Scheduling Optimization Of Parallel Linear Algebra Algorithms Using Supervised Learning, Gabriel Laberge, Shahrzad Shirzad, Patrick Diehl, Hartmut Kaiser, Serge Prudhomme, Adrian S. Lemoine Nov 2019

Scheduling Optimization Of Parallel Linear Algebra Algorithms Using Supervised Learning, Gabriel Laberge, Shahrzad Shirzad, Patrick Diehl, Hartmut Kaiser, Serge Prudhomme, Adrian S. Lemoine

Faculty Publications

Linear algebra algorithms are used widely in a variety of domains, e.g machine learning, numerical physics and video games graphics. For all these applications, loop-level parallelism is required to achieve high performance. However, finding the optimal way to schedule the workload between threads is a non-trivial problem because it depends on the structure of the algorithm being parallelized and the hardware the executable is run on. In the realm of Asynchronous Many Task runtime systems, a key aspect of the scheduling problem is predicting the proper chunk-size, where the chunk-size is defined as the number of iterations of a for-loop …

Electrocardiographic Findings During Standard Hands Only Cpr And Hands Only Cpr Plus Pedal Cpr In Senior Rescuers, Laura Melany Yassa

Master's Theses

The standard first aid for a heart attack resulting in cardiopulmonary arrest is effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Chest compressions are most commonly performed on a flat surface with the rescuer kneeling next to the victim with one hand on top of the other on the sternum and elbows straight. This technique of being on the ground may be challenging for those without the mobility and strength to get up and down from the ground. In 2005, the American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines listed “pedal”, or heel, compression as an acceptable alternative to standard chest compressions (Trenkamp & Perez, 2015). That …

Another Look At Success Probability Of Linear Cryptanalysis, Subhabrata Samajder, Palash Sarkar

Journal Articles

This work studies the success probability of key recovery attacks based on using a single linear approximation. Previous works had analysed success probability under different hypotheses on the distributions of correlations for the right and wrong key choices. This work puts forward a unifying framework of general key randomisation hypotheses. All previously used key randomisation hypotheses as also zero correlation attacks can be seen as special cases of the general framework. Derivations of expressions for the success probability are carried out under both the settings of the plaintexts being sampled with and without replacements. Compared to previous analysis, we uncover …

Distinguisher And Non-Randomness Of Grainv1 For 112, 114 And 116 Initialisation Rounds With Multiple-Bit Difference In Ivs, Deepak Kumar Dalai, Subhamoy Maitra, Santu Pal, Dibyendu Roy Nov 2019

Distinguisher And Non-Randomness Of Grainv1 For 112, 114 And 116 Initialisation Rounds With Multiple-Bit Difference In Ivs, Deepak Kumar Dalai, Subhamoy Maitra, Santu Pal, Dibyendu Roy

Journal Articles

In this study, the authors construct two different distinguishers on Grain-v1 with 112 and 114 initialisation rounds. Their first distinguisher can distinguish Grain-v1 with 112 initialisation rounds from a uniform random source for 99% of the randomly chosen keys from full key space. The second one can distinguish Grain-v1 from a random source for 73% of the randomly chosen keys for one-fourth of the total key space (278 keys out of 280 keys). Our results improve upon the earlier distinguishers. The technique used for the distinguishers is conditional differential cryptanalysis. The existing works in this direction considered only one bit …

Conceptual Models For Integer Addition And Subtraction, Nicole M. Wessman-Enzinger, Edward S. Mooney

Faculty Publications - College of Education

In this article, we report the findings of a study conducted with 6 Grade 8 students in the United States. The students posed stories for open number sentences involving addition and subtraction of integers. We analysed the stories posed by the students to build models that describe the conceptual structures behind these posed stories – the conceptual models for integer addition and subtraction. These four conceptual models for thinking about and using integer addition and subtraction include Bookkeeping, Counterbalance, Relativity, and Translation, and are generated from the students’ posed stories. We also provide profiles of conceptual model use for two …

Of Dangers, Conditions, Children, And Maturity: A Plea For A Comprehensible Standard In Long-Standing Rules, Maureen Straub Kordesh Nov 2019

Of Dangers, Conditions, Children, And Maturity: A Plea For A Comprehensible Standard In Long-Standing Rules, Maureen Straub Kordesh

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This Article explores the common law doctrine of attractive nuisance in Illinois and proposes a more detailed explication of the rule. The doctrine lies in the junction between tort and contract, which might account for the incompleteness of its presentation. It argues that because law students are a significant audience for case law, the language of such rules should be as detailed and clear as possible.

