cortical region of both kidneys during the development of unilateral hydronephrosis. The experiments were conducted on 90 (48 experimental, 36 false-operated, 6 intact) outbred adult males. Results. It has been established that disorders on the side of occlusion depend on duration of obstruction in lumen of ureter, which determines the development of tissue hypoxia …