A Deep Learning Approach For Tweet Classification And Rescue Scheduling For Effective Disaster Management, Md. Yasin Kabir, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Every activity in disaster management demands accurate and up-todate information to allow a quick, easy, and cost-efective response to reduce the possible loss of lives and properties. It is a challenging and complex task to acquire information from diferent regions of a disaster-afected area in a timely fashion. The extensive spread and reach of social media and networks such as Twitter allow people to share information in real-time. However, gathering of valuable information requires a series of operations such as (1) processing each tweet for the text classiication, (2) possible location determination of people needing help based on tweets, and …

Use Cases Of Lossy Compression For Floating-Point Data In Scientific Data Sets, Franck Cappello, Sheng Di, Sihuan Li, Xin Liang, Ali Murat Gok, Dingwen Tao, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Architectural and technological trends of systems used for scientific computing call for a significant reduction of scientific data sets that are composed mainly of floating-point data. This article surveys and presents experimental results of currently identified use cases of generic lossy compression to address the different limitations of scientific computing systems. The article shows from a collection of experiments run on parallel systems of a leadership facility that lossy data compression not only can reduce the footprint of scientific data sets on storage but also can reduce I/O and checkpoint/restart times, accelerate computation, and even allow significantly larger problems to …

Blended Root Finding Algorithm Outperforms Bisection And Regula Falsi Algorithms, Chaman Sabharwal Nov 2019

Blended Root Finding Algorithm Outperforms Bisection And Regula Falsi Algorithms, Chaman Sabharwal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finding the roots of an equation is a fundamental problem in various fields, including numerical computing, social and physical sciences. Numerical techniques are used when an analytic solution is not available. There is not a single algorithm that works best for every function. We designed and implemented a new algorithm that is a dynamic blend of the bisection and regula falsi algorithms. The implementation results validate that the new algorithm outperforms both bisection and regula falsi algorithms. It is also observed that the new algorithm outperforms the secant algorithm and the Newton-Raphson algorithm because the new algorithm requires fewer computational …

Ridesourcing Systems: A Framework And Review, Hai Wang, Hai Yang Nov 2019

Ridesourcing Systems: A Framework And Review, Hai Wang, Hai Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development and popularization of mobile and wireless communication technologies, ridesourcing companies have been able to leverage internet-based platforms to operate e-hailing services in many cities around the world. These companies connect passengers and drivers in real time and are disruptively changing the transportation indus- try. As pioneers in a general sharing economy context, ridesourcing shared transportation platforms consist of a typical two-sided market. On the demand side, passengers are sensi- tive to the price and quality of the service. On the supply side, drivers, as freelancers, make working decisions flexibly based on their income from the platform …

Rethinking Education Choices: The Effect Of Surveys, Luca Facchinello, Juanna Schroter Joensen, Gregory Francisco Veramindi Nov 2019

Rethinking Education Choices: The Effect Of Surveys, Luca Facchinello, Juanna Schroter Joensen, Gregory Francisco Veramindi

Research Collection School of Economics

Can surveys affect human capital investments? This paper examines whether individual education choices and outcomes are affected by a survey posing questions related to expectations and forward-looking behavior. We have administrative data for the whole Swedish population to which an extensive education survey was administered to randomly drawn samples of 3rd graders. This constitutes a randomized social experiment for testing whether responding to survey questions alters behavior. We observe complete educational and labor market histories until the individuals are 31-41 years old. We have exogenous variation in the timing of first surveys and when an additional survey was administered to …

Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello Nov 2019

Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello

Research Collection School of Economics

Recent literature explains the puzzling finding of zero or negative peer effects in aca- demic achievement assuming that better peers negatively affect beliefs about ability (self-concept), motivation or peer interactions. This paper provides new evidence on such negative mechanisms, and on their impact on educational choices and attainment for students randomly assigned in compulsory school to classes with different cognitive ability. Using detailed longitudinal data on a nationally representative sample of Swedish compulsory school students, I find that students exposed to higher ability peers systematically underestimate their ability and are less likely to choose advanced subjects throughout compulsory school. While …

Performing Michael Haydn's Requiem In C Minor, Mh155, Michael E. Ruhling Nov 2019

Performing Michael Haydn's Requiem In C Minor, Mh155, Michael E. Ruhling

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Sigismund Graf Schrattenbach, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, died 16 December 1771, at the age of 73. Johann Michael Haydn received the charge to write a Requiem Mass for the Prince-Archbishop’s funeral service scheduled for January 2, while the composer was still grieving the death of his only child, Aloysia Antonia, who died just a few months earlier before reaching her first birthday. Likely inspired by the grief he felt from the loss of both his daughter and his beloved patron, Haydn completed the Requiem in C minor (Missa pro defuncto Archiepiscopo Sigismundo), MH155, in just two weeks—the autograph score is …

Investigating The Impact Of Video Gaming On Children’S Magical Thinking In Early Childhood, Rafi Antar Nov 2019

Investigating The Impact Of Video Gaming On Children’S Magical Thinking In Early Childhood, Rafi Antar

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

In our present time, young children are exposed to various forms of electronic media, in particular video games. Several studies have discussed the impact of video games on children’s behavior, and brain development; however, almost none have framed this impact in the context of magical thinking. By using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach and a grounded theory approach, this dissertation aimed at discussing the meaning three children (ages 4 and 5) made after playing a video game called Super Mario bros. This study answered two questions: (1) how is children’s thought processes related to the notion of reality (i.e., understanding …

A Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Model For Targeting Calcitriol-Conjugated Quantum Dots To Inflammatory Breast Cancer Cells., James Forder, Mallory Smith, Margot Wagner, Rachel J. Schaefer, Jonathan Gorky, Kenneth L. Van Golen, Anja Nohe, Prasad Dhurjati Nov 2019

A Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Model For Targeting Calcitriol-Conjugated Quantum Dots To Inflammatory Breast Cancer Cells., James Forder, Mallory Smith, Margot Wagner, Rachel J. Schaefer, Jonathan Gorky, Kenneth L. Van Golen, Anja Nohe, Prasad Dhurjati

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Quantum dots (QDs) conjugated with 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) and Mucin-1 (MUC-1) antibodies (SM3) have been found to target inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) tumors and reduce proliferation, migration, and differentiation of these tumors in mice. A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model has been constructed and optimized to match experimental data for multiple QDs: control QDs, QDs conjugated with calcitriol, and QDs conjugated with both calcitriol and SM3 MUC1 antibodies. The model predicts continuous QD concentration for key tissues in mice distinguished by IBC stage (healthy, early-stage, and late-stage). Experimental and clinical efforts in QD treatment of IBC can be augmented by in …

Fractional Random Weighted Bootstrapping For Classification On Imbalanced Data With Ensemble Decision Tree Methods, Sean Charles Carter Nov 2019

Fractional Random Weighted Bootstrapping For Classification On Imbalanced Data With Ensemble Decision Tree Methods, Sean Charles Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ensemble methods are commonly used for building predictive models for classification. Models that are unstable to perturbations in the training set, such as the decision tree, often see considerable reductions in error when grouped, using bootstrapped resamples of the training data to train many models. The non-parametric bootstrap, however, has limited efficacy when used on severely imbalanced data, especially when the number of observations of one or more classes is exceptionally small. We explore the fractional random weighted bootstrap, which randomly assigns fractional weights to observations, as an alternative resampling pro cedure in training machine learning ensembles, particularly decision tree …

Can Florida's Springs Coast Provide A Potential Refuge For Calcifying Organisms? Evidence From Benthic Foraminifera, Kyle E. Amergian Nov 2019

Can Florida's Springs Coast Provide A Potential Refuge For Calcifying Organisms? Evidence From Benthic Foraminifera, Kyle E. Amergian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida’s Springs Coast, located in the northeast Gulf of Mexico, includes an extensive system of salt marshes that discharge millions of liters of fresh water into coastal waters daily. The chemical properties of the spring waters include high alkalinity and high calcium concentrations due to the Paleogene limestone lithology of this region of Florida. Benthic foraminifers, which are recognized as ecologically important bioindicators, occur abundantly on the shallow shelf off the Springs Coast. Based on the prevalence of the benthic foraminifer Archaias angulatus in the seagrass beds along this shallow shelf, a previous study proposed that the Springs Coast provides …

Understanding The Influence Of The Cancer Microenvironment On Metabolism And Metastasis, Shonagh Russell Nov 2019

Understanding The Influence Of The Cancer Microenvironment On Metabolism And Metastasis, Shonagh Russell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease. Not only is there considerable variability between different cancer types, but there is enormous variability between and within patients who have the same type of cancer. Within tumors, there are multiple cell types, including cancer cells, stromal cells, and immune cells. The tumor microenvironment often induces the healthy cells to become pro-tumorigenic. Cell metabolism is exquisitely sensitive to changes in the tumor microenvironment and can be measured to infer the aggressiveness of cancer and predict response to therapy. In this dissertation, we aim to understand how the microenvironment, specifically low pH, affects the …

Microplastic Occurrence And Effects In Commercially Harvested North American Finfish And Shellfish: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Britta Baechler, Cheyenne Stienbarger, Dorothy Horn, Jincy Joseph, Allison Taylor, Elise F. Granek, Susanne Brander Nov 2019

Microplastic Occurrence And Effects In Commercially Harvested North American Finfish And Shellfish: Current Knowledge And Future Directions, Britta Baechler, Cheyenne Stienbarger, Dorothy Horn, Jincy Joseph, Allison Taylor, Elise F. Granek, Susanne Brander

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Commercial fisheries yield essential foods, sustain cultural practices, and provide widespread employment around the globe. Commercially harvested species face a myriad of anthropogenic threats including degraded habitats, changing climate, overharvest, and pollution. Microplastics are pollutants of increasing concern, which are pervasive in the environment and can harbor or adsorb pollutants from surrounding waters. Aquatic organisms, including commercial species, encounter and ingest microplastics, but there is a paucity of data about those caught and cultured in North America. Additional research is needed to determine prevalence, physiological effects, and population-level implications of microplastics in commercial species from Canada, the United States, and …

Widespread Severe Wildfires Under Climate Change Lead To Increased Forest Homogeneity In Dry Mixed-Conifer Forests, Brooke Alyce Cassell, Robert M. Scheller, Melissa S. Lucash, Matthew Hurteau, E. Louise Loudermilk Nov 2019

Widespread Severe Wildfires Under Climate Change Lead To Increased Forest Homogeneity In Dry Mixed-Conifer Forests, Brooke Alyce Cassell, Robert M. Scheller, Melissa S. Lucash, Matthew Hurteau, E. Louise Loudermilk

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Climate warming in the western United States is causing changes to the wildfire regime in mixed-conifer forests. Rising temperatures, longer fire seasons, increased drought, as well as fire suppression and changes in land use, have led to greater and more severe wildfire activity, all contributing to altered forest composition over the past century. To understand future interactions among climate, wildfire, and vegetation in a fire-prone landscape in the southern Blue Mountains of central Oregon, we used a spatially explicit forest landscape model, LANDIS-II, to simulate forest and fire dynamics under current management practices and two projected climate scenarios. The results …

Urban-Rural Surface Temperature Deviation And Intra-Urban Variations Contained By An Urban Growth Boundary, Kevan B. Moffett, Yasuyo Makido, Vivek Shandas

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The urban heat island (UHI) concept describes heat trapping that elevates urban temperatures relative to rural temperatures, at least in temperate/humid regions. In drylands, urban irrigation can instead produce an urban cool island (UCI) effect. However, the UHI/UCI characterization suffers from uncertainty in choosing representative urban/rural endmembers, an artificial dichotomy between UHIs and UCIs, and lack of consistent terminology for other patterns of thermal variation at nested scales. We use the case of a historically well-enforced urban growth boundary (UGB) around Portland (Oregon, USA): to explore the representativeness of the surface temperature UHI (SUHI) as derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging …
